ABSTRACT

Although non-front fanged snakes account for almost two-thirds of snake diversity, most studies on venom composition and evolution focus exclusively on front-fanged species, which comprise most of the clinically relevant accidents. Comprehensive reports on venom composition of non-front fanged snakes are still scarce for several groups. In this study, we address such shortage of knowledge by providing new insights about the venom composition among species of Phalotris, a poorly studied Neotropical dipsadid genus. Phalotris are known for their specialized venom delivery system and toxic venoms, which can cause life-threatening accidents in humans. We evaluate the venom-gland transcriptome of Phalotris, comparing the following three South American species: P. reticulatus for the Araucaria Pine forests, P. lemniscatus for the Pampa grasslands, and P. mertensi for the Brazilian Cerrado. Our results indicate similar venom profiles, in which they share a high expression level of Kunitz-type inhibitors (KUNZ). On the other hand, comparative analyses revealed substantial differences in the expression levels of C-type lectins (CTL) and snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMP). The diverse set of SVMP and CTL isoforms shows signals of positive selection, and we also identified truncated forms of type III SVMPs, which resemble type II and type I SVMPs of viperids. Additionally, we identified a CNP precursor hosting a proline-rich region containing a BPP motif resembling those commonly detected in viperid venoms with hypotensive activity. Altogether, our results suggest an evolutionary history favoring high expression levels of few KUNZ isoforms in Phalotris venoms, contrasting with a highly diverse set of SVMP and CTL isoforms. Such diversity can be comparable with the venom variability observed in some viperids. Our findings highlight the extreme phenotypic diversity of non-front fanged snakes and the importance to allocate greater effort to study neglected groups of Colubroidea.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to characterize and evaluate the in vitro bioactive properties of green banana pulp (GBPF), peel (GBPeF), and mixed pulp/peel flours M1 (90/10) and M2 (80/20). Lipid concentration was higher in GBPeF (7.53%), as were the levels of free and bound phenolics (577 and 653.1 mg GAE/100 g, respectively), whereas the resistant starch content was higher in GBPF (44.11%). Incorporating up to 20% GBPeF into the mixed flour had a minor effect on the starch pasting properties of GBPF. GBPeF featured rutin and trans-ferulic acid as the predominant free and bound phenolic compounds, respectively. GBPF presented different major free phenolics, though it had similar bound phenolics to GBPeF. Both M1 and M2 demonstrated a reduction in intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Consequently, this study validates the potential of green banana mixed flour, containing up to 20% GBPeF, for developing healthy foods and reducing post-harvest losses.

