ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: CD19-targeted chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy stands out as a revolutionary intervention, exhibiting remarkable remission rates in patients with refractory/relapsed (R/R) B-cell malignancies. However, the potential side effects of therapy, particularly cytokine release syndrome (CRS) and infections, pose significant challenges due to their overlapping clinical features. Promptly distinguishing between CRS and infection post CD19 target CAR-T cell infusion (CTI) remains a clinical dilemma. Our study aimed to analyze the incidence of infections and identify key indicators for early infection detection in febrile patients within 30 days post-CTI for B-cell malignancies. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, a cohort of 104 consecutive patients with R/R B-cell malignancies who underwent CAR-T therapy was reviewed. Clinical data including age, gender, CRS, ICANS, treatment history, infection incidence, and treatment responses were collected. Serum biomarkers procalcitonin (PCT), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were analyzed using chemiluminescent assays. Statistical analyses employed Pearson's Chi-square test, t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, Cox proportional hazards regression model, Spearman rank correlation, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to evaluate diagnostic accuracy and develop predictive models through multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: In this study, 38 patients (36.5%) experienced infections (30 bacterial, 5 fungal, and 3 viral) within the first 30 days of CAR T-cell infusion. In general, bacterial, fungal, and viral infections were detected at a median of 7, 8, and 9 days, respectively, after CAR T-cell infusion. Prior allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) was an independent risk factor for infection (Hazard Ratio [HR]: 4.432 [1.262-15.565], P = 0.020). Furthermore, CRS was an independent risk factor for both infection ((HR: 2.903 [1.577-5.345], P < 0.001) and severe infection (9.040 [2.256-36.232], P < 0.001). Serum PCT, IL-6, and CRP were valuable in early infection prediction post-CAR-T therapy, particularly PCT with the highest area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.897. A diagnostic model incorporating PCT and CRP demonstrated an AUC of 0.903 with sensitivity and specificity above 83%. For severe infections, a model including CRS severity and PCT showed an exceptional AUC of 0.991 with perfect sensitivity and high specificity. Based on the aforementioned analysis, we proposed a workflow for the rapid identification of early infection during CAR-T cell therapy. CONCLUSIONS: CRS and prior allogeneic HCT are independent infection risk factors post-CTI in febrile B-cell malignancy patients. Our identification of novel models using PCT and CRP for predicting infection, and PCT and CRS for predicting severe infection, offers potential to guide therapeutic decisions and enhance the efficacy of CAR-T cell therapy in the future.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the gelling properties, rheological behaviour, and microstructure of heat-induced, low-salt myofibrillar protein (MP) gels containing different levels (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%, w/w) of cross-linked (CTS) or acetylated (ATS) tapioca starch. The results indicated that either CTS or ATS significantly enhanced the gel strength and water-holding capacity of low-salt MP gels (P < 0.05), an outcome verified by the rheological behaviour test results under different modes. Furthermore, iodine-staining images indicated that the MP-dominated continuous phase gradually transited to a starch-dominated phase with increasing CTS or ATS levels, and 4% was the critical point for this phase transition. In addition, hydrophobic interactions and disulphide bonds constituted the major intermolecular forces of low-salt MP gels, effectively promoting phase transition. In brief, modified tapioca starches possess considerable potential application value in low-salt meat products.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a common metabolic disorder that significantly impacts quality of life in the elderly population. Macrophages play a crucial role in the development of osteoporosis by regulating bone metabolism through cytokine secretion. However, there is a lack of scholarly literature in the field of bibliometrics on this topic. OBJECTIVE: This study provides a detailed analysis of the research focus and knowledge structure of macrophage studies in osteoporosis using bibliometrics. METHODS: The scientific literature on macrophage research in the context of osteoporosis, retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database spanning from January 1999 to December 2023, has been incorporated for bibliometric examination. The data is methodically analyzed and visually represented using analytical and visualization tools including VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Scimago Graphica, the Bibliometrix R package, and Pajek. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In the last quarter-century, there has been a consistent rise in the quantity of scholarly publications focusing on the relationship between macrophages and osteoporosis, resulting in a total of 1499 research documents. These studies have originated from 45 different countries, with China, South Korea, and the United States being the most prominent contributors, and the United States having the highest frequency of citations. Noteworthy research institutions involved in this field include Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Wonkwang University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Seoul National University. The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research is widely regarded as the premier and most frequently referenced publication in the field. These publications involve the collaboration of 8744 authors, with Lee Myeung Su contributing the most articles, and Takayanagi being the most co-cited author. Key emerging research focal points are encapsulated in keywords such as "mTOR," "BMSCs," "bone regeneration," and "exosome." The relationships between exosome from macrophage sources and those from BMSCs, along with the regulatory role of the mTOR signaling pathway on macrophages, represent crucial directions for future development in this field. This study represents the inaugural comprehensive bibliometric analysis detailing trends and advancements in macrophage research within the osteoporosis domain. It delineates recent frontiers and hotspots, providing valuable insights for researchers in this particular area of study.

