ABSTRACT

Previously, we established a homogeneous assay for membrane progesterone receptor alpha (mPRα) ligands by conjugating semiconductor nanoparticles known as graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to mPRα. When mixed with a progesterone-BSA-fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugate (P4-BSA-FITC), fluorescence occurred by fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) but was reduced by the ligand-receptor binding activity. The established way showed ligand specificity as mPRα protein. In this study, we tried to establish the same way for nuclear progesterone receptor (Pgr). The ligand-binding domain (LBD) of zebrafish Pgr (zPgrLBD) was expressed as a fusion protein with glutathione S-transferase (GST) (GST-zPgrLBD). The recombinant protein was then purified and coupled with GQDs to produce GQD-conjugated GST-zPgrLBD (GQD-GST-zPgrLBD). When mixed with a P4-BSA-FITC and activated by 370 nm light, fluorescence at 520 nm appeared by FRET mechanism. Fluorescence at 520 nm was reduced by adding free progesterone to the reaction mixture. Reduction of fluorescence was induced by zPgr ligands but not by steroids or chemicals that do not interact with zPgr. The results showed the formation of a complex of GQD-GST-zPgrLBD and P4-BSA-FITC with ligand-receptor binding. The binding of the compounds was further confirmed by a radiolabeled steroid binding assay. A homogenous ligand-binding assay for nuclear progesterone receptor has been established.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: The efficacy and safety of antidepressant augmentation therapy with aripiprazole (AATA) has been established; however, the ongoing effects of continuing aripiprazole after remission remain unclear because no studies have examined this issue. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to explore the effect of AATA discontinuation on the major depressive disorder (MDD) recurrence risk in patients with remitted MDD after AATA. METHODS: This 24-week, multicenter, placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized trial evaluated recurrence risk in patients with MDD who achieved remission with AATA. Differences in MDD recurrence, as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, between the two groups were compared using survival analysis. The differences in depressive symptom severity and social functioning between the two groups were compared using a mixed model with repeated measures. Extrapyramidal symptoms and akathisia were also assessed. RESULTS: Twenty-three participants were randomized and treated. Two patients in each group experienced recurrence during the study. Kaplan-Meier analysis with Log-rank comparison showed no difference in recurrence between groups (p = 0.642). No significant difference in interactions between group and period was observed in the 17-item Hamilton depression rating scale (p = 0.492) or the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (p = 0.638). No patients developed extrapyramidal symptoms or akathisia. CONCLUSIONS: Definitive conclusions could not be drawn owing to the small sample size. This study represents a starting point for investigating the safety of aripiprazole discontinuation on recurrence in patients with MDD who have achieved remission with AATA. Future studies with appropriate sample sizes calculated based on this study are needed.

