ABSTRACT

Fibrous dysplasia is a metabolic skeletal disorder in which the medullary spaces of affected bones are replaced by fibro-osseous tissue. Patients with fibrous dysplasia usually become symptomatic during childhood; the adolescent patient we describe is unusual because she was not known to suffer from fibrous dysplasia until she became pregnant and experienced a dramatic reactivation of the symptoms. The therapeutic implication of this case and reproductive counselling for young women with fibrous dysplasia are discussed.

ABSTRACT

Fifty-one males and 192 female subjects participated in an investigation of the characteristics of fathers of infants born to mothers aged younger than 18 years. Fathers were categorized by age: younger than 20 years v older than 20 years. Another group of older fathers paired with older women (greater than or equal to 20 years) was included for comparison. The older fathers paired with adolescent mothers were more similar to adolescent fathers than to older men paired with older women. The major differences between the adolescent partners and older partners of adolescent mothers occurred in the perception of marital conflict and ego development. The adolescent couple and the older man paired with an older woman perceived more marital conflict than did the older father and adolescent mother. Adolescent mothers paired with an older man also perceived less marital conflict than adolescent women whose partners were adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Adolescent pregnancy has long been considered high risk perinatally. It is also a symptom of social disorder. Older studies provided ominous portents of increased risk of toxemia, prematurity, anemia, cephalopelvic disproportion, and perinatal wastage. Studies during the past decade have shown more encouraging data, especially when representing a concerted effort toward this age group. The first 2 years of an intensive and individual approach to gravidas under age 17 are discussed. A total of 135 young women were studied and compared with 100 controls of similar age, treated routinely, and with 100 women of more nearly ideal childbearing age. Perinatal and social data are shown. The implications of the data are discussed in light of other studies. Few, if any, medical differences between the two groups of adolescents and the older women are noted. More important are the social and emotional factors in determining future difficulties.