ABSTRACT

AIM: This study reports the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins subsequently diagnosed with Wilms tumour (WAGR syndrome). METHODS: Two monozygotic female twins were referred at age 2 months with bilateral corneal opacity. A diagnosis of Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia was made in both eyes of both twins. Physical examination and ultrasonography were carried out at 12 months of age to explore the possibility of WAGR-related anomalies, specifically Wilms tumour. DNA were isolated and subjected to whole exome sequencing. RESULTS: Peters' anomaly associated to aniridia in both eyes as well as bilateral Wilms tumour in both children were diagnosed. Exome analyses showed a large heterozygous deletion encompassing 6 648 473 bp in chromosome 11p13, using Integrative Genomics Viewer and AnnotSV software. CONCLUSION: WAGR syndrome is a rare contiguous gene deletion syndrome with a greater risk of developing Wilms tumour associated with Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia. However, co-occurrence of both anomalies was rarely reported in twins, and never in both eyes of monozygotic twins. Here, we report the bilateral association of Peters' anomaly and congenital aniridia in monozygotic twins with WAGR syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Difficult airway management represents a major challenge, requiring a careful approach, advanced technical expertise, and accurate protocols. The task force of the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology (SBA) presents a report with updated recommendations for the management of difficult airway in adults. These recommendations were developed based on the consensus of a group of expert anesthesiologists, aiming to provide strategies for managing difficulties during tracheal intubation. They are based on evidence published in international guidelines and opinions of experts. The report underlines the essential steps for proper difficult airway management, encompassing assessment, preparation, positioning, pre-oxygenation, minimizing trauma, and maintaining arterial oxygenation. Additional strategies for using advanced tools, such as video laryngoscopy, flexible bronchoscopy, and supraglottic devices, are discussed. The report considers recent advances in understanding crisis management, and the implementation seeks to further patient safety and improve clinical outcomes. The recommendations are outlined to be uncomplicated and easy to implement. The report underscores the importance of ongoing education, training in realistic simulations, and familiarity with the latest technologies available.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Scientometrics is the field concerned with measuring and analyzing academic literature, using specific metrics and data from bibliometric databases. Hematology is a broad area of science and medicine, from which several landmark scientific discoveries have emerged. Objective: The aim of this report is to provide a snapshot of the landscape of hematology research in Brazil, based on a comprehensive analysis of published studies in hematology whose authors were affiliated to Brazilian institutions from 1980 to 2020. Method: Articles, reviews and letters to the editor with at least one author affiliated to a Brazilian institution were retrieved from Incytes/Web of Science or Scopus databases. Importantly, only papers classified in the subject area "Hematology" by the embedded algorithms of each database were included. Results: Considering all published papers, Brazil is in the 22nd position, contributing with around 1.1% of papers in this period. A clear and sustained increase in publication output can be observed from the early 1990's to the present moment. Publicly-funded higher education institutions were the main contributors to the development and consolidation of the hematology scientific community, which has grown in diversity, with an increasing number of contributions from private institutions. In regard to funding, public agencies have been and remain by large as the most important funder of research in hematology in Brazil. Conclusion: We suggest that continuous monitoring of the temporal trends of some of the data compiled in our report could potentially contribute to a clearer picture of the development of hematology research in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Liotyphlops Peters, 1881 is an anomalepidid blindsnake genus that encompasses 12 species, widely distributed in Central and South America. In this study, we evaluate the taxonomic status of Liotyphlops sousai Santos & Reis, 2018, a species described based on a single specimen from the Atlantic Rainforest of southern Brazil, and after analyzing evidences based upon molecular systematics, external morphology and osteology, we propose its synonymy with Liotyphlops beui (Amaral, 1924), a common and widely distributed Anomalepidid species. We also provide comments and recommendations on the taxonomy of Liotyphlops, assessing the risks associated with describing a new species based on small type series.

ABSTRACT

Studies on reproductive biology have largely contributed to the understanding of snake ecology. However, detailed reproductive data are scarce for many groups, particularly blind snakes. Here, we describe the reproductive biology of Trilepida koppesi (Leptotyphlopidae), a widely distributed species in the savannas of south-central Brazil. We describe its macro- and microscopic reproductive anatomy, female reproductive cycle, potential clutch size, seasonal activity, and sexual dimorphism of a population from south-eastern Brazil. Males have plurilobulated testes. Spermiogenesis occurs in early spring (October), when gonads and kidneys show a textured surface, the sexual segment of the kidney is hypertrophied, and the ductus deferentia are opaque and packed with sperm. Females have only the right oviduct, which shows developed epithelium and uterine glands in spring. Mating likely occurs in spring (October–December), and females store sperm in infundibular receptacles until ovulation between late spring and early summer. Potential clutch size ranges from three to five eggs. Females grow larger than males. The synchrony between spermiogenesis and mating defines the male cycle as prenuptial, which is considered the ancestral state of Squamata. These results agree with the hypothesis of conservative parameters for the group.

