ABSTRACT

China's massive wave of urbanization may be threatened by land subsidence. Using a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar interferometry technique, we provided a systematic assessment of land subsidence in all of China's major cities from 2015 to 2022. Of the examined urban lands, 45% are subsiding faster than 3 millimeters per year, and 16% are subsiding faster than 10 millimeters per year, affecting 29 and 7% of the urban population, respectively. The subsidence appears to be associated with a range of factors such as groundwater withdrawal and the weight of buildings. By 2120, 22 to 26% of China's coastal lands will have a relative elevation lower than sea level, hosting 9 to 11% of the coastal population, because of the combined effect of city subsidence and sea-level rise. Our results underscore the necessity of enhancing protective measures to mitigate potential damages from subsidence.

ABSTRACT

The interaction between cadmium(Cd) and copper(Cu) during combined pollution can lead to more complex toxic effects on humans and plants.However, there is still a lack of sufficient understanding regarding the types of interactions at the plant molecular level and the response strategies of plants to combined pollution. To assess this, we investigated the phenotypic and transcriptomic patterns of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L) roots in response to individual and combined pollution of Cd and Cu. The results showed that compared to single addition, the translocation factor of heavy metals in roots significantly decreased (p < 0.05) under the combined addition, resulting in higher accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots. Transcriptomic analysis of pakchoi roots revealed that compared to single pollution, there were 312 and 1926 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) specifically regulated in the Cd2Cu20 and Cd2Cu100 combined treatments, respectively. By comparing the expression of these DEGs among different treatments, we found that the combined pollution of Cd and Cu mainly affected the transcriptome of the roots in an antagonistic manner. Enrichment analysis indicated that pakchoi roots upregulated the expression of genes involved in glucosetransferase activity, phospholipid homeostasis, proton transport, and the biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids to resist Cd and Cu combined pollution. Using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), we identified hub genes related to the accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots, which mainly belonged to the LBD, thaumatin-like protein, ERF, MYB, WRKY, and TCP transcription factor families. This may reflect a transcription factor-driven trade-off strategy between heavy metal accumulation and growth in pakchoi roots. Additionally, compared to single metal pollution, the expression of genes related to Nramp, cation/H+ antiporters, and some belonging to the ABC transporter family in the pakchoi roots was significantly upregulated under combined pollution. This could lead to increased accumulation of Cd and Cu in the roots. These findings provide new insights into the interactions and toxic mechanisms of multiple metal combined pollution at the molecular level in plants.

ABSTRACT

Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are both enriched in soil-vegetable systems as a consequence of the prolonged use of agricultural mulches. MPs can form unique bacterial communities and provide potential hosts for ARGs. Therefore, MPs stress may promote the spread of ARGs from soil to crops. Increasing ARGs pollution in soil-vegetable system. In our research, we investigated the distribution and major driving elements of antibiotic resistance genes in the soil-vegetable system under microplastic stress. The results showed that MPs treatment decreased the relative abundance of ARGs in non-rhizosphere soil. High concentrations of MPs promoted the enrichment of tetracycline antibiotic resistance genes in rhizosphere soil. MPs treatment promoted the enrichment of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in lettuce tissues, and the overall abundance of ARGs in root after 0.5 %, 1 %, and 2 % (w/w, dry weight) polyethylene (PE) administration was considerably higher compared to that in the untreated group (p < 0.05). At the same time, high PE concentrations promoted the spread of sulfa ARGs from root to leaf. MPs also impacted the bacterial communities in the soil-plant system, and the changes in ARGs as well as MGEs in each part of the soil-vegetable system were significantly correlated with the bacterial diversity index (p < 0.05). Correlation analysis and network analysis showed that bacterial communities and MGEs were the main drivers of ARGs variation in soil-lettuce systems.

