ABSTRACT

The membrane fouling derived from the accumulated dust pollutants and highly viscous oily particles causes irreversible damage to the filtration performance of air filters and results in a significant reduction in their service life. However, it is still challenging to construct high-efficiency and antifouling air filtration membranes with recyclable regeneration. Herein, the fluorine-free amphiphobic micro/nanofiber composite membrane was controllably constructed by integrating click chemistry reaction and electrospinning technique. Low-surface-energy fibers were constructed by a thiol-ene click chemical reaction between mercaptosilane and vinyl groups of polystyrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS), combined with hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) during the electrospinning process. The functional air filter is then prepared by the two-layer composite strategy. Because of the advantages of liquid-like fibrous surface and micro/nanofibrous porous structure, SBS/PAN composite membrane simultaneously shows superior antifouling performances of pollutants and filtration efficiency of over 97% PM0.3 removal. More importantly, the antifouling fibrous membrane still presents a stable and efficient filtration efficiency after multiple washes. Its service life in dust filtration environments is approximately 1.7 times longer than that of the substrate membrane. This work may provide a significant reference for the design of antifouling fiber membranes and high-efficiency air filters with long life spans and reusability.

ABSTRACT

Metal-doping is a common strategy for establishing active sites on photocatalyst, but appropriately exposing them for maximized atomic utilization remains a great challenge in photocatalytic research. Herein, we propose a metal organic framework (MOF)-assisted approach to synthesis copper-modified titania (Cu-TiO2/Cu) photocatalyst with homogenously distributed and highly accessible active sites in its matrix. Significantly, an MOF precursor, namely NH2-MIL-125, with co-chelation of titania (Ti) and copper (Cu) was subjected to mild calcination, subsequently results in Cu-modified TiO2 with highly accessible channels to its inner surface. These channels provide not only a large reactive surface (>400 m2 g-1); they also enable facile modifying route for the pre-deposited Cu in prior to photoreaction. Specifically, NH3 treatment was applied to partially reduce deposited Cu ions (Cu+ and Cu2+) into Cu nanoparticles, where their interplays realize improved optical properties and charge separation during photoreactions. Furthermore, the NH3-induced Cu nanoparticles could also serve as the adsorptive site for H+, thereby enabling 5629 µmol h-1 g-1 H2 generation over the optimum photocatalyst of Cu20/TiO2/Cu500. Such performance is associated to 35.44 and 1.71-fold improvements compared to pure TiO2 (Cu0/TiO2) and untreated Cu-ion modified TiO2 (Cu20/TiO2), respectively. This work offers a new synthetic strategy for obtaining photocatalyst with evenly distributed and highly accessible active sites, thus improving the commensurability of photocatalytic H2 generation from the industrial perspective.

ABSTRACT

Highly permeable particulate matter (PM) can carry various bacteria, viruses and toxics and pose a serious threat to public health. Nevertheless, current respirators typically sacrifice their thickness and base weight for high-performance filtration, which inevitably causes wearing discomfort and significant consumption of raw materials. Here, we show a facile yet massive splitting eletrospinning strategy to prepare an ultrathin, ultralight and radiative cooling dual-scale fiber membrane with about 80% infrared transmittance for high-protective, comfortable and sustainable air filter. By tailoring antibacterial surfactant-triggered splitting of charged jets, the dual-scale fibrous filter consisting of continuous nanofibers (44 ± 12 nm) and submicron-fibers (159 ± 32 nm) is formed. It presents ultralow thickness (1.49 µm) and base weight (0.57 g m-2) but superior protective performances (about 99.95% PM0.3 removal, durable antibacterial ability) and wearing comfort of low air resistance, high heat dissipation and moisture permeability. Moreover, the ultralight filter can save over 97% polymers than commercial N95 respirator, enabling itself to be sustainable and economical. This work paves the way for designing advanced and sustainable protective materials.

ABSTRACT

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has been broadly exploited to meet the challenge of water shortage. Despite the significant achievements of AWH, the leakage of hydroscopic salt during the AWH process hinders its practical applications. Herein, inspired by the unique selective permeability of the phospholipid bilayer, a sandwich structural (hydrophobic-hydrophilic-hydrophobic) polyacrylonitrile nanofibrous membrane (San-PAN) was fabricated for AWH. The hydrophilic inner layer loaded with LiCl could capture water from the air. The hydrophobic microchannels in the outer layer could selectively allow the free transmission of gaseous water molecules but confine the hydroscopic salt solution in the hydrophilic layer, achieving continuous and recyclable water sorption/desorption. As demonstrated, the as-prepared AWH devices presented high-efficient adsorption kinetics from 1.66 to 4.08 g g-1 at 30% to 90% relative humidity. Thus, this work strengthens the understanding of the water transmission process along microchannels and provides insight into the practical applications of AWH.

