ABSTRACT
This study aimed to identify the risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its associations around suicidal thoughts or attempts and mental health in military police officers injured by firearms, in the Metropolitan Region of Belem (RMB), from 2017 to 2019. The research had the participation of 30 respondents who answered the Demographic Inventory and the PTSD checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). For data analysis, we used the statistical technique Exploratory Data Analysis and the multivariate technique Correspondence Analysis. The results revealed the existence of risk of developing partial or total disorder in a significant portion of the interviewed population, with men as most of the symptomatic individuals, with mean age of 38 years, developing operational activities and victimized on public roads when they were off duty. The injuries left most of them with sequelae, especially chronic pain, limited locomotion and/or mobility, and partial loss of a limb. In addition, symptomatic officers showed suicidal behavior, such as reporting they had thought about or tried to take their own lives. Thus, we conclude that military policemen are constantly exposed to traumas inherent to their profession. When their lives are threatened, as in the case of firearm wounds, they are susceptible to physical sequelae resulting from the injury, in addition to late mental sequelae, such as the appearance of PTSD symptoms and suicidal ideation.(AU)

BACKGROUND: In January 2016, health authorities from Zambézia province, Mozambique reported the detection of some patients presenting with fever, arthralgia, and a positive result for chikungunya in an IgM-based Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT). We initiated a study to investigate a potential chikungunya outbreak in the city of Quelimane. METHODS/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From February to June 2016, we conducted a cross-sectional study enrolling febrile patients attending five outpatient health units in Quelimane. Serum from each patient was tested for CHIKV and DENV, using IgM and IgG ELISA and qRT-PCR. Patients were also tested for malaria by RDT. Entomological surveys were performed around patients' households, and we calculated the proportion of positive ovitraps and the egg density per trap. A total of 163 patients were recruited, of which 99 (60.7%) were female. The median age was 28 years. IgM and IgG anti-CHIKV antibodies were identified in 17 (10.4%) and 103 (63.2%) patients, respectively. Plaque reduction neutralization assay confirmed the presence of anti-CHIKV antibodies in a subset of 11 tested patients with positive IgG results. IgM anti-DENV antibodies were found in 1 (0.9%) of 104 tested patients. Malaria was diagnosed in 35 (21.5%) patients, 2 of whom were also IgM-positive for CHIKV. Older age and lower education level were independently associated with the prevalence of IgG anti-CHIKV antibodies. Immature forms of Aedes aegypti were collected in 16 (20.3%) of 79 surveyed households. We also found that 25.0% (16/64) of the traps were positive, with an average of 90.8 eggs per pallet. CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation demonstrated that no CHIKV outbreak was ongoing in Quelimane; rather, endemic transmission of the virus has been ongoing. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are abundant, but dengue cases occurred only sporadically. Further population-based cohort studies are needed to improve our understanding of aspects related to the dynamics of arboviral transmission in Mozambique, as well as in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Although Kokernot et al. found neutralizing antibodies against ZIKV in Mozambique in 1957 [20], the country has repeatedly been excluded from the list of countries with a past history of ZIKV. The current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention map, the recent World Health Organization Risk Assessment map on ZIKV in the Africa region, and most of the recent literature mapping countries with a current and past history of ZIKV have consistently excluded Mozambique [10, 21, 22] from the list of countries with past serological evidence of ZIKV. This might result in errors in the calculation and interpretation of the risk of Zika in Mozambique as well as in the region. In this regard, in this manuscript we revisit findings of the study conducted by Kokernot et al. in an attempt to discuss the current risk of Zika in the country. The survey, conducted in 1957, was published in Portuguese in 1960 [20]. This study was part of a larger study on arboviruses, in which blood samples were screened for antibodies against 13 arboviruses, including ZIKV, chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, Sindbis, Middleburg, and Wesselsbron. Samples were collected in 29 localities situated widely apart from each other throughout the country between July and August 1957. In each locality, they selected an average of 30 local residents who had been born in the area with no history of travel outside in their lifetime. The samples were analyzed in South Africa, using confirmatory neutralization testing (NT). NT was performed using an in vivo system. For this purpose, previously titrated virus strains for each arbovirus being tested were incubated with each participant's serum and inoculated into Swiss mice to assess the neutralization profile of each serum against each virus strain. For ZIKV, the prototype ZIKV strain was used [18], and both adult and newborn mice were used for inoculation. An amount of 0.03 mL of the preparation virus and serum was inoculated intracerebrally, as previously described [18], and each mouse was observed daily between 10 17 days to assess the viral effect. The authors found neutralizing antibodies to all of the viruses and concluded that the whole length of Mozambique was a "tropical corridor" of arbovirus activity. The viruses with highest prevalence rates of neutralizing antibodies were chikungunya (21.0%), Wesselsbron (15.9%), Bunyamwera (24.1%), Pongola (23.2%) and Bwamba fever (24.7%)...

The authors present a case of a neuroendocrine carcinoma in an asymptomatic 75-year-old woman, detected in routine breast screening. The lesion was visible at mammography as a well circumscribed, medium density nodule, with no associated microcalcifications, and at ultrasonography as a hypoechoic nodule, with irregular shape and ill-defined margins. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed findings consistent with malignancy.

