ABSTRACT

This paper compares the Morris, Spearman and Sobol' methods of sensitivity analysis in radiological risk assessment. The determination of the most influential parameters on model with regards to the propagation of their uncertainties to output variables, is of greatest interest. This study aims to determine the relative importance of parameters uncertainties on the dose calculation uncertainty in the framework of a scenario of routine discharges discussed in the context of an IAEA working group. The scenario considers atmospheric and liquid discharges of three different types of radionuclides (14C, tritium as HTO and 110mAg) from a nuclear power plant located by the side of a river. It is concluded that the most reliable and practical method according to the ability of ranking influential parameters and the easiness of its application is the Spearman method. As key result, the three first influential variables for annual total dose for all pathways and all radionuclides were the water dissolved inorganic carbon concentration, the volatilisation rate constant and the soil layer solid liquid distribution in 14C.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To explore the relationship of urinary concentrations of different congeners of benzophenones and parabens with the utilization of cosmetics and personal care products (PCPs) and their impact on the risk of endometriosis, and to evaluate the influence of oxidative stress on associations found. METHODS: This case-control study comprised a subsample of 124 women (35 cases; 89 controls). Endometriosis was confirmed (cases) or ruled out (controls) by laparoscopy, with visual inspection of the pelvis and biopsy of suspected lesions (histological diagnosis). Urinary concentrations of benzophenone-1 (BP-1), benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 4-hydroxibenzophenone (4-OH-BP), methyl- (MeP), ethyl- (EtP), propyl- (PrP), and butyl-paraben (BuP), and biomarkers of oxidative stress [lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and total antioxidant power (TAP)] were quantified. Information was gathered on the frequency of use of cosmetics and PCPs. Associations between the frequency of cosmetics/PCP use, urinary concentrations of benzophenones and parabens, oxidative stress, and endometriosis risk were explored in logistic and linear multivariable regression analyses. RESULTS: The frequency of utilization of certain cosmetics and PCPs was significantly associated with urinary concentrations of benzophenones and parabens. After adjustment for potential confounders, the risk of endometriosis was increased in women in the second versus first terciles of MeP (OR = 5.63; p-value<0.001), BP-1 (OR = 5.12; p-value = 0.011), BP-3 (OR = 4.98; p-value = 0.008), and Æ©BPs (OR = 3.34; p-value = 0.032). A close-to-significant relationship was observed between TBARS concentrations and increased endometriosis risk (OR = 1.60, p-value = 0.070) and an inverse association between TAP concentrations and this risk (OR = 0.15; p-value = 0.048). Oxidative stress results did not modify associations observed between benzophenone/paraben exposure and endometriosis risk. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the frequency of cosmetics and PCP utilization is a strong predictor of exposure to certain benzophenone and paraben congeners. These compounds may increase the risk of endometriosis in an oxidative stress-independent manner. Further studies are warranted to corroborate these findings.

ABSTRACT

In this work was to evaluate the conidiospores production of Trichoderma harzianum using barley straw as substrate. Four growth conditions were used; washed and unwashed barley straw and washed and unwashed barley straw supplemented with mineral salts. The highest spore production was observed when washed barley straw supplemented with mineral salts with 1.56 × 1010 conidiospores/gram of dry matter (gdm) at 216 h of cultivation was used. The effect of substrate moisture on spore production was studied, three initial moisture levels of the substrate were tested and it was observed that a humidity of 80 % of the substrate improves the production of conidiospores reaching a concentration of 2.35 × 1010 conidiospores/gdm at 136 h. Finally, conidiospores viability was evaluated for 12 months by keeping them on the conidia and substrate, and viability of 71 % of the conidiospores was observed, so this maintenance method is an excellent means of conserving the conidiospores viability.

ABSTRACT

With intentions of integrating a portion of their respective research efforts into a trans-national programme that will enhance radioecology, eight European organisations recently formed the European Radioecology ALLIANCE (www.er-alliance.org). The ALLIANCE is an Association open to other organisations throughout the world with similar interests in promoting radioecology. The ALLIANCE members recognised that their shared radioecological research could be enhanced by efficiently pooling resources among its partner organizations and prioritising group efforts along common themes of mutual interest. A major step in this prioritisation process was to develop a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA). An EC-funded Network of Excellence in Radioecology, called STAR (Strategy for Allied Radioecology), was formed, in part, to develop the SRA. This document is the first published draft of the SRA. The SRA outlines a suggested prioritisation of research topics in radioecology, with the goal of improving research efficiency and more rapidly advancing the science. It responds to the question: "What topics, if critically addressed over the next 20 years, would significantly advance radioecology?" The three Scientific Challenges presented within the SRA, with their 15 associated research lines, are a strategic vision of what radioecology can achieve in the future. Meeting these challenges will require a directed effort and collaboration with many organisations the world over. Addressing these challenges is important to the advancement of radioecology and in providing scientific knowledge to decision makers. Although the development of the draft SRA has largely been a European effort, the hope is that it will initiate an open dialogue within the international radioecology community and its stakeholders. This is an abbreviated document with the intention of introducing the SRA and inviting contributions from interested stakeholders. Critique and input for improving the SRA are welcomed via a link on the STAR website (www.star-radioecology.org).

