ABSTRACT

Cut vertices and cut edges are valuable for analyzing connectivity problems in classical graph theory. However, they cannot deal with certain fuzzy problems. In order to solve this problem, this paper introduces the definitions of fuzzy strong cut vertices and fuzzy strong cut edges, and characterizes fuzzy strong cut vertices and fuzzy strong cut edges in fuzzy trees, complete fuzzy graphs, and fuzzy cycles. Finally, practical applications verify the effectiveness of the theory in network stability analysis.

ABSTRACT

Iron minerals are widespread in earth's surface water and soil. Recent studies have revealed that under sunlight irradiation, iron minerals are photoactive on producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), a group of key species in regulating elemental cycling, microbe inactivation, and pollutant degradation. In nature, iron minerals exhibit varying crystallinity under different hydrogeological conditions. While crystallinity is a known key parameter determining the overall activity of iron minerals, the impact of iron mineral crystallinity on photochemical ROS production remains unknown. Here, we assessed the photochemical ROS production from ferrihydrites with different degrees of crystallinity. All examined ferrihydrites demonstrated photoactivity under irradiation, resulting in the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radical (•OH). The photochemical ROS production from ferrihydrites increased with decreasing ferrihydrite crystallinity. The crystallinity-dependent photochemical •OH production was primarily attributed to conduction band reduction reactions, with the reduction of O2 by conduction band electrons being the rate-limiting key process. Conversely, the crystallinity of iron minerals had a negligible influence on photon-to-electron conversion efficiency or surface Fenton-like activity. The difference in ROS productions led to a discrepant degradation efficiency of organic pollutants on iron mineral surfaces. Our study provides valuable insights into the crystallinity-dependent ROS productions from iron minerals in natural systems, emphasizing the significance of iron mineral photochemistry in natural sites with abundant lower-crystallinity iron minerals such as wetland water and surface soils.

ABSTRACT

This randomized controlled study assessed the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary impact of the PrEP iT! mHealth intervention designed to improve PrEP adherence among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). A national sample of 80 YMSM in the U.S. (Mage = 25 years; 54% racial/ethnic minority), recruited through social media ads, were randomized to either the PrEP iT! or usual PrEP care conditions. Participants completed online surveys and submitted self-collected dried blood sample (DBS) data as measures of PrEP adherence. Differences in PrEP adherence across treatment arms and between participants with high versus low engagement in PrEP iT! were assessed. Retention was high at the three (94%) and six (93%) month assessment, and participants in PrEP iT! reported satisfactory acceptability of the intervention. There were no significant differences in self-reported or DBS-derived PrEP adherence between randomized groups. However, YMSM in the PrEP iT! group with high PrEP adherence (the equivalent of four or more doses/week through self-report and DBS-derived measures) demonstrated significantly higher engagement in the intervention than those with low PrEP adherence (the equivalent of 3 or fewer doses/week). Overall, the PrEP iT! intervention demonstrated strong feasibility and acceptability. The finding that high PrEP iT! intervention engagement was associated with protective levels of PrEP adherence suggests it is a viable adherence support tool that should be further evaluated in definitive trial among YMSM who need basic support, or as part of a more comprehensive adherence support package for those who need greater assistance.Trial registration Clinical Trials # NCT04509076 (registered August 10, 2020).

ABSTRACT

Insects harbor a remarkable diversity of gut microbiomes critical for host survival, health, and fitness, but the mechanism of this structured symbiotic community remains poorly known, especially for the insect group consisting of many closely related species that inhabit the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Here, we firstly analyzed population-level 16S rRNA microbial dataset, comprising 11 Parnassius species covering 5 subgenera, from 14 populations mostly sampled in mountainous regions across northwestern-to-southeastern China, and meanwhile clarified the relative importance of multiple factors on gut microbial community structure and evolution. Our findings indicated that both host genetics and larval host plant modulated gut microbial diversity and community structure. Moreover, the effect analysis of host genetics and larval diet on gut microbiomes showed that host genetics played a critical role in governing the gut microbial beta diversity and the symbiotic community structure, while larval host plant remarkably influenced the functional evolution of gut microbiomes. These findings of the intimate insect-microbe-plant interactions jointly provide some new insights into the correlation among the host genetic background, larval host plant, the structure and evolution of gut microbiome, as well as the mechanisms of high-altitude adaptation in closely related species of this alpine butterfly group.

