ABSTRACT

Invasive plants threaten biodiversity worldwide and effective management must control the target invader while conserving biodiversity. Herbicide is often used to control invasive plants, but potential negative impacts on biodiversity have led to spot spraying being recommended over boom spraying to minimize the exposure of nontarget species to chemicals. We examined the influence of herbicide application methods on off-target plant communities in threatened temperate grasslands of southeastern Australia, where spraying with the broadleaf herbicide fluroxypr is commonly used to control St. John's wort, Hypericum perforatum L. It is well established that fluroxypr effectively controls H. perforatum but few studies have examined its impact on native forbs. A spray drift experiment using water-sensitive cards indicated that ground surface coverage was higher for spot spraying (91%-99%) than for boom spraying (5%-31%). We established a replicated, 3-year, before-after-control-impact experiment across 48 1-m2 quadrats to determine how three herbicide application methods (spot spray, fine boom and coarse boom) affected nontarget native forbs, the group most likely to be affected by broadleaf herbicides. This experiment was conducted in grasslands where H. perforatum was almost absent, so responses would reflect the direct impacts of the chemical, rather than structural changes resulting from removal of the target invader. Spot spraying decreased the probability of occurrence of native leguminous forbs, while increasing the occurrence of exotic leguminous forbs and the richness of all exotic species and exotic annual forbs. Spot spraying reduced the occurrence of the native Desmodium varians and the abundance of the native Chrysocephalum apiculatum. During this 3-year study, native species appeared to be impacted either directly by fluroxypr or indirectly by increased competition with exotic species. Where herbicide application is deemed crucial in these grasslands, we recommend boom spraying when H. perforatum density is moderate to high. Spot spraying should only be used when the density of H. perforatum is very low. Given the regional variation in H. perforatum density, the spatial scale of invasion, soil depth, and conservation values, we present a decision tree to assist managers in evaluating the costs and benefits of chemical control, indicating situations where alternative or modified methods could be used.

ABSTRACT

Courtship displays are often energetically and temporally costly as well as highly conspicuous to predators. Selection should therefore favour signalling tactics that minimize courtship costs while maintaining or increasing signal attractiveness. In fiddler crabs, males court females by waving their one greatly enlarged claw in a highly conspicuous and costly display. Here, we investigate whether courting males adjust their wave rate, and therefore the cost of courtship, to the current level of competition. We show that display rate increases as competition increases and that when competition is removed, males reduce their display rate by 30 per cent. These results suggest that male fiddler crabs actively reduce the cost of courtship by adjusting their wave rate in response to the immediate level of competition.

If sexually selected traits reveal a male's heterozygosity or condition to females, then such traits should exhibit declines with inbreeding. We tested this by examining the effect of inbreeding on advertisement calling in male crickets Teleogryllus commodus. We investigated the effect of one generation of full-sibling mating on calling effort and fine-scale call structure. Inbreeding reduced calling effort but had no effect on call structure. We then compared the attractiveness of inbred and outbred calls in the field by monitoring how many wild females were attracted to each call type. From the field data, we conducted a selection analysis to identify the major axes of linear and nonlinear multivariate sexual selection on call structure. A comparison of multivariate attractiveness of inbred and outbred calls along each major axis of selection revealed no difference in attractiveness. Our results suggest that inbred male calls have a fine-scale structure that is no less attractive to females than that of outbred calls. However, because inbred males call less often, and female T. commodus prefer males with a higher calling effort, inbred males will suffer reductions in mating success. Females who base mate choice on call rate are therefore using a signal correlated with male heterozygosity and/or condition.

ABSTRACT

Although conspicuous courtship displays are an effective way of attracting the attention of receptive females, they could provide valuable information to rival males on the location of these females. In fiddler crabs, males that see a receptive female wave their single, greatly enlarged claw in a highly conspicuous courtship display. We test whether other males use this courtship display to alert them to the presence of receptive females that they cannot directly see. We show that male fiddler crabs (Uca mjoebergi) eavesdrop on the courtship displays of nearby males to detect mate-searching females. This allows males to begin waving before a female becomes visible. Furthermore, males appear to adjust their waving according to the information available: eavesdropping males wave 12 times faster than non-courting males but only 1.7 times slower than males in full visual contact with the female.

ABSTRACT

In fiddler crabs both males and females defend territories that are essential for survival. Given pronounced sexual dimorphism in weaponry, how do weaponless females defend their territory from well-armed males? Using observational data and two simple experiments, we test whether male Uca annulipes protect their female neighbours from conspecific intruders. We show that males defend their female neighbours against male but not female intruders. We also show that females sometimes mate with their immediate neighbours. Male defence of female neighbours appears to represent both pre-copulatory mate-guarding and a territorial coalition. Males who ensure that their neighbour remains female could benefit through increased opportunity for future reproductive success and lower boundary maintenance costs.
