ABSTRACT

Antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) are both laboratory evidence and causative factors for a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), with thrombotic and obstetric events being the most prevalent. Despite the aPL-triggered vasculopathy nature of APS, vasculitic-like manifestations rarely exist in APS and mainly appear associated with other concurrent connective tissue diseases like systemic lupus erythematous. Several studies have characterized pulmonary capillaritis related to pathogenic aPL, suggesting vasculitis as a potential associated non-thrombotic manifestation. Here, we describe a 15-year-old girl who develops hepatic infarction in the presence of highly positive aPL, temporally related to prior non-severe COVID-19 infection. aPL-related hepatic vasculitis, which has not been reported before, contributes to liver ischemic necrosis. Immunosuppression therapy brings about favorable outcomes. Our case together with retrieved literature provides supportive evidence for aPL-related vasculitis, extending the spectrum of vascular changes raised by pathogenic aPL. Differentiation between thrombotic and vasculitic forms of vascular lesions is essential for appropriate therapeutic decision to include additional immunosuppression therapy. We also perform a systematic review to characterize the prevalence and clinical features of new-onset APS and APS relapses after COVID-19 for the first time, indicating the pathogenicity of aPL in a subset of COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

In the late stage of underground brine mining in salt lakes, the method of injecting fresh water is often used to extract the salt from the brine storage medium. This method of freshwater displacement breaks the original water-rock equilibrium and changes the evolution process of the original underground brine. To explore the mechanism of salt release in saline water-bearing media under conditions of relatively fresh lake water dissolution, this paper analyzes the changes in the chemical parameters of brine from 168 sampling points in the Mahai salt lake in the Qaidam Basin at three stages (before exploitation, during exploitation, and late exploitation) by correlation analysis, ion ratio analysis, and other methods and investigate the variations in porosity and the evolution laws of brine. The results show that the changes in the main ion content and brine mineralization during the exploitation process are small. The changes in Ca2+ content are significant due to the low solubility of calcium minerals, the precipitation of gypsum during the mixing process, and the adsorption of cations by alternating with Ca2+. Primary intergranular pore skeletons are easily corroded to form secondary pores, which increase the geological porosity. Na+ and Cl- are the dominant ions in the brine in the study area, but the concentration of Ca2 + decreased significantly under the influence of mining, by 41.7% in the middle period and 24.5% in the late period. The correlation between Ca2+ and salinity changes significantly in different mining stages, and the reason for the decrease of Ca2+ may be due to the influence of mineral dissolution, mixing, and anion-cation exchange. The porosity of the layer in the study area showed the opposite trend of Ca2+, and the porosity increased first and then decreased. The innovation of this paper lies in analyzing the reasons and mechanisms of the disturbance of artificial dissolution mining on stratum structure by comparing the hydrochemical characteristics and porosity of underground brine storage media in three different mining stages. The research in this paper provides a theoretical basis for the calculation of brine resource reserves and the sustainable development of underground brine in salt lake areas.

