ABSTRACT

Stefins or Type 1 cystatins belong to a large, evolutionarily conserved protein superfamily, the members of which inhibit the papain-like cysteine proteinases. We report here on the molecular cloning and chromosomal localization of three newly identified members of the murine stefin gene family. These genes, designated herein as mouse stefins 1, 2, and 3, were isolated on the basis of their relatively increased expression in moth-eaten viable compared to normal congenic mouse bone marrow cells. The open reading frames of the stefin cDNAs encode proteins of approximately 11.5 kDa that show between 50 and 92% identity to sequences of stefins isolated from various other species. Data from Southern analysis suggest that the murine stefin gene family encompasses at least 6 and possibly 10-20 members, all of which appear to be clustered in the genome. Analysis of interspecific backcross mice indicates that the genes encoding the three mouse stefins all map to mouse chromosome 16, a localization that is consistent with the recent assignment of the human stefin A gene to a region of conserved homology between human chromosome 3q and the proximal region of mouse chromosome 16.

ABSTRACT

Authors ten years experience and results in the surgical treatment of the gastroduodenal ulcer on Surgical clinic "Dr. M.Stojanovic" in Zagreb is esposed. During this period 1226 patients with the gastroduodenal ulcer operated, 804 from them with chronic, and 422 with acute complications as are perforation and bleeding. On the first period of time patients with the duodenal ulcer were operated by combined operative methods selective gastric vagotomy and antrectomy, and after 1975 by PSV with or without drainage procedure depent of the passage of the duodenum. The most of the patients with the gastric ulcer were operated by the Billroth I method of resection. PSV with suture of the perforated or bleeding ulcer of the duodenum is recommanded. 200 patients with chronic or acute complicated ulcer were operated by PSV with no death complication. All patients are normally tested before operation and 3 months, 12 months, and every year after operation. The results achieved by this method of the surgical treatment of the gastroduodenal ulcer are satisfied and harmonize with the modern therapy of ulcer disease.

ABSTRACT

Discussed in this study are the authors' experiences with electrostimulation of the heart. The study is based on 276 pacemaker operations performed in the past 7 years. The authors remain partial to the transvenously introduced endocardial pacemakers monitored by X-raj. When radiation symptoms manifested themselves in 2 team members, a revision was made in the procedure. As a result, the means by which one may be exposed to uncontrolled and, prolenged stron radiotion were cited. Such radiation can result in pathologic changes in the blood, damage to the skin, nails, germinative epithelium and bone marrow. To prevent such an outcome, certain precautionary measures are taken which protect both the patient and surgical team. Also mentioned is that the surgical personnel should have the same benefits as radiologists.

ABSTRACT

Secondary echinococcosis occurs as a complication of a primary cyst. The importance of operative technique during the removal of the primary cyst is emphasized, because the intraoperative disemination occurs most frequently after a surgical performance. Secondary echinococcosis generates by asexual regressive metamorphosis of larval element intro larval forms. Two cases of secondary abdominal echinococcoosis will be described ensuing after removal of the primary liver cyst. One patient, who has been operated because of the pulmonary echinococcosis cyst before, was cured in our hospital having the secondary echinonoccosis of the lungs and pleural cavity.