ABSTRACT

Background: The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia continues to increase, which poses a significant risk for coronary artery disease. Some patients with dyslipidemia do not respond to or benefit from conventional lipid-lowering therapy, which warrants the need for alternative and complementary therapies. Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has shown great potential in the treatment of dyslipidemia, but its clinical value needs to be further explored. This study aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of CPM in treating dyslipidemia. Methods: This study was registered in INPLASY as INPLASY202330090. The randomized controlled trials included in this study were published in January 2013 to March 2023 and retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Internet, WanFang, and VIP. The bias risk in the study was independently evaluated by two reviewers using the Cochrane Randomized Trial Bias Risk Tool (RoB 2) Review Manager 5.4 software was used for the overall effect analysis and subgroup analysis of four blood lipids, and the trial sequential analysis (TSA) was conducted to check the results. Results: A total of 69 studies were included, involving 6,993 participants. The methodological quality was in the middle level. Meta-analysis showed that CPM markedly improved the levels of total cholesterol (TC) [mean difference (MD) =-0.54 mmol/L; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.71 to -0.37; P<0.001], triglyceride (TG) (MD =-0.43 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.53 to -0.33; P<0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (MD =-0.40 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.50 to -0.30; P<0.001) and increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (MD =0.23 mmol/L; 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.27; P<0.001), in patients with dyslipidemia. Though CPM did not differ significantly from statins when used alone, it could improve lipid profile better in all cases when used in combination with statins and with drugs used for comorbidities or co-morbidities. Subgroup analysis found that the efficacy of pill formulations was superior to other formulations, and CPM showed better lipid-lowering response in the context of comorbidity. The TSA confirmed the robustness of the analysis of the LDL-C level. No significant difference was observed in the incidence of adverse events between the treatment group and the control group [risk ratio (RR) =0.89; 95% CI: 0.69-1.16; P=0.40]. Conclusions: CPM can yield superior therapeutic effects in ameliorating dyslipidemia without exacerbating adverse effects as an alternative and complementary therapy. In addition, the therapeutic effect can be improved by emphasizing pill formulation and strengthening the standardization of syndromes.

Background: In recent years, although laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy (LPD) has experienced rapid development both domestically and internationally, however, there are still varying opinions toward LPD. Methods: From January 2020 to July 2022, the data were collected. We compared the inflammatory response at various postoperative time points and evaluated long-term outcomes between the two groups. Results: In the early stage, the LPD group exhibited lower values of white blood cells, C-reactive protein, neutrophils, and platelets after surgery compared with open pancreatoduodenectomy (OPD) (P all<0.05). However, no statistically significant differences were observed in terms of procalcitonin, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio. Before propensity score matching, no statistical significance was observed between two groups, whether in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) (P = .406) or overall survival (OS) (P = .851). However, to further control for confounding factors, propensity score matching was used. The analysis revealed that DFS still showed no significant difference (P = .928), but, in the term of OS, a statistical significance was observed between the two groups. Conclusion: LPD demonstrates a comparable long-term outcomes to OPD and even slightly superior OS. Moreover, the LPD group exhibits a lower inflammatory response during early postoperative period.

