ABSTRACT

Foods that contain antibiotic residues have potential adverse health effects on consumers and provide selective pressure for the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study's objective was to measure tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues in beef, eggs, and honey sold as "antibiotic-free" at farmers' markets in East Tennessee (East TN) in the United States (U.S.). Between July and September 2020, 36 "antibiotic-free" food products (9 beef, 18 egg, and 9 honey products) were purchased from East TN farmers' markets and tested for tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues using competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (cELISA). All beef, egg, and honey products had tetracycline residue; the median concentrations were 51.75, 30.25, and 77.86 µg/kg, respectively. Sulfonamide residue was present in every sample of beef. Of 18 eggs, 11 eggs had detectable sulfonamide residue; the median concentrations were 3.50 and 1.22 µg/kg in beef and eggs, respectively. Each sample of beef and honey contained erythromycin residue; the median concentrations were 3.67 and 0.68 µg/kg, respectively. Overall, the median concentrations of tetracycline, sulfonamide, and erythromycin residues were below the maximum residue levels (MRLs) set in the U.S. for beef and eggs. Thus, the beef and eggs sold as "antibiotic-free" in East TN farmers' markets can be considered safe for consumption. Safety determination for honey could not be made because MRLs have not been set for honey in the U.S. Because these residues should not be expected in "antibiotic-free" food products, it is important to further investigate the potential sources of these residues in these products.

ABSTRACT

Blackleg is a common cause of death in cattle, mostly caused by the bacterium Clostridium chauvoei. Cardiac lesions were traditionally considered uncommon in cases of blackleg in cattle until a 2018 study reported otherwise. This study was aimed at determining the prevalence of cardiac disease among cattle that died of blackleg in Tennessee, USA. The outcome of this study would reinforce the importance of assessing cardiac lesions in suspected cases of blackleg in cattle. The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center database searched for cattle with a confirmed diagnosis of blackleg necropsied between 2004 and 2018. Of the 120 necropsy reports, 37 had a diagnosis of blackleg. Histology slides of skeletal muscle (26/37) and the heart (26/37) were reviewed to confirm the presence of supportive lesions. Of the 37 cases of blackleg identified, 26 animals (70.3%) had cardiac lesions, including 4 (10.8%) that had only cardiac involvement without skeletal muscle lesions. Specifically, (5.4%; 2/37) had only necrotizing myocarditis; (13.5%; 5/37) had only fibrinous or fibrinosuppurative pericarditis, epicarditis, or endocarditis; (51.4%; 19/26) had a combination of myocarditis and pericarditis, epicarditis, or endocarditis; and (29.7%; 11/37) had no lesions. Furthermore, of the 26 cases with cardiac lesions, 24 cases had gross lesions, while 2 cases were identified only by microscopic examination. This indicates that gross examination alone is insufficient to identify cardiac involvement in blackleg cases in cattle. Contrary to traditional perceptions, cardiac lesions in cases of bovine blackleg could be as high as 70% and are most often associated with skeletal muscle lesions. The prevalence of cardiac lesions in cases of blackleg in cattle may be higher when the heart is examined microscopically than if it is only evaluated grossly. Pathologists should specifically evaluate the heart for lesions in suspected cases of blackleg in cattle and utilize microscopic examination when gross lesions are absent.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between meniscal lesions and severity of osteoarthritis (OA) among dogs that underwent Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) for stabilization of cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CrCLR) at the University of Tennessee in 2011-2017. RESULTS: There were a total of 252 meniscal tears. Factors associated with diagnosis of medial meniscal tears (MMT) in dogs were severe OA in comparison to no OA (3.8 OR, 2.0-8.0 95% CI, 0.001 p-value), sporting and mixed breed group compared to other breed (3.6 OR, 1.7-7.6 95% CI, 0.004 p-value; 3.2 OR, 1.6-6.6 95% CI, 0.019 p-value, respectively), increasing age (1.1 OR, 1.0-1.2 95% CI, 0.018 p-value), complete CrCLR compared to partial (3.3 OR, 2.1-5.0 95% CI, < 0.001 p-value), and arthrotomy compared to arthroscopy (2.2 OR, 1.4-3.1 95% CI, 0.002 p-value). The factors that did not have significance in predicting MMT were weight, sex, lameness period, and side affected.

