ABSTRACT

The patient, a 33-year-old female, presented to her local doctor with lower abdominal pain. She was referred to our hospital for a plain CT scan, which revealed signs of ileitis. Because acute appendicitis could not be ruled out, the patient was hospitalized. On the third day of hospitalization, she underwent laparoscopic appendicectomy for perforated appendicitis. However, the inflammatory response persisted despite continued antibacterial treatment; we diagnosed this to be due to the formation of a postoperative residual abscess. Since drainage of the abscess was deemed necessary, the patient underwent EUS-guided transrectal drainage on the 26th day of hospitalization. The patient had a favorable postoperative course and was discharged on the 31st day of hospitalization. Along with some literature review, this report details a case in which transrectal drainage under ultrasound endoscopy was effective in treating a pelvic abscess. We report a case of a pelvic abscess that was drained through the rectum under EUS guidance and an internal and external fistula tube was placed. The abscess resolved without complications.

ABSTRACT

Dental caries is a widespread oral health issue in Asia, affecting an estimated 30% to 90% of children and adults. Many caries cases remain untreated, resulting in pain and infection. In response, the Asian Academy of Preventive Dentistry (AAPD) emphasises comprehensive caries management and organised a fluoride workshop at the 15th International Conference of the AAPD in 2023. The AAPD invited a group of experts to form a fluoride working group to review existing literature and develop fluoride recommendations for stakeholders across Asian countries and regions. The working group assessed caries risk and identified commonly used topical fluoride products for home care, professional, and community settings in Asia. The working group concluded that fluoride is a safe and highly effective strategy to reduce caries prevalence and incidence. The working group provided key recommendations based on successful regional caries management practices: (1) use topical fluoride for prevention and control of dental caries; (2) encourage the use of fluoride toothpaste with a concentration of at least 1,000 ppm for effective caries reduction; (3) advise a 0.05% fluoride mouth rinse as soon as children can spit it out to prevent early childhood caries; (4) deliver professionally administered fluoride, such as 5% sodium fluoride varnish, 2% fluoride gel, or 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride preparations, to decrease dental caries in at-risk individuals; and (5) apply 38% silver diamine fluoride to arrest cavitated caries. These recommendations aim to help practitioners, health care providers, and parents/caregivers make informed decisions about fluoride use as part of comprehensive oral health care in the region.

Helmeted guinea fowl are social animals and only males form a hierarchy in the wild. Non-cage husbandry systems benefit the reproductive health of guinea fowl; however, there are concerns that the feeding duration of subordinate individuals is insufficient. Here, the pecking orders formed during small-scale floor feeding were investigated. There were three experimental categories: male-only (four males), female-only (four females), and mixed category (two males, two females). Each experimental category was set up three times and included different individuals. Behaviors were recorded for 130 h 52 min, 89 h 11 min, and 98 h 46 min in the male, female, and mixed categories, respectively. Male helmeted guinea fowls pecked other males, whereas females exhibited little pecking behavior. Male pecking behavior was not homogeneous within each experimental group. It has been suggested that males form a pecking order, whereas females have no hierarchy under small-scale floor-feeding conditions, as observed in the wild. In most cases, on the first day the number of pecking behaviors was low 20 min after the start of the experiment. The three subordinate individuals in the mixed category had little time to feed, whereas the other birds in the mixed category and all helmeted guinea fowl in the male- and female-only categories had longer feeding durations. We suggest that helmeted guinea fowl may be reared under small-scale floor feeding, and that the health of males should be managed. However, rearing females and males under small-scale floor feeding conditions should be avoided. This study contributes to improving the welfare of helmeted guinea fowl reared under small-scale floor feeding.

