ABSTRACT

Colorectal cancer is thought to be more common in men than in women. The chromosomal locations of DNA gains and losses in surgical specimens of colorectal tumours were detected by comparative genomic hybridization and were compared by gender. Five chromosomal regions, 7p, 8p, 8q, Xp and Xq, contained multiple gains that were significantly more common in males than in females, and within these regions, the differences were significant for Xp21, Xp11.3, Xp11.4 and Xq26. Regions 1p, 3q, 11q, 12p, 12q and 15q contained multiple sites of gain that were significantly more common in females than in males. Tumours from male and female patients showed significantly more losses at 11p and 15q, and at 4q and Xq, respectively. The fact that gains in X-chromosomal regions were detected with a significantly higher frequency in tumours from male patients suggests that the difference between the genders might be explained by X-chromosomal inactivation.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the characteristics of 10 glaucomatous cases with microcornea, we measured corneal diameter, curvature, axial length, and depth of anterior chamber, and examined the eyes with a specular microscope and an ultrasound biomicroscope. The ten cases examined in this study included 1 case of cornea plana, 2 cases of sclerocornea, 2 cases of nanophthalmos, and 5 cases of anterior microphthalmos. Three of the 10 cases were combined with open angle glaucoma, and the others with closed angle glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma seemed like developmental glaucoma with angle maldevelopment. The closed angle type may appear at a younger age than in patients who have simple pupilary block. There are probably complex mechanisms related with closed angle glaucoma with microcornea. While differential diagnosis among these cases is relatively easy, we should evaluate how or why the intraocular pressure rises as far as possible before forming a treatment plan for each patient.

ABSTRACT

We used a specular microscope to evaluate the corneal endothelial cells in 119 eyes before and 2 to 3 weeks after trabeculectomy with topical mitomycin C. The endothelial cell density per square millimeter averaged 2,569 +/- 487 (mean +/- standard deviation) before surgery and 2,444 +/- 536 after surgery, showing a decrease of 4.98%. The hexagonality decreased by 1.7%, the coefficient of variation increased by 1.9, and the average cell area increased by 6.82%. There were no statistical differences as a whole in these values. Decrease in hexagonality was more frequent in eyes with prior intraocular or glaucoma surgery. Eyes treated by laser trabeculoplasty showed a decrease in endothelial cell density, an increase in coefficient of variation and an increase in hexagonality. Eyes with postoperative flat anterior chamber showed significant changes in each parameter. The findings show that trabeculectomy with topical mitomycin C does not significantly affect the corneal endothelial cells at 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

ABSTRACT

A month old girl was referred to our hospital for heart murmur and congestive heart failure. After the UCG and angiography, clinical diagnosis was tetralogy of Fallot, right aortic arch, isolation of left subclavian artery (Victorica type I), and a patent ductus arteriosus that originated from left subclavian artery. The direction of blood flow in the patent ductus arteriosus was from a subclavian artery to pulmonary artery, so she was in the condition of pulmonary over flow and appeared congestive heart failure, although she associated with tetralogy of Fallot. With intraoperative and postoperative examinations, we diagnosed the association of partial DiGeorge syndrome. Isolation of subclavian artery is uncommon, but this anomaly was classified by Victorica. Embryology of this anomaly was explained with hypothesis of double arch system. We had seen no reports of DiGeorge syndrome associated with isolation of a subclavian artery. But DiGeorge Syndrome is hypoplasia of branchiogenic organs, and subclavian arteries is differentiated from brachial arteries. So we supposed that this two lesions have the possibility of combination.

ABSTRACT

Various types of radiopharmacons such as 201Tl, 99mTc-pyrophosphate(PYP), 123I-metaiodobenzyl-guanidine(MIBG), 111In-antimyosin Fab (AM) and 123I-beta-methyl iodophenyl pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) were applied to a patient under successful reperfusion therapy. In the patient, elevated serum enzyme activity region in the subacute phase. Ten months after the ischemic event, AM uptake was noted at the region which maintained contractility. Two years after the ischemic event, depressed BMIPP uptake and delayed washout were noted at the apical region and the basal anteroseptal region. From these findings, the following conclusions were reached. Depressed 201Tl uptake was noted in the salvaged jeopardized myocardium. The lesions noted in the MIBG images showed depressed myocardial norepenephrine activity. This suggested that depressed sympathetic nervous function caused by severe ischemia persisted long after both myocardial perfusion and myocardial contractility had been restored. From abnormal AM uptake in the contractile myocardium myocardial cell damage, which permitted AM uptake, was persistent ten months after the ischemic event. Depressed BMIPP uptake and delayed washout suggested that abnormal fatty acid metabolism caused by severe ischemia was persistent. Severe ischemia caused various types of pathological states in the myocardium and radioisotope image was useful for studying these states.

ABSTRACT

EDTA-extractable protein (EEP) is a major extrinsic protein of lens fiber membrane. The EEP of calf lens separated three major bands by SDS-PAGE, and the molecular weights of these major bands were 34 kilodalton (kd.), 33 kd. and 32 kd. Combination of EEP with F-actin and some kinds of phospholipid containing liposomes depends on Ca2+. In two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, some spots of the calf-EEP partially overlapped with spots of lipocortin, which is a substrate for epidermal growth factor receptor/kinase and an inhibitor of phospholipase A2. The 34 kd. protein of the EEP cross-reacted to the antibody prepared against lipocortin of pig's aorta: These results suggest the important function of EEP in lens.
