ABSTRACT

Habitual daytime napping is a common behavioral and lifestyle practice in particular countries and is often considered part of a normal daily routine. However, recent evidence suggests that the health effects of habitual daytime napping are controversial. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases from inception to March 9, 2024, to synthesize cohort studies of napping and health outcome risk. A total of 44 cohort studies with 1,864,274 subjects aged 20-86 years (mean age 56.4 years) were included. Overall, habitual napping increased the risk of several adverse health outcomes, including all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, metabolic disease, and cancer, and decreased the risk of cognitive impairment and sarcopenia. Individuals with a napping duration of 30 min or longer exhibited a higher risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disease, whereas those with napping durations less than 30 min had no significant risks. No significant differences in napping and health risks were observed for napping frequency, percentage of nappers, sample size, sex, age, body mass index, follow-up years, or comorbidity status. These findings indicate that individuals with a long napping duration should consider shortening their daily nap duration to 30 min or less.

ABSTRACT

The concept of a healthy lifestyle is receiving increasing attention. This study sought to identify an optimal healthy lifestyle profile associated with sleep health in general population of China. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted from June to July 2022. Six healthy lifestyle factors were assessed: healthy diet, regular physical exercise, never smoking, never drinking alcohol, low sedentary behavior, and normal weight. Participants were categorized into the healthy lifestyle (5-6 factors), average (3-4 factors), and unhealthy lifestyle groups (0-2 factors). The study's primary outcome was sleep health, which included sleep quality, duration, pattern, and the presence of any sleep disorder or disturbance, including insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, obstructive apnea syndrome, and narcolepsy. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to explore lifestyles associated with the selected sleep health outcomes. 41,061 individuals were included, forming 18.8% healthy, 63.8% average, and 17.4% unhealthy lifestyle groups. After adjusting for covariates, participants with healthy lifestyle were associated with a higher likelihood of good sleep quality (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.46-1.68), normal sleep duration (OR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.49-1.72), healthy sleep pattern (OR = 2.15, 95% CI = 2.00-2.31), and lower risks of insomnia (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.61-0.71), excessive daytime sleepiness (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.60-0.73), and obstructive apnea syndrome (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.37-0.43), but not narcolepsy (OR = 0.92, 95% CI = 0.83-1.03), compared to those with unhealthy lifestyle. This large cross-sectional study is the first to our knowledge to quantify the associations of a healthy lifestyle with specific aspects of sleep health. The findings offer support for efforts to improve sleep health by modulating lifestyle.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of the Qingre Lishi decoction in treating of newly diagnosed overweight and obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from an evidence-based medical perspective. Methods: 70 cases of overweight and obese patients with newly diagnosed T2DM treated in the outpatient clinic of the Department of Endocrinology of the Affiliated Hospital of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine from December 2021 to November 2022 were selected, of which 35 cases were in the observation group and 35 cases were in the control group. The observation group was treated with the Qingre Lishi decoction add lifestyle intervention, and the control group was treated with lifestyle intervention only. We compared and analyzed the fasting blood glucose (FPG), 2-hour postprandial glucose (2hPG), the occurrence of adverse reactions, and the related indexes provided by wearing the CGM device during the observation period of the patients in the two groups. Results: 53 participants completed the clinical trial. In relation of glycemic control, a decreasing trend has shown in both groups, with the decreases in FPG, 2hPG, eHbA1c, and MG in the observation group being higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). In regard to blood glucose attainment, at the 28d, the attainment rate of patients in the observation group with TIR>80% was 87.10%, and the magnitude of changes in the rise of TIR and the fall of TAR was significantly better than that in the control group (P<0.01). In terms of blood glucose fluctuation, CV and SD of the patients in the observation group decreased compared with the 0d; the magnitude of daytime blood glucose fluctuation was significantly alleviated compared with that of the control group. The degree of decrease in LAGE, MAGE, and MODD was significantly lower than that of the control group (P<0.01). Conclusion: The Qingre Lishi decoction can effectively improve the hyperglycemic condition of overweight and obese patients with newly diagnosed T2DM. It can reduce blood glucose, alleviate blood glucose fluctuations, reduce the incidence of hypoglycemia, and improve patients' adherence and self-confidence in controlling blood glucose. ABSTRACT

