ABSTRACT

With the in-depth study of solid-state batteries (SSBs), various in situ and ex situ characterization technologies have been widely used to study them. The performance and reliability of SSBs are limited by the formation and evolution of lithium dendrites at the interfaces between solid electrodes and solid electrolytes. We propose a new method based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) for in situ characterization of the internal state of solid-state batteries. OCT is a low-loss, high-resolution, non-invasive imaging technique that can provide real-time monitoring of cross-sectional images of internal structures of SSBs. The morphology, growth, and evolution of lithium dendrites at different stages of cycling under various conditions can be visualized and quantified by OCT. Furthermore, we validate and correlate the OCT results with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and XPS, proving the accuracy and effectiveness of the OCT characterization method. We reveal the interfacial phenomena and challenges in SSBs and demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of OCT as a powerful tool for in situ and operando imaging of battery interfaces. This study provides new insights into the mechanisms and factors that affect SSB performance, safety, and lifetime, and suggests possible solutions for improvement and application in the field of applied energy.

ABSTRACT

Observational studies on the association between citrus fruit intake and risk of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have reported inconsistent results. We quantitatively assessed this association by conducting a meta-analysis. PubMed and Embase databases search was conducted including relevant studies published up to January, 2020. We included epidemiological studies that reported relative risks (RRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between citrus fruit intake and RCC risk. A total of eight epidemiological studies consisting of five cohort and three case-control studies were included. The overall analysis showed a significantly reduced risk of RCC for high intake of citrus fruit (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.73-0.95). No heterogeneity was detected among the included studies (p = 0.497 for heterogeneity; I2 = 0). There was no significant publication bias by Begg's test (p = 0.266) or Egger's test (P = 0.578). A statistically significant association between citrus fruit intake and RCC was observed in case-control studies (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.71-0.98), while no association was observed in cohort studies (OR = 0.84, 95% CI 0.64-1.05). In addition, the dose-response analysis indicated that the RCC risk reduced by 13% (95%CI 1.0%-27%, p = 0.04 for heterogeneity) for each 100 grams per day increment of citrus fruit intake. In summary, our findings suggest an inverse association between citrus fruit intake and RCC incidence.

ABSTRACT

Background and aims: Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) was used to prevent and treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in clinical practices. Many studies have demonstrated that the combination of CHM and Western medicine can be more effective in treating COVID-19 compared to Western medicine alone. However, evidence-based studies on the prevention in undiagnosed or suspected cases remain scarce. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effectiveness of CHM in preventing recurrent, new, or suspected COVID-19 diseases. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search using ten databases including articles published between December 2019 and September 2023. This search aimed to identify studies investigating the use of CHM to prevent COVID-19. Heterogeneity was assessed by a random-effects model. The relative risk (RR) and mean differences were calculated using 95% confidence intervals (CI). The modified Jadad Scale and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) were employed to evaluate the quality of randomized controlled trials and cohort studies, respectively. Results: Seventeen studies with a total of 47,351 patients were included. Results revealed that CHM significantly reduced the incidence of COVID-19 (RR = 0.24, 95% CI = 0.11-0.53, p = 0.0004), influenza (RR = 0.37, 95% CI = 0.18-0.76, p = 0.007), and severe pneumonia exacerbation rate (RR = 0.17, 95% CI = 0.05-0.64, p = 0.009) compared to non-treatment or conventional control group. Evidence evaluation indicated moderate quality evidence for COVID-19 incidence and serum complement components C3 and C4 in randomized controlled trials. For the incidence of influenza and severe pneumonia in RCTs as well as the ratio of CD4+/CD8+ lymphocytes, the evidence quality was low. The remaining outcomes including the disappearance rate of symptoms and adverse reactions were deemed to be of very low quality. Conclusion: CHM presents a promising therapeutic option for the prevention of COVID-19. However, additional high-quality clinical trials are needed to further strengthen evidential integrity.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of carbapenemase-producing Acinetobacter spp. has been widely reported and become a global threat. However, carbapenem-resistant A. johnsonii strains are relatively rare and without comprehensive genetic structure analysis, especially for isolates collected from human specimen. Here, one A. johnsonii AYTCM strain, co-producing NDM-1, OXA-58, and PER-1 enzymes, was isolated from sputum in China in 2018. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing showed that it was resistant to meropenem, imipenem, ceftazidime, ciprofloxacin, and cefoperazone/sulbactam. Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis revealed that it possessed 11 plasmids. bla OXA-58 and bla PER-1 genes were located in the pAYTCM-1 plasmid. Especially, a complex class 1 integron consisted of a 5' conserved segment (5' CS) and 3' CS, which was found to carry sul1, arr-3, qnrVC6, and bla PER-1 cassettes. Moreover, the bla NDM-1 gene was located in 41,087 conjugative plasmids and was quite stable even after 70 passages under antibiotics-free conditions. In addition, six prophage regions were identified. Tracking of closely related plasmids in the public database showed that pAYTCM-1 was similar to pXBB1-9, pOXA23_010062, pOXA58_010030, and pAcsw19-2 plasmids, which were collected from the strains of sewage in China. Concerning the pAYTCM-3 plasmids, results showed that strains were collected from different sources and their hosts were isolated from various countries, such as China, USA, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico, suggesting that a wide spread occurred all over the world. In conclusion, early surveillance is warranted to avoid the extensive spread of this high-risk clone in the healthcare setting.

