ABSTRACT

We tested whether CSD500 (Futura Medical; Guildford, UK), a novel condom containing erectogenic gel designed to increase penile firmness, penile size, and erection duration, results in greater sexual pleasure. In 2017-2020, we randomized heterosexual couples in Thanh Hoa, Vietnam to use CSD500 (N = 248) or standard condoms (N = 252) and followed them up for six months. Women completed the Quality of Sexual Experience (QSE) scale; men completed the QSE, Sexual Experience Questionnaire (SEX-Q), and 11 condom acceptability items. Female participants' mean age was 32.1 years (SD = 0.24; range 21-46). QSE scores were higher among women (B, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.03-0.21) and men (B, 0.21; 95% CI, 0.08-0.35) in the CSD500 relative to the control arm. SEX-Q scores were higher among men in the CSD500 compared to the control arm (B, 3.22; 95% CI, 1.53-4.91). Higher proportions of men in the CSD500 relative to the control arm reported the condom felt "natural" during sex (68.6% vs. 32.3%; p < .01) and that sex with the condom felt "a lot better" than condomless sex (15.5% vs. 5.3%; p < .01). Compared with standard condoms, CSD500 use was associated with higher reports of sexual pleasure and condom acceptability.

ABSTRACT

Cationization of agricultural by-products using metal salts is widely used to activate their phosphorous capture ability. This study developed three kinds of new metal loaded soybean milk by-product 'okara' for phosphorus biosorption. A comparative study among these biosorbents was carried out with respect to their performances in terms of affinity, stability and reusability. Zirconium loaded okara (ZLO) was found to have the highest affinity towards PO(4)(3-) anions (47.88 mg/g), followed by iron/zirconium loaded okara--IZLO (40.96 mg/g) and iron loaded okara--ILO (16.39 mg/g). ZLO was successfully desorbed with 0.2M NaOH and activated with 0.1 HCl prior to the next cycle. After five consecutive cycles, the efficiency of both adsorption and desorption of ZLO remained about 85% whilst no Zr(IV) leakage was observed. Conversely, IZLO and ILO suffered from vital short comings such as high metal release and/or sharp reduction in PO4(3-) sequestering capability after multi operation cycles.

ABSTRACT

Biosorption on lignocellulosic wastes and by-products has been identified as a proper alternative to the existing technologies applied for toxic metal ion and dye removal from wastewater streams. This paper deals with utilization of typical low cost wastes and by-products produced in different food agricultural and agro-industries as biosorbent and reviews the current state of studies on a wide variety of cheap biosorbents in natural and modified forms. The efficiency of each biosorbent has been also discussed with respect to the operating conditions (e.g. temperature, hydraulic residence time, initial metal concentration, biosorbent particle size and its dosage), chemical modification on sorption capacity and preparation methods, as well as thermodynamics and kinetics.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of physical activity on maternal-fetal circulation measured by uterine and umbilical artery Doppler flow velocimetry waveforms. STUDY DESIGN: Participants included 781 pregnant women with Doppler ultrasounds of the uterine and umbilical artery and who self-reported past week physical activity. Linear and generalized estimating equation regression models were used to examine these associations. RESULT: Moderate-to-vigorous total and recreational activity were associated with higher uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) and an increased risk of uterine artery notching as compared with reporting no total or recreational physical activity, respectively. Moderate-to-vigorous work activity was associated with lower uterine artery PI and a reduced risk of uterine artery notching as compared with no work activity. No associations were identified with the umbilical circulation measured by the resistance index. CONCLUSION: In this epidemiologic study, recreational and work activity were associated with opposite effects on uterine artery PI and uterine artery notching, although associations were modest in magnitude.

ABSTRACT

We present and use an algorithm based on convex conic optimization to design two-dimensional photonic crystals with large absolute band gaps. Among several illustrations we show that it is possible to design photonic crystals which exhibit multiple absolute band gaps for the combined transverse electric and magnetic modes. The optimized crystals show complicated patterns which are far different from existing photonic crystal designs. We employ subspace approximation and mesh adaptivity to enhance computational efficiency. For some examples involving two band gaps, we demonstrate the tradeoff frontier between two different absolute band gaps.

ABSTRACT

Fracture mechanics tests were performed to characterize the fracture toughness and fatigue crack-growth behaviour of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement, commonly used in joint replacement surgery. Compact tension specimens of various thicknesses were prepared and tested in both air and Ringer's solution. Contrary to previous reports citing toughness as a single valued parameter, the PMMA was found to exhibit resistance-curve behaviour with a plateau toughness of approximately 0.6 MPa m1/2 in air, and approximately 2.0 MPa m1/2 in Ringer's solution. The increased toughness in Ringer's solution is thought to arise from the plasticizing effect of the environment. Under cyclic loads, the material displayed true mechanical fatigue failure in both environments; fatigue crack-growth rates, da/dN, were measured over the range approximately 10(-10) to 10(-6) m/cycle and found to display a power-law dependence on the stress intensity range, DeltaK. The cement was found to be more resistant to fatigue-crack propagation in Ringer's solution than in air. Wear debris was observed on the fatigue fracture surfaces, particularly those produced in air. These findings and the validity of using a linear-elastic fracture mechanics approach for viscoelastic materials are discussed in the context of providing more reliable and fracture-resistant cemented joints.