Aerospace breeding is a breeding technique that utilizes a spacecraft to position plants in a space environment for mutagenesis, which is conducive to rapid mutagenesis for the screening of superior plant varieties. In this study, tea trees with aviation mutagenesis (TM) and those without aviation mutagenesis (CK) were selected as research subjects to analyze the effects of aviation mutagenesis on the growth, physiological properties, and hormone metabolism of tea trees, and to further screen the characteristic hormones and validate their functions. The results showed that the leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area of TM tea trees were significantly larger than those of CK. The growth indexes, the photosynthetic physiological indexes (i.e., chlorophyll content, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and photosynthetic rate), and the resistance physiological indexes (i.e., superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and soluble sugar) were significantly higher in TM than in CK. Hormone metabolome analysis showed that four characteristic hormones distinguished CK from TM, namely, l-tryptophan, indole, salicylic acid, and salicylic acid 2-O-ß-glucoside, all of which were significantly more abundant in TM than in CK. These four characteristic hormones were significantly and positively correlated with the growth indexes, tea yield, and the photosynthetic and resistance physiological indexes of tea trees. The leaf area, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, and superoxide dismutase activity of tea tree seedlings after spraying with the four characteristic hormones were significantly increased, in which salicylic acid and salicylic acid 2-O-ß-glucoside were more favorable to increase the leaf area and superoxide dismutase activity, while l-tryptophan and indole were more favorable to increase the leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate. It can be observed that aviation mutagenesis improves the accumulation of the characteristic hormones of tea trees, enhances their photosynthetic capacity, improves their resistance, promotes their growth, and then improves the tea yield.

ABSTRACT

It is generally recognized that the quality differences in plant germplasm resources are genetically determined, and that only a good "pedigree" can have good quality. Ecological memory of plants and rhizosphere soil fungi provides a new perspective to understand this phenomenon. Here, we selected 45 tea tree germplasm resources and analyzed the rhizosphere soil fungi, nutrient content and tea quality. We found that the ecological memory of tea trees for soil fungi led to the recruitment and aggregation of dominant fungal populations that were similar across tea tree varieties, differing only in the number of fungi. We performed continuous simulation and validation to identify four characteristic fungal genera that determined the quality differences. Further analysis showed that the greater the recruitment and aggregation of Saitozyma and Archaeorhizomyces by tea trees, the greater the rejection of Chaetomium and Trechispora, the higher the available nutrient content in the soil and the better the tea quality. In summary, our study presents a new perspective, showing that ecological memory between tea trees and rhizosphere soil fungi leads to differences in plants' ability to recruit and aggregate characteristic fungi, which is one of the most important determinants of tea quality. The artificial inoculation of rhizosphere fungi may reconstruct the ecological memory of tea trees and substantially improve their quality.

ABSTRACT

Background: Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a rare autoimmune myopathy whose main clinical manifestations include a characteristic rash, symmetrical proximal muscle weakness, and elevated muscle enzymes. While approximately one-third of adult patients with dermatomyositis (DM) develop malignancies, typically within a year of diagnosis, this phenomenon is not commonly observed in patients with JDM. In this study, we present a rare case of both JDM and Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) diagnosed in an adolescent female patient. Case description: A 14-year-old girl with proximal muscle weakness and myalgia for 8 weeks was admitted to the hospital and ultimately received a diagnosis of DM. A thorough physical examination revealed enlarged lymph nodes on both sides of the cervical, and a lymph node biopsy was performed to diagnose HL. After she underwent radiotherapy and chemotherapy, her symptoms of both HL and DM were alleviated. Conclusion: The phenomenon of JDM as a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with HL is very rare. Thus, routine cancer screening for DM in adolescents is currently not recommended. The diagnosis of JDM requires a detailed physical examination, and further tumor screening is necessary for patients with unusual physical findings, such as atypical rashes, enlarged lymph nodes, and enlargement of the spleen and/or liver. Even if no malignancy is detected when JDM is diagnosed, long-term follow-up is necessary.

