ABSTRACT

The synergistic interaction gels (SIGs) can be created by blending konjac glucomannan (KGM) and κ-carrageenan, and have been applied to modify and improve the rheological and texture properties of food system. However, the assembly behaviors between them are still unclear. This work revealed that the presence of KGM promoted phase transition of nearby κ-carrageenan molecules probably by contributing to entropy increment. Subsequently, the rest of κ-carrageenan transformed into helical structure, assembled into a series of laterally arranged trigonal units and formed a three-dimensional network. In KGM/κ-carrageenan SIGs, the size of high density domains (Ξ) in aggregates and the distance of these high density domains (ξ) were narrowed firstly and then enlarged as increasing of KGM content. These nano-scale structure features were responsible for the relative higher gel strength for KGM/κ-carrageenan SIGs with proportion ratios of 1:9 (K1C9) and 3:7 (K3C7). This study serves to facilitate the design and production of SIGs with the requisite performance characteristics.

ABSTRACT

An attractive perfume is a complex mixture of compounds, some of which may be unpleasant on their own. This is also true for the volatile combinations from yeast fermentation products in vineyards and orchards when assessed by Drosophila. Here, we used crosses between a yeast strain with an attractive fermentation profile and another strain with a repulsive one and tested fly responses using a T-maze. QTL analysis reveals allelic variation in four yeast genes, namely PTC6, SAT4, YFL040W, and ARI1, that modulated expression levels of volatile compounds [assessed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)] and in different combinations, generated various levels of attractiveness. The parent strain that is more attractive to Drosophila has repulsive alleles at two of the loci, while the least attractive parent has attractive alleles. Behavioral assays using artificial mixtures mimicking the composition of odors from fermentation validated the results of GC-MS and QTL mapping, thereby directly connecting genetic variation in yeast to attractiveness in flies. This study can be used as a basis for dissecting the combination of olfactory receptors that mediate the attractiveness/repulsion of flies to yeast volatiles and may also serve as a model for testing the attractiveness of pest species such as Drosophila suzukii to their host fruit.

ABSTRACT

This article presents the numerical analysis and experimental investigation for the manufacturing of a foam core sandwich spoiler by vacuum-assisted resin injection (VARI) process. To find an injection scheme that guarantees both a good impregnation of the preform and a filling time compatible with the process window, the finite element model (FEM) was applied to analyze the effect of different injection schemes on the resin flow front patterns. Based on the obtained results, two optimal injection schemes are selected to form the spoiler structure. The experimental results show that the best molding quality can be achieved from the thick-end injection with a thin-end exit scheme. The comparison between simulation and experimental results shows that the overall deviation of the numerical analysis on resin flow time is 15.9%.

ABSTRACT

Two Darboux transformations of the (1+1) -dimensional Wu-Zhang (WZ) equation and the two-component Camassa-Holm (2CH) system with the reciprocal transformation are obtained. One-loop and two-loop soliton solutions and multisoliton(like) solutions of the 2CH system are obtained by using the Darboux transformations and selecting different seed solutions of the corresponding equations. The bidirectional soliton solutions of the (1+1) -dimensional WZ equation are also obtained. The interactions of two-soliton head-on and overtaking collisions for the WZ equation and the evolution of the two-soliton(-like) solutions for the 2CH system are studied.

ABSTRACT

A theory of bidirectional solitons on water is developed by using an integrable Boussinesq surface-variable equation. We present an explicit transformation between the system and a member of the Ablowitz-Kaup-Newell-Segur system, and derive an exact multisoliton solution by using a Darboux transformation. The phase shifts and the maximum wave heights during the interaction are studied for two-soliton overtaking and head-on collisions. They agree with the Korteweg-de Vries solution for overtaking collision and the perturbation solution for head-on collision.