ABSTRACT

Filamentous fungi produce polysaccharide-degrading enzymes, which is controlled by poorly understood transcriptional circuits. Here we show that a circuit comprising RsrC-RsrA-RsrB (Rsr: production of raw-starch-degrading enzyme regulator) that positively regulates production of raw starch-degrading enzymes in Penicillium oxalicum. Transcription factor (TF) RsrA is essential for biosynthesis of raw starch-degrading enzymes. RsrB and RsrC containing Zn2Cys6- and C2H2-zinc finger domains, act downstream and upstream of RsrA, respectively. RsrA activates rsrB transcription, and three nucleotides (G-286, G-287 and G-292) of rsrB promoter region are required for RsrA, in terms of TF, for binding. RsrB165-271 binds to DNA sequence 5'-TCGATCAGGCACGCC-3' in the promoter region of the gene encoding key raw-starch-degrading enzyme PoxGA15A. RsrC specifically binds rsrA promoter, but not amylase genes, to positively regulate the expression of rsrA and the production of raw starch-degrading enzymes. These findings expand complex regulatory network of fungal raw starch-degrading enzyme biosynthesis.

ABSTRACT

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in treating relapsed/refractory acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukaemia (R/R B-ALL). However, a subset of patients does not benefit from CAR-T therapy. Our study aims to identify predictive indicators and establish a model to evaluate the feasibility of CAR-T therapy. Fifty-five R/R B-ALL patients and 22 healthy donors were enrolled. Peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets were analysed using flow cytometry. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive and negative predictive values and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) areas under the curve (AUC) were determined to evaluate the predictive values of the indicators. We identified B lymphocyte, regulatory T cell (Treg) and peripheral blood minimal residual leukaemia cells (B-MRD) as indicators for predicting the success of CAR-T cell preparation with AUC 0.936, 0.857 and 0.914. Furthermore, a model based on CD3+ T count, CD4+ T/CD8+ T ratio, Treg and extramedullary diseases (EMD) was used to predict the response to CAR-T therapy with AUC of 0.938. Notably, a model based on CD4+ T/CD8+ T ratio, B, Treg and EMD were used in predicting the success of CAR-T therapy with AUC 0.966 [0.908-1.000], with specificity (92.59%) and sensitivity (91.67%). In the validated group, the predictive model predicted the success of CAR-T therapy with specificity (90.91%) and sensitivity (100%). We have identified several predictive indicators for CAR-T cell therapy success and a model has demonstrated robust predictive capacity for the success of CAR-T therapy. These results show great potential for guiding informed clinical decisions in the field of CAR-T cell therapy.

ABSTRACT

In present study, the quality profiles, microstructures and in vitro digestibility of pork chip snacks (PCS) prepared by microwave vacuum drying (MVD) under different drying times (20, 21, 22, 23, and 24 min) were investigated. The results revealed significant decreases in the moisture content and L*-value of PCS, while the protein/ash contents, a*-value, and b*-value of PCS markedly increased with prolonged MVD time (P < 0.05). Additionally, as MVD time extended from 20 to 24 min, the textural characteristics of PCS, particularly brittleness and crunchiness, initially increased and then gradually decreased (P < 0.05). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that a moderate MVD time (22 min) resulted in the formation of larger pores in PCS, enhancing brittleness and crunchiness. However, excessive MVD time (24 min) led to the melting of these pores, subsequently reducing the brittleness and crunchiness of PCS. Furthermore, in vitro protein digestibility of PCS gradually decreased with increasing MVD time, primarily attributed to increased protein aggregation, as indicated by changes in sulfhydryl contents. In summary, our findings highlight that PCS subjected to 22 min of MVD exhibited the highest overall acceptability. This study provides a novel strategy for the application of MVD in the processing of meat snacks.

ABSTRACT

In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions is summarized. Beyond 2D structures, exploration also extends to 1D magnetic solitons and 3D spin textures. In addition, a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials is introduced, including antiferromagnets and 2D van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism is provided. Finally, both conventional and unconventional applications are summarized based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics.

