ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Severe hypoglycemia is a common and feared complication of medications used to lower blood glucose levels in individuals with diabetes. Psychoeducational interventions can prevent severe hypoglycemia in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We aim to determine the effectiveness of this approach among adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D) at elevated risk for severe hypoglycemia. METHODS: Preventing Hypoglycemia in Type 2 diabetes (PHT2) is a two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial. Participants are eligible if they are adults with T2D receiving care at an integrated group practice in Washington state and have experienced one or more episodes of severe hypoglycemia in the prior 12 months or have impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (Gold score ≥ 4). Participants are randomized to proactive nurse care management with or without my hypo compass, an evidence-based, psychoeducational intervention combining group and individual self-management training. For this study, my hypo compass was adapted to be suitable for adults with T2D and from an in-person to a virtual intervention over videoconference and telephone. The primary outcome is any self-reported severe hypoglycemia in the 12 months following the start of the intervention. Secondary outcomes include biochemical measures of hypoglycemia, self-reported hypoglycemia awareness, fear of hypoglycemia, and emergency department visits and hospitalizations for severe hypoglycemia. The study includes a process evaluation to assess implementation fidelity and clarify the causal pathway. CONCLUSION: The PHT2 trial will compare the effectiveness of two approaches for reducing severe hypoglycemia in adults with T2D. TRIAL REGISTRATION: clinicaltrials.gov, # NCT04863872.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the third leading cause of years lived with disability. Connections among ARHL, depressive symptoms, social engagement and cognitive status are increasingly reported but the underlying mechanisms leading to these relationships are largely unknown. Exploring these mechanisms is a worthy goal, especially in older adults. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of social engagement and depressive symptoms on the relationship between ARHL and cognitive status. METHODS: Structural equation modeling (SEM) with path analysis were performed with data from a cross-sectional study conducted in 11 community centers in 2021, which assessed older adults' intrinsic and sensory capacities using the WHO ICOPE framework. Demographic information, health profile, a binary measure of hearing capacity, depressive symptoms, social engagement, and cognitive status of participants were gathered. RESULTS: A total of 304 participants were included. ARHL was positively associated with depressive symptoms (ß = 0.18, p = 0.009) and negatively related to social engagement (ß = -0.13, p = 0.026). Social engagement was positively associated with cognitive status (ß = 0.17, p = 0.005) and negatively associated with depressive symptoms (ß = -0.23, p < 0.001). Greater depressive symptoms were negatively associated with the participants' cognition (ß = -0.13, p = 0.009). Both social engagement (ß = -0.02, p = 0.029) and depressive symptoms (ß = -0.02, p = 0.032) mediated the negative associations between ARHL and cognitive status. CONCLUSIONS: Addressing hearing loss, depressive symptoms, and enhancing social engagement should be investigated as a potential means of minimizing cognitive decline. Well-designed studies are needed to comprehensively inform the clinical practice development, particularly large prospective studies that will facilitate further elucidate possible causal mechanisms behind these observed associations.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Cancer does affect not only the lives of the patients but also that of their spouses. The aims of this systematic review are to (i) explore the gender differences in the impact of caregiving for cancer on spousal caregivers, (ii) facilitate the conceptual understanding of gender differences in caregiving, and (iii) identify directions for future research and clinical practice targeting spousal caregivers. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted of the electronic databases of MEDLINE, PsycINFO, EBSCO, and CINAHL Plus for papers published in English between 2000 and 2022. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to identify, select, appraise, and synthesize the studies. RESULTS: A total of 20 studies from seven countries were reviewed. Findings of the studies were presented using the biopsychosocial model. Spousal caregivers of cancer patients suffered from physical, psychological, and socioeconomic morbidities, with female spousal caregivers reporting a higher level of distress. The gendered positioning of spousal caregivers in the societal context had further brought about over-responsibility and self-sacrifice among women. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: The gendered positions of cancer spousal caregivers further illustrated the gender differences in the caregiving experiences and consequences. Health-care professionals in routine clinical practice should be proactive in identifying physical, mental, and social morbidities among cancer spousal caregivers, particularly female ones, and providing timely interventions. Health-care professionals should recognize the pressing need for empirical research, political engagement, and action plans to address the health status and health-related behaviors of patients' spouses along the cancer trajectory.

