ABSTRACT

Tick-borne viruses (TBV) have gained public health relevance in recent years due to the recognition of human-associated fatal cases and the increase in tick-borne disease and transmission. However, many tick species have not been studied for their potential to transmit pathogenic viruses, especially those found in Latin America. To gain better understanding of the tick virome, we conducted targeted amplification using broadly-reactive consensus-degenerate pan-viral targeting viruses from the genera Flavivirus, Bandavirus, Uukuvirus, and Orthonairovirus genus. Additionally, we conducted unbiased metagenomic analyses to investigate the presence of viral RNA sequences in Amblyomma cajennense, A. patinoi and Rhipicephalus microplus ticks collected from a horse slaughter plant in Medellín, Colombia. While no viral products were detected by PCR, results of the metagenomic analyses revealed the presence of viral genomes belonging to the genera Phlebovirus, Bandavirus, and Uukuvirus, including Lihan Tick Virus (LTV), which was previously reported in Rhipicephalus microplus from Colombia. Overall, the results emphasized the enormous utility of the next-generation sequencing in identifying virus genetic diversity presents in ticks and other species of vectors and reservoirs.

ABSTRACT

The contamination of soil and water by metals such as mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) has been increasing in recent years, because of anthropogenic activities such as mining and agriculture, respectively. In this work, the changes in the rhizosphere microbiome of Lolium perenne L. during the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with Hg and Cd were evaluated. For this, two soil types were sampled, one inoculated with mycorrhizae and one without. The soils were contaminated with Hg and Cd, and L. perenne seeds were sown and harvested after 30 days. To assess changes in the microbiome, DNA isolation tests were performed, for which samples were subjected to two-step PCR amplification with specific 16S rDNA V3-V4 primers (337F and 805R). With mycorrhizae, changes had been found in the absorption processes of metals and a new distribution. While with respect to microorganisms, families such as the Enterobacteriaceae have been shown to have biosorption and efflux effects on metals such as Hg and Cd. Mycorrhizae then improve the efficiency of removal and allow the plant to better distribute the absorbed concentrations. Overall, L. perenne is a species with a high potential for phytoremediation of Cd- and Hg-contaminated soils in the tropics. Inoculation with mycorrhizae modifies the phytoremediation mechanisms of the plant and the composition of microorganisms in the rhizosphere. Mycorrhizal inoculation and changes in the microbiome were associated with increased plant tolerance to Cd and Hg. Microorganism-assisted phytoremediation is an appropriate alternative for L. perenne.

ABSTRACT

Guanarito virus (GTOV) is a member of the family Arenaviridae and has been designated a category A bioterrorism agent by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It is endemic to Venezuela's western region, and it is the etiological agent of "Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever" (VHF). Similar to other arenaviral hemorrhagic fevers, VHF is characterized by fever, mild hemorrhagic signs, nonspecific symptoms, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. Patients with severe disease usually develop signs of internal bleeding. Due to the absence of reference laboratories that can handle GTOV in endemic areas, diagnosis is primarily clinical and epidemiological. No antiviral therapies are available; thus, treatment includes only supportive analgesia and fluids. GTOV is transmitted by contact with the excreta of its rodent reservoir, Zygodontomys brevicauda. The main reasons for the emergence of the disease may be the increase in the human population, migration, and changes in land use patterns in rural areas. Social and environmental changes could make VHF an important cause of underdiagnosed acute febrile illnesses in regions near the endemic areas. Although there is evidence that GTOV circulates among rodents in different Venezuelan states, VHF cases have only been reported in the states of Portuguesa and Barinas. However, due to the increased frequency of invasions by humans into wildlife habitats, it is probable that VHF could become a public health problem in the nearby regions of Colombia and Brazil. The current Venezuelan political crisis is causing an increase in the migration of people and livestock, representing a risk for the redistribution and re-emergence of infectious diseases.