ABSTRACT

With the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), like other institutions, restructured their services to reduce the potential spread of the COVID-19 virus while simultaneously providing critical and essential veterinary services. A mathematical model was developed to predict the change in the level of possible COVID-19 infections due to the increased number of potential contacts within the UTCVM hospital. A system of ordinary differential equations with different compartments for UTCVM individuals and the Knox county population was formulated to show the dynamics of transmission and the number of confirmed cases. Key transmission rates in the model were estimated using COVID-19 case data from the surrounding county and UTCVM personnel. Simulations from this model show the increasing number of COVID-19 cases among UTCVM personnel as the number of daily clients and the number of veterinary staff in the clinic are increased. We also investigate how changes within the Knox county community impact the UTCVM hospital. These scenarios show the importance of understanding the effects of re-opening scenarios in veterinary teaching hospitals.

ABSTRACT

The presence of antibiotic residues in the tissue of food animals is a growing concern due to the adverse health effects that they can cause in humans, such as antibiotic resistance bacteria. An inspector-generated sampling (IGS) dataset from the United States National Residue Surveillance Program, collected between 2014 and 2019, was analyzed to investigate the association of changes in the veterinary feed directive (VFD) regulations on the detection of violative penicillin, tetracycline, sulfonamide, desfuroylceftiofur, tilmicosin, and florfenicol, residues in the tissue of food animals. Multivariable logistic regression models were used for analysis. While the animal production class was significantly associated with residue violations for tetracycline, having a sample collection date after the implementation of change in VFD regulations was not. However, the odds of detecting violative sulfonamide and penicillin residues in the tissue of food animals following the implementation of the change in VFD regulations were 36% and 24% lower than those collected before the implementation of the change in VFD regulations period, respectively, irrespective of animal production class. Violative desfuroylceftiofur, tilmicosin, and florfenicol residues in the tissue of food animals were not significantly associated with the implementation of changes in the VFD regulations. Further investigation of the factors that influence the presence of violative antibiotic residues in the tissue of food animals following the change in VFD regulations would lend clarity to this critical issue.

ABSTRACT

To improve judicious antimicrobial use (AMU) in food animals in the United States, all feed additives that were medically important antimicrobials were moved from over the counter to Veterinary Feed Directive in 2017. This action required a change in behavior of producers' AMU practices. Because emotions are important aspects of behavior, several behavioral interventions have targeted people's emotions as means of effecting change. Hence, understanding and incorporating the emotional experiences of producers towards current AMU practices can be a starting point to making future behavioral changes that could reduce the emergence of antimicrobial resistance challenge. Between June 2017 and March 2018, seven focus group meetings of Tennessee (TN) beef and dairy cattle producers were conducted to evaluate producers' emotional views regarding responsible AMU in TN cattle. Sixty-two TN cattle producers participated and emotively expressed the following: (1) deep connections to animals in ways that improve animal and public health; (2) pride in their quality of products; (3) distress that consumers misconceive their AMU practices as indiscriminate; and (4) recommended that producers be more transparent about their AMU practices and the public improve their awareness for detecting marketers' deceptive product labels that take advantage of public ignorance. Knowledge of these producers' emotions would help educators target more successful behavioral change campaigns, improving stewardship in AMU practices among producers.

