ABSTRACT

We present the fabrication of 4 K-scale electrochemical random-access memory (ECRAM) cross-point arrays for analog neural network training accelerator and an electrical characteristic of an 8 × 8 ECRAM array with a 100% yield, showing excellent switching characteristics, low cycle-to-cycle, and device-to-device variations. Leveraging the advances of the ECRAM array, we showcase its efficacy in neural network training using the Tiki-Taka version 2 algorithm (TTv2) tailored for non-ideal analog memory devices. Through an experimental study using ECRAM devices, we investigate the influence of retention characteristics on the training performance of TTv2, revealing that the relative location of the retention convergence point critically determines the available weight range and, consequently, affects the training accuracy. We propose a retention-aware zero-shifting technique designed to optimize neural network training performance, particularly in scenarios involving cross-point devices with limited retention times. This technique ensures robust and efficient analog neural network training despite the practical constraints posed by analog cross-point devices.

ABSTRACT

This research examines the low rate of co-administration of influenza and COVID-19 vaccines among seniors aged 65 and older in Korea, despite recommendations from authorities and academia worldwide. The study aimed to understand the influence of general characteristics and health beliefs on the vaccination choices of seniors, who were categorized into four groups based on their vaccination status: influenza only, COVID-19 only, both, or neither. A total of 400 participants, aged 65 and above, were selected through proportional stratified random sampling from five major Korean regions for a survey conducted between November 24th and December 15th, 2023. The results indicated no significant differences in general characteristics across these groups. However, regarding the health beliefs showed significant differences in perceived susceptibility and self-efficacy between the influenza-only and co-administration groups. Higher levels of perceived susceptibility and self-efficacy were associated with choosing co-administration. Contrary to previous studies focusing on safety concerns as a primary factor in vaccine hesitancy, this study highlights the role of individual health-related beliefs, particularly perceived susceptibility and self-efficacy, as critical in influencing the decision for co-administration among the elderly in Korea.

ABSTRACT

Transmembrane proteins known as hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels control the movement of Na+ and K+ ions across cellular membranes. HCN channels are known to be involved in crucial physiological functions in regulating neuronal excitability and rhythmicity, and pacemaker activity in the heart. Although HCN channels have been relatively well investigated in the brain, their distribution and function in the retina have received less attention, remaining their physiological roles to be comprehensively understood. Also, because recent studies reported HCN channels have been somewhat linked with the dysfunction of photoreceptors which are affected by retinal diseases, investigating HCN channels in the retina may offer valuable insights into disease mechanisms and potentially contribute to identifying novel therapeutic targets for retinal degenerative disorders. This paper endeavors to summarize the existing literature on the distribution and function of HCN channels reported in the vertebrate retinas of various species and discuss the potential implications for the treatment of retinal diseases. Then, we recapitulate current knowledge regarding the function and regulation of HCN channels, as well as their relevance to various neurological disorders.

ABSTRACT

Ulaanbaatar (UB), the fast-growing capital of Mongolia, is known for its world's worst level of particulate matter (PM) concentrations in winter. However, current anthropogenic emission inventories over the UB are based on data from more than fifteen years ago, and satellite observations are scarce because UB is in high latitudes. During the winter of 2020-21, the first period of the Fine Particle Research Initiative in East Asia considering the National Differences (FRIEND), several times higher concentrations of PM in UB compared to other urban sites in East Asia were observed but not reproduced with a chemical transport model mainly due to the underestimated anthropogenic emissions. Therefore, we devised a method for sequentially adjusting emissions based on the reactivity of PM precursors using ground observations. We scaled emission rates for the inert species (CO, elemental carbon (EC), and organic carbon (OC)) to reproduce their observed ambient concentrations, followed by SO2 to reproduce the concentration of SO42-, which was examined to have the least uncertainty based on the abundance of observed NH3, and finally NO and NH3 for NO3-, and NH4+. This improved estimation is compared to regional inventories for Asia and suggests more than an order of magnitude increase in anthropogenic emissions in UB. Using the improved emission inventory, we were able to successfully reproduce independent observation data on PM2.5 concentrations in UB in December 2021 from the U.S. Embassy. During the campaign period, we found more than 50% of the SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+ increased in UB due to the improvement could travel to Beijing, China (BJ), and about 20% of the SO42- could travel to Noto, Japan (NT), more than 3000 km away. Also, the anthropogenic emissions in UB can effectively increase OC, NO3-, and NH4+ concentrations in BJ when Gobi dust storms occur.

