ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, the prevalence of which is increasing. Genetic, genomic, and epigenetic changes play a significant role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. This review summarizes the impact of epigenetics on the development of psoriasis and highlights challenges for the future. The development of epigenetics provides a basis for the search for genetic markers associated with the major histocompatibility complex. Genome-wide association studies have made it possible to link psoriasis to genes and therefore to epigenetics. The acquired knowledge may in the future serve as a solid foundation for developing newer, increasingly effective methods of treating psoriasis. In this narrative review, we discuss the role of epigenetic factors in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: to analyse the effect of haematological indices on the occurrence of Delayed Graft Function (DGF) in patients undergoing kidney transplantation and on the function of the transplanted kidney on the 7th postoperative day. METHODS: 365 recipients who underwent kidney transplantation from a donor with known brain death between 2010 and 2017 were included in this retrospective study. Information from patient medical records, donor medical records, and donation and transplantation protocols was used for analysis. Statistica 13 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: In the study group, DGF occurred in 144 recipients (39.45%), and Non-Graft Function (NGF) occurred in 12 recipients (3.29%). Recipients who developed DGF had a significantly higher Neutrophil/Monocyte Ratio (NMR) before renal transplantation (p = 0.048), a lower NMR value on postoperative day 1 (p < 0.001), and a difference between the values on day 1 and before surgery (p < 0.001). In addition, they had a significantly lower Lymphocyte/Monocyte Ratio (LMR) on postoperative day 1 LMR 1 (p < 0.001). It was shown that the value of the indices based on the ROC curve-NMR1 > 29.29, NMR1-0 > 22.71, and LMR1 > 1.74 (respectively: AUC = 0.624; 95% CI 0.566-0.682; and p < 0.001/AUC = 0.622; 95% CI 0.563-0.680; and p < 0.001/AUC = 0.610; 95% CI 0.550-0.670; and p < 0.001)-can be used to identify recipients with a significant probability of DGF. CONCLUSIONS: the NMR and LMR parameters on the first postoperative day and the difference between the NMR values on the first post-transplant day and the first pre-transplant day are predictive factors associated with the risk of DGF.

ABSTRACT

Among composites, we can distinguish periodic structures, biperiodic structures, and structures with a functional gradation of material properties made of two or more materials. The selection of the composite's constituent materials and the way they are distributed affects the weight of the composite, its strength, and other properties, as well as the way it conducts heat. This work is about studying the temperature distribution in composites, depending on the type of component material and its location. For this purpose, the Tolerance Averaging Technique and the Finite Difference Method were used. Differential equations describing heat conduction phenomena were obtained using the Tolerance Averaging Technique, while the Finite Difference Method was used to solve them. In terms of results, temperature distribution plots were produced showing the effect of the structure of the composite on the heat transfer properties.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find out the psychological factor characteristic of non-adherence patients. The study population comprised kidney transplant recipients aged between 18 and 82 years at least 3 months post-transplant who voluntarily agreed to answer a couple of fully anonymous questionnaires that questions pertaining to basic data, type of immunosuppressive drugs taken, and standardized questionnaires. Participants were recruited using direct routine, free-of-charge visits to specialist doctors in transplant clinics. There was no significant difference in the percentage of men and women in both adherence and non-adherence groups. Non-adherence patients were significantly younger compared to adherence patients. There was also a significant difference in the patient's level of education. Adherence patients were better educated. No significant differences in criteria such as place of residence, having children or a partner, or way of living were observed. However, the emotion scale correlated negatively with the level of life orientation in both groups, but the level of the emotions scale and distractions subscale was negatively correlated with the level of self-esteem only for the adherence group. In future research, it would be worthwhile to focus on lifestyle and health-promoting behaviors in juxtaposition with the propensity for adherence.

ABSTRACT

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a predominant subtype and treatment may include immunotherapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. Tumors of bigger size infiltrating large bronchi and vessels require more invasive resection such as pneumonectomy. To save lung parenchyma, sleeve lobectomy can be performed in certain patients.We report the case of a patient with NSCLC infiltrating the chest wall who underwent arterial sleeve lobectomy with rib resection. Furthermore, we discuss other surgical treatment strategies.A 58-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital in 2020 with pain in her left posterolateral chest. Radiological imaging revealed a tumor (5.0×3.5×4.8 cm) in the top of the left lung, infiltrating pulmonary artery and ribs. Therefore, left upper sleeve lobectomy together with resection of rib blocks II to V was performed. The surgery was uncomplicated, but a few weeks postoperatively, the patient experienced repeated episodes of consciousness disturbances. Contrast CT revealed a cerebral malformation in the patient who died 3.5 months after surgery.Sleeve lobectomy can be safely performed in patients with lung tumors infiltrating larger bronchi and vessels who would not tolerate pneumonectomy.