ABSTRACT

We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the clinical efficacy of berberine (BBR) in treating acute ischemic stroke (AIS), explore its anti-inflammatory effects, and assess its potential applications for AIS patients. We comprehensively searched nine databases from inception until July 1, 2022, to identify clinical trials investigating the use of BBR in treating AIS. We performed statistical analyses using RevMan5.4 software and focused on primary outcomes such as inflammatory markers as well as secondary outcomes including immune system indicators, relevant biomarkers, carotid artery atherosclerosis, and adverse reactions. Our analysis included data from 17 clinical trials involving 1670 patients with AIS. Our results revealed that BBR in combination with conventional treatment significantly reduced levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), interleukin-6 (IL-6), complement C3, hypoxic inducible factor-1 α (HIF-1α), cysteine protease-3 (Caspase-3), the national institutes of health stroke scale (NIHSS), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), the number of unstable plaques, and carotid crouse score on ultrasound when compared with conventional treatment alone. Furthermore, combining BBR with conventional treatment may improve the overall effective rate. Therefore, our findings suggest that BBR can be used as an adjuvant therapy for AIS due to its ability to reduce inflammatory cytokine levels, providing a novel therapeutic option for AIS. However, larger randomized controlled trials are necessary to confirm these results.

OBJECTIVES: The phylogenetic characteristics of Acinetobacter seifertii clinical strain are not well-studied. Here, we reported one tigecycline-resistant ST1612Pasteur A. seifertii isolated from bloodstream infections (BSI) in China. METHODS: Antimicrobial susceptibility tests were conducted via broth microdilution. Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was performed and annotation was conducted using rapid annotations subsystems technology (RAST) server. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST), capsular polysaccharide (KL), and lipoolygosaccharide (OCL) were analysed using PubMLST and Kaptive. Resistance genes, virulence factors, and comparative genomics analysis were performed. Cloning, mutations of efflux pump-related genes, and expression level were further investigated. RESULTS: The draft genome sequence of A. seifertii ASTCM strain is made up of 109 contigs with a total length of 4,074,640 bp. Based on the RAST results, 3923 genes that belonged to 310 subsystems were annotated. Acinetobacter seifertii ASTCM was ST1612Pasteur with KL26 and OCL4, respectively. It was resistant to gentamicin and tigecycline. ASTCM harboured tet(39), sul2, and msr(E)-mph(E), and one amino acid mutation in Tet(39) (T175A) was further identified. Nevertheless, the signal mutation failed to contribute to susceptibility change of tigecycline. Of note, several amino acid substitutions were identified in AdeRS, AdeN, AdeL, and Trm, which could lead to overexpression of adeB, adeG, and adeJ efflux pump genes and further possibly lead to tigecycline resistance. Phylogenetic analysis showed that a huge diversity was observed among A. seifertii strains based on 27-52,193 SNPs difference. CONCLUSION: In summary, we reported a tigecycline-resistant ST1612Pasteur A. seifertii in China. Early detection is recommended to prevent their further spread in clinical settings.