Although the use of geosocial networking (GSN) applications for relationship seeking is prevalent among sexual minority men (SMM), SMM of color may be vulnerable to sexual racism online. Little is known about how sexual racism relates to SMM of color's identity outness, which is integral to the minority stress model and the focus of this study. Eighty SMM, recruited through social media (53.7% racial/ethnic minority), reported their experiences of race-based discrimination on GSN apps and identity outness. Chi-squared and Fisher's tests examined differences in race-based discrimination online by participants' race/ethnicity. A factorial MANOVA was performed on outness to family, peers, and healthcare providers. Nearly one-third of participants experienced race-based discrimination online. Higher percentages of SMM of color experienced race-based discrimination than White SMM. SMM who experienced race-based discrimination online reported lower outness to family than those who had not. Post-hoc analyses revealed that Asian SMM reported consistently lower outness than other groups. Our findings resonated with the mediation framework of minority stress, suggesting that sexual racism online may be a distal stressor that contributes to the group-specific process of identity outness. This also illustrated the importance of addressing sexual racism on GSN apps to buffer existing stress with outness among SMM of color.

ABSTRACT

Hydroxyl radical (•OH) is a powerful oxidant abundantly found in nature and plays a central role in numerous environmental processes. On-site detection of •OH is highly desirable for real-time assessments of •OH-centered processes and yet is restrained by a lack of an analysis system suitable for field applications. Here, we report the development of a flow-injection chemiluminescence analysis (FIA-CL) system for the continuous field detection of •OH. The system is based on the reaction of •OH with phthalhydrazide to generate 5-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1,4-phthalazinedione, which emits chemiluminescence (CL) when oxidatively activated by H2O2 and Cu3+. The FIA-CL system was successfully validated using the Fenton reaction as a standard •OH source. Unlike traditional absorbance- or fluorescence-based methods, CL detection could minimize interference from an environmental medium (e.g., organic matter), therefore attaining highly sensitive •OH detection (limits of detection and quantification = 0.035 and 0.12 nM, respectively). The broad applications of FIA-CL were illustrated for on-site 24 h detection of •OH produced from photochemical processes in lake water and air, where the temporal variations on •OH productions (1.0-12.2 nM in water and 1.5-37.1 × 107 cm-3 in air) agreed well with sunlight photon flux. Further, the FIA-CL system enabled field 24 h field analysis of •OH productions from the oxidation of reduced substances triggered by tidal fluctuations in coastal soils. The superior analytical capability of the FIA-CL system opens new opportunities for monitoring •OH dynamics under field conditions.

ABSTRACT

Parnassius glacialis is a typical "Out of the QTP" alpine butterfly that originated on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and dispersed into relatively low-altitude mountainous. Here we assemble a chromosome-level genome of P. glacialis and resequence 9 populations in order to explore the genome evolution and local adaptation of this species. These results indicated that the rapid accumulation and slow unequal recombination of transposable elements (TEs) contributed to the formation of its large genome. Several ribosomal gene families showed extensive expansion and selective evolution through transposon-mediated processed pseudogenes. Additionally, massive structural variations (SVs) of TEs affected the genetic differentiation of low-altitude populations. These low-altitude populations might have experienced a genetic bottleneck in the past and harbor genes with selective signatures which may be responsible for the potential adaptation to low-altitude environments. These results provide a foundation for understanding genome evolution and local adaptation for "Out of the QTP" of P. glacialis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and HIV treatment as prevention, which underlies the Undetectable = Untransmittable (U = U) campaign, are two effective biomedical approaches for HIV prevention among sexual minority men (SMM). Attitudes toward PrEP and U = U may differ between SMM emerging adults (EA: 18-24 years old) and young adults (YA: 25-29 years old) to drive differences in sexual behavior. However, to date, few studies assessed the degree to which YAs and EAs differ in their beliefs in the effectiveness of PrEP and U = U. METHOD: A national sample of 80 SMM in the USA (Mage = 25.1 years; 53.7% racial/ethnic minority; 38.8% EA; 61.3% YA) participated in a 6-month mHealth intervention for PrEP adherence. Non-parametric tests assessed differences in sexual behaviors and attitudes toward the effectiveness of PrEP and U = U between EAs and YAs using baseline data. RESULTS: Compared to EAs, higher proportions of YAs trusted PrEP's effectiveness and considered condom use unnecessary after taking PrEP. More YAs than EAs were willing to engage in sexual behaviors that they felt too risky before learning about U = U and were more comfortable having condomless sex with HIV-positive partners. Conversely, a greater proportion of EAs than YAs preferred to use condoms even when their partners are on anti-HIV medications. CONCLUSION: Overall, YAs trusted the effectiveness of U = U and PrEP more than EAs, underscoring developmental differences in SMM's perspectives on biomedical HIV prevention tools. Our findings underscore the importance of tailoring messages on biomedical HIV prevention options differently for EAs and YAs to optimize uptake.

