ABSTRACT

In this research, the different methods (acid extraction, alkaline extraction and enzymatic extraction) were used to extract soluble dietary fiber (SDF) from pomegranate peel and compared with water extraction. Results revealed that all three extraction methods influenced the structure, physicochemical and functional properties of SDF. Especially, SDF extracted by enzymes (E-SDF) and SDF extracted by alkali (A-SDF) had higher yield (27.30% and 27.17%), molecular weight and thermal stability than SDF extracted by water (W-SDF). Higher oil holding capacity (OHC) was found in SDF extracted by acid (C-SDF) (3.18 g/g), A-SDF (3.18 g/g) and E-SDF (5.36 g/g) compared with W-SDF. In addition, A-SDF showed the smallest particle size, lowest ζ-potential and highest viscosity among the tested samples. E-SDF presented a more porous structure, better glucose adsorption capacity (GAC) and antioxidant activity than C-SDF and A-SDF. To sum up, A-SDF and E-SDF may have great potential to be functional food ingredients in the food industry.

ABSTRACT

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) is a rare tumor that occurs in the retroperitoneal region and accounts for ~0.2% of all malignant tumor incidence. The present study describes the treatment of a surviving patient with RPLS that recurred five times in 13 years. This case has a long survival time and numerous relapses, which is a rare occurrence. The 40-year-old female patient was admitted to Shaoxing Second Hospital (Shaoxing, China) with an abdominal mass. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan revealed multiple liposarcoma recurrences in the abdominal, pelvic and retroperitoneal areas. As the diagnosis of RPLS was the fifth recurrence, cytoreductive surgery was performed and post-operative pathology suggested mixed liposarcoma. The patient underwent six cycles of doxorubicin and ifosfamide regimen chemotherapy and targeted therapy with anlotinib following surgery; no evidence of disease progression was found on abdominal CT scan during follow-up. The present study also reviewed the literature in terms of the clinical diagnosis, treatment, pathological characteristics and similar cases of liposarcoma with the aim of improving diagnosis and treatment.

ABSTRACT

A preparation method involving the combination of high-pressure homogenization and ultrasound (HPH-US) techniques was employed to produce starch nanocrystals (NCs) from three botanical starch sources: chestnut, corn starch, and potato starch. The optimal conditions, determined using response surface methodology, consisted of a homogenization pressure of 60 MPa and ultrasound at 280 W for 30 min. The utilization of dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) unveiled that the resulting starch particles exhibited nanometric dimensions ranging from 135.36 to 203.47 nm. The mechanical forces generated by the HPH-US treatment significantly enhanced the physicochemical properties of the starch NCs, leading to a partial disruption of the crystalline structure. Moreover, the potential application of the synthesized starch NCs as fat replacers (FRs) was investigated. As the degree of substitution increased, notable improvements were observed in the hardness and viscosity of ice cream, accompanied by a reduction in the melting rate. The overall sensory evaluation indicated that corn starch NCs held substantial promise as a viable alternative FR for enhancing the quality of ice cream.

