ABSTRACT

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the pattern and distribution of traumatic injuries to primary and permanent anterior teeth in 2-14-year-old pediatric dental patients in AlHassa region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: The study sample consisted of pediatric dental patients visiting the university dental complex seeking treatment for traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) during the period from February 2022 to April 2023. Data were collected by means of interviewing the children and/or parents regarding the history of trauma and clinical examination for evidence of dental trauma to primary and permanent teeth. Results: A total of 122 children (184 teeth) including 78 (63.9%) boys and 44 (36.1%) girls sustained traumatic injuries to their teeth. The most common reason for dental trauma was falls, and maxillary right central incisor was the most frequently affected permanent teeth. Enamel-dentine fractures in permanent teeth and luxation injuries among primary teeth were predominantly noted. Majority of the injuries (47.5%) have been found to have not received timely attention for treatment. Conclusions: Early treatment of dental trauma should be emphasized, and preventive strategies targeted at parents and teachers at the community level are needed to promote and reduce the burden of TDIs.

ABSTRACT

Estimation of early orthodontic treatment need among children is essential for planning orthodontic interventions in the mixed dentition stages thereby reducing the burden in a publicly funded healthcare system. The present study aimed to assess the early orthodontic treatment need among children with mixed dentition in the Eastern Saudi Arabia. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among Saudi children visiting the outpatient clinics in a University dental setting, and data were collected based on Index for preventive and interceptive orthodontic need (IPION). Descriptive statistics, chi-square test and Fisher's exact test were used for data analysis with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The category of 'no treatment need' accounted for 11.3% while 'moderate treatment need' and 'definite treatment need' categories accounted for 29.3% and 59.4% respectively. There was no statistical difference between males and females in the distribution of the three categories of treatment need (p = 0.513). This study demonstrated a very high need for early orthodontic treatment among Saudi children in the mixed dentition stage. Emphasis should be placed on increased awareness and benefits of seeking early orthodontic treatment involving preventive and interceptive procedures in the mixed dentition.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the cytomorphometric changes in the buccal mucosal smears and to correlate the cytomorphometric findings and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients. In addition, DNA repair proficiency in peripheral lymphocytes of T1D patients was evaluated. Smears from the clinically normal buccal mucosa of 46 healthy subjects as controls and randomly selected 45 T1D patients, were stained using the Papanicolaou method, and the mean values (µm2) of nuclear area (NA), cytoplasmic area (CA), and cytoplasmic: nucleus ratio (CNR) were obtained for each patient. DNA damage in diabetics and control subjects was tested on peripheral blood samples using an in vitro mutagen sensitivity assay. Statistical analysis included Student's t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation test to correlate cytomorphometric changes with HbA1c levels in both T1D and healthy control groups. The mean NA and CA values were higher in T1D while the mean CNR was found to be higher in the healthy control group. Statistical significance between the two groups was found only for the mean NA (P < 0.001) and mean CNR values (P < 0.001). A significant correlation was seen between HbA1c and CNR in both the T1D group (P = 0.015) and the healthy control group (P = 0.02). Significant differences were noted between the T1D and control subjects with regard to the frequency of damaged cells and DNA repair proficiency (P < 0.05). Significant cytomorphometric alterations were detected in the buccal mucosal cells of diabetic patients, which may aid in the early detection of diabetes or predict the risk for future disease complications among T1D patients.

ABSTRACT

Adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the medial aspect of the mandibular ramus is essential in order to prevent inferior alveolar nerve anesthetic failure and nerve injuries associated with mandibular ramal surgical procedures. The purpose of this study was to assess the morphology of the lingula and analyze the correlation of presence probability between the lingula and antilingula using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Three-dimensional images reconstructed from mandibular CBCT images of 125 Saudi individuals (250 sides), aged 16-36 years, were retrospectively evaluated for distribution in the shape of the lingulae. Additionally, the presence probability of the lingula and antilingula was assessed with respect to gender and the mandible (unilateral and bilateral), and correlation between the variables was analyzed. A nodular shape of the lingula was most commonly found (37.6%) followed by a triangular shape (30%). No significant differences were observed between the genders with regard to the presence of the lingula (p = 0.108) and antilingula (p = 0.530). Gender was non-significantly correlated with the presence of the lingula and antilingula, whilst the presence of lingula showed a significant but weak correlation with that of the antilingula (rs = 0.221; p = 0.000). The present study provides information regarding morphological variations of the mandibular lingula in the Saudi population. The presence of the lingula was unassociated with that of the antilingula and hence consideration of the antilingula as the absolute landmark for mandibular ramus surgical procedures seems insufficient.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of occlusal traits and to evaluate the orthodontic treatment need among children aged 8-9 years in Al Ahsa, Eastern region of Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 282 Saudi children who were randomly selected from those visiting dental outpatient clinics at the College of dentistry in King Faisal University, AlAhsa. All the children were evaluated using the DHC and AC components of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Descriptive statistics, chisquare test and Fisher's Exact test were used for data analysis with statistical significance set at p< 0.05. RESULTS: The most prevalent malocclusal trait was crowding (39.7%) followed by increased overjet (28.4%). About 30.9% and 17% of the children were in definite need for orthodontic treatment according to DHC and AC of IOTN, respectively. There was no statistical difference in the distribution of DHC (p=0.116) and AC (p=0.177) scores between the gender. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated high percentage of malocclusal traits and orthodontic treatment need in the mixed dentition period among 8-9-year-old children in the Eastern region. Emphasis should be placed on early orthodontic screening and treatment in the mixed dentition stage of dental development.

ABSTRACT

Gnathic osteosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm showing evidence of osteoid matrix formation. Clinical behaviour and radiological appearances overlap with benign osseous lesions and are prone to misdiagnosis. Early diagnosis of osteosarcoma plays a crucial role in the treatment plan and prognosis. Herein a rare case of parosteal osteosarcoma of fibroblastic histologic subtype affecting the angle of the mandible in a 12-year-old female is presented.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the position of the mandibular foramen (MF) with regard to the occlusal plane (OP) and the anterior border (AB) of the mandibular ramus (AB) in a sample of 7-12-year-old Saudi children using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this descriptive, observational study, 155 CBCT scans were selected and analyzed for positional changes in the MF. Reconstructed panoramic and axial sections were used to measure the MF-OP and MF-AB distances, respectively, on both the right and left sides of the mandible. Data were analyzed using paired t-test, independent t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc tests where applicable, at a significance level of P < 0.05. RESULTS: The mean distance of MF from the AB of the ramus was 14.68 mm, with no significant differences between the genders (P > 0.05). The MF moved upward from a position below the OP to above it, according to age in both males and females, and the difference between the age groups was significant (P < 0.05). No significant differences (P < 0.05) in the mean values of distances between the right and left sides of the mandible were seen. CONCLUSIONS: The location of the MF varies with respect to age and should be considered while administering inferior alveolar nerve block in children to achieve a more effective anesthesia.

ABSTRACT

Intraosseous hemangioma is a benign vascular neoplasm and seldom affects the mandible. The diagnosis is challenging owing to its unspecific clinical and radiographic findings. Treatment options in children should be elective based on their age, symptoms, and facial deformity. Herein a rare case of intraosseous hemangioma of the mandible in a 14-year-old female is presented.
