ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Given nurses' increasing international mobility, Asian internationally educated nurses (IENs) represent a critical human resource highly sought after within the global healthcare workforce. Developed countries have grown excessively reliant on them, leading to heightened competition among these countries. Hence, this review aims to uncover factors underlying the retention of Asian IENs in host countries to facilitate the development of more effective staff retention strategies. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for mixed-method systematic review. A search was undertaken across the following electronic databases for studies published in English during 2013-2022: CINAHL, Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and PsycINFO. Two of the researchers critically appraised included articles independently using the Joanna Briggs Critical Appraisal Tools and Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (version 2018). A data-based convergent integrated approach was adopted for data synthesis. RESULTS: Of the 27 included articles (19 qualitative and eight quantitative), five each were conducted in Asia (Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia), Australia and Europe (Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom); four each in the United States and the Middle East (Saudi Arabia and Kuwait); two in Canada; and one each in New Zealand and South Africa. Five themes emerged from the data synthesis: (1) desire for better career prospects, (2) occupational downward mobility, (3) inequality in career advancement, (4) acculturation and (5) support system. CONCLUSION: This systematic review investigated the factors influencing AMN retention and identified several promising retention strategies: granting them permanent residency, ensuring transparency in credentialing assessment, providing equal opportunities for career advancement, instituting induction programmes for newly employed Asian IENs, enabling families to be with them and building workplace social support. Retention strategies that embrace the Asian IENs' perspectives and experiences are envisioned to ensure a sustainable nursing workforce.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by irreversible damage to renal function. For patients undergoing replacement therapies like hemodialysis (HD), the pain caused by arteriovenous fistula (AVF) cannulation becomes a significant aspect of their daily lives. This study aimed to examine the impact of virtual reality (VR) distraction techniques on the pain experienced during AVF needle insertion in patients undergoing HD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized clinical trial (RCT) recruited a total of 60 patients undergoing HD from the 9 Dey Hospital in Torbat Heydariyeh, Iran, between March and August 2022. These patients were then divided into two groups: the intervention group and the control group. The intervention group received distraction techniques using the Shinecon 4th Gen Virtual Reality Headset, while the control group received routine care services. To assess the level of pain experienced during AVF cannulation, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was utilized. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS20. Various statistical tests, including the Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test, Multiple linear regression, and independent-samples t-test, were employed for data analysis. Additionally, Cohen's d was used to determine the effect size of the intervention. RESULTS: The analysis of the data revealed a statistically significant difference in the mean (SD) pain scores between the control group (7.6 ± 0.8) and the intervention group (5.1 ± 0.9) (p < 0.002 after Bonferroni correction). Furthermore, it was observed that a majority of patients in the intervention group reported experiencing moderate pain, whereas the control group experienced more severe pain. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings demonstrated that the use of virtual reality (VR) was effective in reducing the intensity of pain experienced during AVF needle insertion in patients undergoing HD. Based on these results, it is recommended to incorporate VR as a routine practice in the HD department of the hospital. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study, with the code no. IRCT20180429039463N3, was registered on the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials on 28/03/2022.

ABSTRACT

Migratoriness in birds is evolutionary labile, with many examples of increasing or decreasing migration distances on the timescale of modern ornithology. In contrast, shifts of migration to more nearby wintering grounds seem to be a slow process. We examine the history of how Palearctic migratory landbirds have expanded their wintering ranges to include both tropical Africa and Asia, a process that has involved major shifts in migratory routes. We found that species with shorter migration distances and with resident populations in the Palearctic more often winter in both Africa and Asia. Our results suggest that changes in wintering grounds are not by long-distance migrant populations per se, but through historic intermediate populations that were less migratory from which long-distance migration evolved secondarily. The failure of long-distance migrants to shift migration direction to more nearby winter quarters indicates that major modifications to the migratory program may be difficult to evolve.