ABSTRACT

Parabens (PBs), a class of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), are extensively used as additives in personal care products (PCPs); however, distinguishing between endogenous and exogenous contamination from PCPs in hair remains a challenge. We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the levels, distribution patterns, impact factors, and sources of PBs in 119 human hair samples collected from Changchun, northeast China. The detection rates of methylparaben (MeP), propylparaben (PrP), and ethylparaben (EtP) in hair samples were found to be 100%. The concentration of PBs in hair followed the order of MeP (57.48 ng/g) > PrP (46.40 ng/g) > EtP (6.80 ng/g). The concentration of PrP in female hair was significantly higher (65.38 ng/g) than that observed in male hair (7.82 ng/g) (p < 0.05). The levels of excretion rates of MeP (ERMeP) and excretion rates of PrP (ERPrP) in the hair-dying samples (ERMeP: 17.89 ng/day; ERPrP: 14.15 ng/day) were found to be 2.52 and 2.40 times higher, respectively, compared to the non-hair-dying samples (ERMeP: 7.09 ng/day; ERPrP: 6.05 ng/day). However, the system exposure dosage (SED) results revealed that although hair dyes exhibited higher PBs, human exposure was found to be lower than certain PCPs. The results of the correlation analysis revealed that toner, face cream, body lotion, and hair conditioner were identified as the primary sources of PBs in male hair. Furthermore, the human exposure resulting from the utilization of female hair dye and serum exhibited a positive correlation with hair ERMeP and ERPrP levels, indicating in the screening of samples, excluding hair samples using hair dye and haircare essential oil can effectively avoid the interference caused by exogenous contamination from PCPs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mammals are potential hosts for many infectious diseases. However, studies on the viral communities of herbivorous mammals in the Northwest Plateau are limited. Here, we studied the viral communities of herbivorous mammals in the Northwest Plateau using virus metagenomic analysis to analyze and compare the viral community composition of seven animal species. RESULTS: By library construction and next-generation sequencing, contigs and singlets reads with similar viral sequences were classified into 24 viral families. Analyzed from the perspective of sampling areas, the virus community composition was relatively similar in two areas of Wuwei and Jinchang, Gansu Province. Analyzed from the perspective of seven animal species, the viral reads of seven animal species were mostly ssDNA and dominated by CRESS-DNA viruses. Phylogenetic analysis based on viral marker genes indicated that CRESS-DNA viruses and microviruses have high genetic diversity. In addition to DNA viruses, nodaviruses, pepper mild mottle viruses and picornaviruses were RNA viruses that we performed by phylogenetic analysis. The CRESS-DNA viruses and nodaviruses are believed to infect plants and insects, and microviruses can infect bacteria, identifying that they were likely from the diet of herbivorous mammals. Notably, two picornaviruses were identified from red deer and wild horse, showing that the picornavirus found in red deer had the relatively high similarity with human hepatitis A virus, and the picornavirus carried by wild horse could potentially form a new species within the Picornaviridae family. CONCLUSIONS: This study explored the herbivorous mammalian virus community in the Northwest Plateau and the genetic characteristics of viruses that potentially threaten human health. It reveals the diversity and stability of herbivorous mammalian virus communities in the Northwest Plateau and helps to expand our knowledge of various herbivorous mammalian potentially pathogenic viruses.

The evolvement and development of antibiotic resistance in microorganisms may be influenced by metals; however, it is still unclear how cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) combined affect the distribution and presence of antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) in rhizosphere soil. The aims of this research were to (1) compare the distribution patterns of bacterial communities and ARGs in response to the effects of Cd and Cu both separately and combined; (2) explore the possible mechanisms underlying the variation in soil bacterial communities and ARGs in addition to the combined effects of Cd, Cu, and various environmental variables (nutrients, pH, etc.); and (3) provide a reference for assessing the risks of metals (Cd and Cu) and ARGs. The findings showed that the multidrug resistance genes acrA and acrB and the transposon gene intI-1 were present in high relative abundance in bacterial communities. Cadmium and Cu had a substantial interaction effect on the abundance of acrA, whereas Cu had a notable main effect on the abundance of intI-1. According to the network analysis, the strong links between bacterial taxa and specific ARGs revealed that most ARGs were hosted by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. According to structural equation modeling, Cd had a larger effect on ARGs than Cu. Compared to previous analyses of ARGs, bacterial community diversity had little effect on ARGs in this study. Overall, the results may have important consequences for determining the possible hazard of soil metals and extend the understanding of how Cd and Cu co-select ARGs in rhizosphere soils.

