ABSTRACT

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is an extremely rare neoplastic lesion with a predilection for aggressive local and recurrent behavior. The tumor tends to occur in the lungs of children and young adults, and although it can develop in older patients and other organs, this is extremely rare. Symptoms are nonspecific and depend on the location and size of the tumor. The gastrointestinal tract is rarely this mass's primary site of origin, and the cecum is an even rarer location. We present the case of an otherwise healthy 55-year-old female who presented with an acute abdomen and a mass in her abdomen; after successful surgery, she fully recovered. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor causing acute abdomen was the final diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

Rice cultivation in South America is undergoing several intensification processes for economic reasons that cause more rice to be planted continuously on the same soils. This intensification makes the long-term biological and economic sustainability of systems questionable. Among the most common problems that threaten sustainability in intensified systems is pest and disease pressure. In this context, the primary rice diseases were studied during a 6-year period in a long-term experiment of rice rotations established in 2012 in Uruguay. The experiment consisted of six rice rotations with other crops with different duration and intensification levels. The main disease found was stem rot and, to a lesser extent, aggregate sheath spot and sheath spot of rice. These diseases are of importance in intensified rice systems because they produce sclerotia that accumulate in soils. Disease occurrence was variable among years and rotations. Stem rot incidence increased rapidly in the experiment, reaching values close to 85% in the third year, while the severity varied each year. Sheath spot incidence and severity were low and varied with the year. Continuous rice (CR) reached the highest occurrence values for stem rot, but other systems with short pastures in rotation did not differ. Aggregate sheath spot and sheath spot were of importance only in CR and in some years. When levels of intensification were compared, systems with less time (25 to 60%) occupied with rice showed lower disease severity and higher yields. Comparing CR with rice rotation with pastures of different lengths (1 to 3 years), disease occurrence was higher in 2 of the 4 years analyzed. However, yields were consistently lower, denoting that other factors are influencing productivity. Stem and sheath diseases appear not to be a limiting factor in the medium term in intensified rice systems. Also, there are several alternatives of rice intensification incorporating crops and pastures in the rotation.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) consists of a group of diseases that imply a disorder among individuals connective tissue due to an altered collagen production. Fibrocartilaginous structures, support ligaments, disc and retrodiscal from the temporomandibular joint are composed primarily of collagen. Objective: Identify TMJ manifestations in patients with different types of EDS. Materials and Methods: a systematic review of the literature was performed on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases. Observational studies and case series reports published either in spanish or panish were included up until January 2023. Results: 12 articles met the inclusion criterial. The prevalence of temporomandibular disorders varies from 26.6% to 100%, being EDSh the most reported subtype, whereas disc displacement with or without reduction and joint hypermobility were the most reported joint disorders. Conclusion: Temporomandibular pathologies are common in patients with EDS, especially in those with the EDSh subtype.

Introducción: el síndrome del incisivo central maxilar medio único (SMMCI) es un trastorno de etiología desconocida, con base genética heterogénea, que se caracteriza por la erupción de un único incisivo central en el maxilar y que se puede relacionar con multitud de patologías y síndromes, entre los que destacan las alteraciones de la línea media, obstrucción nasal congénita, disfunción hipofisaria, talla baja y holoprosencefalia. Caso clínico: neonato mujer con síndrome dismórfico no filiado y obstrucción nasal congénita, que es diagnosticada de SMMCI tras consultar en repetidas ocasiones por cuadros de dificultad respiratoria y problemas para alimentarse. Conclusiones: el conocimiento de este raro síndrome es fundamental para la realización de un diagnóstico precoz por parte del equipo pediátrico y obstétrico, ya que un diagnóstico temprano es posible, mejorando la evaluación prenatal ecográfica, así como el adecuado manejo posnatal multidisciplinar posterior de nuestros pacientes.


Introduction: the Solitary Median Maxillary Central Incisor Syndrome (SMMCI) is a disorder of unknown etiology, with a heterogeneous genetic basis, characterized by the eruption of a single central incisor in the maxilla and that can be linked to various pathologies and syndromes, among which the alterations of the midline, congenital nasal obstruction, pituitary dysfunction, short stature and holoprosencephaly stand out. Clinical case: female newborns with unknown dysmorphic syndrome and congenital nasal obstruction, diagnosed with SMMCI after repeated consultations due to respiratory distress and feeding problems. Conclusions: understanding this rare syndrome is essential for an early diagnosis to be carried out by the pediatric and obstetric team, since it will improve the ultrasound prenatal assessment, as well as the adequate subsequent multidisciplinary postnatal patient management procedures.