ABSTRACT

Antimicrobials have been widely used in dairy farms to prevent and control dairy cattle diseases since 1960s. This led to the emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria (ARB) that, along with their antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), can spread from dairy farms to humans. Therefore, regular antimicrobial resistance (AMR) monitoring is important to implement proper mitigation measures. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of AMR and extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing Escherichia coli in dairy cattle. A cross-sectional study was conducted in four dairy cattle farms (A-D) in East Tennessee. A total of 80 samples consisting of 20 samples each of bulk tank milk, feces, dairy cattle manure-amended soil, and prairie soil adjacent to the farms were collected and cultured for the isolation of E. coli. Tetracycline (TETr)-, third-generation cephalosporin (TGCr)- and nalidixic acid (NALr)-resistant E. coli (n = 88) were isolated and identified on agar media supplemented with TET, cefotaxime, and NAL, respectively. TGCr E. coli were tested for ESBLs and other coselected ARGs. TETr (74%, n = 88) was the most common, followed by TGCr (20%) and NALr (8%). Farms had significant (p < 0.001) differences: the highest prevalence of TGCr (55%) and TETr (100%) were observed in farm D, while all NALr isolates were from farm C. Over 83% of TGCr isolates (n = 18) harbored ESBL gene blaCTX-M. Majority (78%) of the E. coli isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR), being positive for beta-lactams (blaCTX-M), TETs tet(A), tet(B), tet(M)), sulfonamides (sul2), aminoglycosides (strA), and phenicols (floR). This study indicated the widespread occurrence of MDR ESBLs-E. coli in dairy cattle farms. AMR surveillance of more dairy farms and identification of farm-level risk factors are important to mitigate the occurrence and spread of ARB of significant public health importance, such as ESBLs-E. coli.

ABSTRACT

The objective was to determine temporal changes in hematological and immune parameters in response to naturally occurring bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in commercially managed stocker calves. Forty newly weaned beef steers purchased from auction markets were housed at a commercial stocker operation in Crossville, TN. Blood samples, rectal temperature, and thoracic ultrasonography (TUS; 1: normal to 3: severe) were collected on days 0, 7, 14, and 21. Castration status (FC: freshly castrated; PC: previously castrated) was determined on arrival based on presence of a fresh castration site at the scrotum. Calves received antibiotics for BRD based on clinical severity scoring (CSS; 0: moribund, 4: moribund) and rectal temperature. Complete blood counts (CBC) were performed. Calves were categorized based on the number of treatments (NumTrt) received (0x, 1x, and 2x). Temporal variations in CBC and immune parameters were analyzed using mixed model repeated measure ANOVA (Proc GLIMMIX; SAS 9.4). Variation of CBCs and immune parameters based on TUS was determined using mixed model ANOVA. There was a NumTrt by day interaction effect on the responses of white blood cells (WBC) (P = 0.04) and haptoglobin (HPT) (P = 0.04). On day 21, WBC were greater in the 2x NumTrt group than other groups, but there were no differences in WBC between NumTrt levels on other days. Haptoglobin was greater in the 2x group on days 14 and 21 than 0x or 1x. Red blood cells (RBC) (P = 0.02) and WBC (P = 0.04) differed between FC and PC groups, and lower RBC and WBC were observed in the FC group. A castration status × day effect for mean corpuscular volume (MCV; P = 0.04) was observed where FC group had higher MCV at days 14 and 21 than the PC group. Tumor necrosis factor-α differed based on NumTrt (P = 0.03) and higher concentrations were found in 2x group. We observed a day effect for IL-1ß (P = 0.009) and TNF-α (P = 0.001). Significant effect of TUS on HPT at day 14 (P = 0.0004) and day 21 (P = 0.002) was observed. Combining HPT and platelet explained 15% of the variability in treatment status on a given day, whereas HPT and hemoglobin explained 10% of the variability in lung consolidation status. Although hematological and immunological parameters varied largely in our study, the potential of combining HPT with hematological variables should be studied further. Results from this study would help in understanding temporal changes in CBC and immune parameters in newly received stocker cattle.


Blood and immune parameters are altered during bovine respiratory disease (BRD) progression and can be used for predicting disease status. We aimed looking at the dynamics of hematology and immunology in newly received stocker cattle in naturally occurring BRD. Forty newly received stocker cattle were managed by a local producer and monitored for BRD occurrence for 21 d after receiving during the high-risk period. Newly weaned calves were monitored as they experience several stress factors and become prone to BRD. Additionally, there are limited data related to immunological changes that occur in high-risk stocker cattle. Since there is no perfect diagnostic test for BRD, the diagnosis of BRD is likely missed when only visual signs are used. We observed that haptoglobin (HPT) was the most important parameter to differentiate BRD severity. The combination of HPT with blood parameters (hemoglobin and platelets) was useful to predict treatment and lung infection status. Therefore, measuring hematological and immunological parameters might be helpful to determine BRD status and facilitate treatment decisions in newly received stocker cattle.