ABSTRACT

Exotic quantum states arise from the interplay of various degrees of freedom such as charge, spin, orbital, and lattice. Recently, a short-ranged charge order (CO) was discovered deep inside the antiferromagnetic phase of Kagome magnet FeGe, exhibiting close relationships with magnetism. Despite extensive investigations, the CO mechanism remains controversial, mainly because the short-ranged behavior hinders precise identification of CO superstructure. Here, combining multiple experimental techniques, we report the observation of a long-ranged CO in high-quality FeGe samples, which is accompanied with a first-order structural transition. With these high-quality samples, the distorted 2 × 2 × 2 CO superstructure is characterized by a strong dimerization along the c-axis of 1/4 of Ge1-sites in Fe3Ge layers, and in response to that, the 2 × 2 in-plane charge modulations are induced. Moreover, we show that the previously reported short-ranged CO might be related to large occupational disorders at Ge1-site, which upsets the equilibrium of the CO state and the ideal 1 × 1 × 1 structure with very close energies, inducing nanoscale coexistence of these two phases. Our study provides important clues for further understanding the CO properties in FeGe and helps to identify the CO mechanism.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to explore the risk factors of postoperative airway complications in children with oral floor mass. The first choice of auxiliary examination method for children with oral floor mass is also proposed. This retrospective study included 50 children with floor-of-mouth (FOM) masses. Medical records were reviewed, and information on age of onset, functional impacts present, age at consultation, imaging findings, history of preoperative aspiration, pathology findings, properties of biopsied fluid, treatment modality, postoperative outcomes, and operation were recorded. A total of 20 patients exhibited functional impacts such as difficulty in breathing and feeding. Ultrasound examination was performed in 28 cases; and magnetic resonance imaging, in 38 cases. The diagnosis was lymphatic malformation in 12 cases, developmental cyst in 29 cases, and solid mass in 7 cases. There were 28 cases of surgical resection, 9 cases underwent multiple puncture volume reduction followed by surgery, 11 cases treated using sclerotherapy injection, and 1 case treated using sclerotherapy injection and surgical resection. Young age, functional impact, and high grade of lymphatic duct malformation increased the risk of surgical treatment. B-scan ultrasound is the first choice for the diagnosis of FOM masses in children.

ABSTRACT

Extracting moso bamboo parameters from single-source point cloud data has limitations. In this article, a new approach for extracting moso bamboo parameters using airborne laser scanning (ALS) and terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) point cloud data is proposed. Using the field-surveyed coordinates of plot corner points and the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm, the ALS and TLS point clouds were aligned. Considering the difference in point distribution of ALS, TLS, and the merged point cloud, individual bamboo plants were segmented from the ALS point cloud using the point cloud segmentation (PCS) algorithm, and individual bamboo plants were segmented from the TLS and the merged point cloud using the comparative shortest-path (CSP) method. The cylinder fitting method was used to estimate the diameter at breast height (DBH) of the segmented bamboo plants. The accuracy was calculated by comparing the bamboo parameter values extracted by the above methods with reference data in three sample plots. The comparison results showed that by using the merged data, the detection rate of moso bamboo plants could reach up to 97.30%; the R2 of the estimated bamboo height was increased to above 0.96, and the root mean square error (RMSE) decreased from 1.14 m at most to a range of 0.35-0.48 m, while the R2 of the DBH fit was increased to a range of 0.97-0.99, and the RMSE decreased from 0.004 m at most to a range of 0.001-0.003 m. The accuracy of moso bamboo parameter extraction was significantly improved by using the merged point cloud data.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we investigated the status and influencing factors of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A questionnaire on COVID-19 vaccination in patients with COPD was developed. The clinical characteristics, COVID-19 vaccination status, other relevant vaccinations, and vaccination status of the patients with COPD were collected anonymously. Logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the factors influencing COVID-19 vaccination in patients with COPD. There were 1898 returned questionnaires, of which 1874 were valid. The proportion of patients who completed the COVID-19 vaccination program was 78.60%. Factors influencing the COVID-19 vaccination rate were: the age of individuals who were 75-85 years old and > 85 years old, acute exacerbation 3-4 times in the previous year, comorbid cardiovascular and endocrine system diseases, failure to take regular medication for COPD, application of non-invasive ventilation machines, believing that their current health condition has deteriorated, believing that the current COVID-19 vaccine is not safe, medical staff not specifying whether they would recommend vaccination against COVID-19, medical staff not recommending the COVID-19 vaccine, and fear of adverse reactions and aggravation of COPD. Patients with COPD had a high COVID-19 vaccination rate in China, whereas patients with pneumonia, influenza, and herpes zoster had a low vaccination rate. Improving the patients' understanding of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccine and promoting effective communication between medical staff and patients would help increase the vaccination rate of patients with COPD.