Introdução: a síndrome do incisivo central maxilar médio solitário (SICMMS) é uma desordem de etiologia desconhecida, com base genética heterogênea, caracterizada pela erupção de um único incisivo central na maxila e que pode estar relacionada a uma infinidade de patologias e síndromes. onde se destacam alterações da linha média, obstrução nasal congênita, disfunção hipofisária, baixa estatura e holoprosencefalia. Caso clínico: recém-nascida com síndrome dismórfica de origem desconhecida e obstrução nasal congênita, diagnosticada com SICMSS após várias consultas por desconforto respiratório e problemas de alimentação. Conclusões: o conhecimento desta rara síndrome é essencial para que a equipe pediátrica e obstétrica possa fazer um diagnóstico precoce, pois ele pode melhorar a avaliação ultrassonográfica pré-natal, bem como o adequado manejo pós-natal multidisciplinar pós-natal dos pacientes.

ABSTRACT

Resumen Debido a la implementación de las colonoscopias como método de tamizaje, ha aumentado el diagnóstico de tumores neuroendocrinos rectales (TNER), la mayoría tiene un tamaño menor de 1 centímetro en el momento del diagnóstico, confinado a la submucosa y bien diferenciado; generalmente tienen un curso benigno y en su mayoría se tratan por métodos endoscópicos. Las metástasis son raras y dependen del tamaño tumoral y otros factores como la invasión a la submucosa, diseminación linfática y clasificación histológica, lo cual determinará el pronóstico y tratamiento a elección. Se presenta el caso de un tumor neuroendocrino rectal presentado en forma de pólipo durante un tamizaje endoscópico de rutina y una aproximación de la literatura actual.


Abstract Diagnosis of rectal neuroendocrine tumor (NET) has increased due to the implementation of colonoscopies as a screening method. Most rectal NETs are less than 1cm at diagnosis time, confined to the submucosa, and well differentiated. They generally have a benign course and are treated mainly using endoscopic methods. Metastases are rare and depend on tumor size and other factors such as submucosal invasion, lymphatic spread, and histologic classification, which will determine the prognosis and treatment. We present a case of a rectal neuroendocrine tumor as a polyp during routine endoscopic screening and a review of the current literature.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In June 2019, the Bolivian Ministry of Health reported a cluster of cases of hemorrhagic fever that started in the municipality of Caranavi and expanded to La Paz. The cause of these cases was unknown. METHODS: We obtained samples for next-generation sequencing and virus isolation. Human and rodent specimens were tested by means of virus-specific real-time quantitative reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction assays, next-generation sequencing, and virus isolation. RESULTS: Nine cases of hemorrhagic fever were identified; four of the patients with this illness died. The etiologic agent was identified as Mammarenavirus Chapare mammarenavirus, or Chapare virus (CHAPV), which causes Chapare hemorrhagic fever (CHHF). Probable nosocomial transmission among health care workers was identified. Some patients with CHHF had neurologic manifestations, and those who survived had a prolonged recovery period. CHAPV RNA was detected in a variety of human body fluids (including blood; urine; nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, and bronchoalveolar-lavage fluid; conjunctiva; and semen) and in specimens obtained from captured small-eared pygmy rice rats (Oligoryzomys microtis). In survivors of CHHF, viral RNA was detected up to 170 days after symptom onset; CHAPV was isolated from a semen sample obtained 86 days after symptom onset. CONCLUSIONS: M. Chapare mammarenavirus was identified as the etiologic agent of CHHF. Both spillover from a zoonotic reservoir and possible person-to-person transmission were identified. This virus was detected in a rodent species, O. microtis. (Funded by the Bolivian Ministry of Health and others.).

