ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The implementation of safety measures in hospitals due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including family visitation restrictions, forced the family to be absent during the patient's hospitalization. Nurses were confronted with new roles and responsibilities, as caring for lonely patients was a new phenomenon that emerged during the pandemic. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the nurses' views on caring for lonely patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: A qualitative research method based on an inductive content analysis approach was used. Data collection was carried out using semi-structured interviews. The sample consisted of 11 nurses who worked in COVID-19 wards and units. Content analysis was used to analyze the interview data. RESULTS: The analysis of the data revealed three main themes: 1) caring for the patient and the family; 2) extending conventional care; and 3) developing supportive mechanisms for better care. Caring for lonely patients brought about changes in patients's management and care and significantly affected communication patterns as well as nurses' roles and responsibilities. Providing care beyond limits, supporting care through the utilization of new technologies, and transforming organization and care were mentioned as areas of challenge for nursing practice.  Conclusions: Maintaining communication and supporting the family's involvement in patient care are considered to be equal to healing for the lonely patient. Reshaping working conditions and caring practices to meet the needs of the nurses, the patients, and their families during health crises may contribute positively to the provision of holistic care for patients and their families.

ABSTRACT

Humans, led by their eternal wish to explore the unknown, have always wanted to perfect their diving skills and conquer the sea world. The adverse conditions experienced by divers brought about medical problems and a new field of medicine. Diving medicine serves the identification, treatment, and precautions against illnesses that are related to diving activities. While the development of diving equipment is advancing, divers have had the chance to reach greater depths for a longer time. Along with this success, a novel medical condition under the term 'decompression illness' (DCI) was introduced. Although the history of hyperbaric medicine is very long, progress in the field of mechanics has offered great contributions to the management of the disease. The first attempt at DCI guidelines was made by the US Navy in 1944-1945 and resulted in the creation of hyperbaric treatment tables. These tools received international recognition, offering a major advance. Hyperbaric-Diving Medicine holds an important place in modern medical science nowadays with indications for various diseases. At the same time, there is great scientific interest and a lot of research in the use of hyperbaric oxygen for several medical disorders, demonstrating great potential.

ABSTRACT

Flexible strain sensors have been subject to intense research efforts in recent years, in an attempt to overcome the limitations of their rigid counterparts and find use in demanding applications. In this work, the effective calibration of resistive-type, stretchable strain sensors is discussed. A new model for the piezoresistive response of stretchable polymer nanocomposite strain sensors is presented which facilitates calibration over the full conducting strain range of the material. This offers the potential to vastly improve the practical working range of sensors made using soft conductive nanocomposites, as well as to obtain key information towards improvement of sensing performance. The model has been successfully applied to multiple experimental measurements on silicone rubber (SR) nanocomposites reinforced with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) over a range of filler loadings. The effect of parameters such as filler dimensions, filler orientation and dispersion state is discussed, while predictions on sensitivity and working range are made on the basis of interparticle distance modelling.