ABSTRACT: The harvesting process is a current challenge for the commercial production of microalgae because the biomass is diluted in the culture medium. Several methods have been proposed to harvest microalgae cells, but there is not a consensus about the optimum method for such application. Herein, the methods based on sedimentation, flocculation, and centrifugation were evaluated on the recovery of Chlorella sorokiniana BR001 cultivated in a low-nitrogen medium. C. sorokiniana BR001 was cultivated using a low-nitrogen medium to trigger the accumulation of neutral lipids and neutral carbohydrates. The biomass of C. sorokiniana BR001 cultivated in a low-nitrogen medium showed a total lipid content of 1.9 times higher (23.8 ± 4.5%) when compared to the biomass produced in a high-nitrogen medium (12.3 ± 1.2%). In addition, the biomass of the BR001 strain cultivated in a low-nitrogen medium showed a high content of neutral carbohydrates (52.1 ± 1.5%). The natural sedimentation-based process was evaluated using a sedimentation column, and it was concluded that C. sorokiniana BR001 is a non-flocculent strain. Therefore, it was evaluated the effect of different concentrations of ferric sulfate (0.005 to 1 g L-1) or aluminum sulfate (0.025 to 0.83 g L-1) on the flocculation process of C. sorokiniana BR001, but high doses of flocculant agents were required for an efficient harvest of biomass. It was evaluated the centrifugation at low speed (300 to 3,000 g) as well, and it was possible to conclude that this process was the most adequate to harvest the non-flocculent strain C. sorokiniana BR001.


RESUMO: O processo de colheita é um desafio atual para a produção comercial de microalgas porque a biomassa é diluída no meio de cultivo. Diversos métodos têm sido propostos para coletar células de microalgas, porém não existe um consenso sobre um método ótimo para tal aplicação. Neste estudo, métodos baseados em sedimentação, floculação e centrifugação foram avaliados na recuperação de Chlorella sorokiniana BR001 cultivada em um meio com baixo teor de nitrogênio. C. sorokiniana BR001 foi cultivada em um meio com baixo teor de nitrogênio para induzir ao acúmulo de lipídeos e carboidratos neutros. A biomassa de C. sorokiniana BR001 cultivada em um meio com baixo teor de nitrogênio apresentou um teor de lipídeos 1,9 vezes superior (23,8 ± 4,5%), quando comparada à biomassa produzida em um meio com alto teor de nitrogênio (12,3 ± 1,2%). Adicionalmente, a biomassa da linhagem BR001 cultivada em um meio com baixo teor de nitrogênio apresentou alto teor de carboidratos neutros (52,1 ± 1,5%). O processo baseado em sedimentação natural foi avaliado utilizando uma coluna de sedimentação e concluiu-se que C. sorokiniana BR001 é uma linhagem não floculante. Portanto, o efeito de diferentes concentrações de sulfato férrico (0,005 a 1 g L-1) ou sulfato de alumínio (0,025 a 0,83 g L-1) foram avaliados no processo de floculação de C. sorokiniana BR001, mas altas doses de floculantes foram necessárias para uma colheita de biomassa eficiente. Também foi avaliada a centrifugação em baixa velocidade (300 a 3.000 g), e foi possível concluir que este processo constituiu o mais adequado para a colheita da linhagem não floculante C. sorokiniana BR001.