ABSTRACT

Soil contamination with heavy metals is a major problem worldwide, due to the increasing impact mainly caused by anthropogenic activities. This research evaluated the phytoremediation capacity of, Lolium perenne for heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd2+) and mercury (Hg2+), and the effects of these metals on morphology, biomass production, and the changes on gene expression. Seeds of L. perenne were exposed to six concentrations of Cd2+ and Hg2+ in the range of 0 to 25 mg L-1, and two mixtures of Cd2+-Hg2. The Non-Observed Effect Level (NOEL) was established with dose response curves and the expression of specific genes was evaluated applying a commercially available quantitative reverse transcription (RT-qPCR) assay. There was no significant effect when exposing the seeds to Hg2+, for Cd2+ the maximum concentration was established in 0.1 mg L-1, and for the two concentrations of mixtures, there was a negative effect. An increase of expression of genes that regulate antioxidant activity and stress was found when the plant was exposed to heavy metals. Given the high tolerance to metals analyzed that was reflected both, the development of the plant and in its molecular response, these results highlight that L. perenne is a plant with phytoremediator potential.

ABSTRACT

The presence and final destination of pharmaceutical compounds in waters constitute one of the emerging events in current environmental chemistry. Two widely consumed compounds have been evaluated in this study, amoxicillin (AMOX) and diclofenac (DFC), at a concentration of 200 mg L-1. The presence of both in wastewater has been verified, generating problems in ecosystems and human health. Pyrolysis of hair waste from a tannery process was performed in a fixed-bed reactor. Char was obtained at different operating temperatures (300, 350, 400, and 450 °C), which underwent a characterization of heavy metals and elemental composition. An activation process was applied to the char obtained at 450 °C by means of physicochemical processes and with two chemical agents (KOH and K2CO3). For the removal of drugs, two separate tests were performed, one for 28 days and the other one for 4 h, to assess the efficiency and the percentage of removal. It was found that the char obtained at 450 °C is the one that removes most of both compounds: more than 90% of AMOX and more than 80% of DFC.

Introduction: The sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common of bacterial etiology in the world. Although it can be asymptomatic in most cases, it can produce several reproductive health problems in women such as cervicitis, endometritis, and salpingitis. Despite its importance, the epidemiological data on this infection is insufficient in Medellín. Objective: To determine the prevalence of C. trachomatis in women from Medellín, identify possible risk factors, and evaluate its relationship with the human papillomavirus infection (HPV). Materials and methods: We conducted a multicenter cross-sectional study to detect C. trachomatis infection in 1,282 women using PCR and the LightMix 480 HT CT/NG™ commercial kit (Roche, Basel, Switzerland). Results: The total prevalence of C. trachomatis infection was 4.1% (95% CI: 2.9-5.3). We found an association between the presence of the infection and age, cigarette consumption, and the use of hormonalcontraceptives. Conclusion: The prevalence of the infection is similar to that reported in other parts of the world with young women being the most affected population. No relation was found with the presence of HPV.

Aunque puede ser asintomática en la mayoría de los casos, C. trachomatis puede generar diversos problemas de salud reproductiva en mujeres, como cervicitis, endometritis y salpingitis. A pesar de su importancia, en Medellín no se cuenta con suficientes datos epidemiológicos sobre esta infección. Objetivo. Determinar la prevalencia de C. trachomatis en mujeres de Medellín, determinar los posibles factores de riesgo y evaluar la relación con la infección por el virus de papiloma humano (HPV). Materiales y métodos. Se hizo un estudio transversal multicéntrico para detectar la infección por C. trachomatis en 1.282 mujeres mediante reacción en cadena de la polimerasa (PCR) convencional y el estuche comercial LightMix 480 HT CT/NG™ (Roche, Basilea, Suiza). Resultados. La prevalencia total de la infección por C. trachomatis fue de 4,1 % (IC95% 2,9-5,3). Se encontró una relación significativa de la infección con la edad, el consumo de cigarrillo y el uso de anticonceptivos hormonales. Conclusión. La prevalencia de la infección es similar a la reportada en otros lugares del país y del mundo, siendo las mujeres más jóvenes las más afectadas. En cuanto a la presentación del HPV, no se encontró ningún tipo de relación con C. trachomatis.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: In Colombia, there is insufficient epidemiological surveillance of zoonotic hemorrhagic viruses. METHODS: We performed a sero-epidemiological study in indigenous populations of Wayuü, Kankuamos, and Tuchin communities using Maciel hantavirus and Junin arenavirus antigens for IgG detection by ELISA. RESULTS IgG antibodies to hantavirus and arenavirus were found in 5/506 (1%) and 2/506 (0.4%) serum samples, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Arenavirus and hantavirus circulate in indigenous populations from the Colombian Caribbean region, and the results indicate that the indigenous populations are exposed to these zoonotic agents, with unknown consequences on their health, despite low seroprevalence.

