ABSTRACT

We present the inscription of narrow-linewidth fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) into different types of multicore fibers (MCFs) using ultrashort laser pulses and the phase mask technique, which can act as notch filters. Such filters are required, e.g., to suppress light emitted by hydroxyl in the Earth's upper atmosphere, which disturbs ground-based observation of extraterrestrial objects in the near infrared. However, the inscription into a commercially available seven-core fiber showed a quite large core-to-core deviation of the resonance wavelength of up to 0.45 nm. Two options are presented to overcome this: first, we present the photo-treatment of the FBGs to tune the resonance wavelength, which allows for sufficient resonance shifts. Second, adapted MCFs containing 12 cores, arranged on a circle, are fabricated. For this, two different fabrication procedures were investigated, namely, the mechanical drilling of the preform for a rod-in-tube version as well as a stack-and-draw approach. Both adapted MCFs yielded significant improvements with core-to-core wavelength variations of the FBGs of only about 0.18 nm and 0.11 nm, respectively, sufficient to fulfill the requirements for astronomical filter applications as discussed above.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we present numerical and experimental results revealing that the mode instability threshold of highly Yb-doped, Ce/Al co-doped pedestal fibers is affected by the size of the index-increased pedestal structure surrounding the core. An alternative preparation technology for the realization of large mode area fibers with very large Al-doped silica pedestals is introduced. Three different pedestal fiber design iterations characterized by low photodarkening were manufactured and tested in counter-pumped amplifier setups. Up to 1.9 kW continuous-wave output power of near-diffraction-limited beam quality (M2 = 1.26) was achieved with an 18/200/420 µm fiber of very low NA = 0.042, limited only by the occurrence of mode instabilities.

ABSTRACT

We investigate the average power scaling of two diode-pumped Yb-doped fiber amplifiers emitting a diffraction-limited beam. The first fiber under investigation with a core diameter of 30 µm was able to amplify a 10 W narrow linewidth seed laser up to 2.8 kW average output power before the onset of transverse mode instabilities (TMI). A further power scaling was achieved using a second fiber with a smaller core size (23µm), which allowed for a narrow linewidth output power of 3.5 kW limited by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). We mitigated SBS using a spectral broadening mechanism, which allowed us to further increase the output power to 4.3 kW only limited by the available pump power. Up to this power level, a high slope efficiency of 90% with diffraction-limited beam quality and without any sign of TMI or stimulated Raman scattering for a spectral dynamic range of higher than -80 dB was obtained.

ABSTRACT

We present modal content measurements (S2) of two different negative curvature hollow-core photonic crystal fibers: a kagome fiber and an ice cream cone fiber. Their sensitivity towards mode matching, bending and polarization is analyzed. For the kagome fiber, a higher order mode suppression of 17dB under optimal conditions was achieved, and for the ice cream cone fiber there was a suppression of up to 42dB. Polarization turned out to be a critical parameter for good higher order mode suppression in both fibers.

ABSTRACT

We report on a newly designed and fabricated ytterbium-doped large mode area fiber with an extremely low NA (~0.04) and related systematic investigations on fiber parameters that crucially influence the mode instability threshold. The fiber is used to demonstrate a narrow linewidth, continuous wave, single mode fiber laser amplifier emitting a maximum output power of 3 kW at a wavelength of 1070 nm without reaching the mode-instability threshold. A high slope efficiency of 90 %, excellent beam quality, high temporal stability, and an ASE suppression of 70 dB could be reached with a signal linewidth of only 170 pm.

ABSTRACT

A 19-cell hollow-core photonic crystal fiber reaching 1.8±0.5 dB/km loss at 1530 nm is reported. Despite expanded corner holes in the first ring adjacent to the core, and only five cladding rings, the minimum loss is close to the previously published record of 1.7 dB/km at a comparable wavelength, achieved in a fiber with seven cladding rings. Since each additional cladding ring requires a significant increase in fabrication time and complexity, it is highly desirable to use as few as possible while still achieving low loss. Modeling results confirm that further reducing cladding deformations would yield only a small decrease in loss. This demonstrates that loss comparable to the previously demonstrated lowest-loss bandgap fibers can be achieved with fiber structures that are significantly simpler and faster to fabricate.

ABSTRACT

By using a gas-filled kagome-style photonic crystal fiber, nonlinear fiber optics is studied in the regime of optically induced ionization. The fiber offers low anomalous dispersion over a broad bandwidth and low loss. Sequences of blueshifted pulses are emitted when 65 fs, few-microjoule pulses, corresponding to high-order solitons, are launched into the fiber and undergo self-compression. The experimental results are confirmed by numerical simulations which suggest that free-electron densities of ∼10(17) cm(-3) are achieved at peak intensities of 10(14) W/cm(2) over length scales of several centimeters.