ABSTRACT

Background: Assessing fetal growth constitutes a fundamental aim within the realm of prenatal care. Impaired prenatal growth increases the risk of perinatal mortality, morbidity, and poor newborn outcomes. Growth restriction increases the risk of premature birth problems, as well as the risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes and future non-communicable disorders such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome as adults. The objective of this systematic review is to accumulate current literature evidence to assess the patterns of serum adipokine levels among women with growth-restricted fetuses and assess their potential alterations in those high-risk pregnancies. Methods: Medline, Scopus, CENTRAL, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Google Scholar databases were systematically searched from inception until 31 March 2023. All observational studies reporting serum adipokine values among women with appropriately grown and growth-restricted fetuses were held eligible. Results: The current systematic review encompassed a total of 20 studies, incorporating a patient population of 1850 individuals. Maternal blood leptin emerged as the adipokine most investigated, as evidenced by 13 studies encompassing a collective sample size of 1081 patients, all of which explored its potential correlation with intrauterine growth restriction. Elevated levels of leptin were detected in fetuses with intrauterine growth restriction, although the observed difference did not reach statistical significance. Furthermore, regarding adiponectin, the meta-analysis conducted indicated that there were not any statistically significant differences observed in the mean values of adiponectin. The available data on the remaining three adipokines were extremely limited, making it difficult for any solid conclusions to be extracted. Conclusions: Though limited and inconsistent, the existing data suggest that fetal growth restriction is not linked to leptin, adiponectin, visfatin, resistin, or RBP4. More substantial prospective studies are needed to comprehend the importance of established and novel adipokines.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the awareness and existing knowledge of a portion of the Greek population about prevention, screening, and HPV vaccination. METHODS: A questionnaire designed in Google forms has been distributed through social media between June 2021 and December 2021 in men and women aged > 16 years old. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 20.0 program. Inferential analysis was performed to evaluate differences in responses among men and women. RESULTS: We enrolled 2685 participants. Of those, 2285 were women, 386 were men, while 14 respondents chose not to respond to this question. Various age groups were detected with those aged between 26 and 30 years old being the predominant one. Participants with a higher education constituted 36.5% of the population. Most respondents were married (59.8%). In socioeconomic terms 75.5% of participants were employed whereas, monthly income ranged between 1000 and 1500 euros in the predominant group (36.8%). Only 40% of females and 3.9% of males were vaccinated against HPV. Adolescent immunization, acceptability rates reached 92.7% among female and 82.1% among male responders. Although, only a small proportion of the participants were not aware of the existence of HPV, 24.1% of males and 23.4% of females had the impression that condom use may provide absolute immunity to HPV and only 51.6% of males and 60.4% of females were aware about the high prevalence of HPV in the general population. Logistic regression analysis indicated that male participants as well as those aged > 50 years and those choosing to reject vaccination had decreased knowledge of the basic pathophysiology of HPV infection, as well as knowledge related to the existence and use of HPV DNA as a screening tool and the existence and efficacy of HPV vaccination. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that although awareness of the existence of HPV infection is high in Greek general population, the actual perception of the pathophysiology of transmission and importance of HPV testing and vaccination is low. Targeting specific population groups is essential to help increase HPV coverage and screening.

ABSTRACT

Starch-derived films exhibit significant potential for packaging applications owing to their low cost, biodegradable characteristics, and natural abundance. Nonetheless, there is a demand to enhance their mechanical properties and moisture resistance to broaden their use. In this study, high performing sorbitol-plasticized starch/Ti3C2Tx MXene nanocomposites, reinforced with ultra-low filler contents, were fabricated for the first time in literature. The MXene nanoplatelets were well-dispersed within the starch matrix while there was a tendency for the fillers to align in-plane, as revealed by polarized Raman spectroscopy. The produced nanocomposite films demonstrate remarkable effectiveness in blocking UV light, offering an additional valuable attribute in food packaging. The Young's modulus and tensile strength of starch films containing 0.75 wt% MXene increased from 439.9 and 11.0 MPa to 764.3 and 20.8 MPa, respectively. The introduction of 1 wt% MXene nanoplatelets reduced the water vapour permeability of starch films from 2.78 × 10-7 to 1.80 × 10-7 g/m h Pa due to the creation of highly tortuous paths for water molecules. Micromechanical theories were also implemented to understand further the reinforcing mechanisms in the biobased nanocomposites. The produced starch nanocomposites not only capitalize on the biodegradable and renewable nature of starch but also harness the unique properties of nanomaterials, paving the way for sustainable and high-performance packaging solutions that align with both consumer and environmental demands.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. Cardiovascular diseases are common complications after chemotherapy due to the effect of the drug on lipid levels. This study aimed to explore the changes in lipid profiles in patients with breast cancer under chemotherapy. METHODS: In this prospective study, 50 patients with breast cancer participated. Three biochemical-lipid hematological tests were performed: total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL-C), and Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL-C) before initiation (pre-chemotherapy), at the start (first follow-up), and at the completion (second follow-up) of the first cycle of chemotherapy. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Analyses were conducted using SPSS Statistical Software (version 22.0). RESULTS: Mean TC values increased significantly at second follow-up. TGs values decreased significantly from first to second follow-up. HDL-C was significantly lower at first follow-up compared with pre-chemotherapy and was similar to the pre-chemotherapy levels at second follow-up. LDL-C values were significantly higher at second follow-up compared with pre-chemotherapy measurement. Significantly positive correlations of BMI with pre-chemotherapy LDL-C, first follow-up TC, first follow-up LDL-C, second follow-up TC, and second follow-up LDL-C were found. CONCLUSIONS: There is a statistically significant increase in the levels of TC and LDL-C in breast cancer patients during chemotherapy. This study was not registered.