Anecdotally, Veterinary Feed Directive prescriptions in the southeastern United States (U.S.) are written most often for treatment and prevention of bovine anaplasmosis (BA) but seroprevalence estimates and factors associated with this disease are currently unavailable in Mississippi (MS). Bovine anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease of cattle caused by Anaplasma marginale, remains an economically important disease in U.S. The lack of recent seroprevalence of BA throughout the U.S. makes accurate assessment of production losses incurred by the cattle industry in the U.S. difficult, if not impossible to estimate. This study was aimed at determining the seroprevalence of and factors associated with BA in MS. Data were obtained from an active survey of 207 beef cows slaughtered between May 2013 and December, 2014 as well as from reviewing 5182 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories (VDLs) records of specimens from MS submitted for BA testing between 2002 and 2018. From the active surveillance, the overall observed apparent seroprevalence of BA in MS with cELISA was 28.99% (95% CI: 23.23 - 35.50%) while the estimated true seroprevalence was 29.02% (22.74 - 36.07%). However, from the laboratory records, the overall apparent period seroprevalence of BA in MS between 2002 and 2018 irrespective of diagnostic assay used was 16.72% (15.73 - 17.76%) and yearly increase in the diagnosis of BA followed a significant trend (P < 0.0001). With cELISA, the apparent seroprevalence of BA was 22.11% (20.78 - 23.49%) and the estimated true seroprevalence was 21.62% (20.18 - 23.11%). However, with CFT, the apparent seroprevalence of BA was 13.50% (10.75 - 16.81%) and the estimated true seroprevalence was 47.90% (36.30 - 61.87%). Factors associated with positive BA results were age, cattle type, and quarter of the year the specimens were submitted. The odds of the outcome were 22 as high in adults, 27 times as high in beef cattle, and 2 times as high between October to December in comparisons to juveniles, dairy cattle, and between April to June, respectively. Cattle population in the counties was not associated with positive BA results. Current records from the VDLs appear to accurately estimate the seroprevalence of BA in MS and thus serves as a reliable surveillance tool BA in the state. Because the burden of BA appears to be distributed throughout the state, future prevention and control measures for BA should focus on the identified putative risk factors and be intensified throughout MS.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate antimicrobial use (AMU) is a key modifiable factor that leads to the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The objectives of this study were to determine the following among Tennessee beef cattle producers: (1) the opinions on factors driving AMU (2) opinions on alternatives to antimicrobials, (3) the knowledge and perceptions regarding AMU and AMR, and (4) the preferred avenues for receiving information on prudent AMU. A survey questionnaire was made available to participants both in print and online from January 26, 2018 through May 11, 2018. The questions targeted the producers' demographics and their AMU practices; factors driving producer's choice of antimicrobials; perceptions, opinions and concerns about AMU and AMR in cattle production. Ordinal logistic regression was used to test for associations between the captured demographic information and producers' degree of concern about AMR. RESULTS: Overall, 231 beef producers responded to all or some of the survey questions. More than 60% of the participants mentioned that they kept up-to-date written records on antimicrobial purchases and AMU. Regarding extra-label use, 169 (84.1%) of the 201 respondents did not practice extra-label AMU. Profitability of the beef operation was a key factor influencing the decisions of many producers to use antimicrobials for disease management and prevention on their farms. Of the 228 producers who completed the question on the rating of their degree of concern about AMR, 50 (21.9%) reported that they were very concerned about AMR, 133 (58.3%) were moderately concerned, and 36 (15.8%) reported that they were not concerned about AMR. Nine producers (4%) did not rate their degree of concern about AMR because they were not familiar with what antimicrobial resistance meant. The inferential analyses suggested that younger beef producers were significantly less concerned about AMR when compared to the older ones (P = 0.019). Regarding avenues for receiving information on prudent AMU, no single medium was most preferred by all the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to promote the use of written antimicrobial treatment protocols among beef producers in Tennessee. Continued training for beef producers on infection prevention and control and prudent AMU is needed.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of hydromorphone and dexmedetomidine at inducing emesis in cats. DESIGN: Prospective, blinded, randomized crossover study. SETTING: Veterinary university teaching hospital. ANIMALS: 12 healthy purpose-bred cats. INTERVENTIONS: Cats were randomly assigned to receive hydromorphone (0.1 mg/kg, subcutaneously) or dexmedetomidine (7 µg/kg, IM). Following administration, the incidences of emesis, number of emetic events, signs of nausea (hypersalivation, lip licking), temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and sedation score were recorded for 6 hours. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Emesis was successful in 9 of 12 (75%) cats when treated with hydromorphone and in 7 of 12 (58%) cats when treated with dexmedetomidine (P = 0.67). Dexmedetomidine was more likely to cause sedation than hydromorphone (P < 0.001). Heart rate in cats was significantly decreased at 1 and 2 hours post-hydromorphone (P = 0.003, 0.014, respectively) and at 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 hours post-dexmedetomidine (P = 0.001, 0.003, 0.038, 0.013, 0.001, respectively). Cats were more likely to develop an increase in body temperature with hydromorphone administration although this was not clinically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the present study indicate that hydromorphone is an effective alternative to dexmedetomidine for the induction of emesis in cats. Hydromorphone appears to cause less sedation and less decrease in heart rate. Further investigation into the most adequate dose of hydromorphone for optimizing emesis is warranted.