BACKGROUND: Water extraction (WE) is the classical extraction method for tamarind xyloglucan (XyG), but its low yield, high viscosity and poor dispersion in aqueous solution are not conducive to the industrial applications. To promote the industrial application of tamarind XyG, an ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) method for extracting low-viscosity XyG from tamarind kernel powder was proposed. RESULTS: The yield of UAE-XyG was higher (502.33 ± 0.036 g kg-1 ) than that of WE-XyG (163.43 ± 0.085 g kg-1 ). UAE reduced the molecular weight, monosaccharide content and apparent viscosity of XyG. The hypoglycemic experiment in vitro showed that UAE-XyG had a stronger inhibitory effect on α-amylase activity than WE-XyG, but its glucose dialysis retardation index was lower. CONCLUSION: In sum, UAE is a type of extraction method that could effectively improve the yield of XyG and reduce its viscosity to expand its application without reducing its physiological activity. UAE exhibits an excellent potential in the extraction of XyG. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Congenital pulmonary hypoplasia is a relatively rare lung malformation. The disease is usually identified in the neonatal period or early childhood. Most affected patients die of respiratory insufficiency after birth. Mild congenital dysplasia is asymptomatic, while moderate congenital dysplasia manifests as respiratory distress or does not become evident until adulthood. Cases of congenital pulmonary hypoplasia in adults are rare, especially in combination with malignant tumors. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report the case of a 64-year-old man with buccal carcinoma who was accidentally found to have hypoplasia of the left lung during treatment. DIAGNOSES: After chest computed tomography and chest radiograph, the diagnosis of adult congenital pulmonary hypoplasia was confirmed. INTERVENTIONS: Since the patient had a history of bronchiectasis for more than 30 years and only had 1 healthy lung, the cardiopulmonary compensatory function was poor and the patient could not tolerate surgery, he was given radiotherapy and chemotherapy. OUTCOMES: Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were successfully completed, and within the patient's tolerance, there was no serious adverse reaction of respiratory system. CONCLUSION: Congenital pulmonary hypoplasia's diagnosis is challenging in adults because the condition can easily be mistaken for a more common disease. However, early diagnosis is very important to enable prompt therapy and ensure proper follow-up to detect and treat complications such as pulmonary infection and pulmonary hypertension in a timely manner.

ABSTRACT

In this study, citric acid modified cellulose nanocrystals (MCNC) and silica aerogel (SA) were used as reinforcing agents and added to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) in different proportions to prepare composite films with excellent mechanical and barrier properties. After modification with citric acid, MCNC successfully contained ester bonds. SEM and FTIR results showed that MCNC and SA were uniformly dispersed in the PVA matrix and formed a compact structure. XRD results showed that there were physical interactions between the reinforcing agents and PVA, which improved the thermal stability of the film. Meanwhile, the composite film obtained good barrier properties after adding 0.5 % MCNC and 1.5 % SA. The carbon dioxide permeability decreased by 66.01 % and the oxygen permeability decreased by 69.46 % (23 °C, 50 % RH) and 40.14 % (38 °C, 90 % RH). The tensile strength increased to 43.79 MPa. Therefore, the composite film can be widely used in the packaging of food, medicine, etc.

ABSTRACT

In this study, chitosan(CS), nano-silicon aerogels(nSA) and tea polyphenols(TP) were used as film-forming materials and processed with ultrasonication to form films using the tape-casting method. The effects of ultrasonication time, temperature and frequency on the properties of CS/nSA/TP film were explored via material property testing. The results of response surface showed that the maximum tensile strength of the film was 4.036 MPa at ultrasonication time(57.97 min), temperature(37.26 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). The maximum elongation at break of the film was 279.42 % at ultrasonication time(60.88 min), temperature(39.93 °C) and frequency(30 kHz). Due to cavitation and super-mixing effects, ultrasonication may make the surface of the film smoother and easier to degrade. After ultrasonication, TPs were protected by the 3D network structure composed of CS and nSA. Ultrasonication improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the film. These results show that ultrasonication is an effective method to improve the properties of films.

ABSTRACT

As the spiritual homeland marker of modern urbanites, ancient villages have grown into popular tourist attractions. However, the existing literature lacks a conceptually valid and psychometrically sound scale to measure the existential value of ancient villages that meet the material and spiritual needs of tourists. Guided by the concept of genius loci in architectural phenomenology, this study developed and validated a scale to measure the genius loci of ancient villages from the perspective of tourists experience in the Chinese context. Following multistage scale development and validation procedures, tourists in two World Cultural Heritage ancient villages were sampled in two stages (Study 1, n = 214; Study 2, n = 228) to establish the psychometric properties of a genius loci scale. A three-dimensional (earthbound atmosphere, architectural culture, and spiritual homeland) genius loci measurement with 10 items was identified, and the scale showed good reliability and validity. This study extends the current ancient village tourism literature and provides a measurement tool for further investigation by academics and tourism professionals.

