ABSTRACT

Hydrogels are an attractive category of biointerfacing materials with adjustable mechanical properties, diverse biochemical functions, and good ionic conductivity. Despite these advantages, their application in electronics has been restricted because of their lack of semiconducting properties, and they have traditionally only served as insulators or conductors. We developed single- and multiple-network hydrogels based on a water-soluble n-type semiconducting polymer, endowing conventional hydrogels with semiconducting capabilities. These hydrogels show good electron mobilities and high on/off ratios, enabling the fabrication of complementary logic circuits and signal amplifiers with low power consumption and high gains. We demonstrate that hydrogel electronics with good bioadhesive and biocompatible interface can sense and amplify electrophysiological signals with enhanced signal-to-noise ratios.

ABSTRACT

Conjugated polymers have demonstrated promising optoelectronic properties, but their brittleness and poor mechanical characteristics have hindered their fabrication into durable fibers and textiles. Here, we report a universal approach to continuously producing highly strong, ultratough conjugated polymer fibers using a flow-enhanced crystallization (FLEX) method. These fibers exhibit one order of magnitude higher tensile strength (>200 megapascals) and toughness (>80 megajoules per cubic meter) than traditional semiconducting polymer fibers and films, outperforming many synthetic fibers, ready for scalable production. These fibers also exhibit unique strain-enhanced electronic properties and exceptional performance when used as stretchable conductors, thermoelectrics, transistors, and sensors. This work not only highlights the influence of fluid mechanical effects on the crystallization and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers but also opens up exciting possibilities for integrating these functional fibers into wearable electronics.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Basic leucine zipper and W2 domains 2 (BZW2), a member of the basic domain leucine zipper superfamily of transcription factors, has been implicated in the development and progression of various cancers. However, the precise biological role of BZW2 in pan-cancer datasets remains to be explored. This study aimed to assess the prognostic significance of BZW2 and its immune-related signatures in various tumors. METHODS: Our study investigated the expression, epigenetic modifications, and clinical prognostic relevance of BZW2 using multi-omics data in different cancer types. Additionally, the immunological characteristics, tumor stemness, drug sensitivity, and correlation of BZW2 with immunotherapy response were explored. Finally, in vitro experiments were conducted to assess the impact of BZW2 knockdown on Hela cells, a cell line derived from cervical squamous cell carcinoma and endocervical adenocarcinoma (CESC). RESULTS: BZW2 exhibited elevated expression levels in various tumor tissues and significantly impacted the prognosis of different cancer types. BZW2 emerged as an independent prognostic factor in CESC. We found that copy number amplification and methylation levels of BZW2 were associated with its mRNA expression. Immunological analyses revealed that BZW2 shapes a non-inflamed immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment across multiple cancers. Furthermore, our cell experiments demonstrated that BZW2 knockdown reduced proliferation, migration, and apoptosis activities in CESC cells. CONCLUSIONS: BZW2 promotes cancer progression by shaping a non-inflamed immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. Additionally, BZW2 was shown to significantly influence the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis of CESC cells.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the association between dietary Se intake and CVD risk in Chinese adults. DESIGN: This prospective cohort study included adults above 20 years old in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), and they were followed up from 1997 to 2015 (n 16 030). Dietary data were retrieved from CHNS, and a 3-d, 24-h recall of food intake was used to assess the cumulative average intake of dietary Se, which was divided into quartiles. The Cox proportional hazards model was adopted to analyse the association between dietary Se intake and incident CVD risk. SETTING: CHNS (1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2015). RESULTS: A total of 663 respondents developed CVD after being followed up for a mean of 9·9 years (median 9 years). The incidence of CVD was 4·3, 3·7, 4·6 and 4·0 per 1000 person-years across the quartiles of cumulative Se intake. After adjusting all potential factors, no significant associations were found between cumulative Se intake and CVD risk. No interactions were found between Se intake and income, urbanisation, sex, region, weight, hypertension and CVD risk. CONCLUSION: We found no association between dietary Se and CVD.