ABSTRACT

The production of face towels is growing at an annual rate of about 4% in China, reaching 1.13 million tons by 2021. Phthalates (PAEs) are widely used in textiles, and face towels, as an important household textile, may expose people to PAEs via the skin, further leading to health risks. We collected new face towels and analyzed the distribution characterization of PAEs in them. The changes of PAEs were explored in a face towel use experiment and a simulated laundry experiment. Based on the use of face towels by 24 volunteers, we calculated the estimated daily intake (EDI) and comprehensively assessed the hazard quotient (HQ), hazard index (HI), and dermal cancer risk (DCR) of PAEs exposure in the population. ABSTRACT

Hydraulic retention time (HRT), as an important parameter in the wastewater treatment process, has a great impact on water quality and energy consumption. With the rapid advances in computer technology and deepened understanding of in microbial metabolism, a series of activated sludge models (ASMs) have been developed and applied in wastewater treatment. However, ASMs simulation based on the nexus of HRT, water treatment process, water quality and energy consumption has yet to be verified. In this study, HRT was creatively linked to water treatment process variation. And a novel combined process model (CPM) was developed based on the operational data and treatment performance data from 4 full-scale coking wastewater treatment processes. In the CPM, an array of biological treatment processes were represented by setting the HRT in respective treatment units of the anaerobic-oxic-hydrolytic & denitrification-oxic (A/O/H/O) process. The relationships between HRT, effluent quality and energy consumption were systematically analyzed. Results showed that: (i) for A/O/H/O process, the HRT of first oxic (O1) reactor has a key effect on the effluent water quality and energy consumption, while the impact of the anaerobic (A) reactor HRT was limited; (ii) the O/H/O process has a clear advantage in treating coking wastewater due to the carbon removal and detoxification function of O1 reactor; (iii) the lowest energy consumption (with the total system HRT below 210 h) to meet the biological effluent quality requirements (COD = 200 mg/L, TN = 50 mg/L) is 4.429 kWh/m3. Since the CPM could effectively work out the optimal process configuration and break the boundaries between HRT and process variation, it has enormous potential to be extended to the design of other wastewater treatment processes.

In this study, physicochemical pre- and post-treatment of highly polluting coking wastewater (CWW) for the removal of refractory compounds and recovery of high-energy substances/components was investigated. An economic optimization model targeting the development of a cost-effective and sustainable treatment technology was proposed. At the post-treatment stage, powdered activated carbon (PAC) was used to separate the refractory and toxic pollutants from the bio-treated CWW, with the adsorption capacity ranging from 50 to 120 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD) g-1 PAC. Then, the spent PAC, together with a coagulant, was reused in the pre-treatment of highly concentrated raw CWW, which lifted the adsorption capacity to 800-1200 mg COD g-1 PAC. Results showed that the adsorbent's high selectivity towards macromolecular and complicated pollutants could remove 25-65 % of COD in both CWW flows. Analysis of pollutants' molecular weight distribution and GC-MS indicated a good affinity between PAC and high-energy pollutants (phenolic compounds and alkanes), which could transfer 144,555 kJ m-3 of energy from CWW to the adsorption-coagulation sludge. The economic optimization model suggested that the cost of the adsorbent was compensated by the net benefits of energy recovery and that profit was achieved when the PAC price was less than 5562 CNY t-1. The proposed two-stage PAC/coagulant approach offers a way to sustainable water quality and sludge management, plus energy recycling, in CWW treatment. It may also be applied to the treatment of other industrial wastewaters.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic performance of the Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) Liver Imaging Report and Data System (LI-RADS) v2016 and v2017 in identifying the origin of tumor in vein (TIV). METHODS: From April 2014 to December 2018, focal liver lesions (FLLs) accompanied by TIV formation in patients at high risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were enrolled. Histologic evaluation or composite imaging reference standard were served as the reference standard. Each case was categorized according to the CEUS LI-RADS v2016 and v2017, respectively. Diagnostic performance of CEUS LI-RADS v2016 and v2017 in identifying the originated tumor of TIV was validated via sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value. RESULTS: A total of 273 FLLs with TIV were analyzed finally, including 266 HCCs and 7 non-HCCs. In v2016, when adopting all TIV as LR-5V, the accuracy and PPV in identifying the originated tumor were both 97.4%. In v2017, when assigning TIV according to contiguous FLLs CEUS LI-RADS category, the accuracy and PPV were 61.9% and 99.4% in subclass of LR-5 as the diagnostic criteria of HCC, and 64.1% and 99.4% in subclass of LR-4/5 as the criteria of HCC diagnosis. There were significant differences in diagnostic accuracy between CEUS LI-RADS v2016 and v2017 in identifying the originated tumor of TIV (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: CEUS LI-RADS v2016 could be better than v2017 in identifying the originated tumor of TIV.