RESUMEN Objetivo: determinar la frecuencia de la infección y enfermedad por Rickettsia spp. del grupo de las fiebres manchadas en pacientes febriles del Urabá antioqueño, que asistieron a centros hospitalarios de la región. Métodos: se incluyeron en el estudio pacientes febriles provenientes de 9 instituciones de salud de la región del Urabá, los cuales fueron encuestados para determinar sus variables clínicas y demográficas. De estos pacientes se obtuvieron muestras de suero durante las fases aguda y convaleciente de la enfermedad. Para cada muestra se determinó la seropositividad (título ≥ 64) y su título de anticuerpos seriados dobles mediante inmunofluorescencia indirecta para IgG contra el antígeno de Rickettsia rickettsii. Resultados: se analizaron 89 pacientes febriles con 89 muestras de fase aguda y 60 en fase convaleciente. Los síntomas más comunes de los pacientes fueron cefalea, ictericia, mialgias, náuseas, dolor abdominal, trombocitopenia y vómito. El 55,1 % de los pacientes provenía de áreas rurales. Se obtuvo seropositividad del 40,4 % con títulos entre 64-512, infección previa en un 33,7 % y rickettsiosis en 6 pacientes (6,7 %). Los pacientes con seroconversión o serorefuerzo provenían de los municipios de Apartadó (n = 2), Chigorodó (n = 1), Necoclí (n = 2) y Turbo (n = 1); el hallazgo clínico más destacado fue la trombocitopenia. Conclusiones: se demostró que la infección y la enfermedad rickettsial continúan siendo activas en la zona del Urabá. Este hallazgo permite alertar a las autoridades de salud de la región para que se brinde tratamiento con antibióticos a los casos sospechosos de manera temprana y de esta forma evitar las muertes o secuelas derivadas de este tipo de infecciones.


SUMMARY Objective: Determine the frequency of infection and disease by Rickettsia spp. of the spotted fever group in febrile patients from Urabá Antioquia attended by hospital centers of the region. Methods: Patients from nine health institutions of the Urabá region were included in the study. These patients received a survey with questions about their clinical and socio-demographic variables. Eighty-nine acutephase serum samples, and 60 convalescent serum samples, were obtained from these patients, and each sample was tested (IgG) by Indirect Immunofluoerscence Assay (IIFA) using a dilution of 1:64 against R. rickettsii. Furtherly, positive sera were tittered by two-fold serial dilutions using the same antigen. Results: Patients showed symptoms such as fever, headache, jaundice, myalgias, nausea, abdominal pain, petechiae, thrombocytopenia and vomiting. Most of these patients came from rural areas (55,1 %). Seropositivity was obtained in 40,4 % patients with titers between 64-512, a 33,7 % with previous infection and the disease was found in 6 patients (6,7 %). Patients with seroconversion, or a fourlfold rise antibody titer between acute and convalescent samples, came from the municipalities of Apartadó (n = 2), Chigorodó (n = 1), Necoclí (n = 2) and Turbo (n = 1), and the most relevant clinical finding was thrombocytopenia in four of the patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that infection and rickettsial disease continues being active in the Urabá region. This situation represents a warning for the health authorities of the region and suggests them to provide appropriate treatment to avoid deaths or sequelae derived from this type of infections.

Abstract Background: Ehrlichia and Rickettsia are two major rickettsial genera transmitted by ticks that affect a number of wild and domestic animal species and human populations around the world. Objective: To design and validate a duplex PCR for Ehrlichia and Rickettsia in ticks. Methods: Assay validation included testing for sensitivity, specificity, reproducibility, and robustness of the PCR. The groEL and 23sr RNA genes were used for Ehrlichia and Rickettsia, respectively. Results: The limit of detection was one hundred gene copies per 50 μL of reaction for Ehrlichia spp, and one gene copy of Rickettsia per 50 μL of reaction. In general, the primers of the test only amplified in silico those bacterial agents for which they were originally designed, with the exception of the primers for Rickettsia that also amplified Methylocystis sp. The test was reproducible (intermediate precision) 96.7% of the times for both agents. The test was robust enough to tolerate concentration changes of all reagents with the exception of Taq DNA polymerase. Conclusions: The validation results indicated that this PCR is useful for detection in both bacterial genera and it is a good candidate for diagnostic validation.


