ABSTRACT

Represented herein is a simple thiol identified as an effective precursor to photochemically form a carbocation. Thanks to the thiyl radical rapid transformation to disulfide, which serves not only to stabilize the generated thiyl radical but also to allow the second electron transfer to form a carbocation. The resulting carbocations, including primary benzylic, secondary, and tertiary carbocations, can smoothly couple with nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon nucleophilic coupling partners as well as complex drug molecules, accompanied by elemental sulfur formation in air.

ABSTRACT

Higher-order chromatin structure is critical for regulation of gene expression. In plants, light profoundly affects the morphogenesis of emerging seedlings as well as global gene expression to ensure optimal adaptation to environmental conditions. However, the changes and functional significance of chromatin organization in response to light during seedling development are not well documented. We constructed Hi-C contact maps for the cotyledon, apical hook and hypocotyl of soybean subjected to dark and light conditions. The resulting high-resolution Hi-C contact maps identified chromosome territories, A/B compartments, A/B sub-compartments, TADs (Topologically Associated Domains) and chromatin loops in each organ. We observed increased chromatin compaction under light and we found that domains that switched from B sub-compartments in darkness to A sub-compartments under light contained genes that were activated during photomorphogenesis. At the local scale, we identified a group of TADs constructed by gene clusters consisting of different numbers of Small Auxin-Upregulated RNAs (SAURs), which exhibited strict co-expression in the hook and hypocotyl in response to light stimulation. In the hypocotyl, RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) regulated the transcription of a SAURs cluster under light via TAD condensation. Our results suggest that the 3D genome is involved in the regulation of light-related gene expression in a tissue-specific manner.

ABSTRACT

Industrialization has caused a significant global issue with cadmium (Cd) pollution. In this study, Biochar (Bc), generated through initial pyrolysis of rice straw, underwent thorough mixing with magnetized bentonite clay, followed by activation with KOH and subsequent pyrolysis. Consequently, a magnetized bentonite modified rice straw biochar (Fe3O4@B-Bc) was successfully synthesized for effective treatment and remediation of this problem. Fe3O4@B-Bc not only overcomes the challenges associated with the difficult separation of individual bentonite or biochar from water, but also exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of Cd(II) up to 241.52 mg g-1. The characterization of Fe3O4@B-Bc revealed that its surface was rich in C, O and Fe functional groups, which enable efficient adsorption. The quantitative calculation of the contribution to the adsorption mechanism indicates that cation exchange and physical adsorption accounted for 65.87% of the total adsorption capacity. In conclusion, Fe3O4@B-Bc can be considered a low-cost and recyclable green adsorbent, with broad potential for treating cadmium-polluted water.

ABSTRACT

Sb2S3 has been extensively used as light absorber for photoelectrochemical cell. However, its p-type nature may result in the formation of Schottky junction with substrates, thus hindering the collection of photogenerated holes. Herein, an ultrathin CuxS layer is successfully engineered as the bottom junction for Sb2S3 for the first time. Capitalizing on its impressive electrical properties and superior optical properties, the CuxS layer exhibits a high work function of 4.90 eV, which causes the upward band bending of p-type Sb2S3, forming a hole-transparent structure with ohmic contact. The transparency of the ultrathin CuxS layer enables back-illumination of the Sb2S3/CuxS platform, facilitating the integration of intricate catalyst layers for photoelectrochemical transformation. When modified with Pt nanoparticles, the photocurrent density reaches -5.38 mA cm-2 at 0 V vs. RHE, marking a fourfold increase compared to the photocathode without CuxS layer. When introducing a molecular hybrid TC-CoPc@carbon black, a remarkable average photocurrent density of -0.44 mA cm-2 at the overpotential of 0 V is obtained for CO2 reduction reaction, while the photocurrent density is less than -0.03 mA cm-2 without CuxS.

ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study is to uncover the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments for chronic gastritis and their potential targets and pathways involved in the "inflammation-cancer" conversion in four stages. These findings can provide further support for future research into TCM and its active components. Materials and methods: The literature search encompassed PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, CNKI, WanFang, and VIP, employing keywords such as "chronic gastritis", "gastric cancer", "traditional Chinese medicine", "medicinal herb", "Chinese herb", and "natural plant". Results: Herbal remedies may regulate the signaling pathways linked to the advancement of chronic gastritis. Under the multi-target and multi-pathway independent or combined reaction, the inflammatory microenvironment may be enhanced, leading to repair of damaged gastric mucosal cells, buffering the progress of mucosal atrophic degeneration via the decrease of inflammatory factor expression, inhibition of oxidative stress-induced damage, facilitation of microvascular neovascularization in the gastric mucosa and regulation of the processes of gastric mucosal cell differentiation and proliferation. Simultaneously, the decreased expression of inflammatory factors may impact the expression of associated oncogenes and regulate the malignant proliferation of cells, thereby achieving the treatment and prevention objectives of gastric cancer through the reduction of cell metastasis and apoptosis. Conclusion: Chinese medicine formulations and individual drugs can be utilised at various stages of the "inflammation-cancer" progression of chronic gastritis to prevent and treat gastric cancer in a multi-level, multi-targeted, and multi-directional fashion. This can provide guidance for the accurate application of medicines during different stages of "inflammation-cancer" transformation. New insights into the mechanism of inflammation-cancer transformation and the development of novel drugs for chronic gastritis can be gained through an extensive investigation of TCM treatment in this condition.