ABSTRACT

This study describes the prototype of a novel ultra-sensitive time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TRFIA) for the quantification of lead (Pb) in plasma. The assay procedures were conducted in 96-microwell plates and involved the competitive binding format. The assay used a mouse monoclonal antibody, designated as 2C33, that specifically recognized the diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid chelate of Pb (Pb-DTPA) but did not recognize Pb-free DTPA chelator. The antigen used for coating onto the inner surfaces of assay plate microwells was Pb-DTPA conjugated with bovine serum albumin protein (Pb-DTPA-BSA). The competitive binding reaction occurred between Pb-DTPA chelates, formed in the sample solutions by treating the samples with an excess DTPA, and the coated Pb-DTPA-BSA for a limited quantity of 2C33 antibody binding sites. The antigen-antibody complex formed in the plate wells was quantified by a europium-DTPA-labeled secondary antibody and a fluorescence enhancement solution. The conditions of the assay were refined, and its optimum procedures were established. The TRFIA was validated following the immunoassay validation guidelines, and all of the validation criteria were acceptable. The working range of the assay was 20-300 pg mL-1 and its limit of quantitation was 20 pg mL-1. Metals that are commonly encountered in blood plasma did not interfere with Pb in the analysis by the proposed TRFIA. The assay was applied to the quantitation of Pb in plasma samples with satisfactory accuracy and precision. The results were compared favorably with those obtained by atomic emission spectroscopy. In conclusion, the present study represents the first TRFIA for the quantitation of Pb in plasma. The assay is superior to the existing atomic spectrometric methods and other immunoassays for Pb in terms of sensitivity, convenience, and analysis throughputs. The proposed TRFIA is anticipated to effectively contribute to assessing Pb concentrations and controlling the exposure of humans to its potential toxicity.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this article is to discuss the importance of oral health in achieving healthy ageing and the role of all stakeholders in improving oral health for older adults. The World Health Organization defined healthy ageing as the process of developing and maintaining the functional ability that enables well-being in older age. It recognized healthy ageing as an important goal and the key to turn population ageing from a challenge to an opportunity. Healthy ageing has positive impacts on individual older adults, their families and societies. It enhances quality of life of older adults, strengthen family bonding of families and reduce resource demand of the societies. Maintaining oral health and function is essential in healthy ageing. Oral health affects systemic health, cognitive health and psychological health. Oral functions such as eating ensure nutritional health in older adults. Most oral diseases are preventable and oral function decline can be recovered by intervention. Unfortunately, oral diseases remain prevalent and oral function decline is being neglected in older adults. Policy makers, national dental associations, academics and healthcare professionals should collaborate to provide a patient-centred, comprehensive and integrated care to older adults. Health policy reforms are needed to reduce the global oral health inequalities in older adults. Population-wide prevention should be accessible, affordable and available to older adults. Universal oral health coverage is crucial for integration of oral health into general health care.