ABSTRACT

An electrochemical and selective decarboxylation and dehydration using α-keto acids with amines is accomplished, which leads to the easy accessibility of amides and α-ketoamides, which are not only ubiquitous and valuable structure motifs found in pharmaceuticals, but also versatile building blocks in synthetic chemistry. Notably, for this efficient and green protocol, neither metal catalysts nor external oxidants are required. The process exhibits a broad scope and functional group tolerance to deliver various amides and α-ketoamides. Moreover, these two reactions have also been applied to late-stage derivatization and can be safely conducted on gram scale.

ABSTRACT

There are obvious differences in quality between different varieties of the same plant, and it is not clear whether they can be effectively distinguished from each other from a bacterial point of view. In this study, 44 tea tree varieties (Camellia sinensis) were used to analyze the rhizosphere soil bacterial community using high-throughput sequencing technology, and five types of machine deep learning were used for modeling to obtain characteristic microorganisms that can effectively differentiate different varieties, and validation was performed. The relationship between characteristic microorganisms, soil nutrient transformation, and tea quality formation was further analyzed. It was found that 44 tea tree varieties were classified into two groups (group A and group B) and the characteristic bacteria that distinguished them came from 23 genera. Secondly, the content of rhizosphere soil available nutrients (available nitrogen, available phosphorus, and available potassium) and tea quality indexes (tea polyphenols, theanine, and caffeine) was significantly higher in group A than in group B. The classification result based on both was consistent with the above bacteria. This study provides a new insight and research methodology into the main reasons for the formation of quality differences among different varieties of the same plant.

ABSTRACT

The non-thermal and thermal effects on aroma of sea buckthorn juice have rarely been investigated. In this study, 57 odor compounds were identified in fresh sea buckthorn juice (FSBJ), high pressure processing sea buckthorn juice (HSBJ), and pasteurized sea buckthorn juice (PSBJ), including 29 esters, 8 aldehydes, 1 ketone, 5 alcohols, 5 acids, 6 terpenoids, and 3 others. Ethyl 2-methylbutanoate, ethyl 3-methylbutanoate, ethyl hexanoate, and ethyl 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutanoate with flavor dilution factors ranging from 729 to 59,049 contributed to the fruity odors of FSBJ and HSBJ. Besides, the formation of off-odor compounds including hexanal, nonanal, furfural, 3-methylbutanoic acid, and dimethyl disulfide with odor activity values ≥ 1, imparts fatty, roasted, sweaty, and cooked odor in PSBJ. The variations of vitamin C and reducing sugar are significantly associated with changes in odor-active compounds during pasteurized processing. These findings provide new insights that high pressure processing minimizes the adverse effects of pasteurization.