Introducción: el disrafismo espinal oculto comprende las anomalías congénitas caracterizadas por la fusión incompleta del tubo neural, en las que la lesión se encuentra cubierta por piel sin observarse exposición del tejido nervioso. Existen estigmas cutáneos que se asocian a su presencia, siendo los lipomas congénitos en la línea media posterior altamente sugerentes de lesión espinal. Su principal complicación es la asociación con el síndrome de médula anclada, que puede causar un daño neurológico irreversible. Caso clínico: recién nacida de sexo femenino, durante la exploración en Maternidad detectamos un estigma cutáneo del tipo lipoma en la región sacra sospechoso de disrafismo espinal oculto, confirmándose posteriormente, mediante estudio con ecografía y resonancia magnética, la presencia de lipomielomeningocele y médula anclada. Conclusiones: el reconocimiento de los marcadores cutáneos, que constituyen a veces la única manifestación de la enfermedad en pacientes asintomáticos, posibilitaría un diagnóstico precoz y manejo individualizado con posible corrección quirúrgica según el caso, que podría prevenir el daño neurológico irreversible asociado a la médula anclada.


Introduction: hidden spinal dysraphism involves congenital anomalies characterized by an incomplete fusion of the neural tube, where the lesion is covered by skin and the nervous tissue is not exposed. Some skin stigmas are linked with this spinal injury, mainly congenital lipomas in the posterior midline of the lesion. Hidden spinal dysraphism's main complication could be tethered cord syndrome, which can cause irreversible neurological damage. Clinical case: female newborn showing a lipoma-like skin stigma in the sacral region, looking like hidden spinal dysraphism, which was later confirmed through ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, which showed lipomyelomeningocele and a tethered cord. Conclusions: early detection of these skin markers is sometimes the only tool to early diagnosis and personalized treatment in asymptomatic patients. It enables a possible surgical remediation and may prevent the irreversible neurological damage linked to the tethered cord.


Introdução: o disrafismo espinhal oculto envolve anomalias congênitas caracterizadas por uma fusão incompleta do tubo neural, onde a lesão é coberta por pele e o tecido nervoso não fica exposto. Alguns estigmas de pele estão relacionados a essa lesão espinhal, principalmente lipomas congênitos na linha média posterior da lesão. A principal complicação do disrafismo espinhal oculto pode ser a síndrome da medula ancorada, a qual pode causar danos neurológicos irreversíveis. Caso clínico: recém-nascida apresenta estigma cutâneo semelhante a lipoma na região sacral, semelhante a disrafismo espinhal oculto, posteriormente confirmado por ultrassonografia e ressonância magnética, o que evidenciou lipomielomeningocele e medula ancorada. Conclusões: a detecção precoce desses marcadores cutâneos às vezes é a única ferramenta para o diagnóstico precoce e tratamento personalizado em pacientes assintomáticos. Permite uma possível correção cirúrgica e pode prevenir os danos neurológicos irreversíveis ligados à medula ancorada.

ABSTRACT

Phellinotus, a neotropical genus of wood-decay fungi commonly found on living members of the Fabaceae family, was initially described as containing two species, P. neoaridus and P. piptadeniae. The members of this genus, along with six other well-established genera and some unresolved lineages, are the current representatives of the 'phellinotus clade'. On the other hand, based on a two-loci phylogenetic analysis, some entities/lineages of the 'phellinotus clade' have been found in Fomitiporella s.l. In this work, we performed four-loci phylogenetic analyses and based on our results the genera of the 'phellinotus clade' are shown to be monophyletic groups. In addition to the natural groups confirmed as different genera, morphological revisions, phylogenetic relationships, and host distribution of different specimens resembling P. neoaridus and P. piptadeniae revealed three new species in the Phellinotus genus, referred to here as P. magnoporatus, P. teixeirae and P. xerophyticus. Furthermore, for P. piptadeniae a narrower species concept was adopted with redefined morphological characters and a more limited distribution range. Both P. neoaridus and P. teixeirae have a distribution range restricted to seasonally dry tropical forests in South America. Additionally, based on detailed morphological revisions Phellinus badius, Phellinus resinaceus, and Phellinus scaber are transferred to the Phellinotus genus. The geographic distribution and host range of the genus are then discussed.