Resumen Antecedentes: Ehrlichia spp. y Rickettsia spp. son dos de los principales géneros rickettsiales transmitidos por garrapatas que afectan a animales silvestres, domésticos y humanos alrededor del mundo. Objetivo: Diseñar y validar una prueba PCR dúplex para Ehrlichia y Rickettsia en garrapatas. Métodos: La validación de la prueba incluyó ensayos de sensibilidad, especificidad, reproducibilidad y robustez. En la PCR se usó groEL y ARNr 23S como genes blanco para Ehrlichia y Rickettsia, respectivamente. Resultados: El límite de detección fue de 100 copias del gen por 50 μL de reacción para Ehrlichia spp y una copia del gen de Rickettsia por 50 μL de reacción. En general, los cebadores de la prueba solo amplificaron in silico los agentes bacterianos para los cuales fueron originalmente diseñados, con la excepción de los cebadores de Rickettsia que también amplificaron Methylocystis sp. La prueba fue reproducible (precisión intermedia) en un 96.7% de las veces para ambos agentes. La prueba fue suficientemente robusta como para tolerar cambios de concentración de los diferentes reactivos, con excepción de la Taq DNA polimerasa. Conclusión: Los resultados de validación indican que la PCR es útil para detectar ambos géneros bacterianos y podria usarse para validación diagnostica.

Objetivo: O objetivo principal foi elaborar e validar uma PCR duplex para Ehrlichia e Rickettsia em carrapatos. Métodos: A validação incluiu testes de sensibilidade, especificidade, reprodução e robustez. Para o PCR, utilizamos os genes groEl e 23Sr-RNA para Ehrlichia e Rickettsia, respectivamente. Resultados: O limite de detecção foi de 100 cópias de genes por 50 ml de reação para Erliquia spp e uma cópia de gene de Rickettsia por 50 ml de reação. Em geral, os iniciadores dos testes amplificaram em modelos computacionais os agentes bacterianos para os quais eles foram projetados, exceto os primers de Rickettsia que também amplificou Methylocystis sp. Os testes foram reproduzíveis (precisão intermediária) 96,7% para ambos os agentes e foram também robustos para tolerar mudanças de concentração em todos os reagentes, exceto o reagente Taq DNA polymerase. Conclusões: Os resultados da validação indicaram que o PCR é útil para detecção em ambos os gêneros bacterianos, portanto, um bom exame para validação diagnóstica.

Hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HPS) has gained importance in Latin America as an emerging disease, with reports of about 4000 HPS cases; however, this is probably an underestimate because of limited surveillance programs and diagnostic tools to confirm HPS. In order to address this issue and develop better serosurveillance capability, we evaluated three recombinant peptides from the Necoclí virus (NECV) nucleocapsid in antibody-capture ELISA. We cloned and expressed antigens representing the whole NECV nucleocapsid protein (NECV-rN), the immunodominant domain (NECV-rN100), and a serospecific domain (NECV-rN428), and then we compared these antigens in ELISA to detect IgG antibodies to NECV in human sera. We evaluated human sera collected during two epidemiological studies from the area where NECV was discovered. The first group included 609 sera from healthy individuals, and the second one included 89 samples from patients with undifferentiated febrile illness. In these two groups, hantavirus infection had previously been determined by the presence of IgG to Maciel virus (MCLV), a hantavirus closely related to NECV. The number of IgG-positive sera was higher using the Necoclí ELISA with the rN100 protein, which detected antibodies in a higher percentage of healthy individuals, 129/609 (21.2%), as well as in febrile patients, 11/89 (12.3%). In contrast, using MCLV ELISA, 8 of 609 (1.3%) and 4 of 89 (4.5%) samples from healthy and febrile patients, respectively, were seropositive. The agreement between the NECV and MCLV ELISA assays was ≥ 82.3%; however, the kappa indices were weak but statistically significant for rN (0.251 CI; 0.138-0.365) and rN100rN (0.153 CI; 0.084-0.223). The weak kappa indices were attributed to decreased MCLV ELISA assay sensitivity. These results suggest that NECV rN and rN100 have increased specificity and could be further validated for improved diagnosis of hantavirus infections.