ABSTRACT

Durable superhydrophobic anti-erosion/anticorrosion coatings are highly demanded across various applications. However, achieving coatings with exceptional superhydrophobicity, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance remains a grand challenge. Herein, a robust microstructure coating, inspired by the cylindrical structures situated on the surface of conch shell, for mitigating erosion and corrosion damages in gas transportation pipelines is reported. Specifically, citric acid monohydrate as a pore-forming agent is leveraged to create a porous structure between layers, effectively buffering the impact on the surface. As a result, the coating demonstrates remarkable wear resistance and water repellency. Importantly, even after abrasion by sandpaper and an erosion loop test, the resulting superhydrophobic surfaces retain the water repellency. The design strategy offers a promising route to manufacturing multifunctional materials with desired features and structural complexities, thereby enabling effective self-cleaning and antifouling abilities in harsh operating environments for an array of applications, including self-cleaning windows, antifouling coatings for medical devices, and anti-erosion/anticorrosion protection, among other areas.

ABSTRACT

The development of conversion-typed anodes with ultrafast charging and large energy storage is quite challenging due to the sluggish ions/electrons transfer kinetics in bulk materials and fracture of the active materials. Herein, the design of porous carbon nanofibers/SnS2 composite (SnS2 @N-HPCNFs) for high-rate energy storage, where the ultrathin SnS2 nanosheets are nanoconfined in N-doped carbon nanofibers with tunable void spaces, is reported. The highly interconnected carbon nanofibers in three-dimensional (3D) architecture provide a fast electron transfer pathway and alleviate the volume expansion of SnS2 , while their hierarchical porous structure facilitates rapid ion diffusion. Specifically, the anode delivers a remarkable specific capacity of 1935.50 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and excellent rate capability up to 30 C with a specific capacity of 289.60 mAh g-1 . Meanwhile, at a high rate of 20 C, the electrode displays a high capacity retention of 84% after 3000 cycles and a long cycle life of 10 000 cycles. This work provides a deep insight into the construction of electrodes with high ionic/electronic conductivity for fast-charging energy storage devices.

ABSTRACT

Dedusting is crucial for air pollution control, and nonwoven needle felt (NWNF) bag-filters are widely applied for this purpose. Surface treatment of the filter materials can enhance NWNF's performance, but the large discrepancy in pore size between the surface and NWNF layers causes interface effects, impairing reverse cleaning and shortening service life. In this study, a novel PTFE membrane-laminated asymmetrical composite bag-filter was developed, by blending superfine polyphenylene sulfide fiber (PPS) in the original NWNF structure. Image analysis shows a gradual increase in pore size from the surface to the downstream layer. In standard lab-scale tests, the novel M-PPSF-S filter showed moderately higher resistance, significantly longer service life, higher dedusting efficiencies and better cleaning performance, compared to filters without surface laminating and/or superfine fiber blending. Numerical modelling was performed, and the flow fields and pressure distribution in these filter materials were visualized, confirming that M-PPSF-S' unique structure facilitated the alleviation of interface effect and non-steady flow. M-PPSF-S was further scaled up to treat real flue gas from a coal-fired power plant, where constant good performance was observed over 5 months. This study offers a novel and practical way to develop low-cost, high-performance filter materials for high temperature flue gas treatment.