ABSTRACT

Since January 1, 2017, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has fully implemented the Veterinary Feed Directive (VFD) final rule aimed at facilitating the judicious use of medically important antimicrobials in food-producing animals. The objective of this study was to identify the common perceptions of Tennessee (TN) cattle producers regarding the VFD. We used a combination of focus groups and survey questionnaires to explore TN cattle producers' perceptions regarding the VFD. Preliminary findings from seven focus groups of 62 producers were used in the development of the questionnaire sent both online and in-print to rest of cattle producers in TN. The beef focus group participants perceived the VFD: to be a top-down policy; to have led to unregulated access to in-feed antimicrobials; a regulation that has limited the producers' ability to prevent disease and leading to economic losses; to negatively affect small producers; and to be affected by challenges related to prescription writing and disposal of un-used medicines. The dairy focus group participants perceived the VFD as unnecessary and burdensome, to have affected small producers, and introduced additional costs. Among the survey questionnaire respondents, 35 (15.4%) beef producers and 6 (13.6%) dairy producers respectively were not familiar at all with the VFD. Forty-eight (21.1%) beef producers and 11 (25%) dairy producers were slightly familiar with VFD. Gender was significantly associated (P = 0.02) with the beef producers' belief in the usefulness of the VFD. Similarly, for dairy producers, herd size was significantly associated (P = 0.002) with their perceptions regarding the usefulness of the VFD. The findings of this study could inform future VFD policy review processes. More awareness regarding the VFD and its benefits is needed among both beef and dairy producers in TN.