ABSTRACT

Confronted with the imperative crisis of water quality deterioration, the pursuit of state-of-the-art decontamination technologies for a sustainable future never stops. Fitting into the framework of suitability, advanced oxidation processes have been demonstrated as powerful technologies to produce highly reactive radicals for the degradation of toxic and refractory contaminants. Therefore, investigations on their radical-induced degradation have been the subject of scientistic and engineering interests for decades. To better understand the transient nature of these radical species and rapid degradation processes, laser flash photolysis (LFP) has been considered as a viable and powerful technique due to its high temporal resolution and rapid response. Although a number of studies exploited LFP for one (or one class of) specific reaction(s), reactions of many possible contaminants with radicals are largely unknown. Therefore, there is a pressing need to critically review its implementation for kinetic quantification and mechanism elucidation. Within this context, we introduce the development process and milestones of LFP with emphasis on compositions and operation principles. We then compare the specificity and suitability of different spectral modes for monitoring radicals and their decay kinetics. Radicals with high environmental relevance, namely hydroxyl radical, sulfate radical, and reactive chlorine species, are selected, and we discuss their generation, detection, and implications within the frame of LFP. Finally, we highlight remaining challenges and future perspectives. This review aims to advance our understandings of the implementation of LFP in radical-induced transient processes, and yield new insights for extrapolating this pump-probe technique to make significant strides in environmental implications.

ABSTRACT

Burgess Shale-type faunas are critical to our understanding of animal evolution during the Cambrian, giving an unrivalled view of the morphology of ancient organisms and the ecology of the earliest animal-dominated communities. Rare examples in Lower Ordovician strata such as the Fezouata Biota illustrate the subsequent evolution of ecosystems but only from before the main phase of the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event. Later Ordovician Konservat-Lagerstätten are not directly comparable with the Burgess Shale-type faunas as they do not represent diverse, open-shelf communities, limiting our ability to track ecological development through the critical Ordovician biodiversification interval. Here we present the Castle Bank fauna: a highly diverse Middle Ordovician Burgess Shale-type fauna from Wales (UK) that is directly comparable with the Burgess Shale and Chengjiang biotas in palaeoenvironment and preservational style. The deposit includes animals with morphologies similar to the iconic Cambrian taxa Opabinia, Yohoia and Wiwaxia, combined with early examples of more derived groups such as barnacles. Many taxa such as kinorhynchs show the small sizes typical of modern faunas, illustrating post-Cambrian miniaturization. Castle Bank provides a new perspective on early animal evolution, revealing the next chapter in ecosystem development following the Chengjiang, Burgess Shale and Fezouata biotas.

ABSTRACT

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective HIV prevention option for gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). However, with newer PrEP options, a greater understanding of whether and why GBMSM switch dosing strategies is needed to inform clinical practice and research. We assessed the dosing strategies (daily or on-demand) of GBMSM enrolled in an mHealth PrEP adherence pilot intervention at four timepoints over approximately 10 months. Among GBMSM with complete data (n = 66), a consistent daily dosing strategy was used by most (73%) participants across all time points, while on-demand PrEP was used at least once during the study period by 27% of participants. A higher percentage of on-demand PrEP users self-reported as Asian/Pacific Islander and had less positive attitudes toward PrEP, adjusting for key sociodemographic variables and intervention arm. Daily PrEP users reported high numbers of sexual partners, and the primary reason that they would switch to on-demand PrEP is reduced sexual activity. At the final assessment, 75% of participants were taking daily PrEP, of whom 27% reported that they would like to switch to another option, including on-demand and long-acting injectable PrEP. While findings were largely descriptive, they showed that switches in PrEP dosing strategies are relatively common and PrEP strategy choice may vary across racial and ethnic groups.

ABSTRACT

This paper provides a comprehensive literature review of numerical simulation models for engineering surfaces. This review attempts to make a link between the development of mainstream models, especially focusing on recent advances in surface topography modeling research within the last 2-3 years, and presenting future perspectives on these aspects. However, it is important to note that surface topography modeling serves more of a subsequent tribological simulation. Tribology is a highly multidisciplinary field, and its research results are widely distributed across various disciplines. Therefore, some literature may have been missed in this review. This review attempts to make a link between the development of mainstream models, and presenting future perspectives on these aspects. We hope that such a review will lead to the latest focused research and be useful to the growing community of theoretical research on engineering surface modeling.

