ABSTRACT

Objective This study evaluated the epidemiological data and functional outcomes from patients with concomitant distal radial and scaphoid fractures treated in a single center specialized in hand surgery. Functional outcomes analysis used validated instruments. Methods Patients diagnosed with distal radial and scaphoid fractures treated from January 2011 to December 2021 underwent assessments using the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH), Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE), Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, goniometry, radiographic consolidation, and complications six months after surgery. Results The study included 23 patients, 73.9% men and 26.1% women. Most (56.5%) fractures occurred on the right side, and 43.5% happened on the left side. Treatment of most (56%) distal radial fractures used a locked volar plate. Functional assessment by PRWE resulted in a mean score of 35.9 points (range, 14 to 71 points), while DASH showed a mean score of 37.8 points (range, 12 to 78 points). The mean VAS was 2.33 during activities (range, 0.6 to 6.2). Conclusion Distal radial fractures associated with scaphoid fractures resulted from high-energy trauma, and most patients were males. There was a low rate of complications with surgical treatment, and the patients had satisfactory functional evolution with a low level of pain.

ABSTRACT

Deep learning has rapidly increased in popularity, leading to the development of perception solutions for autonomous driving. The latter field leverages techniques developed for computer vision in other domains for accomplishing perception tasks such as object detection. However, the black-box nature of deep neural models and the complexity of the autonomous driving context motivates the study of explainability in these models that perform perception tasks. Moreover, this work explores explainable AI techniques for the object detection task in the context of autonomous driving. An extensive and detailed comparison is carried out between gradient-based and perturbation-based methods (e.g., D-RISE). Moreover, several experimental setups are used with different backbone architectures and different datasets to observe the influence of these aspects in the explanations. All the techniques explored consist of saliency methods, making their interpretation and evaluation primarily visual. Nevertheless, numerical assessment methods are also used. Overall, D-RISE and guided backpropagation obtain more localized explanations. However, D-RISE highlights more meaningful regions, providing more human-understandable explanations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach to obtaining explanations focusing on the regression of the bounding box coordinates.

ABSTRACT

With the growing world population and industrial production, the demand for water has been continuously increasing. By 2030, 60.0% of the world population will not have access to freshwater, which is ∼2.50% of the total global water. For this, a total of over 17,000 operational desalination plants have been constructed worldwide. However, the key barrier to desalination expansion is brine production, which is 50.0% higher than the freshwater, generating 5.0-33.0% of total desalination cost. In this paper, a new theoretical approach for brine treatments has been proposed. It consists in combining electrokinetic and electrochemical mechanisms by using an alkaline clay with high buffering power. Advanced numerical model has been carried out to estimate the ions concentrations in the brine-clay-seawater system. Analytical analyses have been also carried out to estimate the global system efficiency. Results show the feasibility of the theoretical system, its size, and usability of the clay. This model not only should clean the brine to produce new treated seawater but also it should recover useful minerals thank to the electrolysis and precipitations effects.

This study evaluated the effect of aging and cementation of fiber posts using glass ionomer and resin cements on push-out bond strength, failure mode, and resin tag formation. One hundred and twenty bovine incisors were used. After post-space preparation, the specimens were randomly allocated into 12 groups (n = 10) according to the cementation system used: GC - GC Gold Label Luting & Lining); RL - RelyX Luting 2; MC - MaxCem Elite; RU - RelyX U200 and the aging periods (24 hours, 6 months, and 12 months). Slices from the cervical, middle, and apical thirds were obtained and analyzed by push-out bond strength test and confocal laser scanning microscopy. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test was used at a significance level of 5%. For the push-out bond strength test, no differences among GC, RU, and MC in the cervical and middle thirds were observed, regardless of the period of storage (P > 0.05). In the apical third, GC and RU showed similar bond strength but higher than other groups (P > 0.05). After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength (P < 0.05). Bond strength to post-space dentin decreased over time, regardless of the cementation system used. Cohesive failure was the most frequent, regardless of the period of storage, cementation system, and post-space third. Tag formation was similar among all groups. After 12 months, GC showed the highest bond strength values.

Resumo Avaliar o efeito do envelhecimento e sistemas de cimentação usando ionômero de vidro e cimentos resinosos na resistência de união à dentina após a cimentação do pino de fibra. Cento e vinte incisivos bovinos foram utilizados. Após o preparo do pós-espaço, os corpos de prova foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em 12 grupos (n = 10) de acordo com o período de envelhecimento (24 horas, 6 meses e 12 meses) e o sistema de cimentação utilizado: GC - cimento de ionômero de vidro (GC Gold Label Cimentação e Revestimento); RL - RelyX Luting 2; MC - MaxCem Elite; RU - RelyX U200. Cortes dos terços cervical, médio e apical foram obtidos e analisados por teste de resistência de união push-out e microscopia confocal de varredura a laser. ANOVA one-way e teste de Tukey foi usado a um nível de significância de 5%. Para o teste de resistência de união, não foram observadas diferenças entre GC, RU e MC nos terços cervical e médio, independentemente do período de armazenamento (P > 0,05). No terço apical, GC e RU apresentaram resistência de união semelhante, porém superior aos demais grupos (P > 0,05). Após 12 meses, o GC apresentou a maior resistência de união (P < 0,05). A resistência de união à dentina no espaço para pino diminuiu ao longo do tempo, independentemente do sistema de cimentação utilizado. A formação de tags foi semelhante entre todos os grupos. Após 12 meses, o GC apresentou os maiores valores de resistência de união.