ABSTRACT

Iron sulfides have shown great potential as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high sodium storage capacity and low cost. Nevertheless, iron sulfides generally exhibit unsatisfied electrochemical performance induced by sluggish electron/ion transfer and severe pulverization upon the sodiation/desodiation process. Herein, we constructed a yolk-shell FeS@NC nanosphere with an N-doped carbon shell and FeS particle core via a simple hydrothermal method, followed by in-situ polymerization and vulcanization. The FeS particles intimately coupled with N-doped carbon can accelerate the electron transfer, avoid severe volume expansion, and maintain structural stability upon repeated sodiation/desodiation process. Furthermore, the small particle size of FeS can shorten ion-diffusion distance and facilitate ion transportation. Therefore, the FeS@NC nanosphere shows excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability that it can deliver a high capacity of 520.1 mAh g-1 over 800 cycles at 2.0 A g-1 and a remarkable capacity of 625.9 mAh g-1 at 10.0 A g-1.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) is rising rapidly worldwide. However, there are few reports on these heterogeneous diseases in China. Our study aimed to explore the epidemiological characteristics of NENs in Beijing. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using population-based cancer surveillance data in Beijing, China. All data were extracted from the Beijing Cancer Registry with incidence dates from 1 January 1998 to 31 December 2018; the follow-up period was through 31 December 2021. Segi's world standard population was used to estimate the age-standardized rate. Survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. RESULTS: From 1998 to 2018, the incidence of NENs in Beijing initially showed a significant increasing trend, from 1.07/100,000 to 3.53/100,000; this began to plateau after 2013. The age-specific incidence rate increased with age and peaked in the age group 70-74 years. The incidence in men was significantly higher than that in women (4.41/100,000 vs. 1.69/100,000). The most common sites of NENs were the lung (2.38/100,000) and rectum (0.14/100,000). Most NENs were diagnosed at a late stage. We found that NENs originating from the lung had worse overall survival than extrapulmonary NENs, and male patients had worse survival than female patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study retrospectively analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of NENs in Beijing from 1998 to 2018. Our findings provide a reference regarding the epidemiological statistics of NENs in Beijing to contribute to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of these specific tumors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a disease demonstrating increasing morbidity and mortality, especially in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. Studies have shown that aspirin can reduce the incidence of liver cancer; however, the degree of benefit in patients with viral hepatitis is unclear. This study focused on the association between aspirin use and HCC risk in patients with chronic viral hepatitis. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases was performed from the earliest available date to December 16, 2023. The primary outcome was HCC incidence, and the secondary outcome was gastrointestinal bleeding. The results were expressed as hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Meta-analyses were performed by using random or fixed-effects models based on the heterogeneity assessed via the I2 statistic. RESULTS: A total of 13 articles (303,414 participants and 14,423 HCC patients) were included in the analysis. The incidence of HCC in aspirin users was lower than that in non-aspirin users (HR 0.75; 95% CI, 0.68-0.83; P < 0.001; I2 = 90.0%). Subgroup analysis further showed that this effect may be more obvious in HCV patients, non-cirrhotic patients, patients with statins, and long-term aspirin users, but it may have the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding (HR 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.20; P = 0.906; I2 = 0.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Our meta-analysis shows that in patients with chronic viral hepatitis, aspirin use is associated with a significantly reduced risk of liver cancer, but attention should be paid to the possible risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, and this conclusion needs further validation in the future.

ABSTRACT

Hepatic myelopathy (HM) is a rare neurological complication in the end stage of many liver diseases and is characterized by bilateral spastic paraparesis without sensory and sphincter dysfunction. It occurs owing to metabolic disorders and central nervous system dysfunction associated with cirrhosis. Without timely and effective clinical intervention, the prognosis of these patients is devastating. Although liver transplantation (LT) is an effective treatment for HM, the prognosis of these patients remains unsatisfactory. Early recognition and diagnosis of this disease are essential for improving patient prognosis. Here, we report a case of hepatitis B virus-associated decompensated cirrhosis with HM. The patient recovered well after LT. We also summarize the clinical characteristics and post-transplant outcomes of 25 patients with HM treated by LT through 2023, including this case.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This retrospective study aimed to investigate whether the repair of medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMPRTs) is effective for improving clinical outcomes and return to sports rates in young patients (50 years old or younger) with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and MMPRTs. METHODS: Between 2016 and 2019, 153 patients with KOA and MMPRTs who underwent open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) were retrospectively included. The patients were divided into OWHTO combined with MMPRT repair (n = 73) and isolated OWHTO (n = 80) groups. Lysholm scores, Hospital for Special Surgery (HHS) scores, Tegner scores, flexion contracture, range of knee flexion, return to sports rates and postoperative complications were compared. Radiological outcomes, including hip-knee-ankle angle (HKA), medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), joint line convergence angle (JLCA) and Kellgren-Lawrence (K-L) grade, were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 30.1 ± 3.0 months, the OWHTO + Repair group observed better clinical outcomes compared with the OWHTO group (Lysholm score: 86.7 ± 7.4 vs. 81.6 ± 6.9, p = 0.023. HHS score: 85.4 ± 8.20 vs. 80.5 ± 7.1, p = 0.039). The OWHTO + Repair group had higher Tegner scores and return to sports rates than the OWHTO group (Tegner score: 6 vs. 5, p = 0.020; return to sports rates: 38% vs. 15%, p = 0.001). No fracture or major complications occurred. Radiological outcomes showed no significant differences between the two groups (HKA: 181.1 ± 2.7 vs. 180.1 ± 1.5 n.s; MPTA: 90.1 ± 1.8 vs. 89.2 ± 1.4, n.s; JLCA:1.9 ± 0.7 vs. 2.1 ± 0.7, n.s). CONCLUSIONS: Additional MMPRT repair during OWHTO was associated with better clinical outcomes and higher rates of return to sports in young patients with medial compartment KOA and MMPRTs. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level III.