ABSTRACT

The needs for sustainable development and energy efficient manufacturing are crucial in the development of future composite materials. Out-of-oven (OoO) curing of fiber-reinforced composites based on smart conductive polymers reduces energy consumption and self-regulates the heating temperature with enhanced safety in manufacturing, presenting an excellent example of such energy efficient approaches. However, achieving the desired curing processes, especially for high-performance systems where two-stage curing is often required, remains a great challenge. In this study, a ternary system consisting of graphene nanoplatelets/HDPE/PVDF was developed, with a double positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect achieved to fulfill stable self-regulating heating at two temperatures (120 and 150 °C). Systematic studies on both single and double PTC effects were performed, with morphological analysis to understand their pyroresistive behaviors. Compared to the oven curing process, up to 97% reduction in the energy consumption was achieved by the ternary system, while comparable thermal and mechanical properties were obtained in the carbon fiber/epoxy laminates. This work presents a new route to achieve OoO curing with two-stage self-regulating heating, which can be utilized in many high-performance composite applications.

Although transcatheter aortic valve implantation has emerged as a very attractive treatment option for severe aortic valve disease, surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) is still considered the standard-of-care, particularly in younger patients. However, selecting the appropriate type of valve prosthesis for this patient population can pose challenges. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate morbidity and mortality in patients aged 50-70 years who have undergone a first-time SAVR, and to define and compare the outcomes of mechanical valve (MV) and biological valve (BV) prosthesis. A systematic search was conducted to investigate the clinical outcomes of MVs and BVs in patients aged 50-70 years following the PRISMA guidelines. A total of 16,111 patients were included in the studies with an average follow-up of 10 years. A total of 16 studies were selected, 12 of which included propensity-score-matching (PMS) analysis and 4 of which obtained results via multivariate analysis. The vast majority (13 studies) showed no greater survival benefit in either MVs and BVs, while three studies showed an advantage of MVs over BVs. Regarding complications, bleeding was the most common adverse event in patients undergoing MV replacement, while for patients receiving BV prosthesis, it was structural valve deterioration and reoperation. Although the data suggest that the BV option could be a safe option in patients younger than 70 years, more studies with contemporary data are needed to draw firm conclusions on the risks and benefits of BV or MV in SAVR. Physicians should individualize the surgical plan based on patient characteristics.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with their combination of excellent electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, mechanical robustness and environmental stability are highly desired as thermoelectric (TE) materials for a wide range of fields including Internet of Things, health monitoring and environmental remediation solutions. However, their high thermal conductivity (κ) is an obstacle to practical TE applications. Herein, we present a novel method to reduce the κ of CNT veils, by introducing defects, while preserving their Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Solid-state drawing of a CNT veil embedded within two polycarbonate films generates CNT veil fragments of reducing size with increasing draw ratio. A successive heat treatment, at above the polycarbonate glass-to-rubber transition temperature, spontaneously reconnects the CNT veils fragments electrically but not thermally. Stretching to a draw ratio of 1.5 and heat repairing at 170 °C leads to a dramatic 3.5-fold decrease in κ (from 46 to 13 W m-1 K-1), in contrast with a decrease in electrical conductivity of only 26% and an increase in Seebeck coefficient of 10%. To clarify the mechanism of reduction in thermal conductivity, a large-scale mesoscopic simulation of CNT veils under uniaxial stretching has also been used. This work shows that defect engineering can be a valuable strategy to optimize TE properties of CNT veils and, potentially, other thermoelectric materials.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the epidemiology, reporting characteristics, and adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Overviews of Reviews (PRIOR) statement of overviews of reviews (overviews) of interventions in the cardiovascular field. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: MEDLINE, Scopus, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched from January 1, 2000, to October 15, 2020. An updated search was performed in MEDLINE, Epistemonikos, and Google Scholar up to August 25, 2022. Overviews of interventions published in English and primarily considering populations, interventions, and outcomes pertinent to the cardiovascular field were eligible. Study selection, data extraction, and PRIOR adherence assessment were performed by two authors independently. RESULTS: We analyzed 96 overviews. Almost half (43/96 [45%]) were published between 2020 and 2022 and contained a median of 15 systematic reviews (SRs) (interquartile range, 9-28). The commonest title terminology was "overview of (systematic) reviews" (38/96 [40%]). Methods for handling SR overlap were reported in 24/96 (25%), methods for assessing primary study overlap in 18/96 (19%), handling of discrepant data in 11/96 (11%), and methods for methodological quality or risk of bias assessment of the primary studies within SRs in 23/96 (24%). Authors included data sharing statements in 28/96 (29%), complete funding disclosure in 43/96 (45%), protocol registration in 43/96 (45%), and conflict of interest statement in 82/96 (85%) overviews. CONCLUSION: Insufficient reporting was identified in methodological characteristics unique in overviews' conduct and most transparency markers. Adoption of PRIOR from the research community could ameliorate overviews' reporting.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This large-scale analysis pools individual data about the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) to predict outcome in the intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: A systematic search identified all clinical trials that used the CFS in the ICU (PubMed searched until 24th June 2020). All patients who were electively admitted were excluded. The primary outcome was ICU mortality. Regression models were estimated on the complete data set, and for missing data, multiple imputations were utilised. Cox models were adjusted for age, sex, and illness acuity score (SOFA, SAPS II or APACHE II). RESULTS: 12 studies from 30 countries with anonymised individualised patient data were included (n = 23,989 patients). In the univariate analysis for all patients, being frail (CFS ≥ 5) was associated with an increased risk of ICU mortality, but not after adjustment. In older patients (≥ 65 years) there was an independent association with ICU mortality both in the complete case analysis (HR 1.34 (95% CI 1.25-1.44), p < 0.0001) and in the multiple imputation analysis (HR 1.35 (95% CI 1.26-1.45), p < 0.0001, adjusted for SOFA). In older patients, being vulnerable (CFS 4) alone did not significantly differ from being frail. After adjustment, a CFS of 4-5, 6, and ≥ 7 was associated with a significantly worse outcome compared to CFS of 1-3. CONCLUSIONS: Being frail is associated with a significantly increased risk for ICU mortality in older patients, while being vulnerable alone did not significantly differ. New Frailty categories might reflect its "continuum" better and predict ICU outcome more accurately. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Open Science Framework (OSF: https://osf.io/8buwk/ ).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Determining the time that is required for weaning, as well as the factors that influence it can be used for the appropriate planning of patient's medical and nursing care. The aim of this study is to estimate the optimal time an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patient with tracheostomy needs to wean from mechanical ventilation. METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted on 162 patients from two general hospitals in Athens, Greece.  A specially designed recording form was created to conduct the study. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v.25 for Windows was used to record and analyze the data. The level of statistical significance was set at α=5%. RESULTS: Results were found after comparing and associating the demographic and clinical characteristics and medical history of patients with the duration of weaning, the length of post-tracheostomy ICU stay and the time from intubation to tracheostomy. CONCLUSIONS: According to the results of our study, there are various factors that affect success and duration of weaning. More specifically, there seems to be an association between duration of weaning and age, number of closure attempts, success of closure, time from intubation to tracheostomy, length of the patient's post-tracheostomy ICU stay and diagnosis upon admission. The shorter the duration of weaning, the greater the benefits for the patients themselves, such us avoiding respiratory damage, reduction of mortality and morbidity and preventing of length of patient's ICU stay.