ABSTRACT

Eutectic alloys (EAs) with superior fluidity are known to be the easiest to cast into high-quality ingots, making them the alloys of choice for making large-sized structural parts. However, conventional EAs (CEAs) have never reached strength-ductility combinations on par with the best in other alloy categories. Via thermomechanical processing of cast Ni-32.88wt%Fe-9.53wt%Al CEAs, a cocoon-like nano-meshed (as fine as 26 nm) network of dislocations (CNN-D) is produced via recovery annealing, through the rearrangement of cold-work-accumulated dislocations anchored by dense pre-existing nanoprecipitates. In lieu of traditional plasticity mechanisms, such as TWIP and TRIP, the CNN-D is particularly effective in eutectic lamellae with alternating phases, as it instigates nanometer-spaced planar slip bands that not only dynamically refine the microstructure but also transmit from the FCC (face-centered-cubic) layers into the otherwise brittle B2 layers. These additional mechanisms for strengthening and strain hardening sustain stable tensile flow, resulting in a striking elevation of both strength and ductility to outrank not only all previous CEAs, but also the state of the art-additively manufactured eutectic high-entropy alloys. The CNN-D thus adds a novel microstructural strategy for performance enhancement, especially for compositionally complex alloys that increasingly make use of nanoprecipitates or local chemical order.

ABSTRACT

Osteoporosis (OP) is a systemic metabolic bone disease that is characterized by decreased bone mineral density and microstructural damage to bone tissue. Recent studies have demonstrated significant advances in the research of programmed cell death (PCD) in OP. However, there is no bibliometric analysis in this research field. This study searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database for literature related to OP and PCD from 2000 to 2023. This study used VOSviewers 1.6.20, the "bibliometrix" R package, and CiteSpace (6.2.R3) for bibliometric and visualization analysis. A total of 2905 articles from 80 countries were included, with China and the United States leading the way. The number of publications related to PCD in OP is increasing year by year. The main research institutions are Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chinese Medical University, Southern Medical University, Zhejiang University, and Soochow University. Bone is the most popular journal in the field of PCD in OP, and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research is the most co-cited journal. These publications come from 14,801 authors, with Liu Zong-Ping, Yang Lei, Manolagas Stavros C, Zhang Wei, and Zhao Hong-Yan having published the most papers. Ronald S. Weinstein was co-cited most often. Oxidative stress and autophagy are the current research hot spots for PCD in OP. This bibliometric study provides the first comprehensive summary of trends and developments in PCD research in OP. This information identifies the most recent research frontiers and hot directions, which will provide a definitive reference for scholars studying PCD in OP.

BACKGROUND: Impaired visual mental imagery is an important symptom of depression and has gradually become an intervention target for cognitive behavioral therapy. METHODS: Our study involved a total of 25 healthy controls (HC) and 23 individuals with moderate depressive symptoms (MD). This study explored the attentional mechanism supporting visual mental imagery impairments in depression using the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ), attentional network test (ANT), and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The intrinsic activity of attention-related regions relative to those supporting visual mental imagery was identified in depression patients. In addition, a meta-analysis was used to describe the cognitive function related to this intrinsic activity. RESULTS: The global correlation (GCOR) of the right anterior fusiform gyrus (FG) was decreased in depression patients. Attention-related areas were concentrated in the right posterior FG; the anterior and posterior functional connectivity (FC) of the FG was decreased in depression patients. Graph theoretic analysis showed that the degree of the right anterior FG was decreased, the degree of the anterior insula was increased, and the negative connection between these two regions was strengthened in depression patients. In addition, the degree of the right anterior FG, the FC between the subregions of the right FG, and the FC between the right anterior FG and insula were correlated with VVIQ scores; however, this correlation was not significant in depression patients. The meta-analysis suggested that the changes in the anterior FG in depressed patients may stem from difficulties of semantic memory retrieval. CONCLUSION: The changed intrinsic activity of subregions of the FG relative to the semantic memory retrieval may be associated with visual mental imagery impairments in depression.