ABSTRACT

Researchers are interested in single-atom catalysts with atomically scattered metals relishing the enhanced electrocatalytic activity for nitrogen reduction and 100 % metal atom utilization. In this paper, we investigated 18 transition metals (TM) spanning 3d to 5d series as efficient nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) catalysts on defective 2D SiPV layered structures through first-principles calculation. A systematic screening identified Mo@SiPV, Nb@SiPV, Ta@SiPV and W@SiPV as superior, demonstrating enhanced ammonia synthesis with significantly lower limiting potentials (-0.25, -0.45, -0.49 and -0.15 V, respectively), compared to the benchmark -0.87 eV for the defective SiP. In addition, the descriptor ΔG*N was introduced to establish the relationship between the different NRR intermediates, and the volcano plot of the limiting potentials were determined for their potential-determining steps (PDS). Remarkably, the limiting voltage of the NRR possesses a good linear relationship with the active center TM atom Ɛd, which is a reliable descriptor for predicting the limiting voltage. Furthermore, we verified the stability (using Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics - AIMD) and high selectivity (UL(NRR)-UL(HER) > -0.5 V) of these four catalysts in vacuum and solvent environments. This study systematically demonstrates the strong catalytic potential of 2D TM@SiPV(TM = Mo, Nb, Ta, W) single-atom catalysts for nitrogen reduction electrocatalysis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The worldwide human monkeypox (mpox) outbreak in 2022 mainly affected men who have sex with men (MSM). In China, young men who have sex with men (YMSM) were at a potential high risk of mpox infection due to their sexual activeness and the eased COVID-19 restrictions at the end of 2022. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the behavioral intention of receiving mpox vaccination and undergoing mpox testing in 4 different scenarios and explore their associations with background and behavioral theory-related factors among Chinese YMSM. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among YMSM aged 18-29 years from 6 representative provinces of China in September 2022. Participants recruited (recruitment rate=2918/4342, 67.2%) were asked to self-administer an anonymous questionnaire designed based on prior knowledge about mpox and classic health behavior theories. Data on the participants' background, mpox knowledge and cognition, mpox vaccination and testing cognition, and the behavioral intention of receiving mpox vaccination and undergoing mpox testing were collected. Descriptive analysis and univariate and multivariate linear regressions were performed. Geodetector was used to measure the stratified heterogeneity of behavioral intention. RESULTS: A total of 2493 YMSM with a mean age of 24.6 (SD 2.9) years were included. The prevalence of having a behavioral intention of receiving mpox vaccination ranged from 66.2% to 88.4% by scenario, varying in epidemic status and cost. The prevalence of having an mpox testing intention was above 90% in all scenarios regardless of the presence of symptoms and the cost. The positive factors related to vaccination intention included mpox knowledge (ba=0.060, 95% CI 0.016-0.103), perceived susceptibility of mpox (ba=0.091, 95% CI 0.035-0.146), perceived severity of mpox (ba=0.230, 95% CI 0.164-0.296), emotional distress caused by mpox (ba=0.270, 95% CI 0.160-0.380), perceived benefits of mpox vaccination (ba=0.455, 95% CI 0.411-0.498), self-efficacy of mpox vaccination (ba=0.586, 95% CI 0.504-0.668), and having 1 male sex partner (ba=0.452, 95% CI 0.098-0.806), while the negative factor was perceived barriers to vaccination (ba=-0.056, 95% CI -0.090 to -0.022). The positive factors related to testing intention were perceived severity of mpox (ba=0.283, 95% CI 0.241-0.325), perceived benefits of mpox testing (ba=0.679, 95% CI 0.636-0.721), self-efficacy of mpox testing (ba=0.195, 95% CI 0.146-0.245), having 1 male sex partner (ba=0.290, 95% CI 0.070-0.510), and having in-person gatherings with MSM (ba=0.219, 95% CI 0.072-0.366), while the negative factor was emotional distress caused by mpox (ba=-0.069, 95% CI -0.137 to -0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Among Chinese YMSM, the intention of undergoing mpox testing is optimal, while the mpox vaccination intention has room for improvement. A future national response should raise YMSM's mpox knowledge, disseminate updated information about mpox and preventive measures, improve preventive service accessibility and privacy, and provide advice on positively coping with the associated emotional distress.