ABSTRACT

Silicon carbide fibers have superior flexural properties and chemical stability compared to glass fibers. We investigated the flexural strength and modulus of an experimental, short silicon carbide fiber-reinforced resin. Short silicon carbide fibers with lengths of ~0.5, 1, 2, and 3 mm were prepared and silanized. Urethane dimethacrylate and triethylene glycol dimethacrylate were mixed at a 70:30 wt% ratio and used as the matrix resins. Each length of short silicon carbide fibers and the matrix resin were combined using a mixing machine and then used for specimen preparation. The three-point bending test conditions were in accordance with ISO 4049:2009. The fracture surfaces of the specimens after the three-point bending test were observed using secondary electron images. The data were statistically analyzed with a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). The flexural strength and modulus of the specimens containing 2 mm or 3 mm silicon carbide fibers were significantly higher than the other specimens. The river pattern was observed more clearly in specimens containing shorter silicon carbide fibers, although this pattern was observed in all specimens.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: While research has explored the risk of periodontal disease in various eye conditions, the link between dry eye and periodontal disease remains underexplored, especially in Japanese adults. This study aims to investigate the association between dry eye and periodontal disease in community-dwelling Japanese adults. METHODS: This study is a subset of the Uonuma cohort study, which includes Japanese adults aged 40 years and older residing in the Uonuma area of Niigata Prefecture, Japan. Participants completed a self-administered, paper-based questionnaire. Statistical analyses, including the chi-square test, independent t test, ANOVA test, and logistic regressions, were employed to assess the association of periodontal disease with independent variables. RESULTS: Among 36,488 participants (average age 63.3 years, 47.4% men), 39.3% had a history of periodontal disease, and gender differences were statistically significant (p < 0.001). Significant associations were found between periodontal disease and dry eye diagnosis or symptoms. Univariable logistic regression revealed links between periodontal disease and age, gender, living status, alcohol consumption, remaining teeth, bite molar availability, and history of dry eye disease or symptoms. Multiple-adjusted regression found that doctor-diagnosed dry eye was associated with a higher likelihood of periodontal disease (odds ratio, 1.12; 95% confidence interval, 1.03-1.22). Participants who never experienced dryness or foreign body sensation had lower ORs of periodontal disease than those who always experienced such symptoms across all models. CONCLUSION: A significant correlation was found between dry eye and periodontal disease in Japanese adults. Regular check-ups, early detection, and effective management of both conditions are strongly recommended.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The authors perform thorough, noninvasive presurgical evaluations for intractable epilepsy at their center and avoid unnecessary intracranial EEG when possible. The purpose of this study was to clarify the appropriateness of their lesion-oriented surgical strategy for localized focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II. METHODS: Fifty-one patients with pathologically proven localized FCD type II who were followed for at least 1 year after surgery were included. Patients with FCD type II with lobar or multilobar distribution were excluded. The results of presurgical evaluations, including thin-slice 3-T MRI, FDG-PET, and ictal SPECT, as well as surgical procedures and postoperative seizure and functional outcomes, were examined retrospectively. RESULTS: MRI was positive in 46 (90%) of 51 patients, and FDG-PET revealed localized hypo- or hypermetabolism in 47 (92%) of 51 patients. Ictal SPECT revealed concordant hyperperfusion in 37 of 42 patients examined. Intracranial EEG was used in only 13 patients (25%), including 5 with negative MRI results and 4 with subtle MRI findings. Of the 15 patients with FCD in the vicinity of eloquent (sensorimotor and language) areas, intracranial EEG was used in 4. Lesionectomy was performed in all 51 patients. Intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) was performed in 8 patients, but the findings were not used to tailor the extent of resection. Postoperative seizure outcomes were Engel class I in 47 patients (92%) and Ia in 45 (88%). In the 15 patients with FCD in the vicinity of eloquent areas, 13 (87%) achieved a class I outcome. Predictive factors for favorable seizure outcome were complete resection of the MRI lesion (p = 0.006) and frontal lobe surgery (p = 0.012). Postoperative neurological deficits were noted in only 4 (27%) of 15 patients with FCD in the vicinity of eloquent areas. All 5 MRI-negative patients achieved an Engel class I outcome. CONCLUSIONS: In most of the patients with localized FCD type II, MRI and/or FDG-PET detected the localized abnormality. Lesionectomy without intracranial EEG led to seizure freedom in most cases. Even when lesions were in the vicinity of eloquent areas, seizure and functional outcomes were favorable. Intraoperative ECoG may thus be unnecessary. Complete resection of the lesion is essential for favorable seizure outcome in MRI-positive patients. In MRI-negative patients, surgery with intracranial EEG guided by FDG-PET provided seizure-free outcomes.

Fas-associated factor 1 (FAF1) is a death-promoting protein identified as an interaction partner of the death receptor Fas. The downregulation and mutation of FAF1 have been reported in a variety of human tumors, but there have been few studies on lung cancer. Here, we investigated the prognostic significance of FAF1 expression in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and whether aberrant FAF1 expression may be involved in the pathogenesis and prognosis of NSCLC. FAF1 expression was examined in NSCLC specimens as well as human lung cancer cell lines. In addition, changes in cell viability and apoptosis upon regulating FAF1 expression were investigated in lung cancer cell lines. As a result, high FAF1 expression was significantly associated with a poor prognosis in NSCLC. In lung cancer cell lines, FAF1 downregulation hindered cell viability and tended to promote early apoptosis. In conclusion, this is the first study of the clinical significance of FAF1 in NSCLC, showing that FAF1 overexpression is associated with a poor prognosis in NSCLC and that FAF1 acts as a dangerous factor rather than an apoptosis promoter in NSCLC.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between plasma antibody levels against Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG) and atrial fibrillation (AF) history in community-dwelling older individuals in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a subset of the Uonuma cohort study, including 3091 participants aged 60-79 years. Data were collected, including AF history as a dependent variable, plasma immunoglobulin G antibody levels against PG as an independent variable, and previously reported AF risk factors and demographic information as covariates. RESULTS: The median age of the participants was 69 years. Of the 3091 participants, 1411 (45.6%) were men, and 56 (1.8%) had an AF history. AF prevalence was significantly higher in participants with higher antibody levels against PG than in those with lower antibody levels (3.0% vs 1.4%; p = 0.005). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that participants with higher antibody levels against PG had twofold higher odds of having AF (odds ratio = 2.13; 95% confidence interval = 1.23-3.69). Restricted cubic spline analysis indicated a nonlinear relationship between antibody levels against PG and AF history. CONCLUSION: Plasma antibody levels against PG were associated with AF history in community-dwelling older individuals in Japan.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effects of socioeconomic, behavioral, and psychological factors on oral health status and oral health-related quality of life in Myanmar adults. METHODS: Data were from a convenience sample of Myanmar adults who are from a township health center in Yangon city. Face-to-face interviews using a paper-based questionnaire in the Myanmar language and clinical oral examinations were performed at the health center. Mann-Whitney U test and linear regressions were used to assess the association of socio-demographic, behavioral, and psychological variables with oral health outcomes. RESULTS: In socio-demographic variables, significant associations were observed in individual income with periodontal pocket and OHIP-14, and history of COVID-19 infection with OHIP-14. However, there were no associations between behavioral factors and oral health outcomes. After adjustment for sex, age, educational level, and individual income, the depression subscale was statistically significant with the number of present teeth, decayed teeth, decayed, missing, and filled teeth, and OHIP-14. The anxiety subscale remained significant with periodontal pocket, but no stress subscale was associated with oral health outcomes. CONCLUSION: The experiences of oral health status were high, and the oral health-related quality of life was unfavorable in Myanmar adults. A large proportion of them suffers from psychological distress. Additionally, individuals with lower income and who experienced a history of COVID-19 infection were susceptible to poor oral health-related quality of life. Psychological distress indicates a higher risk for oral health problems in Myanmar adults.