ABSTRACT

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have attracted increasing attention due to their merits of high transconductance, low operating voltage, and good biocompatibility, ideal for biosensors. However, further advances in their practical applications face challenges of low n-type performance and poor stability. Here, it is demonstrated that wet-spinning the commercially available n-type conjugated polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) into highly aligned and crystalline fibers enhances both OECT performance and stability. Although BBL is only soluble in high-boiling-point strong acids, it can be wet-spun into high-quality fibers with adjustable diameters. The BBL fiber OECTs exhibit a record-high area-normalized transconductance (gm,A ) of 2.40 µS µm-2 and over 10 times higher figure-of-merit (µC*) than its thin-film counterparts. More importantly, these fiber OECTs exhibit remarkable stability with no noticeable performance attenuation after 1500 cycles over 4 h operation, outperforming all previously reported n-type OECTs. The superior performance and stability can be attributed to shorter π-π stacking distance and ordered molecular arrangement in the fibers, endowing the BBL fiber OECT-based biosensors with outstanding sensitivity while keeping a miniaturized form factor. This work demonstrates that, beyond new material development, developing new fabrication technology is also crucial for addressing the performance and stability issues in n-type OECTs.

ABSTRACT

Conjugated polymers that can efficiently transport both ionic and electronic charges have broad applications in next-generation optoelectronic, bioelectronic, and energy storage devices. To date, almost all the conjugated polymers have hydrophobic backbones, which impedes efficient ion diffusion/transport in aqueous media. Here, we design and synthesize a novel hydrophilic polymer building block, 4a-azonia-naphthalene (AN), drawing inspiration from biological systems. Because of the strong electron-withdrawing ability of AN, the AN-based polymers show typical n-type charge transport behaviors. We find that cationic aromatics exhibit strong cation-π interactions, leading to smaller π-π stacking distance, interesting ion diffusion behavior, and good morphology stability. Additionally, AN enhances the hydrophilicity and ionic-electronic coupling of the polymer, which can help to improve ion diffusion/injection speed, and operational stability of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The integration of cationic building blocks will undoubtedly enrich the material library for high-performance n-type conjugated polymers.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease that poses a serious threat to children all over the world. However, the current prediction models for HFMD still require improvement in accuracy. In this study, we proposed a hybrid model based on autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and long short-term memory (LSTM) to predict the trend of HFMD. METHODS: The data used in this study was sourced from the National Clinical Research Center for Child Health and Disorders, Chongqing, China. The daily reported incidence of HFMD from 1 January 2015 to 27 July 2023 was collected to develop an ARIMA-EEMD-LSTM hybrid model. ARIMA, LSTM, ARIMA-LSTM and EEMD-LSTM models were developed to compare with the proposed hybrid model. Root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and coefficient of determination (R2) were adopted to evaluate the performances of the prediction models. RESULTS: Overall, ARIMA-EEMD-LSTM model achieved the most accurate prediction for HFMD, with RMSE, MAPE and R2 of 4.37, 2.94 and 0.996, respectively. Performing EEMD on the residual sequence yields 11 intrinsic mode functions. EEMD-LSTM model is the second best, with RMSE, MAPE and R2 of 6.20, 3.98 and 0.996. CONCLUSION: Results showed the advantage of ARIMA-EEMD-LSTM model over the ARIMA model, the LSTM model, the ARIMA-LSTM model and the EEMD-LSTM model. For the prevention and control of epidemics, the proposed hybrid model may provide a more powerful help. Compared with other three models, the two integrated with EEMD method showed significant improvement in predictive capability, offering novel insights for modeling of disease time series.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of folic acid combined with decitabine on diabetic mice. METHODS: The diabetic model of db/db mice were randomly divided into model group, folic acid group, decitabine group, folic acid combined with decitabine group, and C57 mice as normal control group. The density of retinal blood vessels and retinal thickness were detected by fundus photography and optical coherence tomography, respectively. Pathological changes of retina were observed by hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. The homocysteine (Hcy) in serum was detected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) was used to detect apoptosis in retinal tissue. Evans blue dye was used to detect the permeability of retinal blood vessels. The platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (CD31) and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor (VEGFR) protein were detected by Western blot. The 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) and 4-hydroxynonanine (4-HNE) were detected by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: The density of retinal blood vessels, retinal thickness, retinal vascular permeability and the proportion of apoptotic cells of retinal tissue in the model group increased significantly than control group (P<0.05). The Hcy in serum and the levels of CD31, VEGFR, 3-NT, and 4-HNE in retinal tissue increased significantly in the model group (P<0.01). Folic acid and decitabine both reversed these changes significantly, and the combination of the folic acid and decitabine worked best. CONCLUSION: The combination of folic acid and decitabine has a more significant protective effect on the retina in diabetic mice.