ABSTRACT

Systematically analyzing the problem of heavy metals in the municipal sludge, a meta-analysis of nine metals was undertaken to distinguish the sources and sinks of those with the impact of their accumulation on the environment. Municipal sludge was rich in N, P and K nutrients, was found to contain heavy metals comprising the descending order Zn > Mn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Ni > As > Cd > Hg. The forms, in which heavy metals accumulated in geographical regions, were characterized. The geographical distribution of heavy metals in the sludge showed a significant difference, with higher accumulation in Eastern and Southern regions, however, the risk evaluations showed the higher risk of heavy metals accumulation in Eastern and Western regions. Agricultural, industrial and traffic activities, and storm water pipeline sediments were identified as the main sources of heavy metals in the sludge. The correlation analysis elucidated the role of the total organic carbon in the accumulation of heavy metals in sludge. Municipal sludge is endowed with resource properties due to the detection of heavy metal contents thresholds in household products and its own resource-attributable enrichment behavior, which requires deduction of environmental risks.

ABSTRACT

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced in the ischemic myocardium can induce cardiomyocyte injury and death, resulting in cardiac remodeling. Ferroptosis, known as a newly type of cell death caused by iron-dependent oxidative stress, which is an essential death mechanism in cardiomyocytes. However, it is unclear whether oxidative stress products can further induce ferroptosis and aggravate cardiomyocyte injury. Geniposide (GEN), a major active component of Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis, possesses the natural antioxidant activity and cardioprotective effect. Herein, we evaluated the role of ferroptosis in myocardial oxidative injury and the protective effect of GEN on myocardial ferroptosis. We first detected iron overload, massive ROS, and lipid peroxidation in ferric ammonium citrate (FAC)-treated cardiomyocytes, which were typical characteristics of ferroptosis. The iron overload-induced oxidative stress and ferroptosis aggravated cardiomyocyte injury, which were significantly alleviated by GEN treatment. Similar phenotypic changes of ferroptosis were consistently discovered in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced cells, which were reversed by GEN treatment as well. Interestingly, the RNA-binding protein Grsf1, which directly upregulated Gpx4 at the translational level, was activated by GEN following myocardial oxidative injury. The specific knockdown of Grsf1 increased their sensitivity to ferroptosis and weakened the cardioprotective effect of GEN in H2O2-treated cardiomyocytes. Moreover, GEN treatment reduced iron overload and lipid peroxidation in myocardial infarction (MI) rats, thereby fighting against the cardiac ischemic injury. Collectively, our study revealed the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and ferroptosis associated with myocardial ischemia, and indicated the antioxidant and anti-ferroptosis effects of GEN on preventing myocardial injury by activating the Grsf1/GPx4 axis, serving as a potential therapeutic target.

The gut virome is a reservoir of diverse symbiotic and pathogenic viruses coevolving with their hosts, and yet limited research has explored the gut viromes of highland-dwelling rare species. Using viral metagenomic analysis, the viral communities of the Phrynocephalus lizards living in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau were investigated. Phage-encoded functional genes and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) were analyzed. The viral communities of different lizard species were all predominated by bacteriophages, especially the Caudovirales order. The virome of Phrynocephalus erythrurus living around the Namtso Lake possessed a unique structure, with the greatest abundance of the Parvoviridae family and the highest number of exclusive viral species. Several vertebrate-infecting viruses were discovered, including caliciviruses, astroviruses, and parvoviruses. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that the virus hallmark genes of bacteriophages possessed high genetic diversity. After functional annotation, the majority of phage-associated functional genes were classified in the energy metabolism category. In addition, plenty of ARGs belonging to the multidrug category were discovered, and five ARGs were exclusive to the virome from Phrynocephalus theobaldi. This study provided the first insight into the structure and function of the virome in highland lizards, contributing to the protection of threatened lizard species. Also, our research is of exemplary significance for the gut virome research of lizard species and other cold-blooded and highland-dwelling animals, prompting a better understanding of the interspecific differences and transmission of commensal viruses. IMPORTANCE The Phrynocephalus lizards inhabiting the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) are considered to be the highest-altitude lizard species in the world, and they have been added to the IUCN list of threatened species. Living in the QTP with hypoxic, arid, natural conditions, the lizards presented a unique pattern of gut virome, which could provide both positive and negative effects, such as the enrichment of functional genes and the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This work provides the foundation for further research on the gut virome in these endangered lizard species and other cold-blooded and highland-dwelling animals, contributing to the maintenance of ecological balance on the plateau.