ABSTRACT

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Yangon City in 2016-2017 to investigate the association between their caries experience and maternal factors. Children's oral examination and questionnaire surveys to their mothers were conducted. Children's caries prevalence was 82.9% with mean dmft of 6.4 ± 4.9. Mean oral health knowledge score of their mothers was 8.5 ± 2.8. Mother's educational level and oral health knowledge were significant predictors of childhood caries. Third- or later-born children were twice more likely to have dental caries than first-born children (P = .022). Mother's regular dental check-up resulted in significantly lower odds ratios for caries development in her child. Children's caries experience was high and mother's oral health knowledge regarding the importance of primary teeth was unsatisfactory. It is, therefore, necessary to improve awareness and attentiveness for prevention of childhood caries among parents and guardians in Myanmar.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the dental caries status of indicator age groups as mentioned in the WHO pathfinder methodology, compare caries experiences among those age groups according to gender and geographical location, and assess the association between dental caries and related risk factors in primary and permanent dentition. METHODS: A sample of 5928 participants aged 6, 12, 15-18, 35-44 and 60-74 years were recruited from 21 selected townships in the first Myanmar national oral health survey. Clinical oral examinations and questionnaire-based surveys were conducted from December 2016 to January 2017. RESULTS: The prevalence of dental caries in primary teeth was 85.3% with a mean dmft of 5.7 at age 6 years. The prevalence of dental caries in permanent teeth and mean DMFT were 36.5% and 0.8 at 12 years, 43.8% and 1.1 at 15-18 years, 64.7% and 3.0 at 35-44 years, and 93.6% and 11.5 at 60-74 years. Missing teeth were higher in 60-74-year-olds, with 27 participants being fully edentulous. There were significant differences in caries experiences between males and females aged 15-18, 35-44 and 60-74 years. In the adjusted logistic regression, consumption of sweets or candies three times or more a day showed significantly higher risks of dental caries in primary teeth. Age, gender, consumption of sweets or candies and consumption of sweet drinks were associated factors for dental caries in permanent teeth. CONCLUSION: The findings from the first national oral health survey indicate that caries in primary teeth is an important oral health problem for Myanmar children. Tooth loss was also found to be a concern in the aging population. National oral health policies and strategies need to be developed to promote awareness and understanding of oral health, in particular the role of risk factors such as sugary foods and drinks in tooth decay in children and adults.

