ABSTRACT

Topologically ordered phases of matter can host fractionalized excitations known as "anyons," which obey neither Bose nor Fermi statistics. Despite forming the basis for topological quantum computation, experimental access to these exotic phases has been very limited. We present a new route toward realizing fractionalized topological phases by literally building on unfractionalized phases, which are much more easily realized experimentally. Our approach involves a Kondo lattice model in which a gapped electronic system of noninteracting fermions is coupled to local moments via the exchange interaction. Using general entanglement-based arguments and explicit lattice models, we show that gapped spin liquids can be induced in the spin system, and we demonstrate the power of this "topological bootstrap" by realizing chiral and Z2 spin liquids. This technique enables the realization of many long sought-after fractionalized phases of matter.

ABSTRACT

We study the effects of a topological Theta term on 2+1-dimensional principal chiral models, which are nonlinear sigma models defined on Lie group manifolds. We find that when Θ=π, the nature of the disordered phase of the principal chiral model is strongly affected by the topological term: it is either a gapless conformal field theory, or it is gapped and twofold degenerate. The result of our Letter can be used to analyze the boundary states of three-dimensional symmetry protected topological phases.

ABSTRACT

We consider (2+1)-dimensional topological quantum states which possess edge states described by a chiral (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory, such as, e.g., a general quantum Hall state. We demonstrate that for such states the reduced density matrix of a finite spatial region of the gapped topological state is a thermal density matrix of the chiral edge state conformal field theory which would appear at the spatial boundary of that region. We obtain this result by applying a physical instantaneous cut to the gapped system and by viewing the cutting process as a sudden "quantum quench" into a conformal field theory, using the tools of boundary conformal field theory. We thus provide a demonstration of the observation made by Li and Haldane about the relationship between the entanglement spectrum and the spectrum of a physical edge state.

ABSTRACT

Noncollinear magnetic order is typically characterized by a tetrad ground state manifold (GSM) of three perpendicular vectors or nematic directors. We study three types of tetrad orders in two spatial dimensions, whose GSMs are SO(3) = S(3)/Z(2), S(3)/Z(4), and S(3)/Q(8), respectively. Q(8) denotes the non-Abelian quaternion group with eight elements. We demonstrate that after quantum disordering these three types of tetrad orders, the systems enter fully gapped liquid phases described by Z(2), Z(4), and non-Abelian quaternion gauge field theories, respectively. The latter case realizes Kitaev's non-Abelian toric code in terms of a rather simple spin-1 SU(2) quantum magnet. This non-Abelian topological phase possesses a 22-fold ground state degeneracy on the torus arising from the 22 representations of the Drinfeld double of Q(8).

ABSTRACT

Quantum mechanical systems, whose degrees of freedom are so-called su(2)k anyons, form a bridge between ordinary SU(2) quantum magnets (of arbitrary spin-S) and systems of interacting non-Abelian anyons. Anyonic spin-1/2 chains exhibit a topological protection mechanism that stabilizes their gapless ground states and which vanishes only in the limit (k-->infinity) of the ordinary spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain. For anyonic spin-1 chains the phase diagram closely mirrors the one of the biquadratic SU(2) spin-1 chain. Our results describe, at the same time, nucleation of different 2D topological quantum fluids within a "parent" non-Abelian quantum Hall state, arising from a macroscopic occupation with localized, interacting anyons. The edge states between the "nucleated" and the parent liquids are neutral, and correspond precisely to the gapless modes of the anyonic chains.

ABSTRACT

We study topological phases of time-reversal invariant singlet superconductors in three spatial dimensions. In these systems the topological phases are characterized by an even-numbered winding number nu. At the surface the topological properties of this quantum state manifest themselves through the presence of nu flavors of gapless Dirac fermion surface states, which are robust against localization from random impurities. We construct a lattice tight-binding model that realizes a topologically nontrivial phase, in which nu=+/-2. Disorder corresponds to a (nonlocalizing) random SU(2) gauge potential for the surface Dirac fermions, leading to a power-law density of states rho() approximately ;{1/7}. The bulk effective field theory is proposed to be the (3+1)-dimensional SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with a theta term at theta=pi.

ABSTRACT

We show that chains of interacting Fibonacci anyons can support a wide variety of collective ground states ranging from extended critical, gapless phases to gapped phases with ground-state degeneracy and quasiparticle excitations. In particular, we generalize the Majumdar-Ghosh Hamiltonian to anyonic degrees of freedom by extending recently studied pairwise anyonic interactions to three-anyon exchanges. The energetic competition between two- and three-anyon interactions leads to a rich phase diagram that harbors multiple critical and gapped phases. For the critical phases and their higher symmetry end points we numerically establish descriptions in terms of two-dimensional conformal field theories. A topological symmetry protects the critical phases and determines the nature of gapped phases.

ABSTRACT

We discuss generalizations of quantum spin Hamiltonians using anyonic degrees of freedom. The simplest model for interacting anyons energetically favors neighboring anyons to fuse into the trivial ("identity") channel, similar to the quantum Heisenberg model favoring neighboring spins to form spin singlets. Numerical simulations of a chain of Fibonacci anyons show that the model is critical with a dynamical critical exponent z=1, and described by a two-dimensional (2D) conformal field theory with central charge c=7/10. An exact mapping of the anyonic chain onto the 2D tricritical Ising model is given using the restricted-solid-on-solid representation of the Temperley-Lieb algebra. The gaplessness of the chain is shown to have topological origin.

ABSTRACT

Triangular symmetry stabilizes a novel non-Fermi-liquid phase in the three-impurity Kondo model with frustrating antiferromagnetic interactions between half-integer impurity spins. The phase arises without fine-tuning of couplings, and is stable against magnetic fields and particle-hole symmetry breaking. We find a conformal field theory describing this phase, verify it using the numerical renormalization group, and extract various exact, universal low-energy properties. Signatures predicted in electrical transport may be testable in scanning tunneling microscopy or quantum-dot experiments.