Anecdotally, Veterinary Feed Directive prescriptions in many states in the southeastern United States (U.S.) are written most often for treatment and prevention of bovine anaplasmosis (BA). This tick-borne disease of cattle caused by Anaplasma marginale remains an economically important disease in U.S. However, there are no prevalence estimates of this disease in Georgia (GA). Thus, this study was aimed at determining the seroprevalence of BA in GA. In an active cull beef cow screening for BA, 293 beef cows were sampled from one cattle auction barn and one slaughterhouse between May 2013 and September 2014. These cows originated from 6 of 159 counties in GA. The top 3 counties sampled were Gordon (241 samples), Carroll (25 samples), and Emanuel (12 samples). Of the 293 sampled beef cows, 13 were positive and 280 were negative for BA. Hence, with competitive ELISA, the overall observed apparent seroprevalence of BA in GA was 4.44% (95% CI: 2.61-7.44%) while the estimated true seroprevalence was 2.62% (95% CI: 5.2-5.87%). The top 2 prevalent counties were Carroll and Gordon with apparent seroprevalence of 8% (95% CI: 2.22-24.97) and 4.78% (95% CI: 2.69-8.36), respectively and estimated true seroprevalence of 6.45% (95% CI: 0-25.37) and 2.99% (95% CI: 0.54-6.89), respectively. Although not significant, counties with specimen submissions for BA testing had a greater cattle population and number of cattle farms than counties without specimen submissions. Nevertheless, future prevention and control measures for BA should out of caution target counties with ≥5000 total cattle heads.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increased awareness of antimicrobial resistance in both animals and humans, which has triggered concerns over non-judicious antimicrobial use. In the United States, antimicrobial use in food-producing animals for growth promotion or improved feed efficiency is perceived as non-judicious. To facilitate judicious antimicrobial use, the United States Food and Drug Administration implemented the Veterinary Feed Directive, effective from January 1, 2017. Interventions, such as the VFD, designed to ensure the judicious use of antimicrobials among cattle producers may be more effective if the factors that inform and influence producer AMU practices are addressed. The specific objectives of this study were to determine the following among Tennessee beef cattle producers: (1) the most common drivers for using antimicrobials, (2) the perceived alternatives to antimicrobials, (3) the knowledge and perceptions regarding antimicrobial resistance, and (4) the preferred avenues for receiving information on prudent antimicrobial use. A total of 5 focus group meetings with beef producers were conducted in East, Middle, and West Tennessee. Each focus group was video recorded and thematic analysis was performed using NVivo. RESULTS: The factors that producers considered to drive antimicrobial use were the type of cattle operation, disease and animal welfare, economic factors, veterinarian consultation, producer's experience and peer support, Veterinary Feed Directive, and perceived drug efficacy. Vaccination, proper nutrition, and other good management practices were considered alternatives to antimicrobial use. To encourage vaccine use among small producers, participants suggested packaging vaccines into smaller quantities. Antimicrobial resistance was perceived to be a problem affecting animal and public health. Participants suggested additional education for cattle producers on the prudent use of antimicrobials as a measure for improving antimicrobial use. The veterinarian, producer associations and meetings, and county extension agents emerged as trusted avenues for channeling information on prudent antimicrobial use to cattle producers. CONCLUSIONS: Several factors drive antimicrobial use among cattle producers in Tennessee. Participants generally perceived their antimicrobial use to be discreet and only when necessary. More awareness of drivers for the development of antimicrobial resistance and continuing education on prudent antimicrobial use is needed for Tennessee beef producers.

ABSTRACT

Indiscriminate antimicrobial use (AMU) is a factor contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The objectives of this study were to (1) identify factors influencing AMU practices of veterinary clinicians at The University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center (UTVMC), (2) analyze the clinicians' preferential choices of antimicrobials, and (3) evaluate their perceptions, opinions, and concerns regarding AMU and AMR. A total of 121 clinicians were surveyed. Among the 62 respondents, culture and susceptibility test results and pressure from clients were the most and least important factors in their antimicrobial prescription decision-making, respectively. Compared to clinicians who obtained their veterinary degree from 1970 to 1999, those who graduated from 2000 to 2009 and 2010-2016 were 3.96 (P = 0.034) and 5.39 (P = 0.01) times less concerned about AMR, respectively. There is a critical need to increase awareness about judicious AMU practices among clinicians, increase emphasis about AMR in the present veterinary curriculum, and implement antimicrobial stewardship program (AMS) in this institution. Educational activities in combination with awareness campaigns and the stewardship programs could be used to improve AMU practices at this hospital. More client education on AMR is needed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to identify any dietary, signalment, geographic and clinical factors associated with hematuric struvite crystalluria (HSC) in a population of cats that visit general care veterinary hospitals in the USA. METHODS: In total, 4032 cats that had a first-time diagnosis of HSC and 8064 control cats with no history of hematuria or crystalluria were identified from medical records of all cats examined between 2007 and 2011 at 790 US veterinary hospitals. Extracted variables included age, sex, neuter status, breed, diet, urinalysis results and history of cystitis. Potential associations between these variables and HSC were estimated. RESULTS: Controlling for other factors, young cats fed a dry diet had an increased likelihood of HSC relative to young cats fed a non-dry diet. However, as age increased, the likelihood of HSC declined for cats fed a dry diet and increased for cats fed a non-dry diet. Moreover, the odds of HSC were significantly greater when cats were unneutered (vs neutered; odds ratio [OR] 45.52) or had a thin (vs heavy) body condition (OR 23.81), diagnosis of cystitis (OR 2.84), urine protein concentration >30 mg/dl (OR 4.72), alkaline (vs neutral) urine pH (OR 3.34), pyuria (OR 23.67) or bacteriuria (OR 2.24). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: The present study provides estimates of the strengths of association between HSC and certain signalment and clinical characteristics of cats. This information could help clinicians to perform a more directed screening for struvite crystalluria in certain cat populations. Follow-up studies that build on the findings of this study could explore the clinical importance of HSC in cats.