Abstract Introduction The associations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) with reduced saliva flow rates have not been previously reported. Objective The present study aimed to assess the association of cholesterolemia with reduced saliva flow rates in community-dwelling elderly subjects. Methods The present study analyzed 342 participants (170 males and 172 females aged between 78 and 79 years old). Unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR) was assessed using a cotton roll method. Low-USFR was defined as 0.10 g/30 seconds. Stimulated salivary flow rate (SSFR) was assessed by having the participants chew tasteless gum for 3minutes. Low-SSFR was defined as 1.0 mL/minute. Blood samples were collected for the measurement of LDL-C, HDL-C, rheumatoid factor, hemoglobin A1c, and creatinine. To assess depression, the General Health Questionnaire 30 was used. A standardized questionnaire was completed, covering the current and previous medications of the participants and smoking status. We stratified the serum LDL-C levels of the participants as normal, moderate or severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia and serum HDL-C levels as normal or hypo-HDL cholesterolemia. Multivariate logistic regression models were established and low-USFR or low-SSFR were set as dependent variables in the aforementioned models. Results After controlling for the effects of the other variables, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for low-USFR were 2.25 (1.10-4.61) for moderate and 5.69 (1.55-20.8) for severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia, while that of hypo-HDL cholesterolemia was 3.40 (1.33-8.69). Severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia was also associated with low-SSFR with an OR of 3.89 (1.39-10.88). Conclusion Elderly patients with cholesterolemia have a risk of reduced salivary flow rate.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are a possible source of thermogenic dissolved black carbon (DBC), which is a component of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon, but little is known about the distribution of hydrothermal DBC in the deep ocean. Here, we show basin-scale distributions of DBC along two transects in the eastern Pacific Ocean, which are located outside the jet-like hydrothermal plumes from the East Pacific Rise. The DBC concentration in the deep waters did not show a strong linear relationship with apparent oxygen utilization (AOU), as previously observed in the central and western Pacific Ocean. Deviations in DBC concentration from the DBC-AOU relationship observed in the central and western Pacific Ocean were quantified. The deviation was linearly correlated with excess 3He, a tracer for hydrothermal input, indicating that a fraction of the DBC in the deep ocean is transported long distances from hydrothermal systems.

BACKGROUND: Solid-papillary carcinoma (SPC) of the breast is a rare variant of low-grade in situ and invasive carcinoma but there are only a few of the cytologic studies. METHODS: We examined 44 cases of SPC of the breast to define the cytologic features. We also made a systemic review of reported cases of SPC and neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the breast. RESULTS: Both of our and the reviewed cases with SPC were very similar in the cytologic finding. It included hypercellularity, highly discohesive clusters, numerous isolated cells, small nuclei, finely granular chromatin of salt-and-pepper appearance, inconspicuous nucleoli, low nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, and a plasmacytoid appearance. Moreover, SPC and NET had frequently all of these features in common. Capillary vessels structures and mucinous substance were not frequently seen in our and the reviewed cases with SPC. Rosette and pseudorosette were very rare in the cytologic specimen. The immunocytochemistry with our 9 cases with SPC indicated diffuse positivity for chromogranin A and/or synaptophysin. CONCLUSION: Many cytologic features are frequently shared by SPC and NET of the breast. However, the vascular structure may not be a precise criterion for SPC. Rosette and pseudorosette are rarely helpful for the cytologic diagnosis.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: The aim of this study is to review the benefits of the 8020 Campaign since its inception. (2) Methods: We followed the PRISMA guideline and collected information regarding the 8020 Campaign through online database searches. (3) Results: Twenty-five studies met the inclusion criteria and were eligible for analysis. The main outcomes of the 25 included studies were reviewed. The quality evaluation demonstrated a range of studies showing a credible relationship between masticatory function, number of teeth, salivary secretion, frequent dental check-ups, and general health concerns. Due to the risk of bias, publication bias, and indirectness, 22 studies were considered that only had "fair" quality. (4) Conclusions: The 8020 Foundation funded several of the studies, and other research papers noted the 8020 Campaign in their papers, however there were no clear explanations for any direct relationship between their findings and the 8020 Campaign. As a result, evidence for the direct effectiveness and benefits assessment of the 8020 Campaign positive outcomes were compromised by confounding social and economic variables over the 30-year period. To fully elucidate how improvement in Japan's oral health was directly related to the 8020 Campaign, a more informed and systematic explanation of the campaign's structure and activities is required.

