ABSTRACT

Individuals with an intellectual developmental disorder are four times more likely to have a co-occurring mental health diagnosis, as compared to the general population, and 60%-80% of individuals with IDDs have experienced at least one form of abuse. However, counselors receive little training to adequately help this population. In this article, counseling considerations related to individuals who have intellectual development disorder are discussed, with a particular focus on the presence of trauma in this population. Trauma-focused treatment, potential mental health issues, counseling considerations, general issues related to counseling this population, and common associated mental health experiences among this population are addressed. Specific evidence-based counseling approaches, modifications to counseling, and best practices that can be helpful when counseling this population are presented. Due to the unique challenges that individuals with IDDs face, it is essential that counselors address the counseling and mental health needs of this population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Microvascular dysfunction plays an important role in the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, no mechanistic link between systemic microvasculature and congestion, a central feature of the syndrome, has yet been investigated. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate capillary-interstitium fluid exchange in HFpEF, including lymphatic drainage and the potential osmotic forces exerted by any hypertonic tissue Na+ excess. METHODS: Patients with HFpEF and healthy control subjects of similar age and sex distributions (n = 16 per group) underwent: 1) a skin biopsy for vascular immunohistochemistry, gene expression, and chemical (water, Na+, and K+) analyses; and 2) venous occlusion plethysmography to assess peripheral microvascular filtration coefficient (measuring capillary fluid extravasation) and isovolumetric pressure (above which lymphatic drainage cannot compensate for fluid extravasation). RESULTS: Skin biopsies in patients with HFpEF showed rarefaction of small blood and lymphatic vessels (p = 0.003 and p = 0.012, respectively); residual skin lymphatics showed a larger diameter (p = 0.007) and lower expression of lymphatic differentiation and function markers (LYVE-1 [lymphatic vessel endothelial hyaluronan receptor 1]: p < 0.05; PROX-1 [prospero homeobox protein 1]: p < 0.001) compared with control subjects. In patients with HFpEF, microvascular filtration coefficient was lower (calf: 3.30 [interquartile range (IQR): 2.33 to 3.88] l × 100 ml of tissue-1 × min-1 × mm Hg-1 vs. 4.66 [IQR: 3.70 to 6.15] µl × 100 ml of tissue-1 × min-1 × mm Hg-1; p < 0.01; forearm: 5.16 [IQR: 3.86 to 5.43] l × 100 ml of tissue-1 × min-1 × mm Hg-1 vs. 5.66 [IQR: 4.69 to 8.38] µl × 100 ml of tissue-1 × min-1 × mm Hg-1; p > 0.05), in keeping with blood vascular rarefaction and the lack of any observed hypertonic skin Na+ excess, but the lymphatic drainage was impaired (isovolumetric pressure in patients with HFpEF vs. control subjects: calf 16 ± 4 mm Hg vs. 22 ± 4 mm Hg; p < 0.005; forearm 17 ± 4 mm Hg vs. 25 ± 5 mm Hg; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral lymphatic vessels in patients with HFpEF exhibit structural and molecular alterations and cannot effectively compensate for fluid extravasation and interstitial accumulation by commensurate drainage. Reduced lymphatic reserve may represent a novel therapeutic target.

ABSTRACT

Herbaria contain a cumulative sample of the world's flora, assembled by thousands of people over centuries. To capitalize on this resource, we conducted a specimen-based analysis of a major clade in the grass tribe Andropogoneae, including the dominant species of the world's grasslands in the genera Andropogon, Schizachyrium, Hyparrhenia and several others. We imaged 186 of the 250 named species of the clade, georeferenced the specimens and extracted climatic variables for each. Using semi- and fully automated image analysis techniques, we extracted spikelet morphological characters and correlated these with environmental variables. We generated chloroplast genome sequences to correct for phylogenetic covariance and here present a new phylogeny for 81 of the species. We confirm and extend earlier studies to show that Andropogon and Schizachyrium are not monophyletic. In addition, we find all morphological and ecological characters are homoplasious but variable among clades. For example, sessile spikelet length is positively correlated with awn length when all accessions are considered, but when separated by clade, the relationship is positive for three sub-clades and negative for three others. Climate variables showed no correlation with morphological variation in the spikelet pair; only very weak effects of temperature and precipitation were detected on macrohair density.This article is part of the theme issue 'Biological collections for understanding biodiversity in the Anthropocene'.