BACKGROUND: Thrombospondins (TSPs) play important roles in several cardiovascular diseases. However, the association between circulating (plasma) thrombospondin 2 (TSP2) and essential hypertension remains unclear. The present study was aimed to investigate the association of circulating TSP2 with blood pressure and nocturnal urine Na+ excretion and evaluate the predictive value of circulating TSP2 in subjects with hypertension. METHODS AND RESULTS: 603 newly diagnosed essential hypertensive subjects and 508 healthy subjects were preliminarily screened, 47 healthy subjects and 40 newly diagnosed essential hypertensive subjects without any chronic diseases were recruited. The results showed that the levels of circulating TSP2 were elevated in essential hypertensive subjects. The levels of TSP2 positively associated with systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and other clinical parameters, including homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity, and serum triglycerides, but negatively associated with nocturnal urine Na+ concentration and excretion and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Results of multiple linear regressions showed that HOMA-IR and nocturnal Na+ excretion were independent factors related to circulating TSP2. Mantel-Haenszel chi-square test displayed linear relationships between TSP2 and SBP (χ2 = 35.737) and DBP (χ2 = 26.652). The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of hypertension prediction was 0.901. CONCLUSION: Our study suggests for the first time that the circulating levels of TSP2 may be a novel potential biomarker for essential hypertension. The association between TSP2 and blood pressure may be, at least in part, related to the regulation of renal Na+ excretion, insulin resistance, and/or endothelial function.

OBJECTIVES: Parenchymal-sparing hepatectomy (PSH) is recommended in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM). Based on the principle of PSH, to investigate the impact of anatomical resection (AR) and non-anatomic resection (NAR) on the outcome of CRLM and to evaluate the potential prognostic impact of three peritumoral imaging features. METHODS: Fifty-six patients who had abdominal gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before CRLM surgery were included in this retrospective research. Peritumoral early enhancement, peritumoral hypointensity on hepatobiliary phase (HBP), and biliary dilatation to the CRLM at MRI were evaluated. Survival estimates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and multivariate analysis was conducted to identify independent predictors of liver recurrence-free survival (LRFS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS). RESULTS: NAR had a lower 3-year LRFS compared with AR (36.6% vs. 78.6%, p = 0.012). No significant differences were found in 3-year RFS (34.1% vs. 41.7%) and OS (61.7% vs. 81.3%) (p > 0.05). In NAR group, peritumoral early enhancement was associated with poor LRFS (p = < 0.001, hazard ratio [HR] = 6.260; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.322,16.876]) and poor RFS (p = 0.035, HR =2.516; 95% CI, 1.069,5.919). No independent predictors of CRLM were identified in the AR group. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with CRLM, peritumoral early enhancement was a predictor of LRFS and RFS after NAR according to the principle of PSH.