ABSTRACT

Sarcotragusolides A-D (1-4), four new butenolide sesterterpenes featuring a rare methyl-transferred 6/6/6-tricyclic fused ring system with a butyrolactone moiety, and echinohalimane B (8), an unprecedented monocyclic diterpenoid featuring a 2,7-ring-opened halimane-type skeleton, were isolated from the sponge Sarcotragus sp. A γ-hydroxybutenolide sesterterpene derivative (5), a new scalarane sesterterpene (7), a new subersin-type diterpenoid (10), and two known terpenoids were also isolated and identified. The discovery of sarcotragusolides C and D (3 and 4) with an unprecedented inversion of configuration implied a distinct biosynthetic pathway. The structures of these compounds were elucidated based on their spectroscopic data, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, chemical derivatization, and quantum chemical calculations. Compounds 1a, 1b, and 2 presented modest cytotoxic activities against several human cancer cell lines.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This qualitative study examined perceived benefits and drawbacks of smoking/vaping and attitudes toward antitobacco campaigns among adolescent sexual minority males and gender-diverse (ASMM/GD) youth. Methods: In July 2019, 215 U.S. ASMM/GD youth (meanage 16.78, 95.3% cisgender male, 60.0% racial/ethnic minority) answered questions about smoking/vaping behaviors, motivations for smoking/vaping, and attitudes toward antitobacco campaigns via an online survey. Data were analyzed with thematic analysis. Results: Overall, 17.2% of participants had smoked cigarettes, and 34.9% had vaped. Teens described psychological (e.g., stress relief), chemical (e.g., nicotine buzz), and social incentives (e.g., fitting in with peers) for smoking/vaping. Teens also reported concerns about physical health, costs, and self-image as drawbacks of smoking/vaping. Most considered antitobacco campaigns unrelatable and uninteresting, while others reported that campaigns reinforced their decisions to not smoke/vape. Most participants wanted antitobacco campaigns to be tailored to the sexual and gender minority (SGM) community. Conclusions: These findings shed light on ASMM/GD youth's perspectives of smoking/vaping and antitobacco campaigns. Results suggest that equipping teens with skills to cope with minority stress and resisting peer pressure could indirectly reduce smoking/vaping, and that SGM-inclusive campaigns may better reach SGM adolescents.

ABSTRACT

The Ordovician Lagerstätten record substantial amounts of excellent preservation and soft-bodied fossils during the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE). However, few Lagerstätten are known from the Lower Ordovician, most of which are preserved in restricted environments and high-latitude regions. Here, we report on a new tropical Lagerstätte, Liexi fauna, which has been recently discovered from a carbonate succession within the Lower Ordovician Madaoyu Formation in western Hunan, South China. It contains a variety of soft tissues, as well as rich shelly fossils, including palaeoscolecidan worms, possible Ottoia, trilobites, echinoderms, sponges, graptolites, polychaetes, bryozoans, conodonts and other fossils. The fauna includes taxa that are not only Cambrian relics, but also taxa originated during the Ordovician, constituting a complex and complete marine ecosystem. The coexistence of the Cambrian relics and Ordovician taxa reveals the critical transition between the Cambrian and Palaeozoic Evolutionary faunas. The unusual Liexi fauna provides new evidence for understanding Ordovician macroevolution and the onset of the GOBE.

ABSTRACT

We studied 239 imagoes of 12 Parnassius species collected from the mountains of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) and its neighbouring areas in China. We selected three mitochondrial gene (COI, ND1, and ND5) sequences, along with the homologous gene sequences of other Parnassius species from GenBank, to reconstruct the phylogenetic tree and biogeographic history of this genus. Our results show that Parnassius comprises eight monophyletic subgenera, with subgenus Parnassius at the basal position; the genus crown group originated during the Middle Miocene (ca. 16.99 Ma), and species diversification continued during sustained cooling phases after the Middle Miocene Climate Optimum (MMCO) when the QTP and its neighbouring regions experienced rapid uplift and extensive orogeny. A phylogenetic network analysis based on transcriptomes from GenBank suggests that ancient gene introgression might have contributed to the spread of the Parnassius genus to different altitudes. Ancestral area reconstruction indicates that Parnassius most likely originated in West China (QTP and Xinjiang) and then spread to America in two dispersal events as subgenera Driopa and Parnassius, along with their host plants Papaveraceae and Crassulaceae, respectively. Our study suggests that extensive mountain-building processes led to habitat fragmentation in the QTP, leading to the early diversification of Parnassius, and climate cooling after MMCO was the driving mechanism for the dispersal of Parnassius butterflies from West China to East Asia, Europe, and North America.

