ABSTRACT

Objective. To determine that the quality, measured by the Hirsch index, of Spanish authors who publish in international radiology journals with an impact factor (AJR, European Radiology, Investigative Radiology, Radiographics, and Radiology) is higher of those who publish only in Spanish journals or in both types of journals. Material and methods. We analyzed a total of 6 radiology journals, including 5 international journals and one national (Radiología). We selected Spanish authors of original articles published in 2008 and 2009 who were working at Spanish centers when their articles were written. We classified the authors into three categories: a) those who published only in international journals; b) those who published only in Radiología, and c) those who published in Radiología and in an international journal. We calculated the Hirsch index score for each author and analyzed the groups using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test, the Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test, and the median test to evaluate the differences. Results. Of the 440 identified Spanish authors as having published in the two-year period, 248 (56%) published only in Radiología, 172 (39%) only in international journals, and 20 (5%) in both. The mean Hirsch index score for the group of authors who published only in Radiología (1.15±2.35) was lower than for those who published only in international journals (2.59±3.39). Authors who published in both international journals and Radiología had the highest score on the Hirsch index (4.1±3.89) (P<.001). Conclusions. The Spanish authors with the highest prestige and quality publish both in international journals and in Radiología (AU)

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to analyse the citation patterns and impact and immediacy indicators of the Farmacia Hospitalaria journal during the period 2001-2005. METHOD: An analysis of citations chosen from 101 Spanish health science journals was carried out in order to determine the citing and cited journals and the national and international impact and immediacy indicators. A similar methodology used by Thomson ISI in Science Citation Index (SCI) and Journal Citation Reports (JRC) was applied. RESULTS: Farmacia Hospitalaria made 1,370 citations to 316 different journals. The percentage of self-citations was 9%. The national impact factor increased from 0.178 points in 2001 to 0.663 points in 2005 while the international impact factor increased from 0.178 to 0.806 for the same period. CONCLUSIONS: The analysis of citation patterns demonstrates the multidisciplinary nature of Farmacia Hospitalaria and a significant growth in the impact indicators over recent years. These indicators are higher than those of some other pharmacy journals included in Journal Citation Reports. Self-citation was not excessive and was similar to that of other journals.

ABSTRACT

Although the English language is considered nowadays as the international language of medical publications, some important Spanish journals with impact factor in the Journal Citation Reports as Neurologia, they bet for the publication in Spanish. Neurologia is the official publication of the Sociedad Española de Neurología and there is the conviction that you can have a Spanish language journal with a high quality and a strong impact. Its presence in the most important international data bases and the possibility of free access to its contents through Internet guarantees its proper diffusion around the world. From the point of view of citation, the repercussion of the language for Neurologia, is reflected in the fact that the 46,8 % of the citations that receive are from journals that are published in Spanish. The main factor to improve the impact of the journal is the quality of their papers, as well as the fulfillment of the international rules about periodical publications, the punctuality in its edition and distribution, the presence in national and international bibliographical data bases, its free diffusion in Internet, the training of its researchers and their sensitivity to consult and cite articles that have been published in quality Spanish journals, when necessary.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

From a bibliometric perspective, we reviewed: 1) the scientific activity in the field of diagnostic imaging in Spain, based on the percentage of presentations at the SERAM congresses (1994-1998) later published as articles in scientific journals. The value obtained (15%) is low in comparison with other international congresses, although similar to values for other national congresses in radiology. Both in national and international congresses, collaboration among radiologists from different institutions or countries and between radiologists and clinicians increases the percentage of publications, thus confirming the positive correlation between collaboration and scientific productivity. 2) We also examined the relationship between scientific productivi ty and the hierarchical structure of Spanish radiology departments (resident, associate, section chief, and department chief). Hierarchical groupings with the participation of residents were found to be more stable from year to year in scientific production, and the group residents + associates had the highest percentage of authorship (21%). 3) Finally, we reviewed the literature to assess the visibility and dissemination of the journal Radiología, estimating the impact factor that the journal would obtain if it were included in the Journal Citation Reports (JRC) database. We emphasize the importance of the inclusion of Radiología both in Medline, the best known and most widely used source of information in the health sciences, and in the JCR

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Analyze the different contribution of hierarchical categories in the papers published by radiologists of hospitals belonging to Comunidad Valenciana along the period 1994-2001, as well as their distribution in the different journals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the recovery of the papers sample we have designed specific search profiles for EMI and Medline databases. Hierarchical category of the authors was identified through personal interviews. RESULTS: We have analyzed 417 works, with 1,321 authors distributed in the following form: chief of service, 8.8%; chief of section, 12.4%; assistant physician, 50.7%, and resident, 28%. Hierarchical groupings with participation of residents were more consistent for publishing papers along all the study period (1994-2001). Higher percentage of papers (21%) corresponded to <> grouping. Radiología was the most productive journal (42% papers). All results were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Radiodiagnosis residents of Comunidad Valenciana hospitals showed an active participation in research papers published along the period 1994-2001, in collaboration with the rest of the hierarchical categories, basically with the assistant physician. Assistant physicians contributed most of papers. Chief of section and chief of department contributed fifth of papers.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Gallstone ileus is an uncommon cause of mechanical obstruction. Its high mortality rate can be reduced with earlier diagnosis and treatment. We wanted to determine whether ultrasound (US) performed after plain film increases the sensitivity for the preoperative diagnosis. METHODS: We performed a 5-year retrospective analysis of radiologic and sonographic results of 23 patients who had surgery because of gallstone ileus. RESULTS: Rigler's triad was identified by plain abdominal film in two patients (9%) and by US in 16 patients (69%). Plain abdominal film contributed to a definitive diagnosis in four cases and to a probable diagnosis in six cases (sensitivities of 17% for definitive diagnoses and 43% for definitive and probable diagnoses). US confirmed the diagnosis in six cases of probable gallstone ileus and provided the diagnosis in seven of 13 patients without suspected gallstone ileus based on plain abdominal film. The best results were obtained by combining plain film and US findings, with sensitivities of 74% for definitive diagnoses and 96% for definitive plus probable diagnoses. CONCLUSION: The preoperative diagnosis of gallstone ileus significantly increases by combining plain film and US findings.