ABSTRACT

Molecular structure and functional properties of glycinin conjugated to κ-carrageenan and guar gum using a dry-heating method were comparatively analyzed. Glycosylation was confirmed by analyzing the degree of grafting, protein subunit composition, infrared absorption profile, and changes in contents of protein secondary structures. K-carrageenan was proven to possess a greater susceptibility to be grafted to glycinin than guar gum due to its relatively low molecular weight and negatively charged characteristics. The improvement of solubility by glycosylation with guar gum near the isoelectric point of glycinin was better than that by glycosylation with κ-carrageenan. Glycinin glycosylated with both polysaccharides exhibited enhanced emulsifying activity and stability. The enhanced apparent viscosity, elastic modulus, and viscous modulus also demonstrated that glycosylation promoted the appearance of stable elastic network structure. In summary, glycosylation with these two polysaccharides conferred glycinin superior emulsifying and rheological properties, and κ-carrageenan exhibited a better performance compared to guar gum.

ABSTRACT

Soybean protein isolate (SPI)-dextran conjugate-based nanogels were prepared via the Maillard reaction combined with protein self-assembly in this study. The dextran molecular weight (40 kDa), SPI/dextran mass ratio (1:1.75), and incubation time (3.3 d) for preparing SPI-dextran conjugate (SDC) were firstly optimized. The SDC was confirmed by analyzing the changes in protein composition and infrared absorption bands and showed loosened tertiary conformation, reduced surface hydrophobicity, decreased Z-average hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) and zeta potential, and improved emulsifying properties compared to the native SPI. Effects of conjugate concentration, pH, heating temperature, and time on Dh and polydispersity index were also evaluated. The SDC-based nanogels were translucent in aqueous solution and exhibited a spherical core-shell structure with a Dh of ∼104.4 nm and a good stability against thermal treatment, ionic strength, and storage. Results demonstrated the SDC-based nanogels possessed a potential to be used as desirable nanocarriers for encapsulating hydrophobic bioactive compounds.

In this work, chitosan/lignosulfonate composite micelles (CS-LS) were successfully prepared through polyelectrolyte self-assembly. Curcumin was encapsulated in CS-LS to obtain CUR-CS-LS. The results showed that the average diameter of CS-LS and CUR-CS-LS were 239 nm and 286 nm, respectively. The results show that the aromatic rings of lignosulfonate are assembled into the hydrophobic core of micelles through π-π interactions, and chitosan binds outside the hydrophobic core as a hydrophilic shell through electrostatic interactions. Curcumin is encapsulated in the hydrophobic core through hydrophobic interactions. Encapsulation improves the thermal stability and pH stability of curcumin. Compared with free curcumin, the retention efficiency of curcumin in CUR-CS-LS increased by approximately 6.66 and 6.46 times under the same heat treatment and pH conditions, respectively. Encapsulation also increases the antioxidant activity of curcumin in aqueous solution. In addition, the release mechanism of curcumin is diffusion and matrix swelling. These findings explain that CS-LS may be an effective promising delivery system for encapsulating hydrophobic biologically active substances.

ABSTRACT

Developing disaster tourism has become an important means of post-disaster recovery, but the relationship between attributes of quality of life (QOL) and residents' satisfaction toward newborn natural disaster destination (NNDD) development has not been explored. This study examines the asymmetric effects of QOL on residents' satisfaction using the dummy variable regression approach based on the Three-Factor Theory. A mixed-method approach was used to develop QOL scale, and a questionnaire was developed to survey 379 residents from China's Wenchuan. This study identifies the types (positive asymmetric, symmetric, and insignificant effect) of seven QOL attributes that influence residents' satisfaction. This study provides a valuable supplement to the literature on residents' QOL by focusing on the NNDD context, and is a pioneering attempt to apply the Three-Factor Theory from the perspective of local residents. Practically, some implications for policy optimization are proposed to help NNDD development.

