ABSTRACT

Hanseniellachilensis is the only myriapod of the class Symphyla known from Chile. This garden centipede, or pseudocentipede, was described more than 120 years ago based on morphologically incomplete specimens collected in central Chile, a well-known biodiversity hotspot. In this study, we redescribe this species based on morphologically complete specimens collected near the type locality using scanning electron microscope images. Our study provides the description of diagnostic characters hitherto unknown in this species such as macrochaetae of the tergites and spinnerets of the cerci. We also include a new record from central Chile and discuss the presumed presence of this species in Argentina and Madagascar.

ABSTRACT

A new species of amphipod of the family Ischyroceridae is described. Isaeopsis chiloensis n. sp. was discovered in association with the cancrid species Metacarcinus edwardsii and Romaleon setosum, in the inner sea around Chiloé Island, in Southern Chile. This represents the second species of the genus Isaeopsis, a group formerly known only from South African waters.                The new species is characterized principally by the structure of the gnathopods, the propodus of pereopods 3-7 and the ornamentation of the outer ramus of uropod 3. The male gnathopod 2 has a prominent thumb in the posteroproximal margin of the propodus and the pereopods 3-7 are subchelate with the palm armed by a row of at least five strong setae. In addition, the apex of the outer ramus of uropod 3 bears a comb with more than thirty fine teeth. Isaeopsis chiloensis n. sp. is completely described and a series of illustrations is provided.

ABSTRACT

Material collected by the Norwegian Scientific Expedition to Tristan Da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean in the years 1937-1938 and later attributed by Stephensen, 1949 to Orchestia scutigerula Dana, 1852 has been re-examined and is described as a new genus and species, Gondwanorchestia tristanensis sp. nov. Orchestia scutigerula Dana, 1852 is transferred to Gondwanorchestia gen nov. and compared with G. tristanensis sp. nov.

ABSTRACT

The marine ecosystem of the Chilean Patagonia is considered structurally and functionally unique, because it is the transition area between the Antarctic climate and the more temperate Pacific region. However, due to its remoteness, there is little information about Patagonian marine biodiversity, which is a problem in the face of the increasing anthropogenic activity in the area. The aim of this study was to analyze community patterns and environmental characteristics of scavenging crustaceans in the Chilean Patagonian Sea, as a basis for comparison with future situations where these organisms may be affected by anthropogenic activities. These organisms play a key ecological role in marine ecosystems and constitute a main food for fish and dolphins, which are recognized as one of the main tourist attractions in the study area. We sampled two sites (Puerto Cisnes bay and Magdalena sound) at four different bathymetric strata, recording a total of 14 taxa that included 7 Decapoda, 5 Amphipoda, 1 Isopoda and 1 Leptostraca. Taxon richness was low, compared to other areas, but similar to other records in the Patagonian region. The crustacean community presented an evident differentiation between the first stratum (0-50 m) and the deepest area in Magdalena sound, mostly influenced by Pseudorchomene sp. and a marked environmental stratification. This species and Isaeopsis sp. are two new records for science. The discovery of undescribed species evidences that this region needs further studies exploring its biodiversity, which is most likely being already impacted by anthropogenic pressure.

ABSTRACT

The first Chilean species of Bogidiellid amphipod, Patagongidiella wefkoi n. sp., is described from freshwater springs in the Osorno Province, Los Lagos Region. The new taxon is characterized principally by the structure of the hypertrophied facial robust seta present on the peduncle of male uropod 1, and the modified dimorphic setae on the exopod of male pleopod 2. The new species is described and illustrated and its morphological relationships with the other species of this group are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The first species of falklandellid amphipod outside the Falkland Islands: Osornodella gabrielae n. gen., n. sp. is described from freshwaters of subterranean origin in the Coastal Range of Osorno province, Chile. The new taxon is characterized principally by the absence of secondary sexual characters in pereopods 3-4, uropod 3 aequiramous and telson slightly cleft. The new species is described and illustrated and its morphological relationships with other known species of this group are discussed.