ABSTRACT

The genes of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway may have potential roles in fat accumulation of Non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), but the effects of their variants in the pathway on ONFH development have been remained unclear. To explore the potential roles of the variants in the development of ONFH, we completed the investigation of the paired interactions as well as their related biological functions of 17 variants of GSK3ß, LRP5, and FRP4 genes etc. in the pathway. The genotyping of the 17 variants were finished by MASS ARRAY PLATFORM in a 560 ONFH case-control system. The association of variants interactions with ONFH risk and clinical traits was evaluated by logistic regression analysis etc. and bioinformatics technology. The results showed that the genotype, allele frequency, and genetic models of Gsk3ß rs334558 (G/A), SFRP4 rs1052981 (A/G), and LRP5 rs312778 (T/C) were significantly associated with the increased and decreased ONFH risk and clinical traits, respectively (P < 0.001-0.0002). Particularly, the paired interactions of six variants as well as eight variants also showed statistically increased and decreased ONFH risk, bilateral hip lesions risk and stage IV risk of ONFH, respectively (P < 0.044-0.004). Our results not only at the first time simultaneously showed exact serum lipid disorder and abnormal platelet function of ONFH in the same study system with the 17 variants polymorphisms of Wnt/ß-catenin pathway but also shed light on the variants closely intervening the lipid disorder and abnormal coagulation of ONFH.

ABSTRACT

With the large number of atypical cases in the mpox outbreak, which was classified as a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 23 July 2022, rapid diagnosis of mpox and diseases with similar symptoms to mpox such as chickenpox and respiratory infectious diseases in the early stages of viral infection is key to controlling the spread of the outbreak. In this study, antibodies against the monkeypox virus A29L protein were efficiently and rapidly identified by combining rapid mRNA immunization with high-throughput sequencing of individual B cells. We obtained eight antibodies with a high affinity for A29L validated by ELISA, which were was used as the basis for developing an ultrasensitive fluorescent immunochromatographic assay based on multilayer quantum dot nanobeads (SiTQD-ICA). The SiTQD-ICA biosensor utilizing M53 and M78 antibodies showed high sensitivity and stability of detection: A29L was detected within 20 min, with a minimum detection limit of 5 pg/mL. A specificity test showed that the method was non-cross-reactive with chickenpox or common respiratory pathogens and can be used for early and rapid diagnosis of monkeypox virus infection by antigen detection. This antibody identification method can also be used for rapid acquisition of monoclonal antibodies in early outbreaks of other infectious diseases for various studies.