ABSTRACT

Background: The association between the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) score and the risk of initial cognitive function impairment is inconclusive. We aimed to identify distinctive IADL trajectories and examine their relationship with the onset of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among Chinese older people. Methods: The study used six-wave longitudinal data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey conducted between 2002 and 2018. It included a total of 11,044 Chinese people aged 65 years or older. A group-based trajectory model was used to identify distinctive trajectories of the IADL score, and the Cox proportional hazards model was used to explore the hazard ratio of various trajectories at the onset of MCI. Interaction analysis was used to analyze individual modification between the IADL trajectories and the onset of MCI. Finally, we adopted four types of sensitivity analysis to verify the robustness of the results. Results: During a median follow-up of 16 years, the incidence of MCI was 6.29 cases per 1,000 person-years (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.92-6.68). Three distinct IADL trajectory groups were identified: a low-risk IADL group (41.4%), an IADL group with increasing risk (28.5%), and a high-risk IADL group (30.4%). Using the Cox proportional hazards model after adjusting for covariates, we found that compared with the low risk IADL group, the hazard ratio of the IADL group with increasing risk was 4.49 (95% CI = 3.82-5.28), whereas that of the high-risk IADL group was 2.52 (95% CI 2.08-3.05). Treating the IADL group with increasing risk as the reference, the hazard ratio for the high-risk IADL group was 0.56 (95% CI 0.48-0.66). Interaction analyses showed that age and residence were significant moderators (P for interaction <0.05). Conclusion: A group-based trajectory model was developed to classify older people into three distinct trajectory groups of the IADL score. The IADL group with increasing risk had a greater risk of MCI than the high-risk IADL group. In the IADL group with increasing risk, city residents of ≥80 years were the most likely to develop MCI.

ABSTRACT

Background: Menopausal women may experience menopausal syndrome and long-term effects caused by low estrogen levels, such as senile dementia and osteoporosis in the elderly. Most menopausal women may have misconceptions about menopause and low use of pharmacological interventions. These misconceptions may damage the quality of life and miss the critical period for preventing senile diseases. Thus, enhancing the awareness of menopausal women regarding psychosocial and physical changes through health education programs was a way to improve positive attitudes toward menopause and make further treatment options. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of multidisciplinary health education based on lifestyle medicine on menopausal syndrome and lifestyle behaviors of menopausal women. Methods: The study was conducted in several hospitals in Chongqing, China. The two groups were from different hospitals with similar medical levels in order to reduce information contamination. It was designed as a clinical controlled trial in which the intervention group (n = 100) and control group (n = 87) were matched for age, age at menarche, menopausal symptoms and drug use status at enrollment. Women in the intervention group received multidisciplinary health education based on lifestyle medicine for 2 months while those in the control group received routine outpatient health guidance. Menopausal syndrome, physical activity and dietary status of participants were assessed before and after the intervention. Paired t-tests and Independent-sample t-tests were adopted for comparison within and between groups, respectively, in the normal variables. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Mann-Whitney U tests were adopted for comparison within and between group, respectively, in the abnormal variables. Categorical variables were tested using Pearson's χ2. P-value < 0.05 was statistically significant in statistical tests. Results: Post intervention testing indicated that menopausal syndrome of participants was significantly improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). Between-group comparison showed a significant improvement of weekly energy expenditure of total physical activity (P = 0.001) and participation in exercise (P < 0.001) in the intervention group compared to the control group after the intervention. The dietary status of participants was significantly improved in the intervention group compared to the control group (P < 0.001). In the intervention group, the menopausal syndrome of participants improved more in the hormone drug group than in the non-hormone group (P = 0.007), as did the control group (P = 0.02). In the hormone drug group, the physical activity (P = 0.003) and dietary status (P = 0.001) mproved more in the intervention group than in the control group. Conclusions: The multidisciplinary health education based on lifestyle medicine was effective in improving the menopausal syndrome and healthy lifestyle behaviors of menopausal women. Studies with extended observation period and larger sample size are in need to evaluate the long-term scale-up effects of the multidisciplinary health education.