RESUMO: Fundamentos e objetivos: Apesar dos reconhecidos benefícios da prática de atividade física em pacientes com doença cardiovascular, acredita-se que pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca e fração de ejeção reduzida com comportamento não sedentário, mesmo que não pratiquem exercício físico regular, apresentem melhora da função cardiovascular e qualidade de vida em comparação a pacientes sedentários. Objetivo: comparar a capacidade funcional, função ventricular e quali-dade de vida de pacientes com insuficiência cardíaca sedentários e não sedentários. Métodos: Foram avaliados pacientes com Insuficiência Cardíaca e Fração de ejeção <50%, sendo compostos dois grupos, sedentários (n=45) e não sedentários (n=36), de acordo com o Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física. Os grupos foram submetidos à avaliação clínica e de qualidade de vida, teste de caminhada de Cooper, ecocardiograma e comparação pelo teste Qui-Quadrado para variáveis categóricas ou teste T de Student ou Mann-Whitney para variáveis contínuas. Nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Os grupos foram homogêneos em relação às características basais e etiologia. Os pacientes do Grupo Não Sedentário apre-sentaram menos sintomas limitantes (p<0,01), menor necessidade de digitálicos (p=0,02), melhor fração de encurtamento ventricular (p=0,03) e menor aumento do volume indexado do átrio esquerdo (p=0,004). Não foram encontradas diferen-ças no teste de caminhada entre os grupos. Houve maior prejuízo do quesito capacidade funcional da qualidade de vida do grupo Sedentário. ABSTRACT: Purpose: Despite the recognized benefits of practicing physical activity in patients with cardiovascular disease, it is believed that patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction with non-sedentary behavior may present an improvement in cardiovascular function and quality of life compared to sedentary patients, even if they do not practice regular physical ex-ercise. The aim of the present study was to compare functional capacity, systolic and diastolic cardiac function and quality of life of sedentary and non-sedentary patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction. Methods: Patients with heart failure and ejection fraction below 50% were divided into two groups, Sedentary (n = 45) and Non-Sedentary (n = 36), using the IPAQ questionnaire. These two groups were evaluated with clinical evaluation, quality of life SF-36 questionnaire, Cooper walking test and transthoracic echocardiography. They were compared by Chi-Square test for categorical variables or Test T or Man-Whitney for continuous variables; the level of significance adopted in the statistical analysis was 5%. Results: The groups were homogeneous in relation to the baseline characteristics and etiology. The Non-Sedentary Group had fewer patients with severe symptoms (p <0.01), less necessity of digitalis (p = 0.02) and better left ventricle fractional shorten-ing (p = 0.03). There was no apparent difference in the walk-test data between groups. Additionally, there was a greater impairment in the functional capacity of the SF-36 Questionnaire in the Sedentary Group. Conclusion: Considering the sample limitation, patients with heart failure and non-sedentary behavior have greater tolerability to exercise because they have fewer limiting symptoms and better quality of life in the functional capacity domain than sedentary patients.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This paper aims to evaluate the perception of residents of a rural quilombola community, about the impacts of distributed energy generation (DG) on the social, economic and environmental dimensions. The main challenge of the proposed model was to quantify the main perceptions of the target population of the research, as well as maintain the coherence of the specifications of the sustainability parameters. Diffuse modeling allows the transformation of linguistic variables into numerical values, the disadvantage is the dependence of the specialist to construct the rules. The methodology used was the application of a semi-structured questionnaire, and the results were used as a reference to build the discourse domain of the input variables of the Fuzzy inference system, which generated an index of 54.1% classified in the category partially sustainable. Specifically, the economic and social dimensions obtained an index of 46.7% and the environmental dimension of 69%. From the perspective of the perception of the respondents, the variables with the greatest impact were: landscape change (LCH) 92%, environmental awareness (EA) and reduction of global warming (GW) with values of both 69%. The variable of the most prominent economic dimension was: cost of the system with a value of 69%. In the social dimension, the variables with the greatest impact were: Community Acceptability (AC), Expansion of the support network (ESN) with values of 69%. The proposed model allowed us to interpret the respondents' perception, and can be used to generate effective actions that solve the identified demands.

ABSTRACT

Approximately 140 snake species are known to occur in the Atlantic Forest with nearly half being endemic to this ecoregion. However, the Atlantic forest is one of the most threatened tropical ecoregions, with only 16% of its original area remaining as forest. This extensive habitat loss must have had a negative effect on its snake fauna. Indeed, 53% of the threatened snakes of Brazil occur in the Atlantic forest. Therefore, basic natural history information that can potentially contribute to the conservation of Atlantic forest snakes are urgently needed. Here the natural history of a snake assemblage at Etá Farm region, Sete Barras municipality, south-eastern Brazil is described, and a visual guide and an identification key provided that can be used by researchers and local people to identify snakes from this region. Most of the species found in the field use both open areas and forests, are primarily terrestrial, present diurnal activity, and include frogs in their diet. A higher number of enlarged follicles, eggs, and/or embryos were recorded during the warm and rainy season. Seventeen different types of defensive tactics were recorded in the species found in the field. This study provides useful information for understanding the structure of snake assemblages of the Atlantic Forest and is potentially useful for conservation assessments and for designing conservation plans