ABSTRACT

The production of electricity in coal-fired power plants (CFPP) is considered a NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials) activity because the coals they burn can present relatively high contents of the naturally occurring radionuclides. In this study, the main radiological impact pathways into the surrounding environments of the four largest coal-fired power plants in Spain were analyzed. These pathways are, first, atmospheric evacuations and wind resuspension and, second, effluent evacuations to nearby rivers or directly to the sea. The atmospheric releases of radionuclides were evaluated by the analyses of soil profiles in the vicinities of the CFPPs. No significant enhancement of radionuclides in the surface soil was observed at the points of maximum deposition of combustion gases, located from 4.3 to 13 km away depending on the considered CFPP. However, an increase of (40)K, (226)Ra, and (232)Th in the surface soils was observed in the first kilometre from the chimney for two CFPPs. This suggested that these radionuclides were released in particulate form. There was also a net influence of the climate in which the CFPPs were located. This was observed in the two CFPPs that were in dry environments, while no increase was observed in the other two, located in more humid environments. The liquid effluents released usually presented an enhancement of dissolved chemical species regarding the initial intake water. Enrichments of the (234,238)U and (226)Ra contents in the water used in the plants' routine procedures were observed, and of (210)Po in the wastewater of just one of the plants. In any case, this enhancement was below the parametric value for the Total Indicative Dose for the hypothetical human consumption of the released waters. As a consequence of these releases of radionuclides, local products destined for human consumption produced in the vicinity of the facilities might incorporate natural radionuclides by these pathways, finding no significant enhancement of the natural radionuclide contents due to the CFPPs.

ABSTRACT

The present work studied the radioacitivity impact of a coal-fired power plant (CFPP), a NORM industry, on the water of the Regallo river which the plant uses for cooling. Downstream, this river passes through an important irrigated farming area, and it is a tributary of the Ebro, one of Spain's largest rivers. Although no alteration of the (210)Po or (232)Th content was detected, the (234,238)U and (226)Ra contents of the water were significantly greater immediately below CFPP's discharge point. The (226)Ra concentration decreased progressively downstream from the discharge point, but the uranium content increased significantly again at two sampling points 8 km downstream from the CFPP's effluent. This suggested the presence of another, unexpected uranium source term different from the CFPP. The input from this second uranium source term was even greater than that from the CFPP. Different hypotheses were tested (a reservoir used for irrigation, remobilization from sediments, and the effect of fertilizers used in the area), with it finally being demonstrated that the source was the fertilizers used in the adjacent farming areas.

ABSTRACT

In several Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) industries, relatively high temperatures are used as part of their industrial processes. In coal combustion, as occur in other high temperature processes, an increase of the activity concentration of every natural radioisotope is produced both, in residues and by-products. An additional increase can be observed in the activity concentration of radionuclides of elements with low boiling point. This work is centred in the increase of polonium, more precisely in its radioisotope Po-210, present in the natural chains, and with a half-life long enough to be considered for radiation protection purposes. This additional increase appears mainly in the residual particles that are suspended in the flue gases: the fly-ashes. Besides, scales, with a high concentration of this radioisotope, were observed. These scales are produced on surfaces with a temperature lower than the boiling point of the chemical element. Both, the accumulation in particles and the production of scales are attributed to condensation effects. When effective doses for the public and the workers are evaluated, taking into account these increases in activity concentrations, the use of theoretical models is necessary. In this work a theoretical description of those effects is presented. Moreover, a verification of the predictions of the model was performed by comparing them with measurements carried on in coal-fired power plants. The same description here presented is applicable in general to the behaviour of Po-210 in other NORM industries where high temperature processes involving raw materials are used, as can be ceramic, cement production, tiles production or steel processing.