Background: The efficacy of conventional pharmacotherapy on osteoporosis was limited and accompanied with serious side effects. Epimedium might have the potential to be developed as agents to treat osteoporosis. The present systematic review and meta-analysis integrating Western medicine and Eastern medicine ("WE" medicine) was to evaluate the efficacy of Epimedium on osteoporosis. Methods: Eleven electronic databases were searched to identify the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing Epimedium as an adjunctive or alternative versus conventional pharmacotherapy during osteoporosis. Bone mineral density (BMD), effective rate, and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were measured as primary outcomes. The secondary outcomes were pain relief time, bone metabolic markers, and adverse events. Research quality evaluation was conducted according to the modified Jadad scale. Review Manager 5.4 was utilized to perform analyses, and the data were pooled using a random-effect or fixed-effect model to calculate the weighted mean difference (WMD), standardized mean difference (SMD), risk ratio (RR), and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Twelve RCTs recruiting 1,017 patients were eligible. Overall, it was possible to verify that, in the Epimedium plus conventional pharmacotherapy group, BMD was significantly improved (p = 0.03), effective rate was significantly improved (p = 0.0001), and VAS was significantly decreased (p = 0.01) over those in control group. When compared to conventional pharmacotherapy, Epimedium used alone improved BMD (p = 0.009) and effective rate (p < 0.0001). VAS was lower (p < 0.00001), and the level of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was significantly decreased (p = 0.01) in patients taking Epimedium alone compared with those given conventional pharmacotherapy. Results of subgroup analyses yielded that the recommended duration of Epimedium as an adjuvant was >3 months (p = 0.03), the recommended duration of Epimedium as an alternative was ≤3 months (p = 0.002), and Epimedium decoction brought more benefits (SMD = 2.33 [1.92, 2.75]) compared with other dosage forms. No significant publication bias was identified based on statistical tests (t = 0.81, p = 0.440). Conclusions: Epimedium may improve BMD and effective rate and relieve pain as an adjuvant or alternative; Epimedium as an alternative might regulate bone metabolism, especially ALP, with satisfying clinical efficacy during osteoporosis. More rigorous RCTs are warranted to confirm these results.

ABSTRACT

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a primary malignant tumor characterized by a high metastatic potential and poor prognosis. The dysregulation of miR-588 has been demonstrated to serve crucial roles in the progression of numerous types of cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the expression and function of miR-588 in the development of OS. To do so, clinical samples were collected and analyzed, and in vitro experiments were conducted. A total of 104 patients with OS were recruited between 2012 and 2014. The expression of miR-588 was analyzed by reverse transcription quantitative PCR. The association between miR-588 expression and the clinicopathological characteristics and survival rate of patients with OS was evaluated. Furthermore, Cell Counting Kit-8 and Transwell assays were used to evaluate the effect of miR-588 on the proliferation and the migratory and invasive abilities of various OS cell lines. The results demonstrated that miR-588 expression in OS tissues and cells was significantly lower compared with normal tissues and cells. In addition, miR-588 expression was closely associated with the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) staging of patients with OS. miR-588 expression and MSTS staging were therefore considered as independent indicators for the prognosis of patients with OS. In addition, miR-588 downregulation significantly stimulated the proliferation and migratory and invasive abilities of OS cells. Taken together, these findings indicated that miR-588 may serve as an independent prognostic factor and tumor suppressor in OS.

ABSTRACT

A fiber-optics tapered sensor that is covered by an electrospinning polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber film, is demonstrated to measure humidity and temperature simultaneously. A section multi-mode fiber (MMF) was sandwiched between two leading-in and out single mode fibers (SMFs), which was further tapered down to 29 µm to promote the humidity sensitivity of the sensor. A thin layer of electrospinning PVA nanofiber film was uniformly coated on the MMF taper region by electrospinning technology. In order to promote the humidity sensitivity and mechanical strength of electrospinning nanofibers, the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were mixed into PVA to formed PVA/CNTs composite nanofiber film. A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) was cascaded with the humidity sensing fiber to monitor the ambient temperature simultaneously. The addition of CNTs effectively eliminated the cracks on the electrospinning nanofiber and made it more uniform and smoother. As experimental results show, the humidity sensitivity of the sensor with PVA/CNTs film was 0.0484 dB/%RH, an improvement of 31.16% compared to that of the sensor with PVA film, for which sensitivity is 0.0369 dB/%RH. The nanofiber humidity-sensitive film constructed using electrospinning had a satisfactory humidity response, special 3D structure and extensive application prospect.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy of corn silk decoction on lipid profile in patients with angina pectoris. PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, Google Scholar, Chongqing VIP Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang database were searched up to January 2019 for randomized controlled trials that assessed the impact of corn silk decoction on total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with angina pectoris. Study evaluation and synthesis methods were in accordance with the Cochrane Handbook, and data were analyzed using Review Manager (version 5.3) software. Random effects model was applied in this systematic review and meta-analysis to compensate for potential heterogeneity among the included studies. A total of four randomized controlled trials were eligible for meta-analysis. Pooled results of these studies indicated that corn silk decoction might improve high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and reduce total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol in patients with angina pectoris. Subgroup analyses showed that corn silk decoction or modified corn silk decoction plus conventional pharmaceutical treatment could have favorable effects on blood lipids. However, the lack of blinding in most studies may have led to overestimation of these effects. Further studies with better design are needed to confirm these findings.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper was to study the effect and mechanism of alcohol extract from Polygonum cuspidatum(PCE) on acute gouty arthritis in C57 BL/6 mice through NLRP3/ASC/caspase-1 axis. The model mice which injected with ankle joint injection of sodium urate crystals(MSU) were orally administrated with three different concentration of PCE, with colchicine as positive control. HE staining was used for observing the morphological changes of synovial tissue; concentration of IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α secreted by synovial tissue of the ankle joint were detected by ELISA; mRNA and protein expression of NLRP3, ASC and caspase-1 in synovial tissue were detected by RT-PCR and Western blot respectively. The results showed that the swelling degree of ankle joint in model mice were significantly elevated; expression of IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly increased; mRNA and protein expression of NLRP3, ASC and caspase-1 also significant increase, compared with normal control group. The swelling degree of ankle joint significantly relief; expression of IL-1ß, IL-6 and TNF-α in joint synovium significantly decrease; mRNA and protein expression of NLRP3, ASC and caspase-1 were significantly decrease in PCE treatment group compared with model group. Our research implied that alcohol extract from P. cuspidatum had positive effect on acute gouty arthritis in mice, and the regulation of NLRP3/ASC/caspase-1 axis may be its mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is an important steroid that can regulate bone metabolism including osteoclast (OC) differentiation. Transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 5 (TRPV5), is a calcium channel protein involved in OC differentiation. However, the impact of vitamin D on TRPV5 expression during OC differentiation is not clear. OBJECTIVES: To determine if 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3) regulates the expression of TRPV5 during OC differentiation. METHODS: Bone marrow mononuclear macrophage (BMMs) were induced to differentiate into OC with or without treatment with 10 nM 1,25(OH)2D3. The expression levels of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and TRPV5 were examined. The expression of several OC markers, including tartrate resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), carbonic anhydrase II (Ca II), cathepsin K (CTSK), and vacuolar-type H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) were also detected. RESULTS: We found that the VDR was expressed in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages at the early stage of OC differentiation. TRPV5 expression was increased during OC differentiation, which was down-regulated by 1,25(OH)2D3 after a prolonged exposure. The 1,25(OH)2D3 and TRPV5 inhibitors inhibited OC differentiation. CONCLUSIONS: 1,25(OH)2D3 can inhibit TRPV5 expression as well as TRPV5 inhibitors during OC differentiation. This suggests that 1,25(OH)2D3 may suppress OC differentiation by inhibiting TRPV5 expression.