ABSTRACT

Metal sulfides (MSs) have attracted much attention as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high sodium storage capacity. However, the unsatisfactory electrochemical performance induced by the huge volume change and sluggish kinetics hampered the practical application of SIBs. Herein, guided by the heterostructure interface engineering, novel multicomponent metal sulfide-based anodes, including SnS, FeS, and Fe3N embedded in N-doped carbon nanosheets (SnS/FeS/Fe3N/NC NSs), have been synthesized for high-performance SIBs. The as-prepared SnS/FeS/Fe3N/NC NSs with abundant heterointerfaces and high conductivity of N-doped carbon nanosheet matrix can shorten the Na+ diffusion path and promote reaction kinetics during the sodiation/desodiation process. Moreover, the presence of Fe3N can promote the reversible conversion of SnS and FeS during the cycling process. As a consequence, when evaluated as anode materials for SIBs, the SnS/FeS/Fe3N/NC NSs can maintain a high sodium storage capacity of 473.6 mAh g-1 after 600 cycles at 2.0 A g-1 and can still provide a high reversible capacity of 537.4 mAh g-1 even at 5.0 A g-1 This discovery offers a novel strategy for constructing metal sulfide-based anode materials for high-performance SIBs.

ABSTRACT

Soil/sediment samples of four different land types were collected from aquaculture land, farmland, industrial land and river bottom sediment in the estuary area of Dagu River. The contents of Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in 0-30 cm inner surface samples were detected, and the distribution characteristics of heavy metal content in surface soil/sediment of different land use types in the estuary area were analyzed. Local accumulation index method, potential risk index evaluation method and principal component analysis method were used to analyze the pollution status and sources of heavy metals. The results showed that the heavy metal accumulation levels in soil and sediment samples in the study area were As > Cd > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cr, and the heavy metal content exceeded the soil background value in Shandong Province, but the potential risks were all in a low risk state. The main sources of Cr, Zn and As are transportation sources and natural sources, while the main sources of Cd and Pb are agricultural.

The 2022 multi-country mpox outbreak raised public concern globally. Self-isolation and informing close contacts after developing mpox-related symptoms are critical measures in controlling the outbreak. This study investigated behavioral intentions of self-isolation and informing close contacts after developing mpox-related symptoms and associated factors among young men who have sex with men (YMSM) aged 18-29 years in China. The cross-sectional study was conducted among 2493 YMSM in six provincial regions in China from September 10th to 30th, 2022. Descriptive and logistic analyses were applied, using the intentions of self-isolation and informing close contacts after developing mpox-related symptoms as binary outcomes. The mean age of the participants was 24.6 (SD = 2.9) years. The prevalence of having intentions of self-isolation and informing close contacts after developing mpox-related symptoms was 88.6% (95% CI: 87.3%-89.9%) and 84.9% (95% CI: 83.5%-86.3%). Participants who were employed (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.474, 95% CI: 1.035-2.097; AOR = 1.371, 95% CI:1.002, 1.876), had higher mpox knowledge scores (AOR = 1.474, 95% CI: 1.035-2.097; AOR = 1.371, 95% CI: 1.002-1.876), and had higher perceived threats of mpox (AOR = 1.079, 95% CI: 1.030-1.130; AOR = 1.045, 95% CI: 1.002-1.090) were more likely to intend to self-isolate and inform close contacts. Participants who had MSM in-person gatherings in the past 6 months were more likely to intend to self-isolate (AOR = 1.392, 95% CI: 1.066-1.208). Participants with higher depression scores (AOR = 0.968, 95% CI: 0.948-0.989) and self-stigma (AOR = 0.975, 95% CI: 0.954-0.997) were less likely to intend to self-isolate and inform close contacts, respectively. Self-isolation and informing close contacts when developing disease-related symptoms are acceptable measures in response to mpox in China. Strengthening targeted risk communication and self-efficacy, raising disease knowledge, providing mental support, and reducing stigma toward the affected community are warranted.