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Estudio transversal que compara la técnica de tipificación del papilomavirus humano (VPH) con la citología, en el diagnóstico precoz de la neoplasia de cérvix en mujeres con el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH), así como la relación entre el nivel de inmunosupresión y la infección por el VPH. Material y métodos: Se seleccionó a 67 pacientes VIH-positivas que cumplían los criterios de inclusión. Se realizaron 3 pruebas: citología, tipificación del VPH y colposcopia-biopsia. Se valoraron los factores de riesgo para la patología cervical dependiente del VPH, subtipo de VPH, tipo de lesión citológica y lesión biopsiada, cifra de CD4/mm3 y carga viral. Resultados: El 35,8 por ciento de la muestra fue positiva para el VPH, el subtipo más frecuente fue el VPH 18 (9 casos). Los factores de riesgo más fuertemente asociados a la infección por el VPH fueron los antecedentes de drogadicción, prostitución y uso infrecuente del preservativo. Hubo 22 biopsias positivas. El test de tipificación resultó más sensible que la citología (63,6 frente a 45,5 por ciento) pero menos específico. La cifra media de CD4/mm3 en pacientes VPH-positivas fue de 255,75 frente a 529,58 en VPH-negativas (p = 0,000). Conclusiones: La prueba de tipificación, asociada a la citología, aumenta la sensibilidad en el diagnóstico precoz de la neoplasia de cérvix en mujeres infectadas por el VIH. Las bajas cifras de CD4 se asociaron significativamente con presencia de lesión cervical e infección por el VPH (AU)

BACKGROUND: Several neuromuscular blocking (NMB) agents are available for clinical use in anesthesia. The present study was performed in order to identify preferences and behaviors of anesthesiologists for using vecuronium, rocuronium or other NMB agents in their clinical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The cross-sectional survey was applied at the Updated Course of the Colegio Mexicano de Anestesiología performed last year. Of 989, 282 (28.5%) surveys were returned. RESULTS: Most anesthesiologists were working at both public and private hospitals, performed anesthetic procedures for hospitalized and ambulatory patients, and anesthetized children as well as adults. Respondents did not consider mechanomyography as the gold standard method for neuromuscular monitoring. The T25 was not recognized as a pharmacodynamic parameter that represents the clinical duration of the neuromuscular block. Most answered that vecuronium induces less histamine release than rocuronium, had never used any neuromuscular monitor, did not know the cost of vecuronium and rocuronium, and preferred rocuronium in multiple-sampling vials and vecuronium in either a vial for single or multiple sampling. Rocuronium was preferred for emergency surgery in patients with full stomach only. Almost all of anesthesiologists that conserve the unused drug did it without refrigeration and more than 30% conserve the unused drug in one syringe for further use. CONCLUSION: Vecuronium was preferred for most clinical situations, and the decision for this choice was not based on costs. Storage of unused drugs without refrigeration in a single syringe for purpose of future use in several patients represented a dangerous common practice.

ABSTRACT

beta-Catenin gene mutations and microsatellite instability (MI) have been reported in endometrioid ovarian carcinomas. In colon but not endometrial cancer, beta-catenin gene mutations are associated with a replication error phenotype and MI. In this study the authors investigate whether beta-catenin mutations and MI are two independent oncogenic pathways in endometrioid ovarian carcinomas. They also evaluate the usefulness of these molecular markers in determining the primary origin of simultaneous tumors in the ovary and endometrium. This study was performed on 26 patients diagnosed with primary endometrioid ovarian carcinoma, five of whom also had pathologically diagnosed primary synchronous endometrioid endometrial carcinoma. Immunohistochemical and molecular analyses indicated that there were 25 primary ovarian tumors with four primary synchronous endometrial cancers and one ovarian metastasis of a primary endometrial carcinoma. All studies were performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples. The beta-catenin expression pattern (nuclear vs. membranous) was analyzed immunohistochemically. Mutations in exon 3 of the beta-catenin gene were studied by polymerase chain reaction, single-strand conformational polymorphism, and direct sequencing. MI status was established by studying BAT-26 and BAT-25 mononucleotide repeats. In the group with 21 single ovarian tumors, 18 (85%) had beta-catenin nuclear expression, eight (38%) had beta-catenin gene mutations (always associated with beta-catenin nuclear expression), and four (19%) had MI. Only one case (5%) had both beta-catenin gene mutations and MI. The mutations affected one of the serine/threonine residues targeted for phosphorylation by glycogen synthase kinase-3beta or adjacent residues. At codon 32, a GAC-to-TAC (D32Y) change was found; at codon 33, two TCT-to-TGT (S33C) changes were found; at codon 37, three TCT-to-TTT (S37F) changes and one TCT-to-TGT (S37C) change were found; and, lastly, one ACC-to-GCC change at codon 41 (T41A) was detected. Four of the 25 endometrioid ovarian carcinomas (16%) had an associated synchronous endometrial carcinoma. There was a higher percentage of beta-catenin mutations (n = 3, 75%) in synchronous ovarian carcinomas than in single ones, although with a similar percentage of MI (n = 1, 25%). beta-catenin mutations were S37C in two cases and D32G in one. One of the four endometrial carcinomas showed an S33C beta-catenin mutation, and two carcinomas had MI. None of the four tumors had both beta-catenin gene mutation and MI. beta-catenin gene mutations were always associated with a nuclear beta-catenin expression pattern, whereas MI was associated with a membranous pattern. In one patient both the ovarian and the endometrial carcinomas had beta-catenin gene mutations, in another patient both tumors showed MI, whereas in the remaining two patients the ovarian carcinomas showed beta-catenin gene mutations and the endometrial carcinomas showed MI. To summarize, the results of this study suggest that beta-catenin mutations and MI could represent two independent pathways in endometrioid ovarian carcinomas because they occur simultaneously very infrequently (in 5% of these cases). beta-catenin mutations are always associated with a nuclear beta-catenin expression pattern, whereas cases with a replication error -plus phenotype showed no abnormal beta-catenin subcellular localization. The study of the beta-catenin expression pattern, beta-catenin mutations, and MI, together with conventional clinicopathologic findings, could aid in distinguishing between the metastatic or independent origin of simultaneous endometrioid ovarian and endometrial carcinomas. Tumors with identical immunohistochemical and molecular features should therefore be considered to have a common origin.