ABSTRACT

Seoul has high PM2.5 concentrations and has not attained the national annual average standard so far. To understand the reasons, we analyzed long-term (2015-2021) hourly observations of aerosols (PM2.5, NO3-, NH4+, SO42-, OC, and EC) and gases (CO, NO2, and SO2) from Seoul and Baekryeong Island, a background site in the upwind region of Seoul. We applied the weather normalization method for meteorological conditions and a 3-dimensional chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem, to identify the effect of policy implementation and aerosol formation mechanisms. The monthly mean PM2.5 ranges between about 20 µg m-3 (warm season) and about 40 µg m-3 (cold season) at both sites, but the annual decreasing rates were larger at Seoul than at Baengnyeong (-0.7 µg m-3 a-1 vs. -1.8 µg m-3 a-1) demonstrating the effectiveness of the local air quality policies including the Special Act on Air Quality in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SAAQ-SMA) and the seasonal control measures. The weather-normalized monthly mean data shows the highest PM2.5 concentration in March and the lowest concentration in August throughout the 7 years with NO3- accounting for about 40 % of the difference between the two months at both sites. Taking together with the GEOS-Chem model results, which reproduced the elevated NO3- in March, we concluded the elevated atmospheric oxidant level increases in HNO3 (which is not available from the observation) and the still low temperatures in March promote rapid production of NO3-. We used Ox (≡ O3 + NO2) from the observation and OH from the GEOS-Chem as a proxy for the atmospheric oxidant level which can be a source of uncertainty. Thus, direct observations of OH and HNO3 are needed to provide convincing evidence. This study shows that reducing HNO3 levels through atmospheric oxidant level control in the cold season can be effective in PM2.5 mitigation in Seoul.

ABSTRACT

This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the security vulnerability known as rowhammer in Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM). While DRAM offers many desirable advantages, including low latency, high density, and cost-effectiveness, rowhammer vulnerability, first identified in 2014, poses a significant threat to computing systems. Rowhammer attacks involve repetitive access to specific DRAM rows, which can cause bit flips in neighboring rows, potentially compromising system credentials, integrity, and availability. The paper discusses the various stages of rowhammer attacks, explores existing attack techniques, and examines defense strategies. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding DRAM organization and the associated security challenges.

ABSTRACT

Analog in-memory computing synaptic devices are widely studied for efficient implementation of deep learning. However, synaptic devices based on resistive memory have difficulties implementing on-chip training due to the lack of means to control the amount of resistance change and large device variations. To overcome these shortcomings, silicon complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (Si-CMOS) and capacitor-based charge storage synapses are proposed, but it is difficult to obtain sufficient retention time due to Si-CMOS leakage currents, resulting in a deterioration of training accuracy. Here, a novel 6T1C synaptic device using only n-type indium gaIlium zinc oxide thin film transistor (IGZO TFT) with low leakage current and a capacitor is proposed, allowing not only linear and symmetric weight update but also sufficient retention time and parallel on-chip training operations. In addition, an efficient and realistic training algorithm to compensate for any remaining device non-idealities such as drifting references and long-term retention loss is proposed, demonstrating the importance of device-algorithm co-optimization.