ABSTRACT

Nonjudicious antimicrobial use (AMU) and inadequate antimicrobial stewardship are known modifiable factors driving the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). A mixed methods approach using a combination of focus groups and survey questionnaires was used to explore the AMU practices of Tennessee (TN) dairy cattle producers. Specifically, the objectives of the study were to determine the following: (1) the most common drivers for using antimicrobials, (2) perceived alternatives to antimicrobials, (3) knowledge of and perceptions regarding AMR, (4) and the appropriate avenues for receiving information on prudent AMU. Two focus groups were conducted, one in July 2017 and the other in March 2018. The questionnaire was simultaneously made available to participants both in print form and online from January 26, 2018, through May 11, 2018. Twenty-three dairy producers participated in the focus groups and 45 responded to the survey. Eight (18.6%) producers never used bacterial culture and sensitivity testing (C/S) to select antimicrobials, more than half (25 producers (58.1%)) sometimes used C/S, four (9.3%) used C/S about half the time, five (11.6%) most of the time, and one (2.3%) always used C/S. The most common drivers for using antimicrobials were disease and animal welfare, pathogen surveillance, economic factors, veterinarian recommendation, producer's experience and judgment, drug attributes, and the Veterinary Feed Directive. Good management practices, vaccination, use of immunomodulatory products, and use of appropriate technology for early disease detection were considered alternatives to AMU. Four (9.1%) dairy producers were very concerned about AMR, 27 (61.4%) moderately concerned, and 10 (22.7%) not concerned. The veterinarian was considered to be a trusted source of information on prudent AMU. Use of C/S test results for antimicrobial selection is widespread among TN dairy producers. There is a need to popularize/promote selective dry cow therapy among TN dairy producers.

Bovine anaplasmosis (BA), caused by Anaplasma marginale, is an economically important tick-borne disease of cattle in the United States (U.S.) and worldwide. Anecdotally, Veterinary Feed Directive prescriptions in the southeastern U.S. are written mostly for treatment/prevention of BA. However, there are no recent temporal seroprevalence estimates of BA in Texas (TX). Thus, this study was aimed at determining the seroprevalence of and factors associated with BA in TX. Data were obtained from an active slaughter survey (n = 215) performed between August and December 2014 as well as from reviewing Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratories (TVMDLs) records of specimens submitted for BA testing from January 2002 to June 2012 (n = 15,460). Irrespective of the assay used, the overall apparent seroprevalence of BA in TX between 2002 and 2012 was 15.91% (95% CI: 15.34 - 16.50%) and the yearly increase in seroprevalence followed a significant trend (P < .0001). With cELISA, the apparent seroprevalence of BA was 13.49% (95% CI: 9.56 - 18.7%) and 13.02% (95% CI: 9.74 - 17.18%) for the slaughter survey and TVMDLs records between October and December 2011, respectively. Whereas the estimated true seroprevalence for the same period was 12.35% (95% CI: 8.04 - 18.05%) and 12.78% (95% CI: 9.19 - 17.30%), respectively. Factors associated with positive BA results were age, breed, diagnostic assay used, year and quarter of the year the specimens were submitted. The odds of the outcome were 1.5 times as high when cattle were adults (vs juvenile). In comparison to other breeds, the odds of the outcome were 11.57, 7.16, and 2.5 times higher in Hereford, Angus, and mixed breeds, respectively. When compared to 2003, the odds of the diagnosis of BA was approximately 2 times as high in 2010 but 3 times as high in 2002, 2005, and 2011 and approximately 4 times as high in 2006 and 2007. In comparison to the duration from October to December, the odds of the outcome were approximately 1.5 as high from January to March and from July to September durations. Counties with specimen submissions for BA testing had a significantly greater cattle population (p = .0061) and number of cattle farms (p < .001) than counties without specimen submissions. Subsequent prevention and control measures for BA should target these factors and should prioritize on counties with higher cattle population in the eastern part of TX. Furthermore, TVMDLs records appear sufficient for the surveillance of BA in TX.