OBJECTIVES: Rural-to-urban migrant workers are susceptible to hepatitis B because of lack of self-protection awareness and social support. The aim of this study was to explore the factors influencing risk behaviours for hepatitis B among migrant workers based on the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Chongqing, China PARTICIPANT: Migrant workers PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcomes were the TPB variables. The secondary outcomes were factors explored by logistic regressions which were associated with hepatitis B related risk behaviours and behavioural intentions (BI). RESULTS: Of 1299 recruited migrant workers, 384 (29.56%) participants undertook risk behaviours related to hepatitis B virus infection in the 6 months prior to the survey, and 1111 (85.53%) migrant workers had the BI of doing so. Of 842 migrant workers who undertook sexual activities, 58.19% did not use condoms. Binary logistic regressions showed that migrant workers who were men (p<0.05), less educated (p<0.01), lacked hepatitis B knowledge (p<0.05) and of a young age (p<0.01), were more intent on conducting hepatitis B-related behaviours. Alcohol drinking (p<0.01) was also positively associated with hepatitis B risk. The scores of TPB variables, including attitude towards behaviour and subjective norms, were positively associated with BI when adjusted for sociodemographics (p<0.001). Meanwhile, experience of behaviour and regret feeling were positively associated with BI and actual behaviours (p<0.01 and p<0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: A considerable proportion of migrant workers undertake hepatitis B-related risk behaviours, and condoms are seldom used. Health education campaigns targeting the identified TPB variables may play a significant role in improving awareness of hepatitis B prevention among migrant workers, especially for those who are men, younger, alcohol drinkers, less educated and lacking hepatitis B knowledge.

Background: Research on the association between blood lead (Pb) and lipid biomarkers have yielded inconsistent results, and epidemiological studies on blood Pb levels and hyperlipidemia are scarce. The present study aimed to examine the association between blood Pb levels and hyperlipidemia in adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: A total of 43,196 participants in the NHANES from 1999 to 2018 were included in the final analysis. Hyperlipidemia was determined based on the National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines. Blood Pb levels were assessed using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis and subgroup analysis were conducted to determine the correlation between blood Pb levels and hyperlipidemia. Results: In the multivariable logistic regression model, high blood Pb levels were significantly associated with hyperlipidemia after adjusting for confounders (OR 1.41; 95%CI: 1.18-1.67). Furthermore, elevated blood Pb levels were associated with an increased risk of hyperlipidemia across the four quartile (Q) groups (Q1: OR 1.00; Q2: OR 1.16 [95%CI: 1.04-1.29]; Q3: OR 1.39 [95%CI: 1.21-1.59]; and Q4: OR 1.33 [95%CI: 1.15-1.54]; P for trend <0.05). Significant moderating effects were found in the subgroup analysis stratified by age, education, hypertension, and diabetes (P < 0.05). In sensitivity analysis, the ORs for hyperlipidemia across the quartiles of blood Pb levels were 1.00, 1.17 (95%CI: 1.05-1.30), 1.42 (95%CI: 1.24-1.62), and 1.38 (95%CI: 1.19-1.60) for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively (P for trend <0.001) after removing adults with arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and the ORs were 1.00, 1.13 (95%CI: 1.01-1.25), 1.38 (95%CI: 1.21-1.56), and 1.32 (95%CI: 1.16-1.52) for Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4, respectively (P for trend <0.001) after including pregnant women. Conclusion: The current study showed a positive association between blood lead levels and hyperlipidemia.