ABSTRACT

Thirty years ago, the systems ecologist Howard T. Odum introduced the concept of transformity, which is a thermodynamic measure of quality within the trial and error evolutionary dynamics of ecosystems, namely an indicator of rank in the hierarchical system structure of the biosphere. Based on a global database of individual processes and whole economies, this paper extends, refines, and updates Odum's idea, demonstrating the strength of the postulated relation. In particular, an inverse linear logarithmic relationship is shown to hold between resource quantity (exergy) and quality (emergy), which is the result of an overall energetic efficiency characteristic of energy transformation processes of the biosphere. This relation extends from natural renewable energy sources to human information (including global internet data flows) and know-how embedded in national economies, thus identifying a consistent theory of hierarchical organization of the biosphere grounded in energetics and ultimately setting constraints to illusions of unlimited growth.

OBJECTIVES: To validate the efficacy of contrast-enhanced ultrasound Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (CEUS LI-RADS) and its major features in diagnosing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) of different sizes in high-risk patients. METHODS: Between January 2014 and December 2015, a total of 545 untreated liver nodules were included. These liver nodules were divided into two groups (<20 mm and ≥20 mm). Each nodule was classified based on CEUS LI-RADS. The diagnostic performance comparison was assessed by the chi-square test, with pathology results as the golden criterion. RESULTS: The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV) of CEUS LR-5 criteria in <20 mm group vs ≥20 mm group in diagnosing HCC were 60.5% vs 59.8%, 55.6% vs 57.6%, 85.7% vs 88.6 and 95.2% vs 98.5%, respectively, without significant difference (all p > 0.05). The accuracy, sensitivity and PPV of LR5/M for malignancy in <20 mm group were lower than in ≥20 mm group, with values of 79.1% vs 95.0%, 84.2% vs 95.7 and 91.4% vs 99.2%, respectively (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The CEUS LI-RADS has a comparable performance for diagnosing HCC between lesions ≥ 20 mm and <20 mm. ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the influence of pathological factors, such as fibrosis stage and histological grade, on the Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) v2017 category of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in patients with high risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between June 2015 and December 2016, 441 consecutive patients at high risk of HCC with 460 pathologically proven HCCs were enrolled in this retrospective study. All patients underwent a CEUS examination. The major features (arterial phase hyperenhancement, late and mild washout) were assessed, and LI-RADS categories were assigned according to CEUS LI-RADS v2017. CEUS LI-RADS categories and major features were compared in different histological grades and fibrosis stages. RESULTS: The CEUS LR-5 category was more frequently assigned in the low-grade group (151/280) than in the high-grade group (66/159) (p = 0.013), whereas the LR-TIV category was more frequently assigned in the high-grade group (36/159) than in the low-grade group (40/280) (p = 0.035). CEUS LI-RADS category was not significantly different among different fibrosis stages (p ≥ 0.05). Arterial phase hyperenhancement (APHE) and the hepatic fibrosis stage showed a significant correlation in HCCs ≥ 2 cm and the low-grade group (p = 0.027 and p = 0.003, respectively). No major features of CEUS LI-RADS showed statistically significant differences between the low- and high-grade groups (p ≥ 0.05). CONCLUSION: Hepatic fibrosis stage can influence APHE but showed no impact on the CEUS LI-RADS classification, whereas the histological grade of HCC influenced the LR-5 and LR-TIV categories. KEY POINTS: • Histological grade influenced CEUS LR-5 and LR-TIV category (p = 0.013 and p = 0.035 respectively). Low-grade HCCs occurred more frequently in LR-5 category whereas high-grade HCCs occurred more frequently in LR-TIV category. • Fibrosis stage shows significant influence on APHE on HCCs of the size ≥ 2 cm and low-grade group (p = 0.027 and p = 0.003, respectively). • Hepatic fibrosis stage and HCC histological grade exhibited limited impact on CEUS LI-RADS. CEUS LI-RADS may be feasible for diagnosing HCC in patients regardless of histological grade and fibrosis stage.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Large cohort studies provide conflicting evidence regarding the prognostic value of early repolarization pattern (ERP) in the general population, complicated by the complex or heterogeneous definitions of ERP applied in different studies. HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that ERP was associated with increased cardiovascular risk with the definition of ERP recommended by the expert consensus statements. METHODS: A total of 13673 middle-aged subjects from the prospective, population-based Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study were included in this analysis. Cox models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) adjusted for possible confounding factors. ERP was defined as ST-segment elevation ≥0.1mV at the end of the QRS or J wave on the QRS downstroke in two or more contiguous leads. RESULTS: Compared with those without ERP, subjects with ERP had a significantly increased risk of developing sudden cardiac death (SCD) (HR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.08-2.04) and death from coronary heart disease (CHD) (HR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.10-1.92) after a median follow-up of 20.1 years. ERP was significantly predictive of SCD in females, whites, younger people, and subjects with relatively low cardiovascular risk. ERP with ST-segment elevation appeared to indicate poor cardiovascular outcomes. ERP was associated with an absolute risk increase of 93.3 additional SCDs per 100 000 person-years. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that ERP was an independent predictor of SCD and CHD death in the middle-aged biracial population.

