ABSTRACT

(1) Background: Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) has gained in popularity over the years due to its outstanding properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, and bioavailability, and its use as an eco-friendly material of the future for replacing petrochemical products. (2) Methods: This research refers to the utilization of lignocellulose coming from wood waste via enzymatic hydrolysis to produce biopolymer BNC with an accumulation rate of 0.09 mg/mL/day. Besides its significant contribution to the sustainability, circularity, and valorization of biomass products, the obtained BNC was functionalized through the adsorption of black raspberry extract (BR) by simple soaking. (3) Results: BR contained 77.25 ± 0.23 mg GAE/g of total phenolics and 27.42 ± 0.32 mg CGE/g of total anthocyanins. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of BR was evaluated by DPPH (60.51 ± 0.18 µg/mL) and FRAP (1.66 ± 0.03 mmol Fe2+/g) and using a standard disc diffusion assay, respectively. The successful synthesis and interactions between BNC and BR were confirmed by FTIR analysis, while the morphology of the new nutrient-enriched material was investigated by SEM analysis. Moreover, the in vitro release kinetics of a main active compound (cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside) was tested in different release media. (4) Conclusions: The upcycling process of lignocellulose into enriched BNC has been demonstrated. All findings emphasize the potential of BNC-BR as a sustainable food industry material.

ABSTRACT

Innovative eco-friendly methods based on natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) coupled with ultrasound-assisted extraction were employed for chokeberry anthocyanins extractions. Nine different NaDES composed of choline chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor and organic acids (lactic, citric, malic), sugars (glucose, fructose), polyols (glycerol, 1,2-propanediol, sorbitol), and an amide (urea) as hydrogen bond donors were screened. Malic acid-containing NaDES was selected for optimization extraction conditions (time, temperature, water in NaDES) by response surface methodology. Optimal conditions for simultaneously maximizing the anthocyanins extraction (cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-galactoside, cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside, total anthocyanins) were 42.7 °C, 90 min, and 40 % (w/w) water in NaDES. In the next stage of this study, the possibility to improve anthocyanins extraction at elevated temperatures by incorporating different concentrations of hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin into selected NaDES was investigated. The extraction was improved at hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin concentrations up to 3 % (w/w). To clarify the interaction of NaDES components and anthocyanins, a molecular dynamic simulation was conducted.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to investigate the biological activity and chemical composition of Satureja kitaibelii Wierzb. ex Heuff. LC-PDA/MS analyses for the aqueous extracts (A1-stem, leaves and flowers, A2-leaves and flowers) and ethyl-acetate extracts (E1-stem, leaves and flowers, E2-leaves and flowers) obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction enabled the identification of thirty-four compounds. Quantitative analysis revealed that the aqueous extract obtained from leaves and flowers was the richest in total phenolic acids (65.36 mg/g) and flavonoids (21.17 mg/g). The total polyphenol content was the highest in the aqueous extract obtained from leaves and flowers (274 ± 2.4 mg Gallic Acid equivalents/g). The best antioxidant activity was observed for the same extract using the DPPH (SC50 20 ± 10 µg/mL), ABTS (2.834 ± 0.02 mg Ascorbic Acid/g), FRAP (1.922 ± 0.03 mmol Fe2+/mg), and total reducing power tests (16.4 ± 1.0 mg Ascorbic Acid/g). Both ethyl acetate extracts were the most active against strains of Bacillus cereus and Micrococcus flavus (MIC 1.70-1.99 mg/mL and 1.99-3.41 mg/mL, respectively). They were more efficient against Aspergillus ochraceus (MFC 0.86 mg/mL) and towards HeLa cell lines. All the obtained results implied the good potential of the investigated extracts to be used as effective preservatives and functional ingredients in food products and dietary supplements.

ABSTRACT

Gentian (Gentiana lutea L., Gentianaceae) root extract (GRE) is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders. However, its bioactive potential is limited in conventional forms due to the low bioavailability and short elimination half-life of the dominant bioactive compound, gentiopicroside. The aim of study was to encapsulate GRE in the lipid-based gastroretentive delivery system that could provide high yield and encapsulation efficiency, as well as the biphasic release of gentiopicroside from the tablets obtained by direct compression. Solid lipid microparticles (SLM) loaded with GRE were prepared by freeze-drying double (W/O/W) emulsions, which were obtained by a multiple emulsion-melt dispersion technique, with GRE as the inner water phase, Gelucire® 39/01 or 43/01, as lipid components, with or without the addition of porous silica (Sylysia® 350) in the outer water phase. Formulated SLM powders were examined by SEM and mercury intrusion porosimetry, as well as by determination of yield, encapsulation efficiency, and flow properties. Furthermore, in vitro dissolution of gentiopicroside, the size of the dispersed systems, mechanical properties, and mucoadhesion of tablets obtained by direct compression were investigated. The results have revealed that SLM with the macroporous structure were formulated, and, consequently, the powders floated immediately in the acidic medium. Formulation with porous silica (Sylysia® 350) and Gelucire® 43/01 as a solid lipid was characterized with the high yield end encapsulation efficiency. Furthermore, the mucoadhesive properties of tablets obtained by direct compression of that formulation, as well as the biphasic release of gentiopicroside, presence of nanoassociates in dissolution medium, and optimal mechanical properties indicated that a promising lipid-based gastroretentive system for GRE was developed.

ABSTRACT

Pomegranate seed oil is valuable source of bioactive compounds with health-beneficial effects, but it is sensitive to oxidation due to high content of PUFA. In order to improve stability of pomegranate seed oil, the influence of natural antioxidant (0.1% pomegranate peel extract) and a combination of synthetic antioxidant (0.01% butylhydroxytoluene) and pomegranate peel extract (0.05%) was investigated. The oxidation process was followed by monitoring fatty acid composition and measuring the quality and stability parameters of oil (acid value, peroxide value, anisidine value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances value) during storage for 12 days at 65 °C. Furthermore, total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity was measured. Pomegranate peel extract as well as a combination of pomegranate peel extract and BHT can have a significant positive impact (P < 0.05) on improvement of the quality and stability parameters of pomegranate seed oil. Furthermore, such activity was better than BHT used alone.