ABSTRACT

This work is a first approach to the knowledge of insects and other aquatic macroinvertebrates of rice agroecosystems from eastern Uruguay. The composition of the groups collected may represent an approximation to the knowledge of the quality of water sources associated with Uruguayan rice production. Sampling of aquatic macroinvertebrates was carried out during the grain-filling stage in crops without insecticide use, in three localities of Treinta y Tres Department. In each crop, macroinvertebrates were collected with a Surber-type network at the inlet and outlet of water to and from the paddy field and a neighbouring control area. Differences in morphospecies composition were found according to the location and source of water. Insecta was the most represented class in macroinvertebrate samplings (41.5%). Diptera (59.9%), Hemiptera (16.3%) and Ephemeroptera (14.0%) were the most abundant orders within insects. The Richness and Shannon Diversity Indices were higher than those recorded for similar studies in Costa Rica, Italy and Australia.

ABSTRACT

Child stunting in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) decreased from 22.9% in 1990 to 9.6% in 2017. While stunting rates in the region were falling, access to electricity and refrigeration were on the rise. Despite a large body of evidence surrounding the effects of refrigeration on food consumption, and separately of the importance of food consumption for child health and nutrition, surprisingly few studies explore the potential effects of refrigeration on child nutrition. We studied the relationship between refrigeration and child nutrition outcomes using rich panel data for 1298 low-income households with children younger than 12 months at baseline in El Alto, Bolivia. We estimated the effects of refrigerator ownership on diet and nutrition outcomes using a difference-in-difference approach. Owning a refrigerator was associated with increased food expenditures and improved child nutrition. We found evidence that households that acquired a refrigerator were more likely to buy food that requires refrigeration, and children in households that acquired refrigerators were 0.17 standard deviations taller for their age after 2 years. We also found that refrigeration was associated with a 0.26 standard deviation decline in BMI-for-age, an effect driven by increased height rather than lower weight. These results suggest that refrigeration may play a role in explaining reductions in undernutrition observed in low- and middle-income countries in recent decades.

ANTECEDENTES: En 1926, Jones y Richardson describen por primera vez el tórax inestable. Desde entonces existe gran controversia sobre el manejo conservador comparado con el manejo quirúrgico. OBJETIVO: Dar a conocer los beneficios, las indicaciones y las contraindicaciones de la fijación temprana de fracturas costales en el tórax inestable. CONCLUSIÓN: La reducción abierta y la fijación temprana de fracturas costales en pacientes con tórax inestable ha demostrado ser un método útil, efectivo y seguro. BACKGROUND: In 1926, Jones and Richardson described flail chest for the first time. Since then, exist great controversy about conservative vs surgical approach. OBJECTIVE: Define the benefits, indications and contraindications of the early fixation of rib fractures in flail chest. CONCLUSION: The open reduction and early fixation of rib fractures for patients with flail chest has proven to be a useful, effective and safe method.