ABSTRACT

Background: Fear of childbirth is a prevalent issue among women, with a wide range of interventions to dispel it. Here we explored a novel and beneficial intervention and one possible influence mechanism of it. Methods: The cross-sectional study recruited 1,053 pregnant women from one tertiary-grade A class hospital between March to August 2021. The questionnaire included demographic characteristics, a self-made musical activities questionnaire, the Positive affect subscale, and the Childbirth Attitudes Questionnaire. We parceled the eight musical activities into three items by item parceling methodology. The associations of musical activities and positive affect with fear of childbirth were evaluated by a structural equation modeling approach. Results: Our analyses demonstrated the effectiveness of musical activities, which was notably correlated with the increase in positive affect (ß = 0.309, P < 0.01). On the contrary, positive affect predicted a decrease in fear of childbirth (ß = -0.085, P = 0.019). Additionally, positive affect mediated the effect of musical activities on fear of childbirth (ß = -0.026, P = 0.030). However, the direct effect of musical activities on fear of childbirth was not found (ß = 0.029, P = 0.514). Conclusions: Relying on musical activities alone may not be adequate to alleviate the fear of childbirth, and positive affect played a pivotal role between musical activities and fear of childbirth. The results showed that musical activities would be an effective non-pharmaceutical way to alleviate the fear of childbirth and positive affect can not be ignorant in future childbirth fear reduction programs.

ABSTRACT

Background: Causal research concerning the consumption of tea and the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is limited. This study identified the potential causal effects of tea intake on CKD, the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and albuminuria. Methods: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) from UK Biobank were able to identify single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with an extra cup of tea each day. The summary statistics for the kidney function from the CKDGen consortium include 11,765 participants (12,385 cases of CKD) and 54,116 participants for the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio who were mostly of European descent. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to test the relationship between the selected SNPs and the risk of CKD. Results: A total of 2,672 SNPs associated with tea consumption (p < 5 × 10-8) were found, 45 of which were independent and usable in CKDGen. Drinking more cups of tea per day indicates a protective effect for CKD G3-G5 [odds ratio (OR) = 0.803; p = 0.004] and increases eGFR (ß = 0.019 log ml/min/1.73 m2 per cup per day; p = 2.21 × 10-5). Excluding two SNPs responsible for directional heterogeneity (Cochran Q p = 0.02), a high consumption of tea was also negatively correlated with a lower risk of albuminuria (OR = 0.758; p = 0.002). Conclusion: From the perspective of genes, causal relationships exist between daily extra cup of tea and the reduced risk of CKD and albuminuria and increased eGFR.

ABSTRACT

Background: Promoting wound healing is crucial to restore the vital barrier function of injured skin. Growth factor products including epidermal growth factor (EGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) have been used for decades although no systematic evaluation exists regarding their effectiveness and safety issues in treating acute skin wounds. This has resulted in a lack of guidelines and standards for proper application regimes. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to critically evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these growth factors on skin acute wounds and provide guidelines for application regimes. Methods: We searched PubMed/Medline (1980-2020), Cochrane Library (1980-2020), Cochrane CENTRAL (from establishment to 2020), ClinicalTrials.gov (from establishment to 2020), Chinese Journal Full-text Database (CNKI, 1994-2020), China Biology Medicine disc (CBM, 1978-2019), Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP, 1989-2020) and Wanfang Database (WFDATA, 1980-2019). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), quasi-RCTs and controlled clinical trials treating patients with acute skin wounds from various causes and with those available growth factors were included. Results: A total of 7573 papers were identified through database searching; 229 papers including 281 studies were kept after final screening. Administering growth factors significantly shortened the healing time of acute skin wounds, including superficial burn injuries [mean difference (MD) = -3.02; 95% confidence interval (CI):-3.31 ~ -2.74; p < 0.00001], deep burn injuries (MD = -5.63; 95% CI:-7.10 ~ -4.17; p < 0.00001), traumata and surgical wounds (MD = -4.50; 95% CI:-5.55 ~ -3.44; p < 0.00001). Growth factors increased the healing rate of acute skin wounds and decreased scar scores. The incidence of adverse reactions was lower in the growth factor treatment group than in the non-growth factor group. Conclusions: The studied growth factors not only are effective and safe for managing acute skin wounds, but also accelerate their healing with no severe adverse reactions.