ABSTRACT

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) offers a unique opportunity to examine the underlying neuronal mechanisms of surgically assisted weight loss due to its instant, non-invasive, adjustable nature. Six participants with stable excess weight loss (%EWL ≥ 45) completed 2 days of fMRI scanning 1.5-5 years after LAGB surgery. In a within-subject randomized sham-controlled design, participants underwent (sham) removal of ∼ 50% of the band's fluid. Compared to sham-deflation (i.e., normal band constriction) of the band, in the deflation condition (i.e., decreasing restriction) participants showed significantly lower activation in the anterior (para)cingulate, angular gyrus, lateral occipital cortex, and frontal cortex in response to food images (p < 0.05, whole brain TFCE-based FWE corrected). Higher activation in the deflation condition was seen in the fusiform gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, lingual gyrus, lateral occipital cortex. The findings of this within-subject randomized controlled pilot study suggest that constriction of the stomach through LAGB may indirectly alter brain activation in response to food cues. These neuronal changes may underlie changes in food craving and food preference that support sustained post-surgical weight-loss. Despite the small sample size, this is in agreement with and adds to the growing literature of post-bariatric surgery changes in behavior and control regions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Patient satisfaction had been the focus of many scientific studies worldwide. However, very few studies published had addressed the definition of the concept of patient satisfaction. Therefore this present concept analysis is to explore the attributes of the concept in the broader healthcare context. METHODS: The Rodgers method, an inductive method of concept analysis, was selected to guide this concept analysis. RESULTS: The attributes of patient satisfaction in the healthcare context identified were provider attitude, technical competence, accessibility, and efficacy. Perception in relation to expectation, patient demographics and personality, and market competition were regarded as prerequisites of patient satisfaction. Consequences of patient satisfaction identified in this analysis were: patient compliance, clinical outcomes, loyalty and referrals. CONCLUSION: As healthcare is becoming an increasingly competitive marketplace, studying patient experience could certainly help practitioners to better encompass patient perspectives in service delivery and improve patient satisfaction. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: To ensure the validity of patient satisfaction measurement and subsequently improve healthcare quality, practitioners should involve patients in identifying important factors relevant to each attributes of patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgeries are considered effective treatments for weight loss and improved diabetes control. Statins increase diabetes onset in prospective clinical trials and many bariatric patients with metabolic disease are concurrently on statins. OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively examined the relationship of statin therapy to weight loss, diabetes mellitus onset and remission, and metabolic outcomes after bariatric surgery. SETTING: Hospital. METHODS: A total of 1575 patients (1231 women) underwent laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (n = 1035), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (n = 468), or sleeve gastrectomy (n = 72) and were categorized as to statin use (n = 671 statin users) and diabetes status (n = 557 patients with diabetes) preoperatively and at one year follow-up. RESULTS: New onset cases of diabetes did not differ between patients on and not on preoperative statins (3 versus 4 new diabetes cases, respectively), but diabetes resolved after surgery in 159 (23.7%) patients on preoperative statins and in only 124 (13.7%) patients not on preoperative statins (χ2 = 26.1; P<.01). Patients ceasing statin therapy experienced more diabetes remission (n = 85 or 35.7%) than patients consistently using statin therapy at both time points (n = 57 or 17.0%; χ2 = 27.3; P< .01). CONCLUSION: In contrast to expectations, our results suggest that diabetes resolves with bariatric surgery more often in patients maintained on statin therapy than in those never on statin therapy whereas cessation of statin therapy is associated with the greatest reductions in diabetes prevalence. These results indicate an impact of statin use on metabolic outcomes following bariatric surgery; a randomized control trial is needed to examine carefully this relationship.