ABSTRACT

Here, we investigated the fecal, oral, blood, and skin virome of 10 laboratory rabbits using a viral metagenomic method. In the oral samples, we detected a novel polyomavirus (RabPyV), and phylogenetic analysis based on the large T antigen, VP1 and VP2 regions indicated that the novel strain might have undergone a recombination event. Recombination analysis based on related genomes confirmed that RabPyV is a multiple recombinant between rodent-like and avian-like polyomaviruses. In fecal samples, three partial or complete genome sequences of viruses belonging to the families Picobirnaviridae, Parvoviridae, Microviridae and Coronaviridae were characterized, and phylogenetic trees were constructed based on the predicted amino acid sequences of viral proteins. This study increases the amount of genetic information on viruses present in laboratory rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) results from excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone from parathyroid tumors. Differentiating parathyroid tumors can be challenging before operation. OBJECTIVES: To differentiate parathyroid carcinoma from benign tumors in patients with PHPT by the application of ultrasound and biochemical parameters. METHODS: This study is a retrospective study. The study enrolled 17 patients with parathyroid carcinoma (PC) and 57 patients with parathyroid adenoma (PA), confirmed by postoperative pathology, between September 2010 and July 2017. This study retrospectively compared the ultrasonic features of the tumors included echotexture, maximum lesion diameter, shape, margin, blood flow inside the mass, intralesional calcifications, cysts in the mass, and biochemical parameters included serum calcium, phosphorus, parathyroid hormone (PTH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, gender distribution and age of patients between patients with PC and those with PA. RESULTS: In the US images, the two groups showed significant differences in heterogeneity, the appearance of a taller-than-wide shape, irregular or lobulated margins, and intralesional calcifications (p < #x003C;< #x200A;0.05). However, no significant difference was found in echogenicity, maximum lesion diameter, blood flow, and cystic components of the mass (p > #x003E;> #x200A;0.05). The mean PTH levels were significantly different between the two groups (p < #x003C;< #x200A;0.05). The PC and PA patients did not differ significantly in terms of mean serum calcium, mean serum phosphorus, and mean ALP levels (p > #x003E;> #x200A;0.05). There were significant differences to distinguish PC from PA in calcifications in mass or/and taller-than-wide shape combine with PTH > #x003E;> #x200A;1000 pg/mL (p < #x003C;< #x200A;0.05). Significant difference existed in the age between the two groups (p < #x003C;< #x200A;0.001). No significant difference existed in the gender distribution between the two groups (p > #x003E;> #x200A;0.05). CONCLUSION: Ultrasound features especially intralesional calcifications and taller-than-wide shape combine with an extremely high serum PTH (>1000 pg/mL) are helpful in differentiating between benign and parathyroid tumors in patients with PHPT.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess the value of conventional ultrasound (US), contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and mammography in the diagnosis of breast lesions with calcifications. METHODS: A total of 87 breast lesions with calcification were subjected to US, CEUS and mammography and divided into 3 groups: Group A (all cases), Group A1 (31 cases who underwent US and CEUS first followed by mammography), and Group A2 (56 cases who underwent mammography first followed by US and CEUS). A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of different methods in different groups. RESULTS: In Group A, the area under the ROC curve (AUROC) of CEUS were 0.937, which were significantly higher than that of mammography (p < 0.05). In Group A1, the AUROC of CEUS were 0.842, which were not significantly different from that of US and mammography (p > 0.05). In Group A2, the AUROC of CEUS were 0.987, which were significantly higher than that of mammography and US (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Based on the mammography results, the combination of US and CEUS might improve the diagnostic efficacy in breast lesions with calcification.
