ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the stability of removable implant-supported maxillary overdentures with fixed complete dentures and conventional dentures. METHODS: Four types of complete dentures were tested: conventional complete dentures; overdentures retained by a male resilient attachment system; overdentures retained by a combination of clip bar and attachment system; and fixed complete dentures. Each group was placed in the posterior and anterior region and the stability was recorded by measuring the vertical displacement of the prosthesis. RESULTS: There was a difference in the vertical movement of the prosthesis according to the type of system. The results showed that the behavior of the overdenture retained by a combination of a clip bar and attachment system is comparable with the stabilization of an implant-retained fixed complete denture. CONCLUSIONS: Overdentures retained by a combination of a clip bar and attachment presented better stability and retention capacity under our experimental conditions, close to that of the positive control (fixed complete denture), with the advantages of removable overdentures.

ABSTRACT

The production and properties of a rhamnolipid-type biosurfactant, synthesized by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa LBM10 strain, isolated from a southern coastal zone in Brazil, were investigated. The assays were conducted in a rotary shaker at 30 degrees C and 180 rpm for a period of 96 h. Soybean oil and sodium nitrate were the best sources of carbon and nitrogen, respectively. A nitrogen-limiting condition (C/N ratio of 100) was favorable to biosurfactant production. The formation of stable emulsions was better in saline concentrations below 0.5%, pH values in the range from 6 to 9 and temperatures in the range from 35 to 40 degrees C, maintaining about 80% of its original activity for salinity up to 3% and 120 min of exposure at 100 degrees C. The biosurfactant may be produced with this microorganism using renewable substrates that are readily available, reaching values of 1.42 g l(-1) measured as rhamnose. This biosurfactant has interesting and useful properties for many industrial applications.

ABSTRACT

Surgery represents the best treatment for early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In selected cases, even locally-advanced cancers may be suitable for surgical treatment. The combination of chemotherapy (with or without radiotherapy) and surgery has proved potentially useful in improving survival, but pre-operative treatment may represent a risk factor for the onset of post-operative complications. Studies performed to date indicate the need for further multidisciplinary research with a view to identifying more advantageous treatment modalities, particularly for locally-advanced NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

Complex formation between horse heart ferricytochrome c and large three-dimensional polyanions has been investigated, in order to study the influence of surface electrostatic interactions on the structural and redox properties of cytochrome c. Cytochrome c binds the large heteropolytungstates (NaSb9W21O86)18- and (KAs4W40O140)27- with a 1/1 polyanion/cytochrome c ratio, and the smaller ion (SiW11O39)8- with a 2/1 ratio. Upon complexation, cytochrome c undergoes structural changes that are dependent on the size and charge of the polyanion, and on the pH and ionic strength of the medium. Three different forms of complexed cytochrome c have been characterized by optical and EPR spectroscopies, in the pH range 6.5-8: an N form, close to the native structure, an A form, analogous to cytochrome c in acidic medium, and a novel B form in which the heme pocket is open but the iron remains low-spin. The redox potential of cytochrome c is lowered to 250-220 mV (vs. NHE) in the N form, and to 80 mV in the B form.