ABSTRACT

The World Health Organization has documented the impact that a balanced diet has on disease prevention. Overconsumption of meat can lead to obesity, arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, type 2 diabetes and many life-threatening diseases. A new group of proteins has currently emerged in the scientific community of alternative nutrition called "alternative proteins". Several interventions have been introduced by a large number of healthcare providers in order to promote and enhance people's dietary habits. Two of the most prevalent models of health-related behaviour modification are the transtheoretical-stages of change-model (TM) and motivational interviewing (MI). The purpose of this study is to research and examine how the ΤΜ and MI could be effectively implemented in the diet of health professionals through alterations of eating habits. The population of the study is to comprise health professionals from «AΤΤΙΚOΝ¼ University General Hospital, Athens, Greece. The sample of participants is to be selected by the professional environment of the researcher. Participants, through random selection, are to be divided into two groups: the control group, consisting of 50 individuals, and the intervention group, consisting of 50 individuals. The duration of the study is to be from November 2022 to November 2024. The present study is concerned with productive mixed-quantitative and qualitative-evolutionary research along with the application testing of both the ΤΜ and the MI. It is to be conducted specifically on health professionals via self-administered questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.

Bivalirudin, an IV direct thrombin inhibitor, and unfractionated heparin (UFH) are frequently used anticoagulants in the pediatric critical care setting. An accurate, specific, point-of-care test to quantify and detect anticoagulation resistance is not currently available. This study evaluates the ability of a rapid (< 10 min), micro-volume (< 50 uL) coagulation test to detect and quantify the anticoagulation effect of bivalirudin and UFH using a functional, clot time endpoint in pediatric critical care patients. DESIGN: Single-site retrospective laboratory sample analysis and chart review. SETTING: A 105-bed pediatric and cardiac ICUs delivering extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. SUBJECTS: Forty-one citrated, frozen, biobanked plasma specimens comprising 21 with bivalirudin and 20 with UFH from 15 anticoagulated pediatric patients were analyzed. Thirteen patients were on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, one had a submassive pulmonary embolism, and one was on a left ventricular assist device. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENT AND MAIN RESULTS: A Clotting Time Score (CTS) was derived on each sample. The CTS detected patients that had developed a pathologic clotting event with 100% sensitivity and 82% specificity compared with prothrombin time with 25% sensitivity/76% specificity and activated partial thromboplastin time with 0% sensitivity/0% specificity. Additionally, the CTS detected subtherapeutic anticoagulation in response to UFH in patients that were clinically determined to be UFH resistant requiring alternative anticoagulation with bivalirudin. CONCLUSIONS: The CTS appears to be a clinically valuable indicator of coagulation status in patients treated with either UFH or bivalirudin. Results outside of the therapeutic range due to inadequate dosing or anticoagulation resistance appeared to be associated with clot formation. CTS testing may reduce the risk of anticoagulation-related complications via the rapid identification of patients at high risk for pathologic thrombotic events.