ABSTRACT

Wound repair is a complex challenge for both clinical practitioners and researchers. Conventional approaches for wound repair have several limitations. Stem cell-based therapy has emerged as a novel strategy to address this issue, exhibiting significant potential for enhancing wound healing rates, improving wound quality, and promoting skin regeneration. However, the use of stem cells in skin regeneration presents several challenges. Recently, stem cells and biomaterials have been identified as crucial components of the wound-healing process. Combination therapy involving the development of biocompatible scaffolds, accompanying cells, multiple biological factors, and structures resembling the natural extracellular matrix (ECM) has gained considerable attention. Biological scaffolds encompass a range of biomaterials that serve as platforms for seeding stem cells, providing them with an environment conducive to growth, similar to that of the ECM. These scaffolds facilitate the delivery and application of stem cells for tissue regeneration and wound healing. This article provides a comprehensive review of the current developments and applications of biological scaffolds for stem cells in wound healing, emphasizing their capacity to facilitate stem cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and paracrine functions. Additionally, we identify the pivotal characteristics of the scaffolds that contribute to enhanced cellular activity.

ABSTRACT

Photoredox catalytic processes offer the potential for precise chemical reactions using light and materials. The central determinant is identified as interfacial charge transfer, which simultaneously engenders distinctive behavior in the overall reaction. An in-depth elucidation of the main mechanism and highlighting of the complexity of interfacial charge transfer can occur through both diffusive and direct transfer models, revealing its potential for sophisticated design in complex transformations. The fundamental photophysics uncover these comprehensive applications and offer a clue for future development. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on interfacial charge transfer in photoredox catalysis and sets the stage for further exploration of this fascinating area of research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocol is a comprehensive management modality that promotes patient recovery, especially in the patients undergoing digestive tumor surgeries. However, it is less commonly used in the appendectomy. AIM: To study the application value of ERAS in laparoscopic surgery for acute appendicitis. METHODS: A total of 120 patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy due to acute appendicitis were divided into experimental group and control group by random number table method, including 63 patients in the experimental group and 57 patients in the control group. Patients in the experimental group were managed with the ERAS protocol, and those in the control group were received the traditional treatment. The exhaust time, the hospitalization duration, the hospitalization expense and the pain score between the two groups were compared. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in age, gender, body mass index and Sunshine Appendicitis Grading System score between the experimental group and the control group (P > 0.05). Compared to the control group, the patients in the experimental group had earlier exhaust time, shorter hospitalization time, less hospitalization cost and lower degree of pain sensation. The differences were statistically significant (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: ERAS could significantly accelerate the recovery of patients who underwent laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis, shorten the hospitalization time and reduce hospitalization costs. It is a safe and effective approach.

ABSTRACT

Benign natural killer cell enteropathy (NKCE) was first identified in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Notably, instances of NKCE have previously been observed at various sites other than the GI tract, including the gallbladder, lymph nodes, esophagus, and female genital tract. Typical NKCE manifests as an NK-cell immunohistological phenotype, with or without TCR rearrangement, and is characterized by the absence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and protracted clinical progression. The misdiagnosis of NKT-cell lymphoma has resulted in some patients receiving chemotherapy, while in other instances, the patients' conditions resolved without treatment and showed no evidence of disease recurrence or progression during follow-up examinations. In this paper, we describe a unique case of EBV-negative NKCE occurring in the oral cavity, the first time such a case has been documented. The tumor completely resolved after an excisional biopsy, and subsequent follow-up did not reveal any signs of disease recurrence.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the effectiveness of incorporating the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer (ChatGPT) into the clinical teaching of hepatobiliary surgery for undergraduate medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 61 medical undergraduates from the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University, undergoing hepatobiliary surgery training, were randomly assigned to either an experimental group (31 students) using ChatGPT-based blended teaching or a control group (30 students) with traditional teaching methods. The evaluation metrics included final exam scores, teaching satisfaction, and teaching effectiveness ratings, analyzed using SPSS 26.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL) with t-tests and χ2 tests. RESULTS: The experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in final exam theoretical scores (86.44 ± 5.59 vs. 77.86 ± 4.16, p < .001) and clinical skills scores (83.84 ± 6.13 vs. 79.12 ± 4.27, p = .001). Additionally, the experimental group reported higher teaching satisfaction (17.23 ± 1.33) and self-evaluation of teaching effectiveness (9.14 ± 0.54) compared to the control group (15.38 ± 1.5 and 8.46 ± 0.70, respectively, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The integration of ChatGPT into hepatobiliary surgery education significantly enhances theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and overall satisfaction among medical undergraduates, suggesting a beneficial impact on their educational development.