ABSTRACT

RESUMEN Los virus transmitidos por garrapatas (VTG) pertenecen a las familias Flaviviridae, Bunyaviridae, Reoviridae, Asfarviridae y Orthomyxoviridae y son agentes causales de diferentes enfermedades en humanos y animales. Debido a la creciente importancia epidemiológica que están teniendo los VTG, esta revisión pretende englobar el conocimiento actual de estos agentes y las enfermedades que producen, así como exponer las estrategias abordadas en prevención y tratamiento que se han implementado hasta el momento en diferentes países. Es evidente que para la región Neotropical hacen falta estudios sobre los VTG presentes en la región, ya que la gran mayoría de los artículos, tanto revisiones de tema como trabajos originales, presentan datos de las regiones Neártica y Paleártica. Considerando el panorama actual de los estudios de VTG en la región Neotropical y las particularidades de la misma, es muy probable que existan otros VTG aún no identificados que podrían tener algún impacto en salud pública.


SUMMARY Tick-borne viruses (TBVs) belong to the Flaviviridae, Bunyaviridae, Reoviridae, Asfarviridae and Orthomyxoviridae families and cause different diseases in humans and animals. Due to the epidemiologic relevance of TBVs, this review highlights the actual knowledge of these agents and the diseases they cause, besides of the prevention and treatment strategies implemented so far. It is evident that studies that address the TBVs present in the Neotropical region are missing, since most of the studies, both reviews and original articles, present data from the Nearctic and Palearctic regions. Considering the current picture of the TBVs studies in the Neotropical area and its peculiarities, is probable that other not yet identified TBVs exist in this zone and have an impact in public health.

ABSTRACT

This article will outline surveillance approaches for viral hemorrhagic fevers. Specific methods for surveillance of clinical samples will be emphasized. Separate articles will describe methods for surveillance of rodent-borne viruses (roboviruses) and arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses). Since the appearance of hantaviruses and arenaviruses in the Americas, more than 30 different species in each group have been established, and therefore they have become the most frequently emerging viruses. Flaviviruses such as yellow fever and dengue viruses, although easier to recognize, are also more widely spread and therefore considered a very important public health issue, particularly for under-developed countries. On the other hand, marburgviruses and ebolaviruses, previously thought to be restricted to the African continent, have recently been shown to be more global. For many of these agents virus isolation has been a challenging task: trapping the specific vectors (mosquitoes and ticks), and reservoirs (rodents and bats), or obtaining the samples from suspected clinical human cases demands special protective gear, uncommon devices (respirators), special facilities (BSL-3 and 4), and particular skills to recognize the slow and inapparent cytopathic effects in cell culture. Alternatively, serological and molecular approaches have been very helpful in discovering and describing newly emerging viruses in many areas where the previous resources are unavailable. Unfortunately, in many cases, detailed studies have been performed only after outbreaks occur, and then active surveillance is needed to prevent viral dissemination in human populations.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to explore the association between some SNPs of the TNF, LTA, IL1B and IL10 genes with cytokine concentrations and clinical course in Colombian septic patients. We conducted a cross-sectional study to genotype 415 septic patients and 205 patients without sepsis for the SNPs -308(G/A) rs1800629 of TNF; +252 (G/A) rs909253 of LTA; -511(A/G) rs16944 and +3953(C/T) rs1143634 of IL1B; and -1082(A/G) rs1800896, -819(C/T) rs1800871 and -592(C/A) rs1800872 of IL10. The association of theses SNPs with the following parameters was evaluated: (1) the presence of sepsis; (2) severity and clinical outcomes; (3) APACHE II and SOFA scores; and (4) procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor, lymphotoxin alpha, interleukin 1 beta and interleukin 10 plasma concentrations. We found an association between the SNP LTA +252 with the development of sepsis [OR 1.29 (1.00-1.68)]; the SNP IL10 -1082 with sepsis severity [OR 0.53 (0.29-0.97)]; the TNF -308 with mortality [OR 0.33 (0.12-0.95)]; and the IL10 -592 and IL10 -1082 with admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) [OR 3.36 (1.57-7.18)] and [OR 0.18 (0.04-0.86)], respectively. None of the SNPs were associated with cytokine levels, procalcitonin and C-reactive protein serum concentrations, nor with APACHE II and SOFA scores. Our results suggest that these genetic variants play an important role in the development of sepsis and its clinical course.