BACKGROUND: The novel coronavirus pneumonia that began to spread in 2019 is still raging and has placed a burden on medical systems and governments in various countries. For policymaking and medical resource decisions, a good prediction model is necessary to monitor and evaluate the trends of the epidemic. We used a long short-term memory (LSTM) model and the improved hybrid model based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) to predict COVID-19 trends; Methods: The data were collected from the Harvard Dataverse. Epidemic data from 21 January 2020 to 25 April 2021 for California, the most severely affected state in the United States, were used to develop an LSTM model and an EEMD-LSTM hybrid model, which is an LSTM model combined with ensemble empirical mode decomposition. In this study, ninety percent of the data were adopted to fit the models as a training set, while the subsequent 10% were used to test the prediction effect of the models. The mean absolute percentage error, mean absolute error, and root mean square error were used to evaluate the prediction performances of the models; Results: The results indicated that the number of confirmed cases in California was increasing as of 25 April 2021, with no obvious evidence of a sharp decline. On 25 April 2021, the LSTM model predicted 3666418 confirmed cases, whereas the EEMD-LSTM predicted 3681150. The mean absolute percentage errors for the LSTM and EEMD-LSTM models were 0.0151 and 0.0051, respectively. The mean absolute and root mean square errors were 5.58 × 104 and 5.63 × 104 for the LSTM model and 1.9 × 104 and 2.43 × 104 for the EEMD-LSTM model, respectively; Conclusions: The results showed the advantage of an EEMD-LSTM model over a single LSTM model, and the established EEMD-LSTM model may be suitable for monitoring and evaluating the epidemic situation and providing quantitative analysis evidence for epidemic prevention and control.

ABSTRACT

Background: The causal association between coffee consumption and the risk of OA is limited. This study was conducted to identify the potential causal effects of coffee consumption on total, knee, hip, and self-reported OA. Methods: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of OA were derived from the UK Biobank, comprising 50,508 participants of European ancestry (10,083 with cases and 40,425 controls), and genetic data for specific diagnosed knee OA (4462 cases and 17,885 controls), hip OA (12,625 cases and 50,898 controls), and self-reported OA (12,658 cases and 50,898 controls). Primary and secondary genetic instruments (11 SNPs and 8 SNPs) were selected as instrumental variants from GWAS among 375,833 and 91,462 participants. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were performed to test the effects of the selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and the OA risk. The causal effects were primarily estimated using weighted median and inverse-variance weighted method with several sensitivity analyses. Results: The MR analyses suggested that genetically predicted 1% increase of coffee consumption was associated with an increased risk of overall OA (OR:1.009, 95% CI:1.003-1.016), knee OA (OR:1.023, 95% CI:1.009-1.038), self-reported OA (OR:1.007, 95% CI:1.003-1.011), but not hip OA (OR: 1.012, 95%CI:0.999-1.024) using primary genetic instruments. Similar results were found when using secondary genetic instruments that genetically predicted coffee consumption (cups/day). Additionally, the sensitivity analyses for leave-one-out methods supported a robust association between exposure traits and OA. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that genetically predicted coffee consumption exerts a causal effect on total, knee, and self-reported OA risk, but not at the hip. Further research is required to unravel the role of coffee consumption in OA prevention.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Associations between serum lipids and their individual components with premenopausal breast cancer risk are unclear. This meta-analysis summarized the literature on serum lipids and premenopausal breast cancer risk to elucidate their relationship. METHODS: Eligible studies were identified by searching the PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases until 31 December 2020. Standardized mean difference (SMD) scores with 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were used to assess the impact of serum lipids on premenopausal breast cancer risk. The I2 statistic was calculated to measure the percentage of heterogeneity, and Egger's test was performed to measure publication bias. RESULTS: Thirteen studies were included. The SMD scores of triglycerides (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were 12.90 (95%CI: 7.19-18.61) and 31.43 (95%CI: 8.72-54.15), respectively. The SMD scores of total cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were not significantly different between the groups. The included studies were highly heterogeneous. There were no publication biases found in TC, LDL-C, or HDL-C analyses, whereas publication bias was present in the TG analysis. CONCLUSIONS: TG and LDL-C were higher in premenopausal breast cancer patients than in women without breast cancer. However, no significant differences were found in TC or HDL-C levels.