ABSTRACT

Approximately 140 snake species are known to occur in the Atlantic Forest with nearly half being endemic to this ecoregion. However, the Atlantic forest is one of the most threatened tropical ecoregions, with only 16% of its original area remaining as forest. This extensive habitat loss must have had a negative effect on its snake fauna. Indeed, 53% of the threatened snakes of Brazil occur in the Atlantic forest. Therefore, basic natural history information that can potentially contribute to the conservation of Atlantic forest snakes are urgently needed. Here the natural history of a snake assemblage at Etá Farm region, Sete Barras municipality, south-eastern Brazil is described, and a visual guide and an identification key provided that can be used by researchers and local people to identify snakes from this region. Most of the species found in the field use both open areas and forests, are primarily terrestrial, present diurnal activity, and include frogs in their diet. A higher number of enlarged follicles, eggs, and/or embryos were recorded during the warm and rainy season. Seventeen different types of defensive tactics were recorded in the species found in the field. This study provides useful information for understanding the structure of snake assemblages of the Atlantic Forest and is potentially useful for conservation assessments and for designing conservation plans

ABSTRACT

Accurate and detailed species distribution maps are fundamental for documenting and interpreting biological diversity. For snakes, an ecologically diverse group of reptiles, syntheses and detailed data on distribution patterns remain scarce. We present the first comprehensive collection of detailed, voucher-based, point-locality, range maps for all described and documented Brazilian snakes, with the major aim of mitigating the Wallacean shortfall and as a contribution towards a better understanding of this rich, threatened, and poorly studied megadiverse fauna. We recorded a total of 412 snake species in Brazil on the basis of an extensive and verified point-locality database of 163,498 entries and 75,681 unique records (available here as Online Supporting Information). Our results reveal previously undocumented patterns of distribution, sampling effort, richness, and endemism levels, resulting in a more objective view of snake diversity in the Neotropics. Apart from these achievements, we understand that the most relevant and enduring contribution of the present atlas is to stimulate researchers to publish corrections, additions, and new discoveries.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Snakebites by aglyphous or opisthoglyphous snakes are common in Brazil. We report a case of snakebite by the opisthoglyphous Erythrolamprus aesculapii. The victim presented with pain, edema, and bleeding at the bite site, along with erythema, similar to a Bothrops envenomation. In this type of snakebite, if the snake is not brought to the hospital, the victim may receive unnecessary serum therapy, with the risk of adverse reactions to the antivenom. The possibility of reducing after-effects with anti-inflammatory drugs and early antibiotic therapy for secondary infection need to be further investigated, preferably in multicenter studies, while observing good clinical practice.

RESUMO: O desenvolvimento de equipamentos eficientes e específicos para a secagem de microalgas é essencial para a exploração comercial destes microrganismos que apresentam alta taxa de crescimento e grande potencial biotecnológico. Os custos de secagem da biomassa de microalgas ainda são elevados e precisam ser reduzidos para a produção de compostos com baixo valor agregado. Portanto, realizou-se o estudo da secagem da microalga Scenedesmus obliquus BR003 utilizando baixas temperaturas. S. obliquus BR003 é uma microalga robusta que apresenta alta produtividade de lipídeos. Em escala laboratorial, observou-se que a biomassa de S. obliquus BR003 foi rapidamente seca em baixas temperaturas entre 50 e 60 ºC. Um secador a gás foi utilizado para avaliar a secagem da biomassa de S. obliquus BR003 em escala piloto. A biomassa foi seca em menos de 24 h utilizando o secador a gás, entretanto, a elevada umidade da biomassa da microalga requereu uma maior renovação de ar na câmara do secador. A análise de fluidodinâmica computacional do secador a gás mostrou dois parâmetros importantes para se obter uma maior efetividade de transferência de calor e massa durante o processo de secagem da biomassa de microalga. Concluiu-se que um secador a gás adequado, para a biomassa de microalgas, deve possuir múltiplos pontos de injeção de ar, e um eficiente sistema de circulação e renovação de ar no interior da câmara de secagem.