BACKGROUND: Living with a chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) requires medications and therapies, as well as long-term follow-up with multidisciplinary clinical teams. Patient involvement in the shared decision-making process on medication regimens is an important element in promoting medication adherence. Literature review and needs assessment showed the viability of technology-based interventions to equip patients with knowledge about chronic illness and competencies to improve their adherence to medications. Thus, a web-based intervention was developed to empower patients living with RA to adhere to their disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) medication regimen. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discuss the intervention mapping process in the design of a web-based intervention that supports patient empowerment to medication adherence and to evaluate its feasibility among patients living with RA. METHODS: The theory-based Patient Empowerment to Medication Adherence Programme (PE2MAP) for patients with RA was built upon the Zimmerman Psychological Empowerment framework, a web-based program launched through the Udemy website. PE2MAP was developed using a 6-step intervention mapping process: (1) needs assessment, (2) program objectives, (3) conceptual framework to guide the intervention, (4) program plan, (5) adoption, and (6) evaluation involving multidisciplinary health care professionals (HCPs) and a multimedia team. PE2MAP is designed as a 4-week web-based intervention program with a complementary RA handbook. A feasibility randomized controlled trial was completed on 30 participants from the intervention group who are actively taking DMARD medication for RA to test the acceptability and feasibility of the PE2MAP. RESULTS: The mean age and disease duration of the 30 participants were 52.63 and 8.50 years, respectively. The feasibility data showed 87% (n=26) completed the 4-week web-based PE2MAP intervention, 57% (n=17) completed all 100% of the contents, and 27% (n=8) completed 96% to 74% of the contents, indicating the overall feasibility of the intervention. As a whole, 96% (n=24) of the participants found the information on managing the side effects of medications, keeping fit, managing flare-ups, and monitoring joint swelling/pain/stiffness as the most useful contents of the intervention. In addition, 88% (n=23) and 92% (n=24) agreed that the intervention improved their adherence to medications and management of their side effects, including confidence in communicating with their health care team, respectively. The dos and do nots of traditional Chinese medicine were found by 96% (n=25) to be useful. Goal setting was rated as the least useful skill by 6 (23.1%) of the participants. CONCLUSIONS: The web-based PE2MAP intervention was found to be acceptable, feasible, and effective as a web-based tool to empower patients with RA to manage and adhere to their DMARD medications. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials are warranted to explore the effectiveness of this intervention in the management of patients with RA.

Introducción: el nivel socioeconómico (NSE) de las familias tiene un papel fundamentan en el desempeño académico de los estudiantes. Durante la pandemia, las familias con NSE bajo tuvieron menores oportunidades y se acrecentaron las desigualdades por limitaciones económicas y técnicas, lo cual pudo haber influido en las calificaciones y rendimiento académico de los alumnos. Objetivo: identificar la relación entre el NSE y el rendimiento académico de un grupo de estudiantes de licenciatura en enfermería durante la pandemia COVID-19. Metodología: estudio transversal, cuantitativo, analítico, con alumnos que tuvieron educación a distancia, se utilizó el instrumento denominado Nivel Socioeconómico (NSE) de la Asociación Mexicana de Agencias de Inteligencia de Mercado y Opinión Pública (AMAI), así como los promedios del semestre cursado en línea Resultados: participaron 167 alumnos, entre las variables de rendimiento académico y nivel socioeconómico se obtuvo un valor de p = 0.961, para las variables de sexo y estado civil se encontró asociación con un valor de p < 0.05. Conclusiones: no se identificó ninguna relación entre las variables del rendimiento académico y el nivel socioeconómico; sin embargo, otras variables como estado civil y sexo dieron significancia estadística, por lo que se sugiere ahondar en estas variables, así como su relación con el rendimiento académico.