ABSTRACT

Enzymatic hydrolysis and glycosylation were successively applied to modify soybean protein isolate (SPI) and rheological and textural properties of acid-induced SPI gel added with the obtained SPI hydrolysates and their glycosylated products were then investigated. The incorporation of SPI hydrolysates decreased the elastic modulus (G') and hardness of SPI gel, which might be related to the random aggregation between SPI hydrolysates and native SPI molecules via hydrophobic interactions. In addition, as the molecular weight of SPI hydrolysates decreased, the reduction in G' and hardness became more significant. Although glycosylation of SPI hydrolysates weakened the adverse effects of hydrolysates on the SPI gel formation to some extent, the glycosylated SPI hydrolysates were still unable to improve the gel quality compared with the control. However, results of this research may provide important information for understanding the influencing mechanism of SPI hydrolysates and their glycosylated products on the formation of SPI gel.

ABSTRACT

Influence of lyophilized okara with varying particle sizes (250-380, 150-180, 120-150, and < 75 µm) on the quality of glucono-δ-lactone-induced tofu was investigated. Adding okara significantly (p < 0.05) improved the yield, water-holding capacity, cooking loss, and nutritional value of the conventional tofu. The gel strength and sensory score of the okara-added tofu (OAT) increased with the decreasing of the particle size of okara, and these quality attributes of the OAT were better than those of the conventional tofu, except for the OAT with 250-380 µm okara. The microstructural profile of the OAT with reduced okara particle size was similar to that of the conventional tofu. Theoretically, the addition of okara mainly impacted the interactions among denatured proteins via disulfide bonding and hydrophobic interactions and the sizes of insoluble solid and oil droplet in soymilk, thereby affecting the formation of the gel network and finally the edible quality of tofu. In conclusion, the addition of okara with appropriate particle sizes can remarkably improve the processing quality and nutritional value of tofu, which is beneficial to the reasonable exploration of okara for the producers of soybean products.

Protein is an indispensable part of life. It provides nutrition for human body and flavor for food. The role of protein depends largely on the functional properties of the protein. Therefore, the elucidation of protein structure and functional properties needs to be further explored. The effects of structural and functional properties of proteins under different ultrasonic treatment conditions were reviewed. The structural changes of protein were studied by hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry combined with fluorescence spectrometry and proteomics, and the mechanism of action was determined. The glycation site, the glycation degree, and the glycation characteristics of different sugars were determined. The protein was modified by ultrasound, and the influence of protein structure, physicochemical properties, protein glycation characteristics, and the action mechanism were analyzed by biological mass spectrometry.

Arabinoxylan (AX) has many beneficial health effects that are closely related to its structural characteristics. The current study aimed to investigate the effects of molecular weight (Mw) and degree of substitution (DS) on the antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities of triticale bran AX and its hydrolysates in vitro. At low and similar Mw, the antioxidant activity of AX was inversely proportional to its DS. When DS was close, the antioxidant activity of AX was inversely proportional to its Mw at high DS, but the opposite result was found at low DS. As for the hypoglycemic performance, when DS was similar, the hypoglycemic activity of AX was proportional to its Mw. At low and similar Mw, the α-glucosidase inhibitory ability and glucose adsorption ability of AX was positively correlated with DS, whereas the α-amylase inhibitory ability and glucose delayed absorption ability showed the opposite results. Mw and DS had significant effects on the antioxidant and hypoglycemic activities of AX, and these two factors often need to be combined to explain the varied effects under different conditions.