Quality is a multidimensional issue involving various features that depend on service performance and personal assessment. Clarifying the concept of quality is essential in order to further facilitate the understanding and improvement of quality in healthcare. The purpose of this study was to investigate how clinical nurses, providing care to adult medical patients, perceive and define the concept of quality nursing care. A descriptive qualitative research design was applied. A purposive sampling strategy was used to recruit nurses from the clinical sector of a general public hospital in Athens, Greece. Ten female nurses from the medical sector participated the study. Data collection was conducted through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the verbatim data. Four categories were revealed from the data analysis, namely: (a) "Quality care is holistic care", (b) "Good care is an interpersonal issue", (c) "Leadership is crucial", and (d) "Best care is our responsibility". Quality care was defined as holistic care, addressing all patient needs with competency and aiming for the best patient outcomes. It was associated with communication, teamwork, good leadership, and personal commitment. By developing an in-depth and mutual understanding about what quality means, nurse leaders and practitioners may collaborate in finding common paths to support quality interventions and enhance quality nursing care in clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Caring for people with HIV/AIDS is a challenging issue for nursing students, involving sometimes misconceptions due to different cultural, political and religious views. The aim of this project was to investigate nursing students' attitudes on caring for people with HIV/AIDS. METHODS: A convenient sample of undergraduate nursing students enrolled in four European universities was recruited. Data were collected by administering the AIDS Attitude Scale (AAS). Statistical analysis included the ANOVA test, the t-test for independent variables, and the Kruskal-Wallis test with a confidence level P <0.05. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 594 students of which 162 (27.3%) were English, 246 (41.4%) Italian and 186 (31.3%) Greek. Study findings demonstrated that students' attitudes toward HIV/AIDS patients were relatively positive, although the majority of them indicated fear of contracting HIV through clinical practice. Nursing students' positive feelings for HIV/AIDS patients were also correlated with the strong willingness to take care of them. CONCLUSIONS: Despite being exposed to different teaching and learning experiences, a significant part of the participants believe that HIV/AIDS make nursing a high-risk profession. Furthermore, students' misconceptions are not limited to clinical practice areas as they expressed concerns in sending their children in a class along with a child affected by AIDS and/or in dining in a restaurant where a chef affected by AIDS works. Students are in general well-disposed towards this patients' population but there is still stigma associated with this condition. A new teaching and learning approach may help redefining students' attitudes and in limiting the negative impact of misconceptions on the quality of nursing care. Further investigation in this area would help in shading light on the reasons why students are still biased in approaching AIDS/HIV patients. The use of a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews and/or focus group would be recommended.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The time interval between the patients' intubation and the performance of a tracheostomy has been considered as critical for the disease prognosis and outcome. The aim of the present study was to compare and contrast the outcomes of early vs late tracheostomy with regard to ICU patients' weaning from respiratory support. METHODS: This retrospective observational study, involved patients who were hospitalized in two general and one Covid-19 ICUs of two tertiary hospitals in Athens and were subjected to tracheostomy. Data were collected from the patients' medical records in order to estimate the duration of patient weaning and the number of days from the patients' intubation until the time of tracheostomy. In the present study the term earlytracheostomy denotes tracheostomy performed within 14 days from patient intubation and late tracheostomydefines the tracheostomy carried out after 14 days. For Covid-19 patients, guidelines suggested that tracheostomies should be performed 21 days following intubation, due to the high risk of virus transmission. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-one patients who underwent tracheostomy participated in the study. Most tracheostomies were performed using the percutaneous technique. The group of patients tracheostomized within 14 days after their admission in ICU weaned faster from respiratory support compared to ones who were tracheostomized after 14 days. CONCLUSIONS: The most common distinction between early and late tracheostomy is 14 days, with early tracheostomy being more beneficial in terms of patients' outcomes, and specifically ICU patients' weaning.

ABSTRACT

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) administration has been added to the therapeutic protocols of cancers, confined to the abdominal cavity. Since, a survival benefit in patients treated with adjuvant IPC has been demonstrated, fertility questions are raised in these patients. A comprehensive search of the English literature of PubMed/MEDLINE, EmBase and Google Scholar databases was conducted, from their inception until April 2021, following the MOOSE guidelines. Twelve out of 473 studies were included in the final review and analysis. After treatment with IPC for peritoneal carcinomatosis, 19 women, who underwent fertility-sparing surgery, with 20 successful pregnancies were reported. The mean interval time between IPC and pregnancy was 38.4 months (range 9-168 months). In 16 cases, conception was spontaneous, three required in vitro fertilisation, whereas one pregnancy was achieved through intrauterine insemination. Mean disease-free survival was 76 months (range 24-177 months). Childbearing is a feasible approach in selected patients, after treatment with IPC. When future pregnancy is desirable, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, gynaecologists, oncologists and reproductive specialists is required, to inform the patient thoroughly about the fertility preservation alternatives, without endangering patient's survival.

ABSTRACT

The mechanical properties and interfacial behaviour of two-dimensional (2D) materials are crucial for their use in a number of technological applications. In this paper, two buckling modes, wrinkling and buckling delamination, were used to characterize the mechanics of As2S3 nanosheets. The plane-strain moduli of As2S3 nanosheets along the armchair (AC) and zigzag (ZZ) directions were determined via periodic wrinkles to be 16.7 ± 0.5 GPa and 51.5 ± 1.9 GPa, respectively. This is one of the largest reported anisotropies of in-plane mechanical properties among 2D materials. Using the delaminated buckles, the adhesion energy of few-layer As2S3 nanosheets on silicon and polymer (polymethyl methacrylate and polydimethylsiloxane) substrates was determined to be 0.110 ± 0.006 and 0.022 ± 0.002 J m-2, respectively. A buckling mode map for As2S3 nanosheets on different substrates is presented.