Introduction: The socioeconomic level (SES) of families has a fundamental role in the academic performance of students, during the pandemic families with a low SES had fewer opportunities and increased inequalities due to economic and technical limitations, which could influence grades and academic performance. of the students Objective: To identify th e relationship between the SES and aca demic performance of nursing undergraduate students during COVID-19. Methodology: Cross-sectional, quantitative, analytical study with students who had distance education, the instrument called Socioeconomic Level (NSE) of the Mexican Association of Market Intelligence Agencies and Public Opinion (AMAI) was used. and the averages of the semester completed online. Results: 167 students participated, between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level a value of p = 0.961 was obtained, for the variables of sex, marital status an association was found with a p value less than 0.05. Conclusions: No relationship was identified between the variables of academic performance and socioeconomic level, however, other variables such as marital status and sex gave statistical significance, so it is suggested to delve into these variables as well as their relationship with academic performance.

ABSTRACT

It is a long-standing view that the main mechanism maintaining narrow migratory divides in passerines is the selection against intermediate and suboptimal migratory direction, but empirical proof of this is still lacking. We present novel results from a willow warbler migratory divide in central Sweden from where birds take the typical SW and SE as well as intermediate routes to winter quarters in Africa. We hypothesized that individuals that take the intermediate route are forced to migrate in daytime more often when crossing wide ecological barriers than birds that follow the typical western or eastern flyways. Analyses of geolocator tracks of willow warblers breeding across the entire Sweden, including the migratory divide, provided no support for our hypothesis. Instead, birds that migrated along the western flyway were the most likely to undertake full day flights. The probability of migrating for a full day when crossing major barriers declined linearly from west to east. We speculate that this difference is possibly caused by more challenging conditions in the western part of the Sahara Desert, such as the lack of suitable day-time roost sites. However, it may equally likely be that willow warblers benefit from migrating in daytime if favorable tailwinds offer assistance.

AIM: To map and explore primary research about factors related to retention, turnover and turnover intention among migrant nurses. BACKGROUND: Understanding retention and turnover among migrant nurses is essential, especially in the context of nursing shortage. There is a range of factors motivating nurses to emigrate; however, factors related to retention and turnover among migrant nurses in the host country are unclear. METHODS: This review utilised Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework for scoping reviews, and is reported with the PRISMA-ScR checklist. Four electronic databases were searched-CINAHL, PsycINFO, ProQuest and PubMed-to identify primary research published between January 2000 and May 2022. Titles and abstracts were reviewed against the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and then full-text versions were reviewed. Data extracted were summarised, and results synthesised. RESULTS: Fifteen studies were included, with studies mainly from the Middle East, the United Kingdom and the United States. Personal, organisational, financial, political and environmental factors were found to influence retention and turnover among migrant nurses. CONCLUSION: Retention and turnover rates among migrant nurses vary among host countries. The factors identified are related to each other; hence, retention and turnover among migrant nurses are best understood in the context of their source country, host country and individual circumstances. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING POLICY, SOCIAL POLICY, AND HEALTH POLICY: Host countries must promote strategies that foster retention, such as reviewing immigration policies to support long-term immigration and family unity. Organisations employing migrant nurses need to consider the presence of a social network to facilitate adaptation and integration. It is also recommended that source countries address the reasons for emigration and initiate policies encouraging return migration, including providing merit to overseas experience. International nursing organisations should call for an examination of the conditions of migrant nurses to ensure equality across all source countries.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy is associated with a wide range of physical and psychological side effects, so complementary and alternative therapies may be practiced as an independent treatment or combined with the standard ones to improve health-related quality of life of cancer patients. Laughter yoga has predominantly been used as a complementary therapy to enhance health and wellbeing of ordinary people and patients with chronic diseases. However, to date, few studies have evaluated the effects of this modern exercise on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in clinical settings, to the best of the authors' knowledge. the present study aimed to investigate the effects of Laughter Yoga on the health-related quality of life of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: This study was a two-group randomized clinical trial on 69 cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at Reza Radiotherapy and Oncology Center, Iran in 2018. Patients were randomly divided into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received laughter yoga for four sessions at one-week intervals. Each session consists of one part and lasts for 20-30 min. Patients' health-related quality of life was assessed before and after the laughter yoga sessions using Quality of Life Questionnaire European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC QLQ-C30) version 3.0. SPSS Statistics (v.20 software was used to conduct Chi-square, independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon and paired t-tests analyses of the data. RESULTS: The number of participants in intervention and control groups were 34 and 35, there was no significant difference of demographic and disease related characteristics and pre-intervention HRQOL between two groups. In the intervention group, there is significant difference between pre- and post-intervention scores (Mean ± Standard Deviation) of emotional functioning (12.99 ± 10.49), physical functioning (0.78 ± 6.08), role functioning (3.43 ± 7.97), fatigue (-8.82 ± 22.01), pain (-8.33 ± 11.78), sleep disturbance (-15.68 ± 18.77), and global health and quality of life (6.37 ± 5.04) (p < 0.05). There was no significant change in the control group. Participants reported no adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: A structured laughter yoga intervention in a hospital setting effectively improved health-related quality of life for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Benefits to many patients could be expected if this would become a part of routine care. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This study was registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (no. IRCT20180429039463N1) on 21/08/2018.