BACKGROUND: Mondor's disease is a rare entity characterized by thrombophlebitis of the subcutaneous veins of the anterolateral thoraco-abdominal wall. The most common clinical manifestations are a painful subcutaneous cord, sensation of tension, and skin retraction. This condition is usually a benign and self-limited process, although it has been associated with breast cancer. METHODS: We describe four new cases, two men and two women, and comment on the clinical signs and possible etiopathogenic features. General physical examination, radiologic and ecographic studies, laboratory analysis including tumor markers, and exhaustive coagulation study were carried out on all patients. RESULTS: No cases were associated with malignant disease and/or hypercoagulability stage. With conservative treatment, the evolution proved favorable in all patients. CONCLUSIONS: Mondor's disease is usually a benign and self-limited process, but we recommend laboratory studies and physical examination, including mammography in women, in order to rule out the presence of systemic disorders, especially breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Bilateral testicular biopsies and clinical histories from 34 adult men with maturational arrest of spermatogonia were examined. According to the morphology of Sertoli cell nuclei, five testicular types of spermatogonial maturational arrest were established. In type I lesion, Sertoli cells resembled the immature Sertoli cells of infant testes. These cells had a round, regularly outlined, dark nucleus with a small nucleolus. The seminiferous tubules showed no apparent lumen and a poorly developed lamina propria lacking in elastic fibres. This lesion was found in patients exhibiting a eunuchoid phenotype, with small tests and low serum levels of gonadotrophins and testosterone (hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism). Type II lesion showed morphologically normal, mature, adult Sertoli cells which had a pale, irregularly outlined nucleus, many often triangle-shaped, with a large, centrally located nucleolus. The seminiferous tubules were reduced in diameter and showed a few spermatocytes and spermatids. This lesion was found in patients with varicocoele, epididymitis, testicular trauma or idiopathic infertility. Serum FSH levels were normal or increased while LH and testosterone levels were normal. In type III lesion, Sertoli cells resembled the involuting Sertoli cells found in the testes of aging men, and displayed very infolded nuclei, with abundant dense chromatin patches and a large nucleolus. The seminiferous tubules showed a slightly dilated lumen and a normal tubular wall. The most relevant clinical findings in patients with this lesion were alcoholism, varicocoele, falciform cell anaemia, epididymitis and germ cell tumour. Serum follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were normal or increased while luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone levels were normal. Type IV lesion Sertoli cells presented with a de-differentiated appearance. These cells had a small, round euchromatic nucleus with a small nucleolus and vacuolated cytoplasm. The seminiferous tubules were devoid of lumen or ectatic, and the tubular wall was thick and contained abundant elastic fibres. This lesion was characteristic of patients who underwent hormonal treatment because of prostatic carcinoma or sex change. Type V lesion showed abnormally differentiated, probably dysgenetic, Sertoli cells which had a round to ovoid regularly outlined nucleus, with small heterochromatin granules, and the number of these cells was increased. The seminiferous tubules had a central lumen, or were ectatic with vacuolated Sertoli cells, and the amount of elastic fibres was decreased. The most relevant clinical finding in patients with this lesion was orchidopexy. Serum FSH and LH levels were normal or slightly increased. These findings indicate that spermatogonial maturational arrest is associated with a characteristic Sertoli cell morphology that can be easily identified. This morphology may shed light on the aetiology of the disorder, and be useful for establishing the prognosis and bases for treatment in subfertile patients.