BACKGROUND: Surgical weight loss response is variable, with suboptimal outcomes in some patients. We hypothesized that genetic biomarkers may be related to weight change. METHODS: We tested 330 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes relevant to metabolic regulation in 161 patients whose decrease in body mass index (BMI), 1 year after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), was small (lowest quartile response) or large (highest quartile response). LAGB patients whose BMI decreased≤4.7 or≥10.2 units comprised groups I (n = 43) and II (n = 40), respectively. RYGB patients whose BMI decreased≤13.6 or≥19.8 units comprised groups III (n = 39) and IV (n = 39), respectively. Within each surgery, SNPs with large differences in reference allele frequency (z score>2, corresponding to values displaced 2 standard deviations [SD] from the mean for all SNPs) in low versus high quartiles, were identified. We compared reference allele frequencies, within surgical procedure, using the χ(2) test (using Bonferroni correction for multiple testing). RESULTS: The mean percent excess weight losses (±SD) corresponding to groups I, II, III, and IV were: 16 (±12), 64 (±30), 55 (±16), and 75 (±17), respectively. SNPs with z score>2 were identified in genes involved in LAGB response, lipid metabolic regulation (APOE, rs439401; APOC4, rs2288911), neural processes (DRD3, rs167771; HTR3 B, rs3758987), and xeno- or endobiotic metabolism (CYP3 A4, rs12333983); and for RYGB response, in lipid transport (SCARB1, rs10846744), folate metabolism (MTHFR, rs2066470), regulation of glycolysis in immune cells (HIF1 A, rs1951795), vitamin K cycling (VKORC1, rs2359612), and xeno- or endobiotic metabolism (CYP3 A4, rs2242480). For LAGB response, APOE SNP frequencies were significantly different. CONCLUSIONS: With further validation, information derived from patient DNA may be useful to predict surgical weight loss outcomes and guide selection of surgical approach.

OBJECTIVE: While the benefits of hearing aids among older adults with presbycusis have been well documented, there is limited research on hearing-aid usage. The aim of this review is to synthesize current evidence to identify the determinants of hearing-aid adoption and use among the elderly. DESIGN: Systematic review. STUDY SAMPLE: Articles were identified through systematic searches in the Web of Science, Medline, CINAHL, and a manual search. Studies that explore the potential determinants of hearing-aid usage were to be included. RESULTS: A total of twenty-two articles were reviewed. Four audiological determinants (the severity of hearing loss, the type of hearing aids, background noise acceptance, and insertion gain) and seven non-audiological determinants (self-perceived hearing problems, expectation, demographics, group consultation, support from significant others, self-perceived benefit, and satisfaction) were identified as affecting the adoption and use of hearing aids. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to explore the influence of significant others, health professionals, and user demographics on hearing rehabilitation for future research. The determinants identified in this review depicted the stage progression of the trans-theoretical model (TTM) in explaining an individual's readiness to hearing-aid usage.

PURPOSE: In Caucasian women, research has shown that energy balance and taste preference change throughout the menstrual cycle. However, the contributory role of the menstrual cycle to obesity and insulin resistance among Asian women remains unclear. We investigate the impact of the menstrual cycle on energy balance and taste preference in Singaporean Chinese females. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy young Chinese female subjects with regular menstrual cycles were recruited. Anthropometrics, body composition, energy intake, resting metabolic rate, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) severity and taste preference to sucrose were assessed during three phases (menses, follicular and luteal), over one (N = 18) to two (N = 13) menstrual cycles. RESULTS: For all subjects (N = 31), we found significant reductions in energy, fat intake (p < 0.05) and taste preference for sucrose (p < 0.05) in the luteal phase compared to early follicular phase as far as Cycle 1 is concerned. No significant differences were observed for carbohydrate and protein intake as well as PMS score. In those evaluated for two full cycles (N = 13), we found that taste preference for sucrose and PMS score were significantly higher in the menstrual phase in Cycle 2 (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in energy and macronutrient intake throughout Cycle 2. RMR was similar across the three phases. However, non-significant cyclic variations were noted within and between the cycles. CONCLUSION: Cyclic variations in energy intake and expenditure contributed by sensory and behavioural changes occur during the menstrual cycle. Whether this contributes to cyclic weight gain is speculative and remains to be proven. Further research in non-Caucasians spanning more than one menstrual cycle is needed to establish the impact of the menstrual cycle on taste preference and energy balance.