ABSTRACT

The below-cloud aerosol scavenging process by precipitation is one of the most important mechanisms to remove aerosols from the atmosphere. Due to its complexity and dependence on both aerosol and raindrop sizes, wet scavenging process has been poorly treated, especially during the removal of fine particles. This makes the numerical simulation of below-cloud scavenging in large-scale aerosol models unrealistic. To consider the slip effects of submicron particles, a simplified expression for the diffusion scavenging was developed by approximating the Cunningham slip correction factor. The derived analytic solution was parameterized as a simple power function of rain intensity under the assumption of the lognormal size distribution of particles. The resultant approximated expression was compared to the observed data and the results of previous studies including a 3D atmospheric chemical transport model simulation. Compared with the default GEOS-Chem coefficient of 0.00106R0.61 and the observation-based coefficient of 0.0144R0.9268, the coefficient of a and b in Λm = aRb spread in the range of 0.0002- 0.1959 for a and 0.3261- 0.525 for b over a size distribution of GSD of 1.3-2.5 and a geometric mean diameter of 0.01- 2.5 µm. Overall, this study showed that the scavenging coefficient varies widely by orders of magnitude according to the size distribution of particles and rain intensity. This study also demonstrated that the obtained simplified expression could consider the theoretical approach of aerosol polydispersity. Our proposed analytic approach showed that results can be effectively applied for reduced computational burden in atmospheric modeling.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Echinosophora koreensis Nakai is an endemic plant species distributed in a limited area within the Korean province of Gangwon, including the Yanggu-gun, Inje-gun, Cheorwon-gun, Chuncheon-si, and Hongcheon-gun counties. It is used in traditional medicine to treat various disorders, such as fever, skin diseases, diuresis, and neuralgia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study demonstrated the effects of E. koreensis Nakai root extract (EKRE) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. Cell viability was assessed through a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Nitric oxide (NO) production was measured using Griess reagent. Interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels were assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) expression were assessed using Western blot analysis. To examine the effects of EKRE in vivo, it was administered orally at doses of 50 or 200 mg/kg for 3 days in mice. Edema in the paws was induced through λ-carrageenan injection and measured hourly for up to 5 h using calipers. RESULTS: EKRE markedly suppressed LPS-generated NO, IL-6, and iNOS production in RAW 264.7 cells. Moreover, it suppressed the activation of the NF-κB and MAPK in LPS-stimulated cells. Furthermore, EKRE significantly inhibited carrageenan-induced edema in mouse paws. There were no significant differences in IL-6 and TNF production in paw tissue harvested from mice, but levels decreased at high EKRE concentrations (200 mg/kg). CONCLUSION: The results of this study provided validation for EKRE-induced inhibition of inflammatory responses in vitro and in vivo. This research suggested that EKRE is a promising treatment for inflammatory disorders.

INTRODUCTION: There have been no previous studies comparing serial radiologic results between primary and revision Bankart repair despite the significance of capsulolabral height and slope restoration. The purpose of this study was (1) to compare serially the height and slope of the repaired labrum in the early postoperative period among primary and revision Bankart repair groups, and (2) to compare clinical outcomes between the two groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included each 24 patients who underwent arthroscopic primary Bankart repair (Group A) and revision Bankart repair (Group B) matched by age, sex, and glenoid defect ratio. Postoperative serial radiologic assessment of the repaired labral height and slope was proceeded using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomographic arthrography (CTA) at 3 weeks and 6 months. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in labral height and slope at 3 weeks and 6 months postoperatively in Group A. However, significant reductions in labral height and slope were evident between 3 weeks and 6 months postoperatively in Group B (P < 0.05). Group A yielded superior results to Group B with respect to labral height and slope at each time point (P < 0.05) in between-group analyses. The clinical outcomes were not significantly different between the two groups except for the patients' return to their premorbid sports activity level (P = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: The height and slope of the repaired capsulolabral structures in the early postoperative period after arthroscopic revision Bankart repair group were significantly lower than those of the primary Bankart repair group. Also the reduction of labral height and slope was significant in the revision Bankart repair group over time. Nonetheless, clinical outcomes did not differ significantly except return to premorbid sports activity level at final follow-up.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to report the prevalence and identify the factors associated with excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) among emergency physicians in South Korea. We analyzed the Korean Emergency Physicians Survey data from 15 January to 26 February 2021. EDS was evaluated using the Epworth sleepiness scale, and a score of 11 or more indicated the presence of EDS. We conducted univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses to verify the associated factors. A total of 1307 participants responded to the survey, and the response rate was 61.3%. Nine hundred fifty-four participants were included in the study. Two hundred ninety-three participants were classified as the EDS group, and six hundred sixty-one were classified as the non-EDS group. The prevalence of EDS was 30.7% (95% confidence interval (CI), 27.8-33.6%). Monthly night-shift days (odds ratio (OR) 1.106, 95% CI 1.028-1.191) and depression (OR 2.635, 95% CI 1.799-3.861) were significantly associated with an increased risk of EDS, and fair sleep quality (OR 0.560, 95% CI 0.318-0.985) was associated with a decreased risk of EDS. Almost one in three emergency physicians in South Korea suffer from daytime sleepiness. The number of monthly night-shift days and depression were associated with an increased risk of EDS.