ABSTRACT: Development of efficient and specific equipment to dry microalgae is essential for commercial use of these microorganisms that show high growth rates and biotechnological potential. Drying costs of microalgae biomass are still high and they should be reduced for the production of compounds with low added value. Therefore, we evaluated the drying process of the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus BR003 using low temperatures. S. obliquus BR003 is a robust microalga that shows high lipid productivity. At laboratory scale, it was observed that the biomass of S. obliquus BR003 was rapidly dried at low temperatures between 50 and 60 ° C. A gas dryer was used to evaluate the drying of the biomass of S. obliquus BR003 on a pilot-scale. The biomass was dried in less than 24 h using the gas dryer; however, the high moisture of the microalga biomass required a higher air renovation in the drying chamber. Computational fluid dynamics analysis of the gas dryer showed two important parameters to achieve greater effectiveness of heat and mass transfer rates during the drying process of the microalga biomass. It was concluded that a gas dryer suitable for the microalgae biomass should have multiple air injection points, and an efficient circulation and renovation system of air inside the drying chamber.

ABSTRACT

The official methods adopted by different worldwide agencies for determination of water content of Brazil nut is the dissication in drying oven at 105 ºC during 3 or 24 hours and dissication until constant height of samples. However, applying these methods for Brazil nut, may result in inconsistent values, possibly due to lipid oxidation. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the oven-drying methods, recommended by the official agencies, and to determine the oven-drying correct parameters, such as temperature and exposure time. For this purpose, samples were placed in drying ovens set at 85, 90, 95 and 105 °C and weighed hourly, between 3 and 12 hours and after 24 hours of exposure, and the results were compared to Karl Fisher titration, considered as a reference method in this study. The temperature of 105 °C, for any exposure time, resulted in overestimated water content compared to reference method. However, there was no difference between the water content values obtained by oven-drying assay at 90 °C for 6 hours and by the reference method, allowing to conclude that the determination of water content in Brazil nut samples, in drying oven under these conditions, can be performed with the same accuracy and precision of the Karl Fischer method.


Os métodos oficiais adotados por diferentes órgãos ao redor do mundo para a determinação do teor de água da castanha-do-brasil são a dessecação em estufa a 105 °C por 3 ou 24 horas e a dessecação até peso constante. Contudo, a aplicação destes métodos para a castanha-do-brasil pode resultar em valores inconsistentes, possivelmente pela oxidação dos lipídeos. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi o de avaliar a acurácia dos métodos de estufa, recomendados pelas agências oficiais, bem como determinar os parâmetros adequados do método, como temperatura e tempo de exposição. Para isto, amostras foram colocadas em estufas ajustadas em 85, 90, 95 e 105 °C e pesadas a cada hora, entre 3 e 12 horas e ao final de 24 horas de exposição, e os resultados foram comparados com aqueles obtidos por titulação de Karl Fisher, considerado como método de referência neste estudo. A temperatura de 105 °C, para quaisquer tempos de exposição, resultou na superestimação do teor de água comparado ao método de referência. Não houve diferença entre os valores para o teor de água obtidos em estufa a 90 °C por 6 horas e o método de referência, permitindo concluir que a determinação do teor de água em amostras de castanha-do-brasil, em estufas nestas condições, pode ser executada com a mesma acurácia e precisão do método de Karl Fisher.
