ABSTRACT

Participation has become an important measure of outcome in child rehabilitation as young children with developmental disabilities are increasingly at risk of decreased participation. Therefore, this study garnered information on clinicians' perspectives regarding perceived facilitators and barriers when rendering participation-based interventions using a qualitative research design. Semi-structured interviews of clinicians (Ns = 12, 25-57 years) were conducted and evaluated via an inductive thematic analysis. Results denote that current mechanisms of providing participation-based interventions resembled traditionally focused interventions; thus, resulting in a knowledge-to-practice gap. Clinicians desired more opportunities to communicate with caregivers and to be able to influence the children' s natural environments. They also identified shortness of time, resources, and rigid health care regulations as barriers hampering the efficacy of participation-based services.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Statins are commonly used in patients with hypercholesterolemia to lower their cholesterol levels and to reduce their cardiovascular risk. There is also considerable evidence that statins possess a range of cholesterol-independent effects, including profibrinolytic properties. This pilot study aimed to explore the influence of statins on procarboxypeptidase U (proCPU) biology and to search for possible effects and associations that can be followed up in a larger study. METHODS: Blood was collected from 16 patients with hyperlipidemia, before and after 3 months of statin therapy (simvastatin 20 mg or atorvastatin 20 mg). Fifteen age-matched normolipemic persons served as control subjects. Lipid parameters and markers of inflammation and fibrinolysis (proCPU levels and clot lysis times) were determined in all samples. FINDINGS: Mean (SD) proCPU levels were significantly higher in patients with hypercholesterolemia compared to control subjects (1186 [189] U/L vs 1061 [60] U/L). Treatment of these patients with a statin led to a significant average decrease of 11.6% in proCPU levels and brought the proCPU concentrations to the same level as in the control subjects. On a functional level, enhancement in plasma fibrinolytic potential was observed in the statin group, with the largest improvement in fibrinolysis seen in patients with the highest baseline proCPU levels and largest proCPU decrease upon statin treatment. IMPLICATIONS: Increased proCPU levels are present in patients with hyperlipidemia. Statin treatment significantly decreased proCPU levels and improved plasma fibrinolysis in these patients. Moreover, our study indicates that patients with high baseline proCPU levels are most likely to benefit from statin therapy. The latter should be examined further in a large cohort.

ABSTRACT

NOMAD is a spectrometer suite on board ESA's ExoMars trace gas orbiter due for launch in January 2016. NOMAD consists of two infrared channels and one ultraviolet and visible channel allowing the instrument to perform observations quasi-constantly, by taking nadir measurements at dayside and nightside, and during solar occultations. In this paper, the design, manufacturing, and testing of the two infrared channels are described. We focus upon the optical working principle in these channels, where an echelle grating, used as a diffractive element, is combined with an acousto-optical tunable filter, used as a diffraction order sorter.

ABSTRACT

We describe a new spectral imaging instrument using a TeO(2) acousto-optical tunable filter (AOTF) operating in the visible domain (450-900 nm). It allows for fast (~1 second), monochromatic (FWHM ranges from 0.6 nm at 450 nm to 3.5 nm at 800 nm) picture acquisition with good spatial resolution. This instrument was designed as a breadboard of the visible channel of a new satellite-borne atmospheric limb spectral imager, named the Atmospheric Limb Tracker for the Investigation of the Upcoming Stratosphere (ALTIUS), that is currently being developed. We tested its remote sensing capabilities by observing the dense, turbulent plume exhausted by a waste incinerator stack at two wavelengths sensitive to NO(2). An average value of 6.0±0.4×10(17) molecules cm(-2) has been obtained for the NO(2) slant column density within the plume, close to the stack outlet. Although this result was obtained with a rather low accuracy, it demonstrates the potential of spectral imaging by using AOTFs in remote sensing.

ABSTRACT

An integrated biodiesel process that combines enzymatic esterification and alkaline transesterification is suggested. With focus on the enzymatic step, the paper provides proof of concept and suggestions for further process development. Hence, palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) has been enzymatically converted to fatty acid methyl esters in a two-step process using the immobilized lipase Novozym 435 in packed-bed columns. With only a small excess of methanol, the first reaction stage could reduce the free fatty acid (FFA) content from 85% to 5%. After removal of water by simple phase separation, it was possible to lower the FFA content to 2.5% in a second reaction stage. Both reaction stages are relatively fast with suggested reaction times of 15 min in column 1 (productivity 10 kg/kg/h) and 30 min in column 2 (productivity 5 kg/kg/h), resulting in 15% FFA after column 1 and 5% FFA after column 2. A lifetime study indicated that approximately 3,500 kg PFAD/kg Novozym 435 can be treated in the first reaction stage before the enzyme has become fully inactivated. With further optimization, the enzymatic process could be a real alternative to today's sulfuric acid catalyzed process.