ABSTRACT

Aviation mutagenesis is a breeding method for the rapid selection of superior plant varieties. In this study, rhizosphere soil chemical indexes, soil enzyme activities, and soil metabolites were measured in Dahongpao tea trees with aviation mutagenesis (TM) and without aviation mutagenesis (CK). The main soil metabolites distinguishing TM and CK and their relationships with soil chemical indexes and soil enzyme activities were analyzed and obtained. The results showed that there was no significant change in the rhizosphere soils' pH of TM tea trees compared to CK (p = 0.91), while all other chemical indexes of TM were significantly higher than CK (p < 0.05). In addition, the activities of enzymes related to soil nutrient cycling such as urease, protease, sucrase, acid phosphatase and cellulase, and enzymes related to soil antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase were significantly increased (p < 0.05) in the rhizosphere soils of TM tea trees compared to CK. Soil metabolite analysis showed that the main soil metabolites distinguishing CK from TM were carbohydrates, nitrogen compounds, and amines. Of these, carbohydrates and nitrogen compounds were significantly positively correlated with soil chemical indexes and soil enzymes, whereas amine was significantly negatively correlated with soil chemical indexes such as organic matter, total nitrogen, total potassium, available nitrogen, available phosphorus; amine showed significant negative correlation with soil enzymes such as catalase, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and urease. It can be seen that aviation mutagenesis is conducive to improving the ability of tea tree rhizosphere aggregation and transformation of soil nutrients, increasing the total amount of soil nutrients and the content of available nutrients, which is more conducive to promoting the uptake of nutrients by the tea tree, and thus promoting the growth of the tea tree.

The quality of the Dahongpao mother tree (Camellia sinensis) remains a mystery to this day. In this study, for the first time, the differences between the Dahongpao mother tree (MD) and Dahongpao cuttings (PD), in terms of odor characteristics and taste characteristics were analyzed by metabomics. The results showed that MD had stronger floral, fruity, green, and woody odor characteristics than PD, and that the contributions were mainly from dihydromyrcenol, methyl salicylate, 2-isobutylpyrazine, 1,6-dihydrocarveol, gamma-terpineol, and linalyl acetate. Further, fresh and brisk taste and mellowness taste characteristics of MD were significantly higher than PD, with contributions mainly from amino acids and derivatives and organic acids. Secondly, bitterness taste characteristics of PD were significantly higher than MD, with contributions from phenolic acids, flavones, and flavonols. This study preliminarily unraveled the legend of the superior quality of the Dahongpao mother tree, and also provided an important reference for the breeding of tea-tree cuttings.

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the synthesis of mesophase pitch using low-cost fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) slurry and waste fluid asphaltene (WFA) as raw materials through the co-carbonization method. The resulting mesophase pitch product and its formation mechanism were thoroughly analyzed. Various characterization techniques, including polarizing microscopy, softening point measurement, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were employed to characterize and analyze the properties and structure of the mesophase pitch. The experimental results demonstrate that the optimal optical texture of the mesophase product is achieved under specific reaction conditions, including a temperature of 420 °C, pressure of 1 MPa, reaction time of 6 h, and the addition of 2% asphaltene. It was observed that a small amount of asphaltene contributes to the formation of mesophase pitch spheres, facilitating the development of the mesophase. However, excessive content of asphaltene may cover the surface of the mesophase spheres, impeding the contact between them and consequently compromising the optical texture of the mesophase pitch product. Furthermore, the inclusion of asphaltene promotes polymerization reactions in the system, leading to an increase in the average molecular weight of the mesophase pitch. Notably, when the amount of asphaltene added is 2%, the mesophase pitch demonstrates the lowest ID/IG value, indicating superior molecular orientation and larger graphite-like microcrystals. Additionally, researchers found that at this asphaltene concentration, the mesophase pitch exhibits the highest degree of order, as evidenced by the maximum diffraction angle (2θ) and stacking height (Lc) values, and the minimum d002 value. Moreover, the addition of asphaltene enhances the yield and aromaticity of the mesophase pitch and significantly improves the thermal stability of the resulting product.