ABSTRACT

The effect of arabinoxylan (AX) combined with ß-glucan and xyloglucan on lipid metabolism by regulating bile acids and gut microbiota was investigated in mice fed with high-fat diet. Fifty male ICR/KM mice were randomly divided into five groups: control diet (CON) group, high-fat diet (HFD) group, high-fat diet with AX (HFAX) group, high-fat diet with AX and ß-glucan (HFAB) group, and high-fat diet with AX and xyloglucan (HFAG) group. After 8 weeks of feeding, the mice were sacrificed and samples were collected. In contrast to CON, HFD disturbed lipid metabolism, bile acids, and gut microbiota in mice. Mice in HFD group had increase in weight, blood lipids and liver fat, and circulating bile acid as well as abnormal liver tissue morphology and disordered gut microbiota. Compared with HFD, HFAB and HFAG mice had reduced body weight and cholesterol and triglyceride levels; Fxr was activated, Cyp7a1 was inhibited to reduce bile acids, the microbial species diversity increased, the number of beneficial bacteria increased, and the number of conditional pathogenic bacteria decreased. HFAG uniquely activated intestinal bile acid receptors (Fxr and Tgr5) and increased the abundance of Bacteroidetes and Akkermansia. In summary, the effect of AX compounded glucans (ß-glucan or xyloglucan) on lipid metabolism was better than that of single AX by regulating bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota possibly due to the more complex chemical structure of combined polysaccharides.

ABSTRACT

Active edible films based on okara soluble dietary fiber (SDF), pectin, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMCNa) and thyme essential oil (TEO) were successfully prepared. We aimed to exploit biodegradable edible films and realize the full utilization of waste resources. The effects of different amounts of pectin on the properties and structural characterization of the composite film with or without TEO were studied using a solution casting evaporation method. In general, the addition of TEO can improve the properties of the composite membrane. Pectin was homogeneously distributed within the films and exhibited good interaction with the polymer matrix. The addition of pectin led to significantly higher mechanical and optical properties of the composite film, compared with SDF/CMC-Na composite film. The tensile strength reached 21.419 ± 2.22 MPa, and the minimum transparency reduced to 88.9% ± 0.42%, with increasing pectin. Notably, the water resistance and oil resistance were enhanced. The composite films also possessed satisfactory antioxidant activity, with a DPPH-free radical scavenging rate of 46.33% ± 0.72%, while antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria was not obvious. Antioxidant and antibacterial SDF/pectin/CMC-Na composite films with enhanced mechanical, optical and barrier properties are excellent candidates for active edible packaging.

The chitosan/okra powder/nano-silicon aerogel composite films were prepared by casting method and their physicochemical properties and structural characterization were studied. The results showed that the composite film had good mechanical properties, barrier properties and optical properties. The composite film has strong flexibility. The surface glossiness of C/D/S1.5:1:0.1 film was 14.4Gu. As for the antibacterial activity, all the composite films had strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus), and the inhibition zone of C/D/S1.5:1:0.10 against E. coli reached 551.96 mm2, the inhibition zone for S. aureus was 350.29 mm2. The composite film had uniform, non-porous, continuous and dense surface characteristics. The structural characterization confirmed that there was good compatibility between chitosan, okara powder and nano-silicon aerogel. In summary, the composite films had excellent performance and structure, which promoted the research of functional packaging films.

ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to evaluate the anti-hyperlipidemia ability of the dietary fiber extracted from okara in mice fed a high cholesterol diet. The dietary fiber was extracted from okara by combining fermentation with dynamic high-pressure microfluidization. An animal model was established to test the hypothesis that soluble dietary fiber, insoluble dietary fiber and total dietary fiber inhibit the fatty liver could be related to the total lipids and cholesterol including total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in the serum. Compared with mice fed with simvastatin, mice fed dietary fiber can significantly reduce their serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride, and atherogenic index whereas no significant effect on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was observed. Dietary fiber lowered a high level of liver total cholesterol and triglyceride. The dietary fiber extracted from okara might play an important role in the prevention of hyperlipidemia in high cholesterol mice and could be used as a natural supplement to a high cholesterol diet of functional food, due to the suppression of liver lipid synthesis.