Studies on the morphology of the reproductive system are essential for understanding the reproduction processes of species or even within genera or families. The present study aimed to describe the functional morphology of the male reproductive system, spermatophore formation, and sperm count of Macrobrachium brasiliense. The anatomy of the reproductive system consists of a pair of testes from which the vasa deferentia (VD) starts, extending to the fifth pair of pereopods. The VD is divided into three regions: proximal (PVD), middle (MVD), and distal (DVD). In the PVD, there is a prominent fold, the typhlosole, formed by columnar cells. The typhlosole disappears in the MVD, being incorporated into one of the faces of the VD wall, identified by its simple columnar epithelium while the remainder of the vessel wall is formed by squamous or simple cubic epithelium. Columnar cells produce type-II and III secretion. The epithelium in the DVD is made up only of cubic cells. Low sperm concentration was observed when compared to other species of the genus Macrobrachium. In conclusion, the typhlosole and columnar epithelium are responsible for the asymmetric spermatophore, which seems the pattern of Macrobrachium that is probably shared with other caridean shrimps.

ABSTRACT

Male morphotypes in a population may lead to the development of social dominance hierarchies in crustacean species. Currently, Macrobrachium is the decapod crustacean genus with the largest record of species that present the development of hierarchies. Macrobrachium olfersii has morphological characteristics that indicate the presence of male social dominance within its populations. Thus, the present study tested the hypothesis of the occurrence of male morphotypes in M. olfersii through morphometric and morphological analysis of the chelipeds. Sampling was carried out from March 2018 to October 2021 in seven points along the Jequitinhonha River, Northeast Brazil. A total of 264 males were collected with carapace length (CL) ranging from 4.01 to 23.70 mm. Morphological sexual maturity size was estimated at 8.95 mm CL. The morphometric and morphological analysis confirmed the presence of three adult male morphotypes: M1, M2, and M3. The characterization of the different morphotypes was mainly due to the variation in size, shape, and morphology of the largest cheliped of the second pair of pereopods. Most morphometric relationships differed significantly (p < 0.01) among the three morphotypes, mainly between M3 against M1 and M2. The variation in the propodus shape was also evident. This trait and the angulation of the spines differed significantly between morphotypes (p < 0.01), with the propodus of morphotype M3 being more robust and carrying a greater number of spines than the others. The occurrence of social dominance and the exaggerated development of a cheliped (weapon) can be advantageous for dominant individuals when they need to compete for resources. This morphological trait can provide these individuals with advantages during fights and guarantee access to the best resources, whether they are shelter, food, or sexual partners. Our results add new information to the biology of M. olfersii, as well as the genus Macrobrachium, and the occurrence of social dominance in species of this group. In addition, by describing these morphotypes in detail, using a set of complementary morphological and morphometric techniques, it is possible to access the differential morphology along the M. olfersii males, as well as confirm a life history trait found in several Macrobrachium species.

ABSTRACT

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection is one of the most challenging re-emergent diseases caused by a virus, and with no specific antiviral treatment it has now become a major public health concern. In this investigation, 25 blood samples were collected from patients with characteristic CHIKV symptoms and submitted to a virus isolation protocol, which detected 3 CHIKV isolates. These samples were evaluated by sequencing for the characterization of the strains and any homology to viruses circulating in Brazil during a recent outbreak. These viruses were used for the development of antiviral assays. Subsequently, the inhibitory effects of seaweed extracts on CHIKV replication were studied. The marine species of algae tested were Bryothamnion triquetrum, Caulerpa racemosa, Laurencia dendroidea, Osmundaria obtusiloba, Ulva fasciata, and Kappaphycus alvarezii, all of which are found in different countries including Brazil. The results revealed high levels of CHIKV inhibition, including extracts of O. obtusiloba with inhibition values of 1.25 µg/mL and a selectivity index of 420. Viral inhibition was dependent on the time of addition of extract of O. obtusiloba to the infected cells, with the optimal inhibition occurring up to 16 h after infection. Neuron evaluations with O. obtusiloba were performed and demonstrated low toxicity, and in infected neurons we observed high inhibitory activity in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicate that the algal extracts may be promising novel candidates for the development of therapeutic agents against CHIKV infections.

ABSTRACT

Ascorbate, the reduced form of vitamin C, is highly concentrated in the central nervous system (CNS), including the retina, where it plays important physiological functions. In the CNS, the plasma membrane transporter sodium vitamin C co-transporter 2 (SVCT2) is responsible for ascorbate transport in neurons. The neurotransmitter dopamine (DA), acting through D1- and D2-like receptor subfamilies and classically coupled to adenylyl cyclase, is known to modulate synaptic transmission in the retina. Here, we reveal that DA controls the release of ascorbate from retinal neurons. Using primary retinal cultures, we show that this DA effect is dose-dependent, occurring by the reversal of the SVCT2, and could be elicited by brief and repetitive pulses of DA. The DA effect in inducing ascorbate release occurs by the activation of D1R and is independent of PKA. Moreover, the exchange protein directly activated by cAMP type 2 (EPAC2) is present in retinal neurons and its specific knockdown using shRNAs abrogates the D1R-induced ascorbate release. Confirming the physiological relevance of this pathway, activation of D1R or EPAC2 also triggered ascorbate release ex vivo in acute preparations of the intact retina. Overall, DA plays pivotal roles in regulating ascorbate homeostasis through an unanticipated signaling pathway involving D1R/adenylyl cyclase/cAMP/EPAC2, thereby suggesting that vitamin C might fine-tune dopaminergic neurotransmission in the retina.

ABSTRACT

The present work describes more than 60 natural products from marine red seaweeds (Rhodophyta) and their antioxidant activities. The results indicate that algae belonging to the order Ceramiales, family Rhodomelaceae are the most promising as potential producers of antioxidants. This activity seems to be related to the ability to synthesize polyphenols and their derivatives, as bromophenols.