ABSTRACT

A homogeneous assay was developed to evaluate ligands that target the membrane progesterone receptor alpha (mPRα) of goldfish. This was achieved by employing graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a type of semiconductor nanoparticle conjugated to the goldfish mPRα. When progesterone-BSA-fluorescein isothiocyanate (P4-BSA-FITC) was combined with the other agents, fluorescence was observed through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). However, this fluorescence was quenched by binding between the ligand and receptor. This established method demonstrated the ligand selectivity of the mPRα protein. Then, the methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris was used to express the goldfish mPRα (GmPRα) protein. The recombinant purified GmPRα protein was coupled with graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to generate GQD-conjugated goldfish mPRα (GQD-GmPRα). Fluorescence at a wavelength of 520 nm was observed through FRET upon the combination of P4-BSA-FITC and subsequent activation by ultraviolet (UV) light. Adding free P4 to the reaction mixture resulted in a decrease in fluorescence intensity at a wavelength of 520 nm. The fluorescence was reduced by the administration of GmPRα ligands but not by steroids that do not interact with GmPRα. The findings indicated that the interaction between the ligand and receptor led to the formation of a complex involving GQD-GmPRα and P4-BSA-FITC. The interaction between the compounds and GQD-GmPRα was additionally validated by a binding experiment that employed the radiolabeled natural ligand [3H]-17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one. We established a ligand-binding assay for the fish membrane progesterone receptor that is applicable for screening compounds.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a group of diseases classified by left ventricular (LV) EF, a measure of pump function. However, LVEF does not reflect LV contractility. Previous studies have shown that tissue Doppler-derived LV isovolumic contraction velocity (IVCv) correlates well with the LV peak dP/dt, an index of LV contractility. We explored whether LV IVCv is associated with 1-year post-discharge outcomes in HFpEF. METHODS: We enrolled 113 patients (median age, 86 years, 45 male) with HFpEF (EF on admission ≥ 50%) who were admitted to our hospital for the treatment of acute HF. Clinical characteristics including echocardiographic data were obtained before discharge. IVCv was obtained from the tissue Doppler waveforms of both the septal and lateral mitral annulus of the apical 4-chamber view and averaged data were used. Primary outcomes were all-cause death or unplanned hospitalization due to HF within the first year. RESULTS: Among all patients, median LVEF was 61%, left atrial diameter was 47 mm, E/e' was 17.5, and IVCv was 4.5 cm/sec; mean tricuspid regurgitation velocity was 2.6 m/sec. Regarding laboratory data, the median plasma B-type natriuretic peptide level was 185 pg/mL. Thirty-four events occurred (15 deaths, 19 unplanned hospitalizations due to HF) within the first year. In multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses, IVCv was significantly associated with outcomes (hazard ratio .68, 95% confidence interval .50-.89, p = .0095), independent of general characteristics, echocardiographic measures and pertinent laboratory parameters. CONCLUSION: LV IVCv was independently associated with 1-year outcomes in patients with HFpEF.

ABSTRACT

Background: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) diagnostic criteria for inflammatory demyelinating central nervous system diseases included symptomatic narcolepsy; however, no relevant case-control studies exist. We aimed to examine the relationship among cerebrospinal fluid orexin-A (CSF-OX) levels, cataplexy and diencephalic syndrome; determine risk factors for low-and-intermediate CSF-OX levels (≤200 pg/mL) and quantify hypothalamic intensity using MRI. Methods: This ancillary retrospective case-control study included 50 patients with hypersomnia and 68 controls (among 3000 patients) from Akita University, the University of Tsukuba and community hospitals (200 facilities). Outcomes were CSF-OX level and MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio. Risk factors were age, sex, hypersomnolence and MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio >130%. Logistic regression was performed for the association between the risk factors and CSF-OX levels ≤200 pg/mL. Results: The hypersomnia group (n=50) had significantly more cases of NMOSD (p<0.001), diencephalic syndrome (p=0.006), corticosteroid use (p=0.011), hypothalamic lesions (p<0.023) and early treatment (p<0.001). No cataplexy occurred. In the hypersomnia group, the median CSF-OX level was 160.5 (IQR 108.4-236.5) pg/mL and median MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio was 127.6% (IQR 115.3-149.1). Significant risk factors were hypersomnolence (adjusted OR (AOR) 6.95; 95% CI 2.64 to 18.29; p<0.001) and MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio >130% (AOR 6.33; 95% CI 1.18 to 34.09; p=0.032). The latter was less sensitive in predicting CSF-OX levels ≤200 pg/mL. Cases with MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio >130% had a higher rate of diencephalic syndrome (p<0.001, V=0.59). Conclusions: Considering orexin as reflected by CSF-OX levels and MRI hypothalamus-to-caudate-nucleus-intensity ratio may help diagnose hypersomnia with diencephalic syndrome.