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: The Pediatric Balance Scale (PBS) was developed from a modified version of the Berg Balance Scale aiming to obtain a balance scale more appropriate for the child population. OBJECTIVES: To adapt the PBS into Brazilian-Portuguese and to evaluate the intra and inter-rater reliability of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of PBS. METHODS: To perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the American version of PBS four translators were involved, who have performed two translations and their respective back-translations. Then, a review by a multidisciplinary committee and a subsequent an assessment of the equivalence of meaning between the back-translations and the original English scale were performed by 3 and 30 healthcare professionals respectively. The intra-rater reliability of the final version of the Brazilian-Portuguese PBS was evaluated using a test-retest design with one-week interval. The Brazilian-Portuguese version of the PBS was tested twice on the same day by two different raters to test the inter-rater reliability. The inter-rater reliability, which was measured from a video of the volunteers performance, was evaluated by comparing the score given by five raters independently. Reliability was evaluated by Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Fifteen volunteers (11±2.7 years) diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy (CP) classified at level I and II on the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) were assessed. RESULTS: The reliability of the PBS total score for both intra-rater (ICC=0.85) and inter-rater (ICC=0.91) was excellent. The inter-rater reliability (measured from the video) for the total score was also classified as excellent (ICC=0.98). CONCLUSION: The results showed adequate reliability for the PBS for pediatric population with CP diagnostic classified at level I and II on the GMFCS.

This study investigated the influence of both room temperature storage and water storage on tooth displacement in complete dentures. Thirty maxillary dentures were manufactured and processed using 3 different curing cycles; long, short conventional and microwaved. Distances between fixed points on teeth were measured and the dentures stored at room temperature for 24 weeks. After storage, the distances were measured again and the dentures then stored in water at 37 degrees C for 24 weeks, when the distances were re-evaluated. Anteroposterior distances demonstrated contraction in all acrylic resins. Incisor-incisor (air = -8.5% and water = -7.0%) and molar-molar (room = -1.8% and water = -1.1%) distance changes were greater in the Onda-Cryl resin (p < 0.05), whereas the premolar-premolar (room = -2.2% and water = -1.7%) distance was higher in the QC-20 resin (p < 0.05).

This study aimed to determine the anthropometric profile and diet of 652 school children from the 1st to 4th grades of elementary education in six private schools in the city of Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. Children's weight and height were classified according to the Body Mass Index proposed by Must et al. (1991). Food consumption was evaluated by means of a questionnaire about daily food frequency. Statistical analysis was carried out using linear and logistic regression tests, with a significance level of 5 percent. High rates of overweight and obesity, 21.9 percent and 13.3 percent respectively, were observed, which did not show a significant relationship with total food consumption. The data obtained were: high consumption of foods rich in energy, such as sugar- and fat-rich foods, and insufficient consumption of low-energy foods that are sources of micronutrients, such as vegetables. It is necessary to enhance the promotion of good alimentary and health habits within schools to lower risk factors for developing diseases, as well as to develop and validate a questionnaire to reliably assess the diet of the infant population.

Purpose: To verify the occurrence of lisp in eight- to 11-year-old children from public schools in Itaqui/RS (Brazil), according to gender and age group, and to associate the lisp with possible risk factors, such as sucking habits (pacifier, finger and bottle) up to six years of age, malocclusion, oral breathing and tongue praxis. Methods: An observational, exploratory, contemporary, prospective, group study was conducted using a questionnaire applied to caregivers and a speech-language evaluation that included examination of oral structures, tongue praxis, signs suggestive of oral breathing, and speech sounds articulation. Non-parametric statistics (Chi-square) was used in order to verify the association between variables. Results: Two hundred children with ages ranging from eight to 11 years took part in the study (50 percent male and 50 percent female). The occurrence rate of lisp was 19 percent , higher for female subjects. It was observed that anterior lisp decreases with age, but the same did not occur for lateral lisp. Suggestive signs of oral breathing (p=0.037), prolonged use of bottle (p=0.027), tongue praxis alterations (p=0.002), and malocclusion (p=0.0001) were the risk factors that showed statistical association. Conclusion: The occurrence of lisp was high, and affected more female subjects. Most of the risk factors were significantly associated.

The aim of this work was to investigate differences in the energy content during reproductive cycle of two species of fish with different life strategies: Brycon hilarii (k-strategist) and Hypophthalmus edentatus (r-strategist). Fifty-four samples of B. hilarii and 82 of H. edentatus monthly collected from October, 2000 to March, 2004, in Manso reservoir and its influence area were selected. The caloric content was determined for each individual, in kcal g-1 of dry weight, through bomb calorimetry (Parr 1261). Comparisons among the obtained caloric values, the condition factor (K) and the Gonado Somatic Relation were reported. It was observed that, in general, the average values of the K and of the caloric content were higher among males than among females of both species. Significant differences were found in the comparisons accomplished between the energy content and the condition factor on individuals of both species. While B. hilarii presents the highest concentrations of energy in the muscles, during the maximum gonadal development, H. edentatus showed these values in the beginning of gonadal maturation. B. hilarii and H. edentatus, with different life strategies, build up and mobilize energy in different ways during reproductive cycle.