ABSTRACT

The results of a previous study suggested that Cherrie's cane rat (Zygodontomys cherriei) is the principal host of Necoclí virus (family Bunyaviridae, genus Hantavirus) in Colombia. Bayesian analyses of complete nucleocapsid protein gene sequences and complete glycoprotein precursor gene sequences in this study confirmed that Necoclí virus is phylogenetically closely related to Maporal virus, which is principally associated with the delicate pygmy rice rat (Oligoryzomys delicatus) in western Venezuela. In pairwise comparisons, nonidentities between the complete amino acid sequence of the nucleocapsid protein of Necoclí virus and the complete amino acid sequences of the nucleocapsid proteins of other hantaviruses were ≥8.7%. Likewise, nonidentities between the complete amino acid sequence of the glycoprotein precursor of Necoclí virus and the complete amino acid sequences of the glycoprotein precursors of other hantaviruses were ≥11.7%. Collectively, the unique association of Necoclí virus with Z. cherriei in Colombia, results of the Bayesian analyses of complete nucleocapsid protein gene sequences and complete glycoprotein precursor gene sequences, and results of the pairwise comparisons of amino acid sequences strongly support the notion that Necoclí virus represents a novel species in the genus Hantavirus. Further work is needed to determine whether Calabazo virus (a hantavirus associated with Z. brevicauda cherriei in Panama) and Necoclí virus are conspecific.

ABSTRACT

Hantaan virus was discovered in Korea during the 1970s while other similar viruses were later reported in Asia and Europe. There was no information about hantavirus human infection in the Americas until 1993 when an outbreak was described in the United States. This event promoted new studies to find hantaviruses in the Americas. At first, many studies were conducted in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, while other Latin American countries began to report the presence of these agents towards the end of the 20th century. More than 30 hantaviruses have been reported in the Western Hemisphere with more frequent cases registered in the southern cone (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Brazil). However there was an important outbreak in 2000 in Panama and some rare events have been described in Peru, Venezuela and French Guiana. Since hantaviruses have only recently emerged as a potential threat in the tropical zones of the Americas, this review compiles recent hantavirus reports in Central America, the Caribbean islands and the northern region of South America. These studies have generated the discovery of new hantaviruses and could help to anticipate the presentation of possible future outbreaks in the region.

Se considera que la sepsis es la principal causa de mortalidad en las unidades de cuidado intensivo, por lo cual ha sido objeto de numerosas investigaciones que aún no se han traducido en avances terapéuticos significativos. El balance entre los fenómenos proinflamatorios y antiinflamatorios característicos de este síndrome es el que puede determinar el desenlace del paciente; además, la complejidad del desarrollo de estrategias terapéuticas en sepsis está relacionada con la naturaleza heterogénea de la respuesta inmune; se destaca la importancia de los factores genéticos que regulan el componente inmune durante la respuesta inflamatoria. Con base en tales conocimientos, esta revisión se centra en genes de citocinas importantes en el curso clínico de la sepsis, en la información sobre sus variantes genéticas en la población con sepsis y en su impacto sobre la función del gen. Estos factores son de importancia crítica y un mejor conocimiento acerca de ellos podría ayudar a evaluar el riesgo de desarrollar sepsis y a definir su asociación con la evolución clínica de este síndrome.


Sepsis is the main cause of mortality in intensive care units. Therefore, many efforts to develop therapeutic approaches have been made without significant progress. The balance between the pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses during the course of sepsis may determine the clinical outcome of patients; besides, the complexity of developing successful treatments in sepsis may be related to the heterogeneous nature of immune responses; the importance of genetic factors that regulate the immune component during the inflammatory response is emphasized. Based on such facts, this review focuses on genes of cytokines involved in the clinical course of sepsis; on information about their allelic variants found in the population with sepsis, and on their impact on gene expression. These factors are of critical importance, and a better knowledge about them could help to evaluate the risk of developing sepsis, and to define their association with the clinical evolution of this syndrome.