Bovine anaplasmosis (BA) is tick-borne disease of cattle caused by Anaplasma marginale and it remains an economically important disease in the United States (U.S.). We have anecdotal information that Veterinary Feed Directive prescriptions in Kentucky (KY) are written most often for treatment and prevention of BA. However, there are no recent prevalence estimates of this disease in KY. Thus, this study was aimed at determining the seroprevalence of and factors associated with BA in KY. Data were obtained from an active slaughter survey (n = 232) performed between May and July 2013 as well as from reviewing The University of Kentucky Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UKVDL) records of specimens submitted for BA testing from 2002-2012 (n = 2,573). With competitive ELISA, the apparent prevalence of BA in KY was 10.78% (95% CI: 7.41-15.42%) and 11.58% (95% CI: 10.31-12.98%) for the slaughter survey and laboratory records, respectively. Whereas the estimated true prevalence was 9.44% (95% CI: 5.65-14.48%) and 10.3% (95% CI: 8.92-11.8%), respectively. From the laboratory records, factors associated with positive BA results were age, breed, whether specimens were submitted singularly or as a group, year and quarter of the year the specimens were submitted. The odds of the outcome were 5 times as high when cattle were adults (vs juvenile) and almost 4 times as high when specimens were submitted singularly (vs group). In comparison to Holstein breed, the odds of the outcome were 3.5 and 2.5 times higher in Angus and mixed breeds, respectively. The odds of a diagnosis of BA varied in an undulating pattern by year of sample submission. When compared to 2011, the odds of a diagnosis of BA was approximately 3 times as high in 2005, 2008, and 2009 and approximately 5 times as high in 2004, 2006, and 2012. In comparison to the duration from January to March, the odds of the outcome were almost 20 times as high from July to September but 10 times as high from October to December durations. Counties with specimen submissions for BA testing had a significantly greater cattle population and number of cattle farms than counties without specimen submissions. Future prevention and control measures for BA should target these factors and should be weighted more on counties with higher cattle population. Furthermore, current records from the UKVDL appear sufficient for the surveillance of BA in KY.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE To investigate the use of canine whole blood (WB) for measurement of ammonia concentration by use of a point-of-care ammonia meter and to compare results of measuring ammonia concentrations in WB, EDTA-anticoagulated WB, and plasma. ANIMALS 40 client-owned dogs. PROCEDURES A blood sample (2 mL) was obtained from each dog. One drop of WB was immediately applied to a test strip for evaluation with an ammonia meter. The remainder of the blood sample was placed in an EDTA-containing tube, and 1 drop of EDTA-anticoagulated WB was applied to a test strip. The remaining EDTA-anticoagulated WB sample was centrifuged, and the plasma was harvested and placed on ice. One drop of plasma was applied to a test strip; the remainder of the plasma sample was transported on ice and used for ammonia measurement with a reference laboratory instrument. All samples were tested within 1 hour after sample collection. Results were evaluated to detect significant differences in ammonia concentration. RESULTS Ammonia concentrations did not differ significantly between WB and EDTA-anticoagulated WB and between plasma samples measured with the meter and reference laboratory instrument. However, median ammonia concentration was significantly higher in plasma than in WB or EDTA-anti-coagulated WB. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Anticoagulant-free WB was a valid sample for measurement by use of the ammonia meter. Plasma samples had higher ammonia concentrations than did WB samples. Results for each sample type should be interpreted by use of specimen- and method-specific reference intervals.