ABSTRACT

Abstract: Air pollution caused by the rapid development of industry has always been a great issue to the environment and human being's health. However, the efficient and persistent filtration to PM0.3 remains a great challenge. Herein, a self-powered filter with micro-nano composite structure composed of polybutanediol succinate (PBS) nanofiber membrane and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber/polystyrene (PS) microfiber hybrid mats was prepared by electrospinning. The balance between pressure drop and filtration efficiency was achieved through the combination of PAN and PS. In addition, an arched TENG structure was created using the PAN nanofiber/PS microfiber composite mat and PBS fiber membrane. Driven by respiration, the two fiber membranes with large difference in electronegativity achieved contact friction charging cycles. The open-circuit voltage of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) can reach to about 8 V, and thus the high filtration efficiency for particles was achieved by the electrostatic capturing. After contact charging, the filtration efficiency of the fiber membrane for PM0.3 can reach more than 98% in harsh environments with a PM2.5 mass concentration of 23,000 µg/m3, and the pressure drop is about 50 Pa, which doesn't affect people's normal breathing. Meanwhile, the TENG can realize self-powered supply by continuously contacting and separating the fiber membrane driven by respiration, which can ensure the long-term stability of filtration efficiency. The filter mask can maintain a high filtration efficiency (99.4%) of PM0.3 for 48 consecutive hours in daily environments. ABSTRACT

Exploring eco-friendly and cost-effective strategies for structure engineering at the nanoscale is important for boosting heterogeneous catalysis but still under a long-standing challenge. Herein, multifunctional polyphenol tannic acid, a low-cost natural biomass containing catechol and galloyl species, was employed as a green reducing agent, chelating agent, and stabilizer to prepare Au nanoparticles, which were dispersed on different-shaped CeO2 supports (e.g., rod, flower, cube, and octahedral). Systematic characterizations revealed that Au/CeO2-rod had the highest oxygen vacancy density and Ce(III) proportion, favoring the dispersion and stabilization of the metal active sites. Using isopropanol as a hydrogen-transfer reagent, deep insights into the structure-activity relationship of the Au/CeO2 catalysts with various morphologies of CeO2 in the catalytic nitrobenzene transfer hydrogenation reaction were gained. Notably, the catalytic performance followed the order: Au/CeO2-rod (110), (100), (111) > Au/CeO2-flower (100), (111) > Au/CeO2-cube (100) > Au/CeO2-octa (111). Au/CeO2-rod displayed the highest conversion of 100% nitrobenzene and excellent stability under optimal conditions. Moreover, DFT calculations indicated that nitrobenzene molecules had a suitable adsorption energy and better isopropanol dehydrogenation capacity on the Au/CeO2 (110) surface. A reaction pathway and the synergistic catalytic mechanism for catalytic nitrobenzene transfer hydrogenation are proposed based on the results. This work demonstrates that CeO2 structure engineering is an efficient strategy for fabricating advanced and environmentally benign materials for nitrobenzene hydrogenation.

ABSTRACT

Hydrogen has a high energy density of approximately 120 to 140 MJ kg-1, which is very high compared to other natural energy sources. However, hydrogen generation through electrocatalytic water splitting is a high electricity consumption process due to the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). As a result, hydrogen generation through hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis has recently been intensively investigated. The hydrazine electrolysis process requires a low potential compared to the water electrolysis process. Despite this, the utilization of direct hydrazine fuel cells (DHFCs) as portable or vehicle power sources necessitates the development of inexpensive and effective anodic hydrazine oxidation catalysts. Here, we prepared oxygen-deficient zinc-doped nickel cobalt oxide (Zn-NiCoOx-z) alloy nanoarrays on stainless steel mesh (SSM) using a hydrothermal synthesis method followed by thermal treatment. Furthermore, the prepared thin films were used as electrocatalysts, and the OER and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) activities were investigated in three- and two-electrode systems. In a three-electrode system, Zn-NiCoOx-z/SSM HzOR requires -0.116 V (vs RHE) potential to achieve a 50 mA cm-2 current density, which is dramatically lower than the OER potential (1.493 V vs RHE). In a two-electrode system (Zn-NiCoOx-z/SSM(-)∥Zn-NiCoOx-z/SSM(+)), the overall hydrazine splitting potential (OHzS) required to reach 50 mA cm-2 is only 0.700 V, which is dramatically less than the required potential for overall water splitting (OWS). These excellent HzOR results are due to the binder-free oxygen-deficient Zn-NiCoOx-z/SSM alloy nanoarray, which provides a large number of active sites and improves the wettability of catalysts after Zn doping.