ABSTRACT

Implantable medical devices capable of monitoring hundreds to thousands of electrodes have received great attention in biomedical applications for understanding of the brain function and to treat brain diseases such as epilepsy, dystonia, and Parkinson's disease. Non-invasive neural recording modalities such as fMRI and EEGs were widely used since the 1960s, but to acquire better information, invasive modalities gained popularity. Since such invasive neural recording system requires high efficiency and low power operation, they have been implemented as integrated circuits. Many techniques have been developed and applied when designing integrated high-density neural recording architecture for better performance, higher efficiency, and lower power consumption. This paper covers general knowledge of neural signals and frequently used neural recording architectures for monitoring neural activity. For neural recording architecture, various neural recording amplifier structures are covered. In addition, several neural processing techniques, which can optimize the neural recording system, are also discussed.

ABSTRACT

We aim to reduce uncertainties in CH2O and other volatile organic carbon (VOC) emissions through assimilation of remote sensing data. We first update a three-dimensional (3D) chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem with the KORUSv5 anthropogenic emission inventory and inclusion of chemistry for aromatics and C2H4, leading to modest improvements in simulation of CH2O (normalized mean bias (NMB): -0.57 to -0.51) and O3 (NMB: -0.25 to -0.19) compared against DC-8 aircraft measurements during KORUS-AQ; the mixing ratio of most VOC species are still underestimated. We next constrain VOC emissions using CH2O observations from two satellites (OMI and OMPS) and the DC-8 aircraft during KORUS-AQ. To utilize data from multiple platforms in a consistent manner, we develop a two-step Hybrid Iterative Finite Difference Mass Balance and four-dimensional variational inversion system (Hybrid IFDMB-4DVar). The total VOC emissions throughout the domain increase by 47%. The a posteriori simulation reduces the low biases of simulated CH2O (NMB: -0.51 to -0.15), O3 (NMB: -0.19 to -0.06), and VOCs. Alterations to the VOC speciation from the 4D-Var inversion include increases of biogenic isoprene emissions in Korea and anthropogenic emissions in Eastern China. We find that the IFDMB method alone is adequate for reducing the low biases of VOCs in general; however, 4D-Var provides additional refinement of high-resolution emissions and their speciation. Defining reasonable emission errors and choosing optimal regularization parameters are crucial parts of the inversion system. Our new hybrid inversion framework can be applied for future air quality campaigns, maximizing the value of integrating measurements from current and upcoming geostationary satellite instruments.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a hybrid load-shift keying (LSK) modulation for a load-insensitive back telemetry system to realize near-constant voltage changes in a primary coil (L1) against a wide range of load variations. The hybrid-LSK-enabled full-wave rectifier enables the sequential combination of open- and short-coil functions for hybrid-LSK modulation in addition to wireless power conversion operation. Load-insensitive L1 voltage changes can be demodulated using the proposed slope- based demodulator, which utilizes the threshold slope of L1 voltage changes over the back data pulse width, enabling robust data recovery regardless of the load conditions. The 0.56-mm2 0.18-µm standard CMOS hybrid-LSK prototype demonstrated that the variation of L1 voltage changes could be minimized to 60 mV under load changes between 50 Ω and 50 kΩ at coil separation distance of 10 mm, achieving 88.2% reduction compared to the conventional short-coil LSK with 510 mV variation. The proposed back telemetry system also achieved a bit error rate (BER) of < 9.1 × 10-10 under load ranges from 50 Ω to 50 kΩ and data rate of 1 Mbps, ensuring reliable back data recovery against load variations.