ABSTRACT

Low-cost formate salt was used as the reductant and part of the carboxyl source in a visible-light-driven dicarboxylation of diverse alkenes, including simple styrenes. The highly competing hydrocarboxylation side reaction was successfully overridden. Good yields of products were obtained under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature and pressure of CO2. The dual role of formate salt may stimulate the discovery of a range of new transformations under mild and friendly conditions.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, a novel transistor based on a hybrid conduction mechanism of band-to-band tunneling and drift-diffusion is proposed and investigated with the aid of TCAD tools. Besides the on and off states, the proposed device presents an additional intermediate state between the on and off states. Based on the tri-state behavior of the proposed TDFET (tunneling and drift-diffusion field-effect transistor), a ternary inverter is designed and its operation principle is studied in detail. It was found that this device achieves ternary logic with only two components, and its structure is simple. In addition, the influence of the supply voltage and the key device parameters are also investigated.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the incidence of enteral nutrition intolerance (ENI) in patients with sepsis and explore potential risk factors. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in patients with sepsis who were receiving enteral nutrition (EN) at a tertiary hospital in China. The included patients were divided into the ENI group and the non-ENI group. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the risk factors for ENI. RESULTS: A total of 859 patients were included in the study. Among them, 288 (33.53%) patients experienced symptoms of ENI, including diarrhea, vomiting, bloating, and gastric retention. Logistic regression analysis revealed that the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation H (APACHE H) score, thoracocentesis, and usage of cardiotonic drugs (namely, inotropes) were independent predictors of the ENI. CONCLUSION: The incidence of ENI is relatively high in patients with sepsis, especially in those who have higher APACHE H scores, have undergone thoracocentesis, and have received inotropes.

ABSTRACT

Photo-mineralization of microplastics under mild conditions has emerged as a promising solution to plastic waste disposal. However, the inadequate contact between oxygen, water-insoluble polyolefin microplastics, and photocatalysts remains a critical issue. In this study, a TiO2 hierarchical porous layer (TiO2-HPL) photocatalyst is presented to establish air-plastic-solid triphase interfaces for the photothermal mineralization of polyolefins. The wettability of the TiO2-HPL-based triphase interface is finely controlled from plastophobic to plastophilic. High-resolution imaging and finite element simulation demonstrate the significance of a semiwetting state in achieving multidirectional oxygen diffusion through the hierarchical pore structure while maintaining sufficient contact between the plastic phase and photocatalysts. For low-density polyethylene, the TiO2-HPL achieves a photothermal mineralization rate of 5.63 mmol g-1 h-1 and a conversion of 26.3% after 20 h of continuous irradiation. Additionally, the triphase photocatalytic system with semiwetting gas-plastic-solid interfaces shows good universality for various polyolefin reagents and products, illustrating its potential in achieving efficient photothermal mineralization of non-degradable microplastics.

Microglia are versatile regulators in brain development and disorders. Emerging evidence links microRNA (miRNA)-mediated regulation to microglial function; however, the exact underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Here, we uncover the enrichment of miR-137, a neuropsychiatric-disorder-associated miRNA, in the microglial nucleus, and reveal its unexpected nuclear functions in maintaining the microglial global transcriptomic state, phagocytosis, and inflammatory response. Mechanistically, microglial Mir137 deletion increases chromatin accessibility, which contains binding motifs for the microglial master transcription factor Pu.1. Through biochemical and bioinformatics analyses, we propose that miR-137 modulates Pu.1-mediated gene expression by suppressing Pu.1 binding to chromatin. Importantly, we find that increased Pu.1 binding upregulates the target gene Jdp2 (Jun dimerization protein 2) and that knockdown of Jdp2 significantly suppresses the impaired phagocytosis and pro-inflammatory response in Mir137 knockout microglia. Collectively, our study provides evidence supporting the notion that nuclear miR-137 acts as a transcriptional modulator and that this microglia-specific function is essential for maintaining normal adult brain function.

ABSTRACT

Accurate prediction of cadmium (Cd) ecotoxicity to and accumulation in soil biota is important in soil health. However, very limited information on Cd ecotoxicity on naturally contaminated soils. Herein, we investigated soil Cd ecotoxicity using Folsomia candida, a standard single-species test animal, in 28 naturally Cd-contaminated soils, and the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model was used to predict Cd ecotoxicity to and accumulation in F. candida. Soil total Cd and pH were the primary soil properties affecting Cd toxicity. However, soil pH was the main factor when the total Cd concentration was < 3 mg kg-1. Interestingly, correlation analysis and the K-spiked test confirmed nutrient potassium (K) was essential for Cd accumulation, highlighting the significance of studying K in Cd accumulation. The BPNN model showed greater prediction accuracy of collembolan survival rate (R2 = 0.797), reproduction inhibitory rate (R2 = 0.827), body Cd concentration (R2 = 0.961), and Cd bioaccumulation factor (R2 = 0.964) than multiple linear regression models. Then the developed BPNN model was used to predict Cd ecological risks in 57 soils in southern China. Compared to multiple linear regression models, the BPNN models can better identify high-risk regions. This study highlights the potential of BPNN as a novel and rapid tool for the evaluation and monitoring of Cd ecotoxicity in naturally contaminated soils.