BACKGROUND: A large body of evidence shows that socioeconomic status (SES) is strongly associated to children's early development, health and nutrition. Few studies have looked at within sample differences across multiple measures of child nutrition and development. This paper examines SES gaps in child nutritional status and development in Bolivia using a representative sample of children 0-59 months old and a rich set of outcomes, including micronutrient deficiencies, anthropometic measures, and gross motor and communicative development. METHODS: We construct direct and proxy measures of living standards based on household expenditures and on ownership of assets combined with access to services and dwelling characteristics. The data for this study come from a nationally representative household survey in Bolivia that contains information on health, nutrition, and child development tests. We used a regression framework to assess the adjusted associations between child development outcomes and socioeconomic status, after controlling for other demographic factors that might affect child's development. The SES gap in child development was estimated by OLS. To explore when the development gaps between children in different socioeconomic groups start and how they change for children at different ages, we analyze the differences in outcomes between the poorest (Q1) and richest (Q5) quintiles by child's age by estimating kernel weighted local polynomial regressions of standardized scores for all child development indicators. RESULTS: There are large and statistically significant differences in all anthropometrics z-scores between children in Q5 and children in Q1: height for age (0.95 SD), weight for age (0.70 SD), and weight for height (0.21 SD). When we divide the sample into children at the bottom and top consumption quintiles the results show that 68.6% of children in the poorest quintile are anemic. While this percentage falls to 40.9% for children in the richest quintile, it remains high compared to other countries in the region. The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency is 29.9% for children in the richest quintile and almost 10 percentage points higher for those at the bottom quintile (39.0%); the prevalence of Iron deficiency for children in the top and bottom quintiles is 16.4% and 23.8%, respectively. Compared to the most deprived quintile, children in the wealthiest quintile are less likely to have iron deficiency, anemia, to be stunted, and to have a risk of delays in gross motor and communicative development. At age three, most of these gaps have increased substantially. Our findings are robust to the choice of socioeconomic measurement and highlight the need for targeted policies to reduce developmental gaps. CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the need for targeted public policies that invest in multiple dimensions of child development as early as possible, including health, nutrition and cognitive and verbal stimulation. From a policy perspective, the large socioeconomic gaps in nutrition outcomes documented here reinforce the need to strengthen efforts that tackle the multiple causes of malnutrition for the poorest.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: In Latin America, a rapid increase in obesity alongside persistent malnutrition has resulted in a double burden of disease that affects the most vulnerable segments of the population. Infant and young child feeding practices are important factors that affect both sides of the growth curve. Interventions such as behavioural change strategies and home fortification using products like small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) have the potential to reduce the presence of both these conditions, especially if they are implemented during the first 1000 days of life. This paper details the protocol for Sustained Programme for Improving Nutrition (SPOON), an innovative strategy to prevent stunting and reduce risk for obesity in children under 24 months old in high-poverty areas in Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: SPOON Guatemala is a three-arm randomised control trial: treatment group 1 will receive the SPOON behavioural change strategy and SQ-LNS, treatment group 2 will receive the SPOON behavioural change strategy and micronutrient powders; the control group will receive the standard of care provided by the Ministry of Health, which includes micronutrient powders. A modified formula of SQ-LNS has been especially developed for this trial. A total of 76 communities are included in the study and 1628 households with a pregnant woman in the third trimester or a child under 4.5 months were recruited at baseline. Baseline data were collected between September and November 2018. Follow-up data will be collected 2 years after the start of the intervention. The primary outcomes of interest are related to mothers' infant feeding knowledge and practice, and indicators of children's nutritional status and growth including height, weight, weight gain rate and prevalence of stunting, overweight, obesity and anaemia. After follow-up data have been collected, differences of simple means and regression models including covariates such as child's age and sex, characteristics of the primary caregiver and household socioeconomic indicators will be estimated. Heterogeneous effects will also be estimated within subgroups of age at exposure, sex, caregiver characteristics and household socioeconomic status. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This study was approved by the National Health Ethics Committee of the Ministry of Health of Guatemala (resolution 10-2018). Informed consent was obtained from all mothers and caregivers prior to enrolment in the programme. Results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed medical or public health journal, and disseminated internally at the Inter-American Development Bank, with the Government and Stakeholders in Guatemala and through international conferences and seminars. Resumen En materia de planeación local del desarrollo, la normatividad vigente asigna a los Consejos Comunales y Corregimentales de Planeación la función de formular los Planes de Desarrollo Local de las comunas de Medellín, instrumentos que deben ser refrendados por las Juntas Administradoras Locales, las cuales tienen la potestad de aprobar o rechazar el programa de desarrollo concertado con la comunidad. Este artículo busca presentar los mecanismos de participación ciudadana como una herramienta jurídica viable para que la comunidad incida en los ejercicios de planeación local y ejerza control social sobre la instancia de planeación local.


Abstract With regard to local development planning, the current regulations assign to the Community and Village Planning Councils the role of formulating the Local Development Plans of the communes of Medellin, instruments that must be endorsed by the Local Administrative Boards, who have the power to approve or to reject the community-based development program. This article seeks to present citizen participation mechanisms as a viable legal tool for the community to influence local planning exercises and exercise social control over the local planning body.