LiNO3 has attracted intensive attention as a promising electrolyte additive to regulate Li deposition behavior as it can form favorable Li3 N, LiNx Oy species to improve the interfacial stability. However, the inferior solubility in carbonate-based electrolyte restricts its application in high-voltage Li metal batteries. Herein, an artificial composite layer (referred to as PML) composed of LiNO3 and PMMA is rationally designed on Li surface. The PML layer serves as a reservoir for LiNO3 release gradually to the electrolyte during cycling, guaranteeing the stability of SEI layer for uniform Li deposition. The PMMA matrix not only links the nitrogen-containing species for uniform ionic conductivity but also can be coordinated with Li for rapid Li ions migration, resulting in homogenous Li-ion flux and dendrite-free morphology. As a result, stable and dendrite-free plating/stripping behaviors of Li metal anodes are achieved even at an ultrahigh current density of 20 mA cm-2 (>570 h) and large areal capacity of 10 mAh cm-2 (>1200 h). Moreover, the Li||LiFePO4 full cell using PML-Li anode undergoes stable cycling for 2000 cycles with high-capacity retention of 94.8%. This facile strategy will widen the potential application of LiNO3 in carbonate-based electrolyte for practical LMBs.

ABSTRACT

The concentration difference in the near-surface region of lithium metal is the main cause of lithium dendrite growth. Resolving this issue will be key to achieving high-performance lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, we construct a lithium nitrate (LiNO3)-implanted electroactive ß phase polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) crystalline polymorph layer (PHL). The electronegatively charged polymer chains attain lithium ions on the surface to form lithium-ion charged channels. These channels act as reservoirs to sustainably release Li ions to recompense the ionic flux of electrolytes, decreasing the growth of lithium dendrites. The stretched molecular channels can also accelerate the transport of Li ions. The combined effects enable a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.0% for 250 cycles in lithium (Li)||copper (Cu) cell and a stable symmetric plating/stripping behavior over 2000 h at 3 mA cm-2 with ultrahigh Li utilization of 50%. Furthermore, the full cell coupled with PHL-Cu@Li anode and LiFePO4 cathode exhibits long-term cycle stability with high-capacity retention of 95.9% after 900 cycles. Impressively, the full cell paired with LiNi0.87Co0.1Mn0.03O2 maintains a discharge capacity of 170.0 mAh g-1 with a capacity retention of 84.3% after 100 cycles even under harsh condition of ultralow N/P ratio of 0.83. This facile strategy will widen the potential application of LiNO3 in ester-based electrolyte for practical high-voltage LMBs.

ABSTRACT

A high-temperature-resistance insulating layer with high thermal conductivity is the key component for fabricating the instant metal-based electric heating tube. However, it is still a challenge for materials to possess excellent high-temperature resistance, superior insulating property, and high thermal conductivity at the same time. Here, a novel SiO2 bridged AlN/MSR composite based on methylphenyl silicone resin (MSR) and AlN filler was reported. MSR with a high thermal decomposition temperature of 452.0 °C and a high withstand voltage of 5.6 kV was first synthesized by adjusting the contents of alkyl and phenyl groups. The superior high-temperature resistant insulating property is 3.7 and 2.4 times higher than the national standard requirement of 1.5 kV and commercial silicone resin, respectively. The hydrogen bonds formed between SiO2, AlN, and MSR and the electrostatic adsorption between SiO2 and AlN can remarkably improve the uniform dispersion of AlN in MSR and thus enhance the insulating property, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability. With the addition of 2 wt% SiO2 and 50 wt% AlN, the SiO2-AlN/MSR composite exhibits an extremely high withstand voltage of 7.3 kV, a high thermal conductivity of 0.553 W·m-1·K-1, and an enhanced decomposition temperature of 475 °C. The superior insulating property and thermal conductivity are 4.9 and 1.3 times higher than the national standard requirement and pure MSR, respectively. This novel composite shows great potential for application in the fields requiring integrated superior insulating property, high-temperature resistance, and high thermal conductivity.

