Morphological characteristics of the skeletal muscle biopsies from 10 children with idiopathic dilatational and hypertrophic cardiomyopathies are described. Methods of light and electron microscopy, histochemistry (mitochondrial enzymes, glycogen, lipids, calcium), morphometry and statistics were used. The presence of specific and nonspecific signs of systemic mitochondrial insufficiency, the character of histochemical distribution of the energetic substrates and the calcium suggest that this insufficiency is the basis of cardiomyopathies pathogenesis.

Skeletal muscle biopsies from 18 children and 8 from their mothers were studied in mitochondrial myopathies. It is shown that by means of electron microscopy, histochemistry, and morphometry the correct diagnosis of mitochondrial insufficiency is quite possible.

Light microscopy characteristics of mature rat testes were studied in control and hyperprolactinemia rats. The number of cells defined as granulocytes in interstitial regions adjacent to seminal ducts at stage VII and XII of spermatogenesis has been calculated. Normal deference difference between these parameters diminish in hyperprolactinemia. It is suggested that prolactin participates in intratesticular paracrine mechanisms regulation.

Tunica of the twisted spermatic canal is an important component of the hemato-testicular barrier ensuering a selected penetration of some substances (metabolites, hormones) from the blood bed into the "spermatogenic epithelium" and vice versa. The structure of this tunica in the male mice is not identical along the whole length of the twisted spermatic canals. The differences are connected with both number of layers, cellular and acellular, and with their distinction and, that is more essential, with differences in structure and function of myoid cells--the most important component of the peritubular tissue. The differences mentioned above demonstrate various degree of distinction of the hemato-testicular barrier along the course of the twisted spermatic canals of the mouse.

Boric acid in a dose of 1 g/kg was given orally to albino rats for a period of 2 weeks, daily. Changes in the nucleus and the cytoplasm of both the spermatozoids and spermatides were revealed at the early stages of their formation. The appearance of numerous multinuclear cells with an even and odd number of nuclei (from 2 to 10 and over) was noted. The formation of multinuclear cells can be apparently attributed to the action of boric acid on the prolonged processes of meiotic division of the spermatogenic epithelium cells (spermatocytes, spermatides).