ABSTRACT

We numerically investigate the effect of ionization on ultrashort high-energy pulses propagating in gas-filled kagomé-lattice hollow-core photonic crystal fibers by solving an established uni-directional field equation. We consider the dynamics of two distinct regimes: ionization induced blue-shift and resonant dispersive wave emission in the deep-UV. We illustrate how the system evolves between these regimes and the changing influence of ionization. Finally, we consider the effect of higher ionization stages.

ABSTRACT

We report on the spectral broadening of ~1 µJ 30 fs pulses propagating in an Ar-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber. In contrast with supercontinuum generation in a solid-core photonic crystal fiber, the absence of Raman and unique pressure-controlled dispersion results in efficient emission of dispersive waves in the deep-UV region. The UV light emerges in the single-lobed fundamental mode and is tunable from 200 to 320 nm by varying the pulse energy and gas pressure. The setup is extremely simple, involving <1 m of a gas-filled photonic crystal fiber, and the UV signal is stable and bright, with experimental IR to deep-UV conversion efficiencies as high as 8%. The source is of immediate interest in applications demanding high spatial coherence, such as laser lithography or confocal microscopy.

ABSTRACT

We report tunable third-harmonic generation (THG) in an Ar-filled hollow-core photonic crystal fiber, pumped by broadband <2 microJ, 30 fs pulses from an amplified Ti:sapphire laser system. The overall dispersion is precisely controlled by balancing the negative dielectric susceptibility of the waveguide against the positive susceptibility of the gas. We demonstrate THG to a higher-order guided mode and show that the phase-matched UV wavelength is tunable by adjusting the gas pressure.

ABSTRACT

The potential of hollow core photonic crystal fiber as a nonlinear gas cell for efficient high harmonic generation is discussed. The feasibility of phase-matching this process by modulating the phase of ionization electrons using a counter-propagating laser field is shown. In this way, harmonics with energies of several hundreds of eV can be produced using fs-laser pump pulses of microJ energy.

ABSTRACT

We present a versatile method for selective mode coupling into higher-order modes of photonic crystal fibers, using holograms electronically generated by a spatial light modulator. The method enables non-mechanical and completely repeatable changes in the coupling conditions. We have excited higher order modes up to LP(31) in hollow-core photonic crystal fibers. The reproducibility of the coupling allows direct comparison of the losses of different guided modes in both hollow-core bandgap and kagome-lattice photonic crystal fibers. Our results are also relevant to applications in which the intensity distribution of the light inside the fiber is important, such as particle- or atom-guidance.

ABSTRACT

2-Cyclohexene-1-one (CHX) is a cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated ketone with broad human exposure. CHX is an environmental pollutant and is present in tobacco smoke and in soft drinks sweetened with cyclamate. Interest in the toxicity of this class of compounds is due to their structural similarity to the cytotoxin acrolein. In a pilot study, rats and mice were exposed to 0, 20, 40, or 80 ppm CHX for 6 h/day. The study was terminated after 4 days due to acute toxicity in the high-dose groups. In a subsequent 14-day study, mice and rats were exposed to 0, 2.5, 5, or 10 ppm CHX for 6 h/day. All animals survived exposure until terminal sacrifice. Body weights were not significantly different from controls after 14 days of exposure. Liver/body weights were increased in male and female mice exposed to 5 and 10 ppm, and in male and female rats exposed to 10 ppm CHX. Ninety-day toxicity studies were conducted to provide data required to design chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity studies of CHX if it is determined such studies are necessary. Groups of 10 male and female F-344 rats and B6C3F1 mice were exposed to 0, 2.5, 5, or 10 ppm CHX for 6 h/day for 13 wk. All animals survived until sacrifice. Body weights were not significantly different from controls after 13 wk of exposure. Liver weights were increased in male and female mice exposed to 5 and 10 ppm and in male and female rats exposed to 10 ppm CHX. No adverse effects on bone-marrow micronuclei, sperm motility, or vaginal cytology were observed. Microscopic lesions included hyperplasia, and squamous metaplasia in the nasal cavity in rats and mice of both sexes at all doses. Nasal-cavity erosion and suppurative inflammation also occurred in high-dose mice. Larynx and lung were not affected in either sex or species. Dose-related hepatic centrilobular cytoplasmic vacuolation was seen in male rats only. These data suggest that CHX acts as an alkylating agent primarily producing toxicity at the exposure site.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To determine the immunogenicity and safety of heptavalent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (serotypes 4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F) conjugated to CRM(197) (7-valent conjugate pneumococcal vaccine [7VPnC]) among infants with sickle cell disease (SCD) and a comparison group of infants without SCD (non-SCD). DESIGN: Two cohorts of infants were enrolled and received open-label doses of 7VPnC vaccine; infants enrolled before 2 months of age received 7VPnC vaccine at 2, 4, and 6 months of age followed by 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PS-23) at 24 months of age for those infants with SCD (schedule A), and infants enrolled between 2 and 12 months of age received 7VPnC at 12 months of age followed by PS-23 at 24 months of age for infants with SCD (schedule B). Safety data were collected for 3 days after each dose of vaccine. Antibody concentrations were measured to each of the 7VPnC serotypes by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay before each vaccine dose and 1 month after the last 7VPnC dose and the PS-23 vaccine dose. RESULTS: Forty-five infants (34 SCD and 11 non-SCD) were vaccinated according to schedule A and 16 infants (13 SCD and 3 non-SCD) according to schedule B. The 7VPnC vaccine was highly immunogenic for all serotypes among infants with and without SCD who received 3 doses of vaccine according to schedule A: depending on serotype, 89% to 100% achieved antibody concentrations above.15 microg/mL and 56% to 100% achieved antibody concentrations above 1.0 microg/mL. Among infants immunized according to schedule B, a single dose of 7VPnC vaccine resulted in antibody concentrations above.15 microg/mL in 53% to 92% by serotype and above 1.0 microg/mL in 31% to 71% by serotype. A single dose of PS-23 resulted in dramatic increases in the antibody concentrations to all serotypes regardless of 1- or 3-dose priming. There was no difference in the reactogenicity of the 7VPnC vaccine between those with and without SCD. There were no serious reactions to the 7VPnC or PS-23 vaccines, even among those with high antibody concentrations before immunization. CONCLUSIONS: Infants with SCD respond to 7VPnC vaccine with antibody concentrations that are at least as high as infants without SCD. Infants immunized with 7VPnC vaccine at 2, 4, and 6 months of age developed antibody concentrations in the same range as those achieved among infants without SCD enrolled in a large trial that demonstrated vaccine efficacy against invasive disease. Significant rises were seen in antibody concentrations to all 7VPnC serotypes after the PS-23 booster in children receiving schedule A or B.

