ABSTRACT

Aluminum toxicity in biological systems is a well-known issue yet remains as a prevalent and unsolvable problem due to the lack of proper molecular tools that can detect free aluminum(iii) or Al(iii) ions in vivo. Herein, we report a water-soluble photo-induced electron transfer (PET)-based turn-ON/OFF fluorometric chemosensor for the dual detection of Al(iii) and fluoride ions in aqueous media with a nanomolar (∼1.7 × 10-9 M) and picomolar (∼2 × 10-12 M, lowest ever detection so far) detection limit, respectively. Fluoride ions in sea water could be detected as well as the recognition of non-contamination in drinking water. In addition, using live-cell microscopy, Al(iii) ions were detected in live biological samples in vivo to aid establishing the aluminum-toxicity effect.

ABSTRACT

Detailed single-crystal electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of oxalamide complexes with halogen-bridged copper dimers, supported by X-ray, magnetic susceptibility, and powder ESR studies, is reported. Four complexes with two different ligands are synthesized: [CuLA (µ-X)]2 and [CuLV (µ-X)]2 , for which LA =N-(l-alanine methyl ester)-N'-[(2-pyridine-2-yl)methyl]oxalamide and LV =N-(l-valine methyl ester)-N'-[(2-pyridine-2-yl)methyl]oxalamide, for which X=Cl or Br. X-ray analysis shows that the geometry at each copper(II) ion is square pyramidal, whereas two pyramids share one base-to-apex edge with parallel basal planes. The complexes are linked by hydrogen bonds into infinite chains and are further linked into a 3D network. Susceptibility measurements show that the copper centers in the dimers are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled (|J|≈1-2 cm-1 ). From powder ESR spectroscopy, the g values and dx2-y2 orbital as the ground state of the unpaired electron are determined. The complexes show unusual anisotropic splitting and merging of the ESR lines if their single crystals rotate in a magnetic field. The observation of this partially resolved intradimer dipolar splitting enables estimation of the weak interdimer exchange interaction parameter |J'|≈0.001 cm-1 .

ABSTRACT

Novel Supramolecular fluorescence receptor derived from calix-system i.e. calix[4]resorcinarene bearing dansylchloride as fluorophore was designed and synthesized. The compound was purified by column chromatography and characterized by elemental analysis, NMR and Mass spectroscopy. Tetradansylated calix[4] resorcinarene (TDCR) shows a boat conformation with C(2)v symmetry. The complexation behaviour of metal cations [Ag(I), Cd(II), Co(II), Fe(III), Hg(II), Cu(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), U(VI) (1 × 10(-4) M)] with tetra dansylated calix[4]resorcinarene (1 × 10(-6) M) was studied by spectophotometry and spectrofluorometry. Red shift in the absorption spectra led us to conclude that there is strong complexation Fe(III), Co(II) and Cu(II) with TDCR. These metal cations also produce quenching with red shifts in the emission spectra. The maximum quenching in emission intensity was observed in the case of Fe(III) and its binding constant was also found to be significantly higher than that of Co(II) and Cu(II). Quantum yield of metal complexes of Fe(III) was found to be lower in comparison with Co(II) and Cu(II) complexes. Stern Volmer analysis indicates that the mechanism of fluorescence quenching is either purely dynamic, or purely static.