ABSTRACT

Rapid and efficient cleaning of oily wastewater and high viscosity crude oil spills is still a global challenge. Conventional three-dimensional porous adsorbents are ineffective for oil-water separation in harsh environment and are restricted to the low fluidity of high viscosity crude oil at room temperature. Increasing temperature can enormously improve the fluidity of viscous crude oil. Herein, the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) /carbon black (CB) -modified polyurethane sponge (PU) were prepared by a simple one-step dip-coating method. PDMS/CB@PU (PCPU) exhibits high adsorption capacity to various oils and organic liquid (28.5-68.7 g/g), strong mechanical properties (500 cycles at 50%), outstanding reusability (100 cycles of adsorption and desorption) and excellent environmental stability due to the special PDMS/CB coating. The maximum surface temperature of PCPU sponge can reach 84.7 â„ƒ under 1 sunlight irradiation. Therefore, the PCPU sponge can rapidly heat and enhance the fluidity of viscous crude oil, significantly speeding up the viscous oil recovery process with the maximum adsorption capacity of 44.7 g/g. In addition, the PCPU sponge can also combine with the vacuum pump to realize the continuous and rapid repair of viscous oil spills from the seawater surface. In consideration of its simple preparation, cost-effectiveness and high oil absorption ability, this solar-assisted self-heating adsorbent provides a new direction for large-scale cleanup and recycling of viscous crude oil spill on the seawater surface.

ABSTRACT

As an effective way to obtain freshwater resources, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology has been a wide concern of researchers. Therefore, hydrogels gradually become key materials for atmospheric water harvesters due to their high specific surface area and three-dimensional porous structure. Here, we construct a core-shell hydrogel-based atmospheric water harvesting material consisting of a shell sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) hydrogel with an open pore structure and a core thermosensitive poly N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm) hydrogel with a large pore size. Theoretically, the mutual synergistic hygroscopic effect between the core layer and the shell layer accelerates the capture, transport, and storage of moisture to achieve continuous and high-capacity moisture adsorption. Simultaneously, the integration of polydopamine (PDA) with the hydrogel realizes solar-driven photothermal evaporation. Therefore, the prepared core-shell hydrogel material possesses great advantages in water adsorption capacity and water desorption capacity with an adsorption of 2.76 g g-1 (90% RH) and a desorption of 1.42 kg m-2 h-1. Additionally, the core-shell structure hydrogel collects 1.31 g g-1 day-1 of fresh water in outdoor experiments, which verifies that this core-shell hydrogel with integrated photothermal properties can capture moisture in a wide range of humidity without any external energy consumption, can further sustainably obtain fresh water in remote water-shortage areas.

ABSTRACT

Desulfurization sorbent with a high active component utilization is of importance for the removal of H2S from coal gas at high temperatures. Thus, the hypothesis for producing ZnxCo3-xO4/carbon nanofiber sorbents via the combinations of electrospinning, in situ hydrothermal growth, and carbonization technique has been rationally constructed in this study. ZnxCo3-xO4 nanoparticles derived from metal-organic frameworks are uniformly loaded on the electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with high dispersion. ZnxCo3-xO4/CNFs sorbents possess the highest breakthrough sulfur adsorption capacity (12.4 g S/100 g sorbent) and an excellent utilization rate of the active component (83.2%). The excellent performance of ZnxCo3-xO4/CNFs can be attributed to the synergetic effect of the hierarchical structure and widely distributed ZnxCo3-xO4 on the CNFs supporter. The decomposition of Zn/Co-ZIFs not only generates the nucleus of oxides but also realizes their physical isolation through the formation of carbon grids on the surface of CNFs, avoiding the aggregation of oxides. Furthermore, ZnxCo3-xO4/CNFs sorbents show an overwhelming superiority over the ZnO/CNFs sorbent, which is attributed to the introduction of Co and then the promotion of the stability of Zn at high temperatures. The presence of Co also accelerates the adsorption of H2S on the active site of the oxide surface. The presented method is beneficial for promoting desulfurization performances and producing sorbents with high utilization of active components.

ABSTRACT

Wearable strain sensors have aroused increasing interest in human motion monitoring, even for the detection of small physiological signals such as joint movement and pulse. Stable monitoring of underwater human motion for a long time is still a notable challenge, as electronic devices can lose their effectiveness in a wet environment. In this study, a superhydrophobic and conductive knitted polyester fabric-based strain sensor was fabricated via dip coating of graphene oxide and polydimethylsiloxane micro/nanoparticles. The water contact angle of the obtained sample was 156°, which was retained above 150° under deformation (stretched to twice the original length or bent to 80°). Additionally, the sample exhibited satisfactory mechanical stability in terms of superhydrophobicity and conductivity after 300 abrasion cycles and 20 accelerated washing cycles. In terms of sensing performance, the strain sensor showed a rapid and obvious response to different deformations such as water vibration, underwater finger bending, and droplet shock. With the good combination of superhydrophobicity and conductivity, as well as the wearability and stretchability of the knitted polyester fabric, this wireless strain sensor connected with Bluetooth can allow for the remote monitoring of water sports, e.g., swimming, and can raise an alert under drowning conditions.