ABSTRACT

Hormones and neurotransmitters are essential to homeostasis, and their disruptions are connected to diseases ranging from cancer to anxiety. The differential reactivation of endobiotic glucuronides by gut microbial ß-glucuronidase (GUS) enzymes may influence interindividual differences in the onset and treatment of disease. Using multi-omic, in vitro, and in vivo approaches, we show that germ-free mice have reduced levels of active endobiotics and that distinct gut microbial Loop 1 and FMN GUS enzymes drive hormone and neurotransmitter reactivation. We demonstrate that a range of FDA-approved drugs prevent this reactivation by intercepting the catalytic cycle of the enzymes in a conserved fashion. Finally, we find that inhibiting GUS in conventional mice reduces free serotonin and increases its inactive glucuronide in the serum and intestines. Our results illuminate the indispensability of gut microbial enzymes in sustaining endobiotic homeostasis and indicate that therapeutic disruptions of this metabolism promote interindividual response variabilities.

ABSTRACT

Particulate matter (PM) has been a dominant contributor to air contamination, which will enter the central nervous system (CNS), causing neurotoxicity. However, the biological mechanism is poorly identified. In this study, C57BL/6J mice were applied to evaluate the neurotoxicity of collected fine particulate matter (PM2.5), via oropharyngeal aspiration at two ambient equivalent concentrations. The Y-maze results showed that PM2.5 exposure in mice would lead to the damage in hippocampal-dependent working memory. In addition, cell neuroinflammation, microglial activation were detected in hippocampus of PM2.5-exposure mice. To confirm the underlying mechanism, the microarray assay was conducted to screen the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in microglia after PM2.5 exposure, and the results indicated the enrichment of DEGs in ferroptosis pathways. Furthermore, Heme oxygenase-1 (Hmox1) was found to be one of the most remarkably upregulated genes after PM2.5 exposure for 24 h. And PM2.5 exposure induced ferroptosis with iron accumulation through heme degradation by Nrf2-mediated Hmox1 upregulation, which could be eliminated by Nrf2-inhibition. Meanwhile, Hmox1 antagonist zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP) could protect BV2 cells from ferroptosis. The results taken together indicated that PM2.5 resulted in the ferroptosis by causing iron overload through Nrf2/Hmox1 signaling pathway, which could account for the inflammation in microglia.

We theoretically show the asymmetric spin wave transmission in a coupled waveguide-skyrmion structure, where the skyrmion acts as an effective nanocavity allowing the whispering gallery modes for magnons. The asymmetry originates from the chiral spin wave mode localized in the circular skyrmion wall. By inputting two-tone excitations and mixing them in the skyrmion wall, we observe a unidirectional output magnon frequency comb propagating in the waveguide with a record number of teeth (>50). This coupled waveguide-cavity structure turns out to be a universal paradigm for generating asymmetric magnon frequency combs, where the cavity can be generalized to other magnetic structures that support the whispering gallery mode of magnons. Our results advance the understanding of the nonlinear interaction between magnons and magnetic textures and open a new pathway to exploring the asymmetric spin wave transmission and to steering the magnon frequency comb.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Obesity and osteoporosis (OP) are receiving increasing attention. Waist circumference (WC) is an effective indicator for assessing central obesity. Currently, there is controversy regarding the relationship between WC and bone mineral density (BMD), as well as OP. Therefore, our study aims to utilize data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to evaluate the relationship between WC and BMD, as well as OP, in US adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included subjects aged ≥18 years from the NHANES 1999-2018. Multivariate linear regression models were performed to investigate the association between WC and BMD. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to assess the relationship between WC and OP. Restricted cubic spline curves were used to assess potential nonlinear association between WC and BMD, OP. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed to assess the robustness of the results. RESULTS: Finally, 11,165 participants (non-OP, n = 10,465; OP, n = 700) were included in the final analysis. The results showed that WC was positively associated with total femur (TF), femoral neck (FN), and lumbar spine (LS) BMD, and might be a protective factor for OP, independent of traditional confounding factors. For each 1 cm increased in WC, TF BMD, FN BMD and LS BMD increased by 0.004 g/cm2, 0.003 g/cm2 and 0.003 g/cm2, respectively, and the risk of OP decreased by 3.1 %. Furthermore, there was a non-linear relationship between WC and BMD, OP. The association remained robust in sensitivity and subgroup analyses. CONCLUSION: In US adults, there is a positive association between WC and BMD, and WC may be a protective factor for the risk of OP. The association between WC and BMD as well as OP exhibits a non-linear relationship.