ABSTRACT

Nursing students' stress, protective factors (e.g. resilience, social support, mindfulness and self-efficacy) and psychological well-being (PWB) have been well reported in the literature. However, the interactions of these variables were scarcely examined in the latter part of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the context of a developing country. This cross-sectional correlational study complying with STROBE guidelines tested a hypothetical model of the interrelationships of nursing students' stress, protective factors and PWB using structural equation modelling (SEM). Nursing students (n = 776) from five nursing schools in the Philippines were conveniently recruited from September 2022 to January 2023. Six validated self-report scales (Perceived Stress Scale, Multi-dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and Psychological Wellbeing Scale) were used to collect data. SEM, mediation analyses and path analyses were used for data analysis. The emerging model demonstrated acceptable model fit parameters. Stress negatively impacted protective factors, while all the protective factors positively influenced PWB. Social support mediated the influence of stress on resilience, mindfulness and PWB. Resilience is a significant mediator of stress, self-efficacy, social support and PWB. Mindfulness mediated the influence of stress, social support and self-efficacy on PWB. Finally, self-efficacy had a mediating role between resilience and mindfulness. Nursing institutions and nurse educators can use the proposed model as their basis for empirical and theoretical evidence in creating programmes that will strengthen nursing students' protective factors, thus reducing stress while improving PWB and learning outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Academic mentorship usually involves an ongoing, supportive relationship between experienced academics and research candidates, and is fundamental to establishing and nurturing scholarship and the skills for dealing with the changing demands of the academic environment. Mentoring is a valuable strategy for the development of students enrolled in doctoral nursing programs (Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing - PhD, Doctor of Nursing Practice - DNP, Doctor of Nursing Science - DNS, and Doctoral Education in Nursing - EdD). PURPOSE: To report mentorship experiences among doctoral nursing students and academic mentors, identify positive and negative attributes of mentors and the relationship between mentors and students, and assess the benefits and barriers of mentoring. METHODS: Relevant empirical studies published until September 2021 were identified using PubMed, CINAHL and Scopus electronic databases. Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method studies published in English language which reported on mentorship among doctoral nursing students were included. Data were synthesized into a scoping review with findings presented as a narrative summary. RESULTS: The review included 30 articles, mostly from the USA, which reported on the mentoring relationship, experiences, benefits, and barriers of mentoring for the student and the mentor. Students valued mentor attributes such as being a role model, respectful, supportive, inspiring, approachable, accessible, a content expert and a good communicator. Benefits of mentoring included enhanced experience of research endeavours, scholarly writing and scientific publication, networking support, improved student retention, timely completion of the project, and career readiness, as well as developing one's own mentoring skills for future mentoring of others. Despite the identified benefits, there are a number of barriers related to mentoring including access to mentorship support, limited mentoring skills among faculty, and lack of compatibility between students and mentors. CONCLUSIONS: This review highlighted students' expectations versus their reality of mentoring, which suggested areas for improvement in mentoring doctoral nursing students, in particular the need for mentorship competency, support, and compatibility. Additionally, there is a need for more robust research designs to understand the nature and characteristics of mentorship programs for doctoral nursing students and to assess the expectations and wider experiences of mentors.