ABSTRACT

To date, multifunctional sensors have aroused widespread concerns owing to their vital roles in the healthcare area. However, there are still significant challenges in the fabrication of functionalized integrated devices. In this work, hydrophobic-hydrophilic patterns are constructed on polyester-spandex-blended knitted fabric surface by the chemical click method, enabling accurate deposition of functionalized materials for sensitive and stable motion and humidity sensing. Representatively, a conductive silver nanowire (Ag NW) network was deliberately deposited on only the designated hydrophilic fabric surface to realize accurate, repeatable, and stable motion sensing. Such a Ag NWs sensor recorded a low electrical resistance (below 60 Ω), stable resistance cycling response (over 2000 cycles), and fast response time to humidity (0.46 s) during the sensing evaluation. In addition to experimental sensing, real human motions, such as mouth-opening and joint-flexing (wrist and neck), could also be detected using the same sensor. Similar promising outputs were also obtained over the humidity sensor fabricated over the same chemical click method, except the sensing material was replaced with polydopamine-modified carboxylated carbon nanotubes. The resultant sensor exhibits excellent sensitivity to not only experimentally adjusted environment humidity but also to the moisture content of breath and skin during daily activities. On top of all these, both sensors were fabricated over highly flexible fabric that offers high wearability, promising great application potential in the field of healthcare monitoring.

ABSTRACT

Fluorine-free liquid-repellent coatings have been highly demanded for a variety of applications. However, rapid formation of coatings possessing outstanding oil repellency and strong bonding ability as well as good mechanical strength (e.g., bendability, impact resistance, and scratch resistance) remains a grand challenge. Herein, a robust strategy to rapidly create fluorine-free oil-repellent coatings in only 30 s via rational design of a semi-interpenetrating polymer network structure is reported. The resulting coating manifests strong bonding capability both in air and underwater. More importantly, it not only provides unprecedented oil repellency, even to high-viscosity crude oil, but also achieves both excellent bendability and hardness. This simple yet effective design strategy opens up a new avenue to manufacture multifunctional materials and devices with desirable features and structural complexities for applications in sustainable antifouling, drag reduction, nondestructive transportation, liquid collection, and biomedicine, among other areas.

ABSTRACT

The realization of solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) process lies in the success development of materials with excellent photoelectric properties. Past reports identified TiO2, upon modified with both Cd and ZnIn2S4 (ZIS), exhibits promising PEC performance; however, at the cost of tedious preparation. In view of this, our work proposes a facile one-step hydrothermal strategy to deposit both modifiers onto the pre-obtained TiO2 nanotubes (NTs), realizing rose-like TiO2/ZnIn2S4 (TiO2/ZIS) or tremella-like TiO2/Cd:ZnIn2S4 (TiO2/Cd:ZIS) with improved PEC performances. Interestingly, the thickness of ZIS petals, which deposited on top of TiO2 NTs, is positively-correlated to its Cd-composition, signifying the substitutional doping of Cd into the unit cell of ZIS. This renders robust ionic interactions between the constituents, prompting the enhanced optical properties of TiO2 in conjecture to its reduced impedance. As a result, the recombination rate of photo-electric-derived carriers was drastically suppressed, with an improved photocurrent density of 606.2 µA cm-2 recorded by TiO2/Cd:ZIS photoanode under solar irradiation. Such performance is 80 times and 5.16 times higher than those of bare TiO2 NTs and TiO2/ZIS counterparts. The photoconversion efficiencies in terms of incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and applied bias photon current efficiency (ABPE) for TiO2/Cd:ZIS were significantly improved too, recorded at 1.12% and 0.38%, respectively, under standard evaluation condition. As summary, our work proposes a facile one-step hydrothermal approach that simultaneously-deposit both Cd and ZIS onto TiO2 photoanode for an enhanced PEC performance. This opens up a wider horizon for PEC technology, further unlocking its potential in both energy and environmental applications.