ABSTRACT

Introduction The associations of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) with reduced saliva flow rates have not been previously reported. Objective The present study aimed to assess the association of cholesterolemia with reduced saliva flow rates in community-dwelling elderly subjects. Methods The present study analyzed 342 participants (170 males and 172 females aged between 78 and 79 years old). Unstimulated salivary flow rate (USFR) was assessed using a cotton roll method. Low-USFR was defined as 0.10 g/30 seconds. Stimulated salivary flow rate (SSFR) was assessed by having the participants chew tasteless gum for 3 minutes. Low-SSFR was defined as 1.0 mL/minute. Blood samples were collected for the measurement of LDL-C, HDL-C, rheumatoid factor, hemoglobin A1c, and creatinine. To assess depression, the General Health Questionnaire 30 was used. A standardized questionnaire was completed, covering the current and previous medications of the participants and smoking status. We stratified the serum LDL-C levels of the participants as normal, moderate or severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia and serum HDL-C levels as normal or hypo-HDL cholesterolemia. Multivariate logistic regression models were established and low-USFR or low-SSFR were set as dependent variables in the aforementioned models. Results After controlling for the effects of the other variables, the odds ratios (ORs) (95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for low-USFR were 2.25 (1.10-4.61) for moderate and 5.69 (1.55-20.8) for severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia, while that of hypo-HDL cholesterolemia was 3.40 (1.33-8.69). Severe hyper-LDL cholesterolemia was also associated with low-SSFR with an OR of 3.89 (1.39-10.88). Conclusion Elderly patients with cholesterolemia have a risk of reduced salivary flow rate.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Periictal water drinking (PIWD), which is a rare seizure-related autonomic behavior, has been reported in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) but only rarely in extra-TLE. Additionally, the lateralizing value of PIWD is controversial. We aimed to clarify the occurrence and lateralizing value of PIWD in patients with focal epilepsy. METHODS: This retrospective study included 240 focal epilepsy patients aged >10 years with a favorable postoperative seizure outcome (Engel class I). PIWD was defined as water drinking behavior during a seizure or within 2 min in the postictal phase. The occurrence of PIWD documented on video-electroencephalogram monitoring was assessed. The lateralizing value of PIWD was analyzed among patients whose language dominant hemisphere was identified. RESULTS: Twenty-three (9.5%) patients exhibited PIWD. PIWD occurred more frequently in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE; eight of 41 patients, 19.5%) than in TLE (15 of 188 patients, 8%). The occurrence of PIWD was significantly different between FLE and extra-FLE (P = 0.035), with a low positive predictive value (34.8%). In FLE with PIWD, all but one patient underwent resective surgery involving the medial frontal lobe. In 194 patients whose language dominant hemisphere was determined, the lateralizing value of PIWD in FLE and TLE showed no statistical significance (P = 0.69 and P = 0.27, respectively). SIGNIFICANCE: Periictal water drinking occurred more often in FLE than TLE. Thus, PIWD might not be a specific periictal symptom in TLE. There was no evidence for the lateralizing value of PIWD in FLE and TLE. These findings can provide useful clinical clues for preoperative evaluations to estimate the epileptogenic zone based on seizure semiology and allow for a better understanding of pathophysiological insights into PIWD.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the relationship between dentition, mastication, salivation and nutritional intake in 90-year-old Japanese people. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 84 participants (39 men and 45 women) aged 90 years. We used questionnaires to collect demographic information, smoking status, nutritional intake and higher-level functional capacity. Nutritional intake was assessed using the validated Brief-Type Self-Administered Diet History Questionnaire, and higher-level functional capacity was assessed using the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) questionnaire. Oral examinations, masticatory performance tests, stimulated salivary flow rate (SSF) tests, blood tests, blood pressure tests and body mass index (BMI) assessments were conducted. Univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Multivariable linear regression analyses adjusted for sex, education, TMIG-IC and BMI ≤20 kg/m2 showed that participants with masticatory performance <173 mg/dL had lower intake of folic acid and vitamin A than those with masticatory performance ≥173 mg/dL. SSF was positively associated with intake of vitamin A. The number of teeth was positively associated with the intake of ß-carotene. With smaller effect sizes, masticatory performance, SSF and number of teeth were also associated with the intake of various micronutrients and carbohydrates. CONCLUSION: Lower masticatory performance, lower SSF and fewer teeth were associated with a lower intake of several micronutrients, such as vitamin A, ß-carotene and folic acids, in Japanese individuals of advanced age. Oral health practitioners should pay careful attention to the nutritional intake of older people with poor mastication, dry mouth and severe tooth loss.