BACKGROUND: Demographic factors such as ethnicity may affect bariatric surgery outcomes. We examined weight loss and co-morbidities outcomes in African American, Caucasian, and Hispanic patients who underwent laparoscopic gastric banding (LAGB) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The primary aim was to investigate demographic differences in weight loss and co-morbidities outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively examined weight change and co-morbidities outcomes in our prospective database. A total of 1,903 patients underwent LAGB or RYGB between January 1, 2005 and March 31, 2012. Of those, 1828 completed their 1-year follow-up visit (9-15 mo) and had complete data. We excluded patients who were missing ethnicity information, resulting in a final cohort of 1,684 patients. Multivariate analyses and χ2 tests were used to examine demographic variables in body mass index (BMI) change, percent excess weight loss (%EWL), and remission of co-morbidities. We also examined weight loss outcomes at 2- and 3-year follow-up. RESULTS: Overall, those who underwent RYGB had a lower BMI and greater %EWL at 1, 2, and 3 years compared to those who had undergone LAGB. Overall, African American patients had a higher postoperative BMI than either Caucasian or Hispanic patients. African American patients also showed less %EWL than Caucasian and Hispanic patients. When we examined within surgery type, ethnic differences between African American and Caucasian patients were present across all 3 years in RYGB, but there were no ethnic differences by year 3 in LAGB. Additionally, African American and Hispanic patients no longer differed by year 3 in RYGB and by year 2 in LAGB. There were no significant ethnic differences in remission of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and sleep apnea at 1 year. CONCLUSION: Our study found significant ethnic differences in the postoperative BMI and %EWL, which were more pronounced in patients undergoing RYGB than LAGB at the 3-year time point. These weight loss differences did not translate to a lower rate of co-morbidities remission.

BACKGROUND: Few treatments for idiopathic and diabetic gastroparesis exist beyond symptom management, and no study has described gastric surgery for gastroparesis in obese and morbidly obese patients. The objective of this study was to describe treatment of recalcitrant gastroparesis in obese adults with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of adult patients who underwent laparoscopic RYGB. Clinical data pre- and postsurgery and at a follow-up of up to 2 years were reviewed. Total symptom scores for gastroparetic symptom severity and frequency were compared presurgery and at follow-up using paired t tests. RESULTS: Seven obese and morbidly obese patients (body mass index [BMI] = 39.5, range = 33-54; 6 women) with idiopathic or diabetic gastroparesis reported marked symptom improvement, and total symptom scores significantly decreased after RYGB. All 4 patients who were taking prokinetics preoperatively no longer required their medication after surgery. Three patients required prolonged treatment with antinausea medications in the postoperative period. Mean BMI change was 9.1 units and mean percent excess weight lost was 71.6 lbs. No perioperative complications were experienced. Two required readmissions due to various concerns (dysphagia, nausea, anastomotic ulcer). CONCLUSIONS: In our cohort, no patients required the use of prokinetics after surgery and everyone experienced significant improvement in symptoms. Importantly, we found that RYGB is a safe surgical treatment for gastroparesis in obese patients. Our results indicate that gastroparesis, primarily believed to result in being underweight, can present in morbid obesity and can be markedly improved with RYGB.