ABSTRACT

Piscirickettsia salmons, the causative agent of piscirickettsiosis, is genetically divided into two genomic groups, named after the reference strains as LF-89-like or EM-90-like. Phenotypic differences have been detected between the P. salmonis genogroups, including antibiotic susceptibilities, host specificities and pathogenicity. In this study, we aimed to develop a rapid, sensitive and cost-effective assay for the differentiation of the P. salmonis genogroups. Using an in silico analysis of the P. salmonis 16S rDNA digestion patterns, we have designed a genogroup-specific assay based on PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP). An experimental validation was carried out by comparing the restriction patterns of 13 P. salmonis strains and 57 field samples obtained from the tissues of dead or moribund fish. When the bacterial composition of a set of field samples, for which we detected mixtures of bacterial DNA, was analyzed by a high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene amplicons, a diversity of taxa could be identified, including pathogenic and commensal bacteria. Despite the presence of mixtures of bacterial DNA, the characteristic digestion pattern of the P. salmonis genogroups could be detected in the field samples without the need of a microbiological culture and bacterial isolation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: We assess the relationship between distance to a woman's assigned health clinic and obstetric care utilisation. DESIGN: We employ a cross-sectional study design using baseline data from the evaluation of a conditional cash transfer programme to promote greater utilisation of maternal and infant health services. Data were collected between December 2016 and January 2017. SETTING: The study is conducted in Ngäbe Buglé, the largest of Panama's three indigenous territories, where maternal mortality is three times the national average. PARTICIPANTS: We analyse a representative sample of 1336 indigenous women with a birth in the 12 months prior to the survey. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcomes include obstetric care utilisation measures for prenatal, childbirth and postpartum events. Secondary outcomes include reasons for not receiving prenatal care, alarming symptoms, child weight at birth and stillbirths or miscarriages. RESULTS: Compared with women in closest geographic proximity to a health centre (top quintile, Q1), women who lived farthest from a health centre (bottom quintile, Q5) had significantly lower obstetric care utilisation outcomes for critical prenatal, childbirth and postpartum events. Mothers in Q5 were 36 percentage points less likely to have had at least one prenatal care appointment in a hospital, health centre or clinic compared with mothers in Q1 (p<0.01), and 52 percentage points less likely to attend an institutional first appointment (p<0.01). The gap in institutional delivery and postnatal care between mothers in Q1 and Q5 was about 35 percentage points (p<0.01). All utilisation outcomes were negatively correlated with distance, and differences in obstetric care utilisation persisted even when controlling for household wealth, maternal age and maternal education. CONCLUSION: Distance is an important barrier to obstetric care utilisation, with women in more distant locations suffering significantly lower use of prenatal, childbirth and postpartum care compared with women in closer vicinity to a health establishment. Expanding the supply of healthcare and implementing demand side incentives to promote the use of health services in remote communities are relevant policies to reduce disparities in obstetric care utilisation. ABSTRACT

We experimentally evaluated the effects of in-kind team incentives on health worker performance in El Salvador, with 38 out of 75 community health teams randomly assigned to performance incentives over a 12-month period. All teams received monitoring, performance feedback and recognition for their achievements allowing us to isolate the effect of the incentive. While both treatment and control groups exhibit improvements in performance measures over time, the in-kind incentives generated significant improvements in community outreach, quality of care, timeliness of care, and utilization of maternal and child health services after 12 months. Gains were largest for teams at the bottom and top of the baseline performance distribution. We find no evidence of results being driven by changes in reporting or by shifting away effort from non-contracted outcomes. These results suggest that in-kind team incentives may be a viable alternative to monetary or individual incentives in certain contexts.

ABSTRACT

When a guild of species exploit the same limited resources, interspecific competition induces the exclusion of inferior competitors, in which case, interspecific recognition mechanisms are needed. Here, we address resource partitioning and interspecific competition among three main solitary parasitoid species attacking the same host resource, the aphid Sitobion avenae in wheat fields. Optimal host acceptance models predict that parasitoid species should prefer attacking unparasitized hosts when they are available in order to maximize their fitness, as already parasitized hosts are less valuable for laying eggs, especially for inferior competitors. Therefore, we expected the level of competition (multiparasitism) in the field to increase at low host density. By using a combination of taxonomical (determination) and molecular (PCR-based) approaches, we assessed the species of all parasitoid adults and immature stages within aphid hosts. Our results demonstrate that, early in the season, the multiparasitism rates were low, whereas they were high in the mid-late season, corresponding to an aphid density decrease over time. Moreover, parasitoid species could not have been exploiting host resources randomly and the better competitor, Aphidius ervi, seemed to be foraging preferentially on hosts already parasitized by the inferior competitor A. rhopalosiphi, even when unparasitized hosts were still available. This could be due to differences in their host detection capability, as species with a narrow host range may be better at detecting their hosts in comparison with species with a greater host range, such as A. ervi, with a greater host range within the guild. Our study suggests differences in the host exploitation of two prevalent parasitoid species through the main period of aphid colonization, which still allowed the coexistence of a third inferior competitor (A. rhopalosiphi) within the assemblage, in spite of some negative interactions (multiparasitism) and redundancies.