ABSTRACT

South Korea has experienced a rapid increase in ozone concentrations in surface air together with China for decades. Here we use a 3-D global chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem nested over East Asia (110 E - 140 E, 20 N-50 N) at 0.25° × 0.3125° resolution, to examine locally controllable (domestic anthropogenic) versus uncontrollable (background) contributions to ozone air quality at the national scale for 2016. We conducted model simulations for representative months of each season: January, April, July, and October for winter, spring, summer, and fall and performed extensive model evaluation by comparing simulated ozone with observations from satellite and surface networks. The model appears to reproduce observed spatial and temporal ozone variations, showing correlation coefficients (0.40-0.87) against each observation dataset. Seasonal mean ozone concentrations in the model are the highest in spring (39.3 ± 10.3 ppb), followed by summer (38.3 ± 14.4 ppb), fall (31.2 ± 9.8 ppb), and winter (24.5 ± 7.9 ppb), which is consistent with that of surface observations. Background ozone concentrations obtained from a sensitivity model simulation with no domestic anthropogenic emissions show a different seasonal variation in South Korea, showing the highest value in spring (46.9 ± 3.4 ppb) followed by fall (38.2 ± 3.7 ppb), winter (33.0 ± 1.9 ppb), and summer (32.1 ± 6.7 ppb). Except for summer, when the photochemical formation is dominant, the background ozone concentrations are higher than the seasonal ozone concentrations in the model, indicating that the domestic anthropogenic emissions play a role as ozone loss via NOx titration throughout the year. Ozone air quality in South Korea is determined mainly by year-round regional background contributions (peak in spring) with summertime domestic ozone formation by increased biogenic VOCs emissions with persistent NOx emissions throughout the year. The domestic NOx emissions reduce MDA8 ozone around large cities (Seoul and Busan) and hardly increase MDA8 in other regions in spring, but it increases MDA8 across the country in summer. Therefore, NOx reduction can be effective in control of MDA8 ozone in summer, but it can have rather countereffect in spring.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depression and sleep-wake disorders are recognized as one of the major problems among emergency physicians. While depression is more common in females than in males, the associated factors linking depression and sleep-wake disorders in emergency physicians, particularly females, remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the prevalence of depression and sleep-wake problems among emergency medicine (EM) residents in South Korea and to identify the gender differences and situations that adversely predispose female residents to mental health problems. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using the data collected from the 2019 National EM Residents Wellness Survey targeting all of 630 EM residents in South Korea. The survey included variables potentially influencing depression and sleep-wake problems, such as personal characteristics, work-related stress, and extrinsic environment. Information regarding medical conditions, depression, job stress, and sleep deprivation was obtained using the self-administered Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the Apgar Wellness Score (AWS), and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). We analyzed the data using IBM SPSS Statistics version 25 and MedCalc version 17. RESULTS: A total of 384 residents participated in the survey. Overall, 27.5% of the EM residents met the criteria for at least moderate depression and 36.9% of the EM residents had sleep-related problems. We found that difficulty in trading the shift schedule and frequent night shifts was associated with depression (p = .001, p = .005; respectively). Female residents demonstrated an increased risk of depression and sleepiness compared to their male counterparts (odds ratio [OR] 1.95, OR 1.81; respectively). In addition, logistic regression analysis revealed significant differences by gender in depression with regards to flexibility of trading shifts (p = .005), level of training in the emergency medical centre (p = .035), and frequent night shifts (p = .010). CONCLUSIONS: Approximately, one-third of EM residents report depression and sleep-wake problems, with female residents showing a higher risk than male residents. Several risk factors were identified, and future strategies should be aimed to address these issues to improve the training environment and overall wellbeing of EM residents.KEY MESSAGESThe prevalence of depression and sleep-related problems were, respectively, 1.95 and 1.81 times higher in female residents compared to their male colleagues.The associated risk factors for depression were flexibility of shift trade, level of training in the emergency medical centre, and frequency of night shifts.Improving the training environment and facilities, as well as offering more flexible duty trading options can provide potential opportunities to reduce the risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Anesthesia preoperative evaluation clinics (APECs) are currently operating in several South Korean hospitals. While several studies have investigated the impact of APEC operations on the length of total hospital stay (LTHS), few have investigated their impact on the length of preoperative hospital stay (LPHS) for patients. In this study, we aimed to determine whether APEC affected the LPHS and LTHS. METHODS: Data of all patients who underwent surgery at Chungbuk National University Hospital between September 2009 and August 2019 were analyzed retrospectively. All patients who had undergone laparoscopic cholecystectomy over the last 10 years were categorized into two groups: those who visited the APEC (Group A), and those who did not (Group B). The age, sex, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status score, LPHS, and LTHS of the two groups were compared. RESULTS: The LPHS was 1.03±0.2 days in Group A and 1.61±1.6 days in Group B. The LTHS was 4.77±1.9 days in Group A and 5.63±2.6 days in Group B. The LPHS and LTHS of the two groups differed by 0.58 and 0.9 days, respectively. CONCLUSION: We evaluated the effect of APEC operations on the LPHS and LTHS of inpatients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and observed a decrease in both the LPHS and LTHS. Understanding and accepting the importance of APEC is significant for physicians and administrators working to improve hospital efficiency and patient outcomes. Further research is needed to investigate the need and benefits of APECs.