BACKGROUND: Increasing school breakfast participation has been advocated as a method to prevent childhood obesity. However, little is known about children's breakfast patterns outside of school (e.g., home, corner store). Policies that increase school breakfast participation without an understanding of children's breakfast habits outside of school may result in children consuming multiple breakfasts and may undermine efforts to prevent obesity. The aim of the current study was to describe morning food and drink consumption patterns among low-income, urban children and their associations with relative weight. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted of data obtained from 651 4th-6th graders (51.7% female, 61.2% African American, 10.7 years) in 2012. Students completed surveys at school that included all foods eaten and their locations that morning. Height and weight were measured by trained research staff. RESULTS: On the day surveyed, 12.4% of youth reported not eating breakfast, 49.8% reported eating one breakfast, 25.5% reported eating two breakfasts, and 12.3% reported eating three or more breakfasts. The number of breakfasts consumed and BMI percentile showed a significant curvilinear relationship, with higher mean BMI percentiles observed among children who did not consume any breakfast and those who consumed ≥ 3 breakfasts. Sixth graders were significantly less likely to have consumed breakfast compared to younger children. A greater proportion of obese youth had no breakfast (18.0%) compared to healthy weight (10.1%) and overweight youth (10.7%, p = .01). CONCLUSIONS: When promoting school breakfast, policies will need to be mindful of both over- and under-consumption to effectively address childhood obesity and food insecurity. BACKGROUND: Past medical or family history of autoimmune diseases and patient chronic steroid use are label contraindications for laparoscopic placement of adjustable gastric band (LAGB). We reviewed our experience with placement of LAGB in patients with autoimmune disease or chronic steroid use. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of our prospective bariatric database. All patients who underwent LAGB and had a diagnosis of autoimmune disease or chronic steroid use with at least 1-year follow-up data were included in the study. Data on demographics, weight loss, and complications were collected. RESULTS: Sixteen patients with autoimmune diseases or chronic steroid use underwent LAGB. Diseases included were lupus (n = 6), sarcoidosis (n = 4), renal transplant (n = 2), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 1), ulcerative colitis (n = 1), Grave's disease (n = 1), and celiac disease (n = 1). No patients developed infectious complications. One patient required port replacement due to malfunction, and one patient underwent a conversion to gastric bypass due to failure of weight loss. The average preoperative body mass index was 46.8 kg/m(2) with an average weight of 292.0 lbs. Average excess weight loss was 39.8 % (range, 7.4 to 95.5 %) at a median follow-up of 54 months. CONCLUSIONS: Our review indicates that LAGB in patients with autoimmune diseases or chronic steroid use is safe, with no infectious complications and only one explant. Some of these autoimmune conditions may improve following significant weight loss, but larger studies are required to further substantiate these findings.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Linear accelerators operating at or above 10 MV produce neutrons by photonuclear reactions and induce activation in machine components, which are a source of potential exposure for radiation therapists. This study estimated gamma dose contributions to radiation therapists during high energy, whole pelvic, photon beam treatments and determined the optimum room entry times, in terms of safety of radiation therapists. METHODS: Two types of technique (anterior-posterior opposing and 3-field technique) were studied. An Elekta Precise treatment system, operating up to 18 MV, was investigated. Measurements with an area monitoring device (a Mini 900R radiation monitor) were performed, to calculate gamma dose rates around the radiotherapy facility. Measurements inside the treatment room were performed when the linear accelerator was in use. The doses received by radiation therapists were estimated, and optimum room entry times were determined. RESULTS: The highest gamma dose rates were approximately 7 µSv/h inside the treatment room, while the doses in the control room were close to background (~0 µSv/h) for all techniques. The highest personal dose received by radiation therapists was estimated at 5 mSv/yr. To optimize protection, radiation therapists should wait for up to11 min after beam-off prior to room entry. CONCLUSIONS: The potential risks to radiation therapists with standard safety procedures were well below internationally recommended values, but risks could be further decreased by delaying room entry times. Dependent on the technique used, optimum entry times ranged between 7 to 11 min. A balance between moderate treatment times versus reduction in measured equivalent doses should be considered.