ABSTRACT

Although phosphatized bryozoans have been described recently from the early Cambrian, the first unequivocal bryozoan fossils with hard skeletons are known from the Ordovician. Recent discoveries of bryozoans in the early Ordovician (Tremadocian) of South China have greatly expanded our understanding of the diversification of these colonial lophophorates. In particular, the Fenhsiang Formation of Late Tremadocian age (Migneintian) in Hubei Province is proving to be particularly rich in bryozoans. Here we record 24 species, including several yet to be formally described, belonging to 18 genera and four palaeostomate suborders (Esthonioporata, Cystoporata, Trepostomata, and Cryptostomata). Bryozoan diversity in the Fenhsiang Formation matches levels more typical of younger faunas of Middle Ordovician age. The presence of diverse and morphologically disparate taxa close to the base of the Ordovician suggests rapid diversification following the first appearance of bryozoans with calcified skeletons, and/or the existence of as yet unknown biomineralized bryozoans in the Cambrian.

BACKGROUND: This study described cigarette and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDs) use and their demographic and psychosocial correlates in a sample of sexual and gender minority (SGM) adolescents assigned male at birth. METHODS: One-way ANOVA, multivariate linear regression, and correlation analyses were conducted to examine correlates of cigarettes/ENDs use on 159 SGM adolescent users, ages 15-18. RESULTS: Fifty-three percent of the sample used cigarettes/ENDs, with differences based on sexual orientation: bisexual, pansexual, and queer adolescents used ENDs more than gay adolescents. White adolescents smoked more cigarettes than adolescents of color, independent of ENDs use. Regarding psychosocial correlates, alcohol use and depression were associated with greater daily cigarette use, while sexual orientation identity was associated with greater daily ENDs use. CONCLUSIONS: This study characterized frequency and psychosocial correlates of cigarettes/ENDs use among SGM adolescents. Findings highlighted several risk factors for tobacco use and will inform future interventions for SGM adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Bryozoans (also known as ectoprocts or moss animals) are aquatic, dominantly sessile, filter-feeding lophophorates that construct an organic or calcareous modular colonial (clonal) exoskeleton1-3. The presence of six major orders of bryozoans with advanced polymorphisms in lower Ordovician rocks strongly suggests a Cambrian origin for the largest and most diverse lophophorate phylum2,4-8. However, a lack of convincing bryozoan fossils from the Cambrian period has hampered resolution of the true origins and character assembly of the earliest members of the group. Here we interpret the millimetric, erect, bilaminate, secondarily phosphatized fossil Protomelission gatehousei9 from the early Cambrian of Australia and South China as a potential stem-group bryozoan. The monomorphic zooid capsules, modular construction, organic composition and simple linear budding growth geometry represent a mixture of organic Gymnolaemata and biomineralized Stenolaemata character traits, with phylogenetic analyses identifying P. gatehousei as a stem-group bryozoan. This aligns the origin of phylum Bryozoa with all other skeletonized phyla in Cambrian Age 3, pushing back its first occurrence by approximately 35 million years. It also reconciles the fossil record with molecular clock estimations of an early Cambrian origination and subsequent Ordovician radiation of Bryozoa following the acquisition of a carbonate skeleton10-13.

ABSTRACT

Interests in the kinetics of radical-induced reactions in aqueous solution have grown remarkably due to their water engineering significance (e.g., advanced oxidation processes). Although compilations of the rate constants (k) for various radicals have been documented, surprisingly a systematic review has yet to be reported on the development of reliable methods for determining k values. A knowledge gap exists to critically evaluate and screen the various methods to measure them. In this review, we summarize the direct and indirect methods under steady-state and non-steady-state conditions, followed by critical evaluations on their advantages and disadvantages. The radicals of ·OH, [Formula: see text] , [Formula: see text] , and Cl· were chosen based on their significant aquatic environmental relevance. MS excel spreadsheets that demonstrate the determination processes were provided allowing one to reproduce the data and/or to analyze the unprocessed raw data as a "template". We formulated a standard operation procedure for the k determination, although there is simply no "versatile" method fitting for all radical reactions. Finally, existing challenges and future research focus are discussed. This is the first review covering methodological approaches and considerations, aiming to provide a holistic and fundamental basis to choose an appropriate method for determining the k values for bimolecular reactions between target compounds and radicals in the aqueous phase.
