ABSTRACT

The findings acquired from two focus groups (13 generalist RNs and 13 specialist RNs) which were held to evaluate compact disc interactive (CD-i) as a self-learning option for staff development were reviewed. The findings from these groups were that the CD-i platform offers educators the opportunity to design programs that meet nurses' learning needs without the need for multi-media, computers, and the associated platform training and education. This study reinforced the previously identified problem that nurses have difficulty balancing the responsibilities of providing direct patient care and the need for additional education and training and that self-study is an acceptable alternative to the traditional lecture format.

ABSTRACT

An imperative for prolonged Space flight missions is the conservation of resources. Extensive resupply could pose technological and logistical challenges for those responsible for the management and successful completion of the mission. Therefore, the biological waste water reclamation system (BWWR) which requires little or no expendable supplies and the waste cellulose to edible mushroom conversion system (CMCS) which is conceived as a low energy crop waste recycling system are prototype instruments which have been conceived as solutions to the mission resupply problem. Out tests, conducted with relatively crude devices based on the original concepts, indicate that further research on the basic principles underlying the systems and refinement of the engineering designs will lead to hardware with the potential to satisfy the requirement for minimal re-supply while providing recycled water and edible mushrooms.

ABSTRACT

Nosocomial infections result in increased costs for the patient and hospital and more importantly, these infections increase patient morbidity and mortality. Patients in intensive care areas have a higher risk of nosocomial infection than other hospitalized patients. Severity of illness and the use of multiple devices associated with high risk infection are contributing causes. The authors describe a project to improve the standard of care for patients with central and hemodynamic lines.

ABSTRACT

Standardization of performance expectations and accountability for nursing care have been an integral part of nursing departments for many years. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals (JCAHO) has used the nursing standards manual to evaluate a nursing division's capability to provide quality care. In this article, the way in which a meaningful quality assurance system is developed is discussed. The aspects discussed in depth are (1) development of standards that define performance; and (2) quality assurance measures that audit performance. By following the steps outlined, a nursing department will have progressed from describing the nurse's capability to provide optimum care to demonstrating optimum performance.

ABSTRACT

This paper describes a study of the outcome of psychotherapy with patients disabled by chronic obstructive airways disease giving rise to dyspnoea. Forty-three men and 22 women with severe COAD were randomly allocated for 8 weeks to one of three types of psychotherapy or to an untreated control group, and were followed up six months later. The group treated by a medical nurse without training in psychotherapy experienced sustained relief of dyspnoea but tended to undergo less psychodynamic change; psychiatric symptoms were reduced in those receiving supportive, but not analytical, psychotherapy. The psychosomatic mechanisms involved and the implications for medical and nursing practice and for liaison psychotherapy are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A method of content analysis has been designed for application in brief focal psychotherapy with physically ill patients. The method is being used to study the process of therapy with patients with chronic obstructive airways disease. This paper discusses its reliability and validity in this context and suggests that it may illuminate the relevance of environmental factors to the development of the transference.