BACKGROUND: The findings of epidemiologic studies on the association between fiber intake and prostate cancer risk remain conflicting. We aimed to examine this association by conducting a meta-analysis of epidemiological studies. METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by PubMed (1966 to March 2015) and Embase (1974 to March 2015) database search through March 2015. We included epidemiological studies that reported relative risks (RRs) or odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between dietary fiber intake and prostate cancer risk. Random effects models were used to calculate the summary risk estimates. RESULTS: For the highest compared with the lowest dietary fiber intake, a significantly decreased risk with prostate cancer was observed in case-control studies (OR = 0.82; 95% CI, 0.68-0.96), but not in cohort studies (RR = 0.94; 95% CI, 0.77-1.11). The combined risk estimate of all studies was 0.89 (95% CI, 0.77, 1.01). A significant heterogeneity was observed across studies (p = 0.005). There was no evidence of significant publication bias based on Begg's funnel plot (p = 0.753) or Egger's test (p = 0.946). CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis suggests the absence of evidence for association between dietary fiber intake and prostate cancer risk.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To study therapeutic effects of retrograde locked intramedullary nail for the treatment of middle or distal fractures of humeral shaft. METHODS: From October 2002 to February 2005, 21 patients with middle or distal fractures of humeral shaft were treated with AO retrograde locked intramedullary nail. Among the patients, 13 patients were male and 8 patients were female, ranging in age from 23 to 56 years, with an average of 34.5 years. Nineteen patients were fresh fractures, and 2 patients were old fractures. Eleven patients had middle fractures of humeral shaft, and other 10 patients had distal fractures of humeral shaft. Two patients with old fractures were non-union and treated with autoallergic bone grafting; 5 patients combined with radial nerve injury underwent exploration. The therapeutic effects were evaluated according to Constant-Murley shoulder score and Mayo elbow score. RESULTS: All the patients were followed up, ranging from 18 to 24 months, with an average of 20.8 months. The fractures were healed except 1 patient with old fracture and 1 patient with extremely distal acute fracture. The shoulders and elbows had satisfactory recovery except 1 patient with old fracture. The mean Constant-Murley score was (83.6 +/- 13.4) points (50-97), 12 patients got an excellent result, 5 good, 4 fair and no bad; the mean Mayo elbow score was (88.6 +/- 9.8) points (65-95), 13 patients got an excellent result, 5 good, 3 fair and no bad. CONCLUSION: The retrograde locked intramedullary nail offers an ideal treatment method for middle and distal fractures of humeral shaft. Strict operative indication, precise surgical techniques and stable locking are the keys to a successful treatment results.
