ABSTRACT

The amount of heat input during welding impacts the weld's thermal and mechanical behavior and the joint's properties. The current study involved conducting AA 6061 and AZ31B Mg dissimilar welding, using friction stir lap welding (FSLW) and ultrasonic vibration-enhanced FSLW (UVeFSLW). The comparison and analysis of the welding load, the weld's macro-microstructure, intermetallic compounds (IMCs), and joint properties were conducted by adjusting the process parameters. The study also examined the effect of ultrasonic vibration (UV) variations on welding heat input. The study demonstrated that it is possible to reduce the welding load by employing UV. Moreover, this impact becomes more pronounced as the welding heat input decreases. Additionally, the material flow in the weld, the width of the weld nugget zone, and the continuous IMC layer are significantly influenced by ultrasonic vibration, irrespective of the heat input during welding. However, the impact on large areas of irregular IMCs or eutectic structures is relatively small. Furthermore, achieving better joint properties becomes more feasible when a higher welding speed is employed for the Al alloy placed on top. Specifically, the impact of UV becomes more evident at higher welding speeds (≥220 mm/min).

ABSTRACT

A plant used in an Indonesian traditional herbal medicine as a diabetes treatment and known locally as "Jampu Salo" was collected on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. It was identified as Syzygium oblanceolatum (C. B. Rob.) Merr. (Myrtaceae) and found for the first time in Sulawesi; it was previously reported only in the eastern Philippines and Borneo. A phytochemical study of S. oblanceolatum led to the isolation of three unprecedented meroterpenoids, syzygioblanes A-C (1-3, respectively). These compounds might be biosynthesized through [4+2] cycloaddition of various germacrane-based cyclic sesquiterpenoids with the flavone desmethoxymatteucinol to form a spiro skeleton. The unique and complex structures were elucidated by microcrystal electron diffraction analysis in addition to general analytical techniques such as high-resolution mass spectrometry, various nuclear magnetic resonance methods, and infrared spectroscopy. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and calculations of electronic circular dichroism spectra helped to determine the absolute configurations. The newly isolated compounds exhibited collateral sensitivity to more strongly inhibit the growth of a multidrug resistant tumor cell line compared to a chemosensitive tumor cell line.

ABSTRACT

A phytochemical study on Spermacoce ocymoides has led to the isolation of a novel bis-indole alkaloid, spermaocymine A (2), together with the known alkaloid 4-methyl-borreverine (1), as well as an anthraquinone, 8-hydroxy-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1-methoxyanthracene-9,10-dione (3). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by analyzing spectroscopic and spectrometric data, including one-dimensional (1D)- and 2D-NMR and high resolution (HR)-MS. Newly isolated alkaloid 2 was a C-3,14-stereoisomer of 1, the first natural stereoisomer of related bis-indoles containing an indeno[1,2-b]indole skeleton with an epiminoethano bridge. When 1-3 were assayed against five tumor cell lines including multi-drug resistant cells, compound 1 exhibited potent antiproliferative activity with IC50 values of 6.2-11.5 µM.

ABSTRACT

Food packaging has seen a growth in the use of materials derived from renewable resources such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA). However, the initial costs to produce bioplastics are typically high. Tropical fruit waste as naturally sourced fibres, such as jackfruit skin, can be used as a cost-reducing filler for PLA. The main objective in this study is to fabricate a low-cost natural fibre-reinforced polymer that potentially applies in packaging with the aid of bleaching treatment. The treatment shows a rougher surface fibre in Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs and it is expected to have better mechanical locking with the matrix, and this is found similar with a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Unfortunately, fibre insertion does find low tensile performances, yet bleached-fibre composites improved its performance significantly. A similar situation was found in the thermal characterization where a low-thermal stability natural fibre composite has lower thermal behaviour and this increased with bleaching treatment. Besides, bleached-fibre composites have a longer service period. Besides, a 15 wt% thymol insertion inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria in the composites and the non-treated fibre composite has better thymol effects. The 30 wt% of the bleached-fibre insertion composite has a high potential to reduce the cost of bioplastic products with minimum alterations of overall performances.