ABSTRACT

Background: Romosozumab is associated with an increased risk of cardiac or cerebrovascular events. Identifying the risk factors for these events could contribute to the safe use of romosozumab. Objective: This study aimed to investigate risk factors for cardiac or cerebrovascular events in romosozumab users. Methods: First, disproportionality analysis was performed to compare the frequency of cardiac or cerebrovascular events, using data from the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database. Next, multivariate logistic analysis was performed to investigate risk factors for cardiac or cerebrovascular events in romosozumab users. Results: In total, 859 romosozumab users were identified. A disproportionality of both cardiac and cerebrovascular events was observed in only romosozumab users. Multivariate logistic analysis revealed that the risk of cardiac events in romosozumab users was significantly increased in patients with cardiac disease (odds ratio [OR]: 5.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.5-9.9; P < 0.01) and hypertension (OR: 1.6, 95% CI 1.0-2.7; P = 0.047). In addition, the risk of cerebrovascular events in romosozumab users was significantly increased in the presence of cerebrovascular disease (OR: 2.7, 95% CI 1.2-6.2; P = 0.02) and hypertension (OR: 2.6, 95% CI 1.7-3.9; P < 0.01). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that hypertension may increase the risk of cardiac or cerebrovascular events in romosozumab users. Although additional studies are needed to assess other associated factors, these findings may contribute to the appropriate use of romosozumab and limit adverse events.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: To retrospectively evaluate the treatment outcomes of thermal ablation for renal metastatic tumors. Materials and Methods: Thirteen consecutive patients with small renal metastatic tumors (≤3 cm), who underwent thermal ablation between 2009 and 2020, were included in this study. Eight patients had extra-renal tumors during renal ablation. The primary tumors were adenoid cystic carcinoma in four patients, lung cancer in three, hemangiopericytoma in three, leiomyosarcoma in two, and thyroid cancer in one. The therapeutic effects, safety, survival rate, prognostic factor, and renal function were evaluated. Results: We performed 18 ablation sessions (cryoablation, n = 13; radiofrequency ablation, n = 5) on 19 renal metastases with a mean diameter of 1.7 cm, which resulted in a primary technique efficacy rate of 100% without procedure-related deaths or major complications. Renal function significantly declined 6 months after ablation (P = 0.0039). During the mean follow-up period of 31.2 ± 22.4 months (range, 2.7-71.4 months), one patient had local tumor progression at 11.9 months following radiofrequency ablation. The overall survival rates at 1 and 3 years after ablation were 76.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 54.0%-99.8%) and 59.3% (95% CI, 31.3%-87.3%), respectively. Tumor size ≥ 2 cm (P = 0.02) and metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer (P = 0.001) were significant worse prognostic factors in univariate analysis, and metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer (P = 0.01) was significant in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Percutaneous thermal ablation for small renal metastases is safe and feasible and can control local tumors.

ABSTRACT

Background: It has been shown in rabbit models that the sinus mucosa in contact with graft particles might experience a progressive thinning and perforations. The phenomenon depends on the graft used. Hence, the aim of the present study was to compare the damaging effects of a synthetic of a xenogeneic graft. Methods: Forty New Zealand rabbits received a bilateral sinus elevation. Both sinuses of twenty rabbits were grafted with a biphasic 60% hydroxyapatite and 40% ß-tricalcium phosphate while the other twenty received a deproteinized bovine bone mineral graft. Thinned sites (<40 µm) and perforations on the mucosa in contact with graft particles were evaluated after 2 and 10 weeks (ten animals each period). The width of the pseudostratified epithelium was also measured as control. Results: After 2 weeks of healing, 61 thinned sites were detected in the Synthetic group and 49 in the Xenogeneic group. After 10 weeks, the number of thinned mucosae increased to 79 sites in the Synthetic group (p = 0.222 between periods), and to 114 sites in the Xenogeneic group (p = 0.030 between groups; p = 0.001 between periods). Perforations were few in the 2-week period, two in two sinuses out of 20 in the Synthetic group, and four in two sinuses out of 20 in the Xenogeneic group (p = 0.721). In the 10-week period, the perforations increased to eight in the Synthetic group, distributed in six sinuses out of 20, and to sixteen in the Xenogeneic group, distributed in 11 sinuses out of 20 (p = 0.082). The pseudostratified epithelium presented a reduced width at the thinned sites. Conclusions: The contact with synthetic or xenogeneic grafts will induce thinning and possible perforations of the sinus mucosa. This effect will increase over time, and it is stronger at the xenogeneic than the synthetic graft.