ABSTRACT

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Autopolyploidy, genome duplication within a single lineage, can result in multiple cytotypes within a species. Geographic distributions of cytotypes may reflect the evolutionary history of autopolyploid formation and subsequent population dynamics including stochastic (drift) and deterministic (differential selection among cytotypes) processes. Here, we used a population genomic approach to investigate whether autopolyploidy occurred once or multiple times in Andropogon gerardii, a widespread, North American grass with two predominant cytotypes. METHODS: Genotyping by sequencing was used to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in individuals collected from across the geographic range of A. gerardii. Two independent approaches to SNP calling were used: the reference-free UNEAK pipeline and a reference-guided approach based on the sequenced Sorghum bicolor genome. SNPs generated using these pipelines were analyzed independently with genetic distance and clustering. KEY RESULTS: Analyses of the two SNP data sets showed very similar patterns of population-level clustering of A. gerardii individuals: a cluster of A. gerardii individuals from the southern Plains, a northern Plains cluster, and a western cluster. Groupings of individuals corresponded to geographic localities regardless of cytotype: 6x and 9x individuals from the same geographic area clustered together. CONCLUSIONS: SNPs generated using reference-guided and reference-free pipelines in A. gerardii yielded unique subsets of genomic data. Both data sets suggest that the 9x cytotype in A. gerardii likely evolved multiple times from 6x progenitors across the range of the species. Genomic approaches like GBS and diverse bioinformatics pipelines used here facilitate evolutionary analyses of complex systems with multiple ploidy levels.

UNLABELLED: • PREMISE OF THE STUDY: Information about geographic distribution of cytotypes can provide insight into the origin and maintenance of autopolyploid complexes and builds a foundation for understanding cytotype differentiation and the dynamics of mixed-ploidy populations. Here, we investigate environmental correlates of the geographic distributions of 6x and 9x individuals in the ecologically dominant grass Andropogon gerardii to examine the role of climate in shaping patterns of cytotype distribution in this species.• METHODS: Flow cytometry was used to estimate ploidy level in 352 individuals from 32 populations across North America. Ecological differentiation of cytotypes was tested by relating BIOCLIM variables to cytotype distribution using principal components analysis and partial linear regression.• KEY RESULTS: Broad geographic sampling confirmed two primary cytotypes-6x (hexaploid) and 9x (enneaploid)-and revealed that 9x plants are more common than previously thought. Enneaploids occur frequently in the southern portions of the range, with hexaploids dominating in northern regions. Mixed-ploidy populations were common (46.9%). Principal components analysis and partial linear regression indicated that reduced summer precipitation and increased variation in diurnal and seasonal temperature range were significant predictors of the frequency of 9x plants in a population.• CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that (1) geographic distribution of 6x and 9x individuals is nonrandom; (2) environmental variables are associated with cytotype distribution in A. gerardii; and (3) nearly half of populations surveyed include both 6x and 9x individuals. The persistence of mixed-ploidy populations may reflect a combination of recurrent polyploid formation and the prevalence of clonal reproduction.

ABSTRACT

We addressed the question: "Are short-term, leaf-level measurements of photosynthesis correlated with long-term patterns of plant success?" in a productive grassland where interspecific competitive interactions are important. To answer this question, seasonal patterns of leaf-level photosynthesis were measured in 27 tallgrass prairie species growing in sites that differed in species composition and productivity due to differences in fire history. Our specific goals were to assess the relationship between gas exchange under field conditions and success (defined as aerial plant cover) for a wide range of species, as well as for these species grouped as dominant and sub-dominant grasses, forbs, and woody plants. Because fire increases productivity and dominance by grasses in this system, we hypothesized that any relationship between photosynthesis and success would be strongest in annually burned sites. We also predicted that regardless of fire history, the dominant species (primarily C4 grasses) would have higher photosynthetic rates than the less successful species (primarily C3 grasses, forbs and woody plants). Because forbs and woody species are less abundant in annually burned sites, we expected that these species would have lower photosynthetic rates in annually burned than in infrequently burned sites. As expected, the dominant C4␣grasses had the highest cover on all sites, relative to␣other growth forms, and they had the highest maximum and seasonally averaged photosynthetic rates (17.6 ± 0.42 µmol m-2 s-1). Woody species had the lowest average cover as well as the lowest average photosynthetic rates, with subdominant grasses and forbs intermediate in both cover and photosynthesis. Also as predicted, the highest overall photosynthetic rates were found on the most productive annually burned site. Perhaps most importantly, a positive relationship was found between leaf-level photosynthesis and cover for a core group of species when data were combined across all sites. These data support the hypothesis that higher instantaneous rates of leaf-level photosynthesis are indicative of long-term plant success in this grassland. However, in contrast to our predictions, the subdominant grasses, forbs and woody species on the annually burned site had higher photosynthetic rates than in the less frequently burned sites, even though their average cover was lower on annually burned sites, and hence they were less successful. The direct negative effect of fire on plant cover and species-specific differences in the availability of resources may explain why photosynthesis was high but cover was low in some growth forms in annually burned sites.