OBJECTIVE: Strong empirical research has shown a relationship between body dissatisfaction and symptoms of eating disorders (ED) and the direct and combined influence of emotional factors and dimensions of emotional intelligence (EI) on ED symptoms. However, whether these emotional variables and competencies moderate the well-established relationship between body dissatisfaction and ED symptomatology has not yet been tested. Neither have studies of this nature been performed among high at-risk populations such as Mexican female adolescents. Thus, this research aimed to explore the moderator role of EI subdimensions in the relationship between body dissatisfaction and ED symptoms among female adolescents from Sinaloa, Mexico. METHODS: A total of 485 female adolescents aged 14-19 years old (M = 16.81, SD = 1.33) who were students in middle school, high school, and college completed questionnaires about body dissatisfaction, ED symptomatology, and EI. We conducted moderating analyses. RESULTS: Subdimensions of EI significantly moderated the relationship between body dissatisfaction and symptoms of ED. For participants high in body dissatisfaction, lower levels in stress management ability and higher levels in the interpersonal EI and Adaptability EI dimensions were associated with higher levels of ED symptomatology. DISCUSSION: Subdimensions of EI have an important role in moderating the association between body dissatisfaction and symptoms of ED. The findings of this study contribute to improving the knowledge about the role of emotional competencies in ED. Proposals for future research and to improve preventative approaches are discussed. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This study shows the moderating role of EI dimensions in the well-established relationship between body dissatisfaction and ED symptomatology. The research was conducted with a population at high risk of ED: female adolescents in the northwest of Mexico. Results showed that low Stress management EI, high Adaptability EI, and high Interpersonal EI were associated with higher levels of ED symptomatology among participants with high (but not low) body dissatisfaction. These insightful results have theoretical and practical implications.

BACKGROUND: Oncology nurses have frequent contact with oncology patients during their cancer journey. This long-term, recurrent contact can impact the health and well-being of the nurse through the development of compassion fatigue (CF). OBJECTIVES: To identify what contributes to CF and what individual, interpersonal, and organizational factors mitigate CF among oncology nurses caring for adult patients. METHODS: A scoping review framework by Arksey and O'Malley guided this review. Electronic databases were searched for relevant studies. A blinded screening process was undertaken by the authors using the following inclusion criteria: English language published from January 2011 to December 2021, primary research peer-reviewed studies, and focusing on CF within oncology nurses caring for adult patients in any practice setting. RESULTS: Nineteen studies (21 articles) were identified. The review found nurses' personal beliefs around nursing care being provided, and personality traits of psychological inflexibility, neuroticism, passive coping, and avoidance contributed to CF. Workplace conflict and lack of a healthy work-life balance also contributed to CF. However, nurses' personal resilience, ability to positively reflect upon their work, a supportive team environment, and continuing education were found to mitigate CF. CONCLUSIONS: Levels of CF vary among oncology nurses caring for adult patients. Oncology nurses may benefit from personal and organizational resources aimed at improving oncology nurses' professional quality of life while decreasing CF. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Consideration and future research of effective interventions are needed to sustain a future health workforce and mitigate CF among oncology nurses.

