ABSTRACT
Yield-prediction models were studied for efficient exfoliation of soft layered materials stacked via van der Waals interactions with the assistance of machine learning on small experimental data. High-yield exfoliation of graphite and layered organic polymer was achieved under the conditions guided by the models in a limited number of experiments.
ABSTRACT
This article developes a pediatric membrane oxygenator that is compact, high performance, and highly safe. This novel experimental approach, which imaging the inside of a membrane oxygenator during fluid perfusion using high-power X-ray CT, identifies air and blood retention in the local part of a membrane oxygenator. The cause of excessive pressure drop in a membrane oxygenator, which has been the most serious dysfunction in cardiovascular surgery and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), is the local retention of blood and air inside the oxygenator. Our designed blood flow channel for a membrane oxygenator has a circular channel and minimizes the boundary between laminated parts. The pressure drop in the blood flow channel is reduced, and the maximum gas transfer rates are increased by using this pediatric membrane oxygenator, as compared with the conventional oxygenator. Furthermore, it would be possible to reduce the incidents, which have occurred clinically, due to excessive pressure drop in the blood flow channel of the membrane oxygenator. The membrane oxygenator is said to be the "last stronghold" for patients with COVID-19 receiving ECMO treatment. Accordingly, the specification of our prototype is promising for low weight and pediatric patients.
ABSTRACT
The present study demonstrated the enhanced hydroxyl (OH) radical generation by combined use of dual-frequency (0.5 MHz and 1 MHz) ultrasound (US) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) as sonocatalyst. The OH radical generation became the maximum, when 0.5 MHz US was irradiated at an intensity of 0.8 W/cm(2) and 1 MHz US was irradiated at intensities at 0.4 W/cm(2) in the presence of TiO2 NPs under the examined conditions. After incorporation of TiO2 NPs modified with targeting protein pre-S1/S2, HepG2 cancer cells were subjected to the dual-frequency US at optimum irradiation intensities ("targeted-TiO2/dual-US treatment"). Growth of the HepG2 cells was reduced by 46% compared with the control condition after irradiation of dual-frequency US for 60s with TiO2 NPs incorporation. In contrast, HepG2 cell growth was almost the same as that in the control condition when cells were irradiated with either 0.5 MHz or 1 MHz ultrasound alone without TiO2 NP incorporation.