ABSTRACT

Periodontitis is a common disorder affecting the bone and soft tissues of the periodontal complex. When untreated, it may lead to severe mobility or even loss of teeth. The pathogenesis of periodontitis is complex, with crucial factors being chronic inflammation in gingival and periodontal tissues and oral microbiome alterations. However, recent studies highlight the alleged role of vitamins, such as vitamin C (VitC) and vitamin D (VitD), in the development of the disease. VitC regulates numerous biochemical reactions, but foremost, it is involved in synthesizing collagen. It was reported that VitC deficiency could lead to damage to the periodontal ligaments. VitC supplementation improves postoperative outcomes in patients with periodontitis. VitD is a steroid derivative that can be produced in the skin under ultraviolet radiation and later transformed into an active form in other tissues, such as the kidneys. VitD was established to decrease the expression of proinflammatory cytokines in gingiva and regulate the proper mineral density of teeth. Moreover, the supplementation of VitD was associated with better results in the nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis. In this review, we summarize recent knowledge on the role of vitamins C and D in the pathogenesis and treatment of periodontitis.

ABSTRACT

Psoriasis is a chronic and immune-mediated skin condition characterized by pro-inflammatory cytokines and keratinocyte hyperproliferation. Dendritic cells, T lymphocytes, and keratinocytes represent the main cell subtypes involved in the pathogenesis of psoriasis, while the interleukin-23 (IL-23)/IL-17 pathway enhances the disease progression. Human adipose tissue is an endocrine organ, which secretes multiple proteins, known as adipokines, such as adiponectin, leptin, visfatin, or resistin. Current evidence highlights the immunomodulatory roles of adipokines, which may contribute to the progression or suppression of psoriasis. A better understanding of the complexity of psoriasis pathophysiology linked with adipokines could result in developing novel diagnostic or therapeutic strategies. This review aims to present the pathogenesis of psoriasis and the roles of adipokines in this process.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus pandemic, the wearing of masks has become a common phenomenon. Most of the undesirable effects of using a protective face covering are usually related to the prolonged time of its wearing, and the adverse consequences of face coverings should be considered two-fold. The aim of the study was to evaluate the rate of contamination of the three types of face coverings (surgical, N95, and FFP2 masks) with the microorganism-aerobic bacteria, yeasts, and molds-after the 3 h exposure time. The study aimed to investigate the effects of wearing FFP2 masks (KN95) on respiratory function and the acid-base balance of the human body. RESULTS: The presence of S. aureus was confirmed in both nasal carriers and non-carriers which may demonstrate the cross-contamination and spread of this bacterium via hands. S. aureus was found on external and internal surfaces of face masks of each type, and therefore could also be transmitted via hands from external sources. The 3 h exposure time is not sufficient for Gram-negative rods and mold contamination. Moreover, there were no significant differences in most of the parameters studied between the first and second examinations, both in spirometry and capillary blood gas analysis (p > 0.05).

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze the strategies and styles of coping with stress and self-esteem in patients diagnosed with prostate cancer. One hundred and five patients with prostate cancer participated in the study. Coping strategies were assessed with the Mini-Cope questionnaire, coping styles were assessed with the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations, and self-esteem was assessed with the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Patients' self-esteem and stress coping styles and strategies were analyzed using a Pearson correlation analysis. A stepwise linear regression analysis was performed to determine the predictors of self-esteem. The self-esteem level was positively related to the task-focused style (r = 0.228) and negatively related to the emotion-focused style (r = −0.329). The self-esteem level was significantly positively related to the strategies of active coping (r = 0.358), planning (r = 0.355), and seeking emotional support (r = 0.319) and was negatively related to self-blaming (r = −0.448) and to substance use (r = −0.301). The predictors of self-esteem level were: the strategies of self-blaming, planning, and the support-seeking dimension (F(3, 95) = 17.65; p < 0.001), explaining 33.8% of the variability in subjects' self-esteem level. The moderating effect of age occurred in patients up to 65 years; it was statistically insignificant in patients older than 65 years. Replacement of the self-blame strategy and the emotion-focused style may lead to higher self-esteem of patients. The level of self-esteem can predict the strategies of self-blaming, planning, and the dimension of seeking support. For patients up to 65 years, psychological support should include reinforcement of adaptive forms of coping.