ABSTRACT

Migratory routes and remote wintering quarters in birds are often species and even population specific. It has been known for decades that songbirds mainly migrate solitarily, and that the migration direction is genetically controlled. Yet, the underlying genetic mechanisms remain unknown. To investigate the genetic basis of migration direction, we track genotyped willow warblers Phylloscopus trochilus from a migratory divide in Sweden, where South-West migrating, and South-East migrating subspecies form a hybrid swarm. We find evidence that migration direction follows a dominant inheritance pattern with epistatic interaction between two loci explaining 74% of variation. Consequently, most hybrids migrate similarly to one of the parental subspecies, and therefore do not suffer from the cost of following an inferior, intermediate route. This has significant implications for understanding the selection processes that maintain narrow migratory divides.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is common in intensive care patients. Understanding the accuracy of simple, feasible sleep measurement techniques is essential to informing their possible role in usual clinical care. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate whether sleep monitoring techniques such as actigraphy (ACTG), behavioural assessments, and patient surveys are comparable with polysomnography (PSG) in accurately reporting sleep quantity and quality among conscious, intensive care patients. METHODS: An observational study was conducted in 20 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for a minimum duration of 24 h, who underwent concurrent sleep monitoring via PSG, ACTG, nursing-based observations, and self-reported assessment using the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire. RESULTS: The reported total sleep time (TST) for the 20 participants measured by PSG was 328.2 min (±106 min) compared with ACTG (362.4 min [±62.1 min]; mean difference = 34.22 min [±129 min]). Bland-Altman analysis indicated that PSG and ACTG demonstrated clinical agreement and did not perform differently across a number of sleep variables including TST, awakening, sleep-onset latency, and sleep efficiency. Nursing observations overestimated sleep duration compared to PSG TST (mean difference = 9.95 ± 136.3 min, p > 0.05), and patient-reported TST was underestimated compared to PSG TST (mean difference = -51.81 ± 144.1 7, p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Amongst conscious patients treated in the ICU, sleep characteristics measured by ACTG were similar to those measured by PSG. ACTG may provide a clinically feasible and acceptable proxy approach to sleep monitoring in conscious ICU patients.

ABSTRACT

Background: Our study aimed to explore the experiences of stakeholders from local government units, health facilities and higher education institutions on the delivery of non-COVID-19 health services after the initial wave of the pandemic. Methods: Twenty-nine public health workers, thirteen university staff, and four hospital administrators in the Philippines participated. Using a descriptive phenomenological approach, we analysed transcripts from six focus group discussions conducted online between March and June 2021. Findings: The COVID-19 pandemic made the routine health programs inaccessible due to hesitancy among patients to visit health facilities, a shift in public health priorities, and lack of students to augment the existing workforce.Public health workers reported stress and mental health exhaustion. Apart from fear of infection during service provision, public health workers and university staff experienced work overload, pressure to learn new technology, and webinar fatigue. Mental health problems have surfaced as health workers and young people have become more affected while support services remain insufficient.Public health workers have reported actions to maintain service delivery in the new normal such as use of telehealth and social media. However, issues on workforce wellbeing and digital equity posed adaptation challenges. Participants suggested partnership with higher education institutions as pivotal to position local health systems towards recovery. Interpretation: The rapid change in the service landscape highlights the importance of sustainable partnerships, effective workforce management, equitable digital innovations, and promoting mental wellbeing to preserve community, school, and occupational health and rebuild resilient local health systems in low-resourced areas. Introduction: A good working climate increases the chances of adequate care. The employees of Emergency in Hospitals are particularly exposed to work-related stress. Support from management is very important in order to avoid stressful situations and conflicts that are not conducive to good work organization. The aim of the study was to assess the work climate of Emergency Health Services during COVID-19 Pandemic using the Abridged Version of the Work Climate Scale in Emergency Health Services. Design: A prospective descriptive international study was conducted. Methods: The 24-item Abridged Version of the Work Climate Scale in Emergency Health Services was used for the study. The questionnaire was posted on the internet portal of scientific societies. In the study participated 217 women (74.5%) and 74 men (25.4%). The age of the respondents ranged from 23 to 60 years (SD = 8.62). Among the re-spondents, the largest group were Emergency technicians (85.57%), followed by nurses (9.62%), doctors (2.75%) and Service assistants (2.06%). The study was conducted in 14 countries. Results: The study of the climate at work shows that countries have different priorities at work, but not all of them. By answering the research questions one by one, we can say that the average climate score at work was 33.41 min 27.0 and max 36.0 (SD = 1.52). Conclusion: The working climate depends on many factors such as interpersonal relationships, remuneration or the will to achieve the same selector. In the absence of any of the elements, a proper working climate is not possible.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is one of the 21st century's most challenging clinical and public health issues. However, this health issue remains underreported in the Philippines. AIM: This study examined Filipinos' knowledge, attitude, and awareness regarding antibiotic use and resistance and the associated predictive variables of antibiotic resistance. METHODS: A cross-sectional design and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines were used in this study. Convenience sampling of 3767 participants completed the Eurobarometer survey on antibiotic resistance from October 2021 to February 2022. χ2 and regression analysis were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: Most participants were familiar with the popular types of available antibiotics. Males and healthcare workers had a higher percentage of correct responses on antibiotic resistance knowledge. Participants had moderate to high knowledge levels of antibiotic resistance. Age, educational attainment, profession, antibiotic use in the previous year, and household members taking antibiotics were significant predictors of the level of knowledge of antibiotic resistance. There was a significant difference in participants' sex, age, and educational attainment in their attitudes toward acquisition, hygienic practices, and the role of health professionals in antibiotic resistance. CONCLUSION: Government agencies and policymakers should consider the identified predictors when establishing policies on antibiotic resistance. This will ensure that antibiotic use is safe and effective.