ABSTRACT

Health care providers are exposed early in their education to the pathological classifications of cervical neoplasia. The significance of this early education may at first be hard for some to grasp. However, as one delves more deeply into the history of cervical cancer, the natural progression of early lesions, and the tremendous advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer in the past fifty years, the importance of this early education is very apparent. With the widespread use of The Bethesda System of lesion classification, the introduction of the ThinPrep pap smear and HPV DNA typing, and ever evolving therapeutic techniques, it seems timely to review the history, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cervical neoplasia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the use of intravenous theophylline, in the form of aminophylline, when added to systemic corticosteroids and aerosolized beta 2-agonists, enhances the improvement of children with acute asthma exacerbations. DESIGN: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, clinical trial. SETTING: The University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, an urban primary- and tertiary-care pediatric medical center. PATIENTS: Forty-two children, aged 2 to 18 years, admitted to the hospital for acute exacerbations of asthma. METHODS: Patients were randomized to receive either intravenous theophylline to maintain a serum level greater than 55 mumol/L or a placebo infusion. All patients received methylprednisolone and nebulized albuterol. A clinical severity score was assessed twice daily. RESULTS: The mean length of stay for the treatment and control groups was 52.3 +/- 32.3 hours and 48.2 +/- 26.6 hours, respectively (t = 0.45, P = .65). The rate of improvement of clinical scores was similar. CONCLUSION: These data suggest that the addition of theophylline to albuterol and corticosteroids does not enhance improvement of children admitted to the hospital with asthma.

ABSTRACT

Radiation with doses > 7.5 Gy damages the canine intestinal mucosa, and pretreatment with WR2721 reduces this damage. However, the effects of radiation and of WR2721 on in vivo intestinal transport are unclear. Therefore, we determined canine survival, intestinal transport, and mucosal histology following unilateral abdominal irradiation. Isoperistaltic ileostomies were prepared in 23 dogs under general anesthesia and aseptic conditions. After a three-week recovery period, animals were given either placebo or WR2721, 150 mg/kg intravenously, 30 min prior to 10 Gy cobalt-60 abdominal irradiation. Ileal transport and histology were determined in both groups before exposure and one, four, and seven days after irradiation. Seven-day survival was significantly improved by pretreatment with WR2721 (91% vs 33%, P < 0.02). On day 4, both mucosal integrity and net intestinal absorption were significantly better (P < 0.05) after WR2721 than after placebo. Thus, radiation-induced damage to the ileal mucosa is accompanied by a reduction in net ileal absorption of water and electrolytes in vivo. In addition, pretreatment with WR2721 improves animal survival while reducing ileal damage and improving intestinal absorption.