Medical image fusion can provide doctors with more detailed data and thus improve the accuracy of disease diagnosis. In recent years, deep learning has been widely used in the field of medical image fusion. The traditional method of medical image fusion is to operate by superimposing and other methods of pixels. The introduction of deep learning methods has improved the effectiveness of medical image fusion. However, these methods still have problems such as edge blurring and information redundancy. In this paper, we propose a deep learning network model based on Transformer and an improved DenseNet network module integration that can be applied to medical images and solve the above problems. At the same time, the method can be moved to natural images. The use of Transformer and dense concatenation enhances the feature extraction capability of the method by limiting the feature loss which reduces the risk of edge blurring. We compared several representative traditional methods and more advanced deep learning methods with this method. The experimental results show that the Transformer and the improved DenseNet network module have a strong capability of feature extraction. The method yields good results both in terms of visual quality and objective image evaluation metrics.

ABSTRACT

Aviation mutagenesis is a fast and efficient breeding method. In this study, we analyzed the effect of aviation mutagenesis on volatile compounds and odor characteristics in Dahongpao fresh leaves and gross tea for the first time. The results showed that aviation mutagenesis significantly increased the total volatile compounds of Dahongpao fresh leaves and gross tea. Aviation mutagenesis most critically significantly increased the content of beta-myrcene in Dahongpao fresh leaves, prompting its conversion to beta-pinene, cubebol, beta-phellandrene, zingiberene, (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienal, and 6-pentyloxan-2-one after processing, which in turn enhanced the fruity, green, spicy, and woody odor characteristics of the gross tea. This study provided a reference for further exploration of aviation mutagenic breeding of Camellia sinensis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) can remodel tumor microenvironment by secreting exosomes. This study aimed to investigate the role of exosomes derived from cancer-associated fibroblasts in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. METHODS: Circular RNA (circRNA) array was used to identify differentially expressed circRNAs in exosomes from normal fibroblasts (NFs) and CAFs, and confirmed one differentially expressed circRNA circ_0067557 by real-time PCR. The effect of circ_0067557 on proliferation, metastasis, chemoresistance and apoptosis was verified by wound heal, tranwell, CCK8, sphere-forming and flow cytometry assay. RESULTS: Circ_0067557 expression in exosomes from CAFs was higher than those from NFs. CAF-derived exosomes promoted the proliferation, migration, invasion and chemoresistance of CRC cells while suppressed apoptosis. Silencing of circ_0067557 inhibited malignant phenotypes of CRC cells by targeting Lin28A and Lin28B. Moreover, CAF-derived exosomes enhanced the growth of CRC xenograft tumors. CONCLUSION: Circ_0067557/Lin28A and Lin28B signal axis may be a potential therapy target for CRC.

ABSTRACT

To estimate the safety and effectiveness of endoscopic nasal dacryocystorhinostomy in the remedy of chronic dacryocystitis. The clinical data of 105 subjects with chronic dacryocystitis enrolled into our hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The subjects were distinguished into nasal endoscopic group (endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy; i.e., 51 cases) according to their surgical methods and external-route group (external-route dacryocystorhinostomy; i.e., 54 cases). The therapeutic effect, lacrimal gland secretion function, tear film stability, degree of epiphora, lacrimal passage patency, complications, and recurrence rate were contrasted between the 2 groups. The nasal endoscopic group exhibited a higher effective remedy rate (98.04%) compared with the external-route group (83.33%). Three months postoperation, both groups showed improvements in lacrimal gland secretion function and tear film stability, with the nasal endoscopic group demonstrating more significant enhancement in lacrimal gland secretion function than the external-route group. Six months postoperation, a reduction in the degree of epiphora was observed in both groups, with the nasal endoscopic group displaying a more pronounced decrease in epiphora severity and a higher lacrimal passage patency rate than the external-route group. Furthermore, the nasal endoscopic group experienced lower incidences of postoperative complications and recurrence rates. Endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy is safe and effective in the remedy of chronic dacryocystitis.