ABSTRACT

Infectious granulomas arising in the kidney are rare. However, there are few reports regarding renal granulomas, such as xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis, sarcoidosis, malakoplakia, and tuberculosis. Here, we report a case of cryptococcal granuloma resembling a locally progressed tumor after percutaneous cryotherapy for renal cell carcinoma. A male patient in his 80s with rheumatoid arthritis underwent computed tomography (CT)-guided cryoablation for biopsy-proven papillary renal cell carcinoma. Follow-up contrast-enhanced CT imaging obtained 4 months after ablation confirmed an enhanced mass on the edge of the ablation zone. There were no symptoms related to the mass. This mass was radiologically diagnosed as local tumor progression and treated with repeated cryoablation. Percutaneous biopsy of the mass was performed immediately after the second cryoablation, and the mass was pathologically diagnosed as granuloma related to Cryptococcus infection. The patient was administered antifungal fluconazole for 1 year with a good outcome.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often causes cervical spine lesions as the disease condition progresses, which induce occipital neuralgia or cervical myelopathy requiring surgical interventions. Meanwhile, patients with RA are susceptible to infection or other complications in the perioperative period because they frequently have comorbidities and use immunosuppressive medications. However, the risk factors or characteristics of patients with RA who experience perioperative complications after cervical spine surgery remain unknown. A risk factor analysis of perioperative complications in patients with RA who underwent primary cervical spine surgery was conducted in the present study. METHODS: A total of 139 patients with RA who underwent primary cervical spine surgery from January 2001 to March 2020 were retrospectively investigated. Age and height, weight, serum albumin, serum C-reactive protein, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS), Charlson comorbidity index, medications used, cervical spine lesion, surgery time, bleeding volume, and procedures were collected from medical records to compare the patients with complications to those without complications after surgery. The risk factors for perioperative complications were assessed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-eight patients (20.1%) had perioperative complications. Perioperative complications were significantly associated with the following factors [data presented as odds ratio]: lower height [0.928, p=0.007], higher ASA-PS [2.296, p=0.048], longer operation time [1.013, p=0.003], more bleeding volume [1.004, p=0.04], higher rates of vertical subluxation [2.914, p=0.015] and subaxial subluxation (SAS) [2.507, p=0.036], occipito-cervical (OC) fusion [3.438, p=0.023], and occipito-cervical/thoracic (long) fusion [8.021, p=0.002] in univariate analyses. In multivariate analyses, lower height [0.915, p=0.005], higher ASA-PS [2.622, p=0.045] and long fusion [7.289, p=0.008] remained risk factors. High-dose prednisolone use [1.247, p=0.028], SAS [6.413, p=0.018], OC fusion [17.93, p=0.034], and long fusion [108.1, p<0.001] were associated with severe complications. CONCLUSIONS: ASA-PS and long fusion could be indicators predicting perioperative complications in patients with RA after cervical spine surgery. In addition, cervical spine lesions requiring OC fusion or long fusion and high-dose prednisolone use were suggested to be risk factors for increasing severe complications.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The treatment of the surface of titanium implants with argon plasma improved its hydrophilicity and cell adhesion, resulting in higher bone apposition on implant and graft surfaces. The spontaneous perforation over time of the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation has been documented in experimental studies at both implants and graft particles. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of plasma argon treatment of the implant surface on bone apposition and on the rate of sinus mucosa perforations. METHODS: A sinus lifting procedure was performed bilaterally in sixteen rabbits, and implants, either treated with argon plasma or left without treatment (control), were placed simultaneously without grafts. After 8 weeks, histological analyses were carried out. RESULTS: A collapse of the sinus mucosa was observed at all implants. Twenty-four out of thirty-two implants presented sinus mucosa perforations at the apex. Several perforations were also found at the threads. Thinned mucosa sites (width < 40 µm) were found around almost all implants. About 2.6-2.9 mm of the apical regions of the implant did not present signs of osseointegration and about 1.3 mm were exposed to the sinus cavity. No statistically significant differences were found between plasma and control sites. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the sinus mucosa was damaged and perforated by direct contact with treated and non-treated implant surfaces. The treatment of the implant surface with argon plasma did not affect the outcomes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: A thickening of the sinus mucosa is observed after sinus floor augmentation. The objective of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of the presence of septa in the dimensional variation and ostium involvement over time of the Schneiderian mucosa after sinus floor augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen sinuses with septa (septa group) and 15 without (control group) were selected. CBCTs taken before surgery, and were analyzed after 1 week and after 9 months. Schneiderian membrane thickness changes over time and involvement of the ostium were evaluated. RESULTS: Four perforations occurred in the septa group and none in the control group. After 1 week of healing, the sinus mucosa thickness increased in height by 5.7 mm and 7.1 mm in the septa and control groups, respectively. In this period, the patency of the ostium decreased in both groups, and three infundibula were obstructed in the septa group, and five in the control group. The mucosa was thicker and the edema was closer to the ostium in the control compared to in the septa group. After 9 months of healing, the dimensions regressed to normal pattern and no obstruction of the infundibula were observed. No statistically significant differences were found between septa and control groups. CONCLUSIONS: after one week of healing, the sinus mucosa increased in dimensions in both septa and control groups. However, the sinus mucosa presented a tendency of being thicker and closer to the ostium, resulting in a higher number of infundibula obstructions, in the control group compared to in the septa group. After 9 months, the sinus mucosa regressed to normal dimensions and no obstructions of the infundibula were observed in any group.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Due to the lack of data comparing the biological behavior of two formulations, granules and paste, of alloplastic graft from microtomographic and histomorphometric points of view, the aim of the present experiment was to compare the histomorphometric and microtomographic healing of two formulations, i.e., granules (MR sites) or paste (MR-inject sites) of an alloplastic graft composed of a combination of beta-tricalcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite used for maxillary sinus lifting. METHODS: A sinus lifting procedure was carried out bilaterally in 20 rabbits, and the elevated space was filled with either paste or granules of an alloplastic material. A collagen membrane was placed on the antrostomy and the animals were euthanized after 2 or 10 weeks, 10 animals each group. Microtomographic and histological analyses were performed. RESULTS: Higher proportions of new bone formation were found at the MR, compared to the MR-inject sites both after 2 weeks (2.65 ± 2.89% vs. 0.08 ± 0.12%; p < 0.01) and 10 weeks of healing (34.20 ± 13.86 vs. 23.28 ± 10.35%; p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS: It was concluded that new bone formation was faster in the MR sites, compared to the MR-inject. However, a longer time of healing should be allowed to make final conclusions about the efficiency in bone formation of the paste formulation of the biomaterial used in the present study.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Various anatomical parameters might influence the surgical approach for maxillary sinus floor elevation. The objective of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the influence of anatomical parameters on the dimensions of the subantral space and of the sinus mucosa thickening after sinus floor elevation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-eight maxillary sinuses in sixty-five patients were evaluated on cone beam computed tomographies taken before surgery and after one week (t1w) and nine months (t9m). Several parameters such as the distance XF between an axis parallel to the base of the nose (X-axes) and the sinus floor (F) were correlated with the height gain (IF) at t1w and t9m and the post-surgical edema. RESULTS: A weak significant positive correlation was observed between height gain vs. sinus height of interest (XF), the balcony, and the sinus floor angle. The post-surgical edema was influenced by the initial mucosa thickness and the xenograft used. CONCLUSIONS: Various parameters might affect height gain and sinus mucosa thickening after sinus floor elevation. The height of interest, the balcony, and the sinus floor angle showed significant correlations with height gain. The initial thickness of the mucosa and the biomaterial used influenced the post-surgical edema.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: D-dimer has the advantage of excluding venous thromboembolism (VTE) due to its high sensitivity but is disadvantageous for diagnosing VTE due to its low specificity. A method to increase the usefulness of D-dimer in the diagnosis of VTE is warranted. This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of the combination of D-dimer and soluble fibrin monomer complex (SFMC), which has been suggested as a new candidate marker for VTE, in VTE diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective study in 109 subjects was performed at a psychiatric department between August 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019. Subjects' levels of D-dimer and SFMC were measured simultaneously. Plasma levels of D-dimer and SFMC were measured using NANOPIA® D-dimer and NANOPIA® SF. Subjects with positive D-dimer (≥1.0 µg/mL) results underwent contrast computed tomography for confirmation of VTE within 12 hours of D-dimer measurement. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to examine the usefulness of SFMC for the diagnosis of VTE. RESULTS: Only 109 of the 783 subjects without symptoms suggestive of VTE participated in the study. Out of 41 subjects with positive D-dimer results, 17 subjects were diagnosed with VTE. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to determine cutoff values. The area under the curves was 0.848 for SFMC (p<0.001, 95% CI 0.722 to 0.974), and the optimal cutoff value was 10.0 µg/mL (sensitivity 58.8%, specificity 100%, positive predictive value 100%, negative predictive value 77.4%). CONCLUSION: SFMC was useful for diagnosing VTE in the psychiatric patients with positive D-dimer results.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the biological and mechanical complications of angulated abutments on full-arch and partial jaw rehabilitations with a follow-up for at least 1 year. METHODS: Electronic search was carried out in MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science. Studies published between January 2000 and January 2019 were included. The quality of the included studies was assessed. The data extraction was focused on implant loss, marginal bone loss and mechanical complications, and meta-analyses were performed for marginal bone loss, mechanical complications and implant failure. RESULTS: Nine studies, three prospective and six retrospective cohort studies were included. They reported on 797 patients that received 4127 implants. The total number of abutments was 4079 of which 1673 were angulated, and 2406 were straight. All abutments were prefabricated. Angulated abutments were associated with increased implant failure rates (two studies; RR = 7.30; 95% CI = 2.79-19.08) and an effect that was both statistically significant (P < .001) and clinically relevant. Three studies reported differentiated data for mechanical and technical complications at 1 year of follow-up, being mostly related to the retention screw while screw fracture. Angulated abutments were associated with a statistically significant increase in MBL 1 year after insertion compared to straight abutments (three studies; MD = 0.08 mm; 95% CI = 0.01-0.14 mm; P = .02), which might be, however, clinically negligible. CONCLUSIONS: The prosthetic complications such as screw loosening and abutment loosening were frequent. After 1 year of follow-up, implants supporting angulated abutments yielded significantly more marginal bone loss than those supporting straight abutments.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In health examinations for local inhabitants in cadmium-polluted areas, only healthy people are investigated, suggesting that patients with severe cadmium nephropathy or itai-itai disease may be overlooked. Therefore, we performed hospital-based screening to detect patients with cadmium nephropathy in two core medical institutes in cadmium-polluted areas in Akita prefecture, Japan. METHODS: Subjects for this screening were selected from patients aged 60 years or older with elevated serum creatinine levels and no definite renal diseases. We enrolled 35 subjects from a hospital in Odate city and 22 from a clinic in Kosaka town. Urinary ß2-microglobulin and blood and urinary cadmium levels were measured. RESULTS: The criteria for renal tubular dysfunction and the over-accumulation of cadmium were set as a urinary ß2-microglobulin level higher than 10,000 µg/g cr. and a blood cadmium level higher than 6 µg/L or urinary cadmium level higher than 10 µg/g cr., respectively. Subjects who fulfilled both criteria were diagnosed with cadmium nephropathy. Six out of 57 patients (10.5% of all subjects) had cadmium nephropathy. CONCLUSIONS: This hospital-based screening is a very effective strategy for detecting patients with cadmium nephropathy in cadmium-polluted areas, playing a complementary role in health examinations for local inhabitants. ABSTRACT

A Pd catalyst supported on Ba-substituted LaAlO3 perovskite (Pd/La0.9Ba0.1AlO3-δ ) was investigated for NO reduction at low temperature by propylene, which revealed that Pd/La0.9Ba0.1AlO3-δ has remarkably higher activity than other Pd catalysts at low temperatures (≤573 K) for NO reduction by propylene. To elucidate the surface reaction pathway, transient response tests were conducted using 18O2. Also, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) measurements were conducted. Comparison with a Ba-impregnated catalyst (Pd/Ba/LaAlO3) demonstrated that Pd/La0.9Ba0.1AlO3-δ shows higher activity for the formation of oxygenated species (C x H y O z ) as an intermediate for NO reduction because the surface lattice oxygen has improved mobility via Ba2+ substitution in LaAlO3. Therefore, Pd/La0.9Ba0.1AlO3-δ have high activity for NO reduction, even at low temperatures in a humid condition.