ABSTRACT

Behavioral studies reveal that obese vs. lean individuals show attentional bias to food stimuli. Yet research has not investigated this relation using objective brain imaging or tested whether attentional bias to food stimuli predicts future weight gain, which are important aims given the prominence of food cues in the environment. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine attentional bias in 35 adolescent girls ranging from lean to obese using an attention network task involving food and neutral stimuli. BMI correlated positively with speed of behavioral response to both appetizing food stimuli and unappetizing food stimuli, but not to neutral stimuli. BMI correlated positively with activation in brain regions related to attention and food reward, including the anterior insula/frontal operculum, lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), and superior parietal lobe, during initial orientation to food cues. BMI also correlated with greater activation in the anterior insula/frontal operculum during reallocation of attention to appetizing food images and with weaker activation in the medial OFC and ventral pallidum during reallocation of attention to unappetizing food images. Greater lateral OFC activation during initial orientation to appetizing food cues predicted future increases in BMI. Results indicate that overweight is related to greater attentional bias to food cues and that youth who show elevated reward circuitry responsivity during food cue exposure are at increased risk for weight gain.

ABSTRACT

We tested the hypothesis that obese individuals experience greater activation of the gustatory and somatosensory cortex, but weaker activation of the striatum, in response to intake and anticipated intake of high-fat chocolate milkshake versus an isocaloric milkshake labeled low-fat and a tasteless solution using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with 17 obese and 17 lean young women. Obese relative to lean women showed greater activation in somatosensory (Rolandic operculum), gustatory (frontal operculum), and reward valuation regions (amgydala, ventralmedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in response to intake and anticipated intake of milkshake versus tasteless solution, though there was little evidence of reduced striatal activation. Obese relative to lean women also showed greater activation in the Rolandic operculum, frontal operculum, and vmPFC in response to isocaloric milkshakes labeled regular versus low-fat. Results suggest that hyper-responsivity of somatosensory, gustatory, and reward valuation regions may be related to overeating and that top-down processing influence reward encoding, which could further contribute to weight gain.

ABSTRACT

The authors tested whether a brief indicated cognitive-behavioral depression prevention program produced similar effects for Asian American, Latino, and European American adolescents (M age = 17.3, SD = 1.6) with elevated depressive symptoms using data from two randomized trials. The first trial involved 37 Asian-American/Pacific Islanders, 32 Latinos, and 98 European Americans and the second trial involved 61 Latinos and 72 European Americans. Reductions in depressive symptoms from pre- to post-intervention and from pre to 6-month follow-up for intervention participants versus assessment-only controls did not differ significantly for the various ethnic groups in either trial, despite sufficient power to detect clinically meaningful differences. These findings suggest that this indicated depression prevention intervention is similarly efficacious for Asian American, Latino and European American adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Prospective studies have identified factors that increase risk for eating pathology onset, including perceived pressure for thinness, thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, and negative affect. Research also suggests that body dissatisfaction and dietary restraint may constitute prodromal stages of the development of eating disorders. Prevention trials indicate that interventions that reduce pressure to be thin, thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, and negative affect significantly reduce eating disorder symptoms. Further, there is evidence that selective prevention programs that target young women at elevated risk for eating pathology by virtue of thin-ideal internalization, body dissatisfaction, and negative affect produce significant larger intervention effects than do universal programs offered to unselected populations. Thus, research on risk factors and prodromal stages of eating pathology has assisted in the design of efficacious prevention programs and the identification of high-risk individuals to target with these interventions; additional research in this area may lead to even more effective prevention programs.

ABSTRACT

This report reviews findings from studies that have investigated whether abnormalities in reward from food intake and anticipated food intake increase risk for obesity. Self-report and behavioral data suggest that obese relative to lean individuals show elevated anticipatory and consummatory food reward. Brain imaging studies suggest that obese relative to lean individuals show greater activation of the gustatory cortex (insula/frontal operculum) and oral somatosensory regions (parietal operculum and Rolandic operculum) in response to anticipated intake and consumption of palatable foods. Yet, data also suggest that obese relative to lean individuals show less activation in the dorsal striatum in response to consumption of palatable foods and reduced striatal D2 dopamine receptor density. Emerging prospective data also suggest that abnormal activation in these brain regions increases risk for future weight gain and that genotypes associated with lowered dopamine signaling amplify these predictive effects. Results imply that individuals who show greater activation in the gustatory cortex and somatosensory regions in response to anticipation and consumption of food, but who show weaker activation in the striatum during food intake, may be at risk for overeating, particularly those at genetic risk for lowered dopamine receptor signaling.