Microbial co-culture has proven to be an effective way to improve the ability of microorganisms to biocontrol. However, the interactive mechanisms of co-cultural microbes, especially between fungi and bacteria, have rarely been studied. By comparative analysis of morphology, transcriptomics and metabolomics, the interactive mechanisms of a sequential co-culture system of Trichoderma asperellum HG1 and Bacillus subtilis Tpb55 was explored in this study. The results revealed that co- culture has no significant effect on the growth and cell morphology of the two strains, but lead to mycelium wrinkling of HG1. RNA-seq analysis showed that co-culture significantly upregulated the HG1 genes concerning amino acid degradation and metabolism, proteolysis, resisting environmental stress, cell homeostasis, glycolysis, the glyoxylate cycle, and the citric acid (TCA) cycle, while Tpb55 genes related to cell homeostasis, spore formation and membrane fluidization were significantly upregulated, but genes associating to TCA, glycolytic cycles and fatty acid ß-oxidation were significantly downregulated. Metabolomic results revealed that some amino acids related to energy metabolism were significantly altered in HG1, whereas palmitic acid, which is related to cell membrane functions, was upregulated in Tpb55. These results indicated that HG1 could interfere with carbon metabolism and cell membrane fluidity, but accelerate spore formation of Tpb55. Biophysical assays further convinced that co-culture could decrease ATP content and inhibit ATPase activity in HG1, and could promote spore formation and reduce the cell membrane fluidity of Tpb55. In addition, co-culture also accelerated the production of intracellular anti-oomycete compound octhilinone. The above results indicate that HG1 and Tpb55 are mainly in a competitive relationship in the co culture system. These findings provide new insights for understanding the interaction mechanism between co cultured microbes.

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis of gut microbiota is frequent in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients, and splenectomy (SP) has been reported to improve LC. Herein, we report the effects of SP on gut microbiota, especially on Veillonella parvula, a Gram-negative coccus of the gastrointestinal tract, in LC mice, and the underlying mechanism. METHODS: LC mice models were induced by tail vein injection of concanavalin A (ConA), followed by SP. 16 s rRNA sequencing was conducted to analyze the effects of ConA induction and SP on mouse gut microbiota and the gene expression affected by gut microbiota. LC mice receiving SP were gavaged with Veillonella parvula. Likewise, hepatic stellate cells (HSC) and hepatocytes (HC) were induced with conditioned medium (CM) of Veillonella parvula. RESULTS: SP alleviated LC in mice by restoring gut barrier function and maintaining gut microbiota balance, with Veillonella as the key genus. The Veillonella parvula gavage on LC mice reversed the ameliorative effect of SP. The CM of Veillonella parvula promoted the activation of HSC and the release of IL-6, IL-1ß, and TNF-α. Also, the CM of Veillonella parvula induced HC pyroptosis and the release of ALT and AST. Veillonella parvula represented an imbalance in the gut microbiota, thus enhancing gut-derived endotoxins in the liver with the main target being Tlr4/Nlrp3. Inhibition of Tlr4 blocked Veillonella parvula-induced HC damage, HSC activation, and subsequent LC progression. CONCLUSION: SP-mediated gut microbiota regulation ameliorates ConA-related LC progression by inhibiting Tlr4/Nlrp3 in the liver.

ABSTRACT

P2-Na2/3Ni1/3Mn2/3O2 cathode materials have garnered significant attention due to their high cationic and anionic redox capacity under high voltage. However, the challenge of structural instability caused by lattice oxygen evolution and P2-O2 phase transition during deep charging persists. A breakthrough is achieved through a simple one-step synthesis of Cr, Mg co-doped P2-NaNMCM, resulting in a bi-functional improvement effect. P2-NaNMCM-0.01 exhibits an impressive capacity retention rate of 82% after 100 cycles at 1 C. In situ X-ray diffraction analysis shows that the "pillar effect" of Mg mitigates the weakening of the electrostatic shielding and effectively suppresses the phase transition of P2-O2 during the charging and discharging process. This successfully averts serious volume expansion linked to the phase transition, as well as enhances the Na+ migration. Simultaneously, in situ Raman spectroscopy and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests demonstrate that the strong oxygen affinity of Cr forms a robust TM─O bond, effectively restraining lattice oxygen evolution during deep charging. This study pioneers a novel approach to designing and optimizing layered oxide cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries, promising high operating voltage and energy density.