ABSTRACT

A 57-year-old man underwent lumbar selective nerve root block (SNRB) for low back pain and lower radiating pain caused by left-sided L4 disc herniation. He presented to the emergency department with fever, headache and aggravated low back pain approximately 3 hours after the procedure. Infection was suspected; hence, blood tests, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) tests, lumbar magnetic resonance imaging, and brain computed tomography were performed. Imaging findings were not suggestive of infection. The CSF was turbid and yellowish with pleiocytosis; however, the CSF culture was negative. Based on these findings, the patient was diagnosed with acute meningitis. Broad-spectrum antibiotics and steroid therapy were initiated considering the patient's age and general condition. From hospital day (HD) 2, fever and headache were reduced and disappeared completely by HD 5. At the last follow-up, 1 month after discharge, the patient had no symptoms. Acute meningitis is associated with a high mortality and neurologic deficits. Hence, timely tests, diagnosis, and treatment are critical for positive outcomes. Symptoms of meningitis following a nerve block generally occur within 24-48 hours after the procedure. This case is notable, as it involved a quicker and more sudden onset of symptoms; meningitis occurred only a few hours after lumbar selective nerve root block.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Excessive general joint laxity, a negative prognostic factor in joint instability, has not been studied to determine its relationship with bipolar bone loss in anterior shoulder instability. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of bipolar bone defects in the presence of excessive joint laxity and the clinical outcomes based on the on-track/off-track theory. We hypothesized that (1) patients with excessive joint laxity might have less significant bipolar bone defects compared with those without excessive joint laxity and (2) no significant difference would be found in the clinical outcomes, including recurrence rate. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: This study included 81 patients who had undergone arthroscopic Bankart repair, with (group L; n = 33) or without (group N; n = 48) excessive joint laxity. The presence of excessive joint laxity was defined as a score of ≥4 using Beighton and Horan criteria preoperatively. Bipolar bone lesions were assessed using preoperative 3-dimensional computed tomography. Additional remplissage was performed for cases with off-track or positive engagement test in borderline on-track lesions. The functional outcomes at the 2-year follow-up were assessed using the recurrence rate, Subjective Shoulder Value, Rowe score, University of California Los Angeles shoulder score, active range of motion, and the sports/recreation activity level. RESULTS: No significant difference was found in the glenoid bone defect between groups (14.1%, group L; 14.4%, group N). Off-track lesions were identified in 39.4% (13/33) of group L and 14.6% (7/48) of group N (P = .011). The mean Hill-Sachs interval to glenoid track ratio was 83.1% in group L and 75.2% in group N (P = .021). Additional remplissage procedures were more frequently performed in group L (48.5%; 16/33) than in group N (16.7%; 8/48) (P = .002). However, no significant difference was observed in the shoulder functional scores and recurrence rates between the groups. CONCLUSION: Patients with anterior shoulder instability and excessive joint laxity had significantly wider Hill-Sachs lesions and more off-track lesions than did those with normal joint laxity despite the lack of a significant difference in the glenoid bone defect. However, these differences in the Hill-Sachs lesion were not related to differences in the functional outcomes between the groups.