ABSTRACT

Background: Pancreaticoduodenectomy serves as the standard surgical treatment for periampullary tumors. Previous studies have suggested that high body mass index (BMI) is associated with an unfavorable prognosis following laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD). However, the relationship between low BMI and postoperative complications remains unclear. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical data from 1130 patients who underwent LPD between April 2014 and December 2022 was conducted. Multivariate regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were utilized to explore the correlations between BMI and short-term outcomes, with adjustments for potential confounders. Results: Multivariable logistic regression revealed that overweight, obese, or severely underweight patients had an elevated risk of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) compared to those with a normal BMI. Moreover, obesity was significantly correlated with a higher proportion of "failure to rescue." BMI exhibited a J-shaped relationship with respiratory complications and in-hospital mortality, a W-shaped relationship with multiple complications and anastomotic leakage (pancreatic fistula), and a U-shaped association with "failure to rescue" rates. The lowest risk was observed at BMI levels of 20 and 25 kg/m2 for multiple complications and pancreatic fistula, respectively. Conclusion: Both high and low BMI are identified as risk factors for the occurrence of postoperative POPF and in-hospital mortality following LPD. Notably, patients with higher BMI and severe underweight conditions are associated with an increased likelihood of "failure to rescue."

BACKGROUND: Recently, patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have experienced a higher incidence and severer degree of vascular calcification (VC), which leads to an increase in the incidence and mortality of vascular complications in patients with T2DM. HYPOTHESIS: To construct and validate prediction models for the risk of VC in patients with T2DM. METHODS: Twenty-three baseline demographic and clinical characteristics were extracted from the electronic medical record system. Ten clinical features were screened with least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method and were used to develop prediction models based on eight machine learning (ML) algorithms (k-nearest neighbor [k-NN], light gradient boosting machine, logistic regression [LR], multilayer perception [(MLP], Naive Bayes [NB], random forest [RF], support vector machine [SVM], XGBoost [XGB]). Model performance was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), accuracy, and precision. RESULTS: A total of 1407 and 352 patients were retrospectively collected in the training and test sets, respectively. Among the eight models, the AUC value in the NB model was higher than the other models (NB: 0.753, LGB: 0.719, LR: 0.749, MLP: 0.715, RF: 0.722, SVM: 0.689, XGB:0.707, p < .05 for all). The k-NN model achieved the highest sensitivity of 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.633-0.857), the MLP model achieved the highest accuracy of 0.81 (95% CI: 0.767-0.852) and specificity of 0.875 (95% CI: 0.836-0.912). CONCLUSIONS: This study developed a predictive model of VC based on ML and clinical features in type 2 diabetic patients. The NB model is a tool with potential to facilitate clinicians in identifying VC in high-risk patients.

ABSTRACT

This study primarily aimed to investigate the influence of seaweed dietary fibre (SDF), as a potential alternative to phosphates, on the quality profiles and flavour attributes of frankfurters. The results revealed that SDF addition can significantly improve the cooking yield and texture characteristics of phosphate-free frankfurters (P < 0.05), and 1.00% SDF proved to be the optimal concentration for replacing phosphates in frankfurters. Moreover, electronic nose and electronic tongue analyses demonstrated that SDF incorporation potentially influences the aroma and taste of phosphate-free frankfurters. Furthermore, volatile compound analysis revealed that SDF addition potentially compensates for the decrease in volatile flavour compound content caused by phosphate deficiency. Generally, our results indicate that SDF can be successfully applied as a potential alternative to phosphates and subsequently improve the quality profiles and flavour attributes of phosphate-free frankfurters. Moreover, they provide valuable theoretical guidance for the processing of phosphate-free emulsified meat products.