ABSTRACT

Denoising videos in real-time is critical in many applications, including robotics and medicine, where varying-light conditions, miniaturized sensors, and optics can substantially compromise image quality. This work proposes the first video denoising method based on a deep neural network that achieves state-of-the-art performance on dynamic scenes while running in real-time on VGA video resolution with no frame latency. The backbone of our method is a novel, remarkably simple, temporal network of cascaded blocks with forward block output propagation. We train our architecture with short, long, and global residual connections by minimizing the restoration loss of pairs of frames, leading to a more effective training across noise levels. It is robust to heavy noise following Poisson-Gaussian noise statistics. The algorithm is evaluated on RAW and RGB data. We propose a denoising algorithm that requires no future frames to denoise a current frame, reducing its latency considerably. The visual and quantitative results show that our algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance among efficient algorithms, achieving from two-fold to two-orders-of-magnitude speed-ups on standard benchmarks for video denoising.

ABSTRACT

This note deals with the heat conduction issue in biperiodic composites made of two different materials. To consider such a nonuniform structure, the equations describing the behavior of the composite under thermal (Robin) boundary conditions were averaged by using tolerance modelling. In this note, the process of creating an algorithm that uses the finite difference method to deal with averaged model equations is shown. This algorithm can be used to solve these equations and find out the temperature field distribution of a biperiodic composite.

ABSTRACT

This article presents a new approach to the estimation of shift and rotation between two images from different kinds of imaging sensors. The first of the image is an orthophotomap that is created using optical sensors with georeference information. The second one is created utilizing a Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor.The proposed solution can be mounted on a flying platform, and, during the flight, the obtained SAR images are compared with the reference optical images, and thus it is possible to calculate the shift and rotation between these two images and then the direct georeferencing error. Since both images have georeference information, it is possible to calculate the navigation correction in cases when the drift of the calculated trajectory is expected. The method can be used in platforms where there is no satellite navigation signal and the trajectory is calculated on the basis of an inertial navigation system, which is characterized by a significant error. The proposed method of estimating the navigation error utilizing Affine Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (ASIFT) and Structure from Motion (SfM) is described, and techniques for improving the quality of SAR imaging using despeckling filters are presented. The methodology was tested and verified using real-life SAR images. Differences between the results obtained for a few selected despeckling methods were compared and commented on. Deep investigation of the nature of the SAR imaging technique and noise creation character allows new algorithms to be developed, which can be implemented on flying platforms to support existing navigation systems in which trajectory error occurs.

ABSTRACT

We aim to answer a question: how does the geological setting affect flood dynamics in lowland alluvial rivers? The study area covers three river reaches: not trained, relatively large on the European scale, flowing in broad valleys cut in the landscape of old glacial plains. We focus on the locations where levees [both: a) natural or b) artificial] were breached during flood. In these locations we identify (1) the erosional traces of flood (crevasse channels) on the floodplain displayed on DEM derived from ALS LIDAR. In the main river channel, we perform drillings in order to measure the depth of the suballuvial surface and to locate (2) the protrusions of bedrock resistant to erosion. We juxtapose on one map: (1) the floodplain geomorphology with (2) the geological data from the river channel. The results from each of the three study reaches are presented on maps prepared in the same manner in order to enable a comparison of the regularities of fluvial processes written in (1) the landscape and driven by (2) the geological setting. These processes act in different river reaches: (a) not embanked and dominated by ice jam floods, (b) embanked and dominated by rainfall and ice jam floods. We also analyse hydrological data to present hydrodynamic descriptions of the flood. Our principal results indicate similarity of (1) distinctive erosional patterns and (2) specific geological features in all three study reaches. We draw the conclusion: protrusions of suballuvial bedrock control the flood dynamics in alluvial rivers. It happens in both types of rivers. In areas where the floodplain remains natural, the river inundates freely during every flood. In other areas the floodplain has been reclaimed by humans who constructed an artificial levee system, which protects the flood-prone area from inundation, until levee breach occurs.