Objectives: Post-term pregnancy is a condition associated with increased maternal and fetal complications. Administration of castor oil causes cervical stimulation by increasing the production of prostaglandins. We examined the effects of castor oil on cervical ripening and labor induction through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: The search process was performed to obtain relevant articles from databases including Pubmed, Cochrane library, Scopus, Science direct, SID, Iran Medex, and Google Scholar using the English keywords of cervical ripening, post-term, castor oil, labor induction, Bishop score, and pregnancy considering all possible combinations without time constraints and their Persian equivalents from national databases. Results: A total of eight related articles from the 19 primary studies were extracted and systematically reviewed. According to a cumulative chart, the difference in the post-intervention Bishop score was statistically significant (standard mean difference [SMD] 1.64, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.67-2.11, p = 0.001), indicating an effect of castor oil on increasing the Bishop score. In addition, the difference in labor induction was statistically significant after the intervention (odds ratio 11.67, 95% CI 3.34-40.81, p = 0.001), indicating an effect of castor oil on increasing the odds ratio of labor induction (experience of vaginal delivery). Conclusion: This meta-analysis showed that oral administration of castor oil is effective for cervical ripening and labor induction. Midwives should closely monitor pregnant women with prolonged labor and collaborate with obstetricians to employ castor oil as a safe intervention to induce cervical ripening and labor to prevent undue caesarean surgery.

Rapidly ageing populations are putting a strain on healthcare due to their increasing chronic conditions and complex comorbidities. Community care is an important part of the healthcare system and community healthcare workers are under pressure to care for the growing ageing population. It is crucial to recruit healthcare workers in community care to address the ageing population. This study aimed to explore the nursing students' experiences in community care through their participation in a community collaborative programme. An exploratory qualitative study with purposive sampling was used. Thirty nursing undergraduate students who attended a 1-year Community Collaborative Programme, conceptualised by incorporating the IPE collaborative patient-centred practice conceptual framework, participated. Five focus group discussions were conducted using a semi-structured interview guide. Participants reflected on how their experiences influenced their perception of community care and their views on collaborative learning within an interprofessional team. Thematic analysis was used for the data analysis in this study. Four themes emerged from the data, namely (i) appreciating community care, (ii) developing community practice competence, (iii) valuing collaborative learning and (iv) managing constraints and barriers. Guidance from mentors during CCP allowed participants to develop the competencies needed to care for the ageing population, value interprofessional collaboration and manage constraints and barriers pertaining to community care. The participants understood the challenges and gained a deeper appreciation for community care. A non-hierarchal interprofessional relationship will prepare future nurses to meet the emerging healthcare need in the community, and will be beneficial to be included in future clinical curriculum.
