ABSTRACT

The utilization of triboelectric materials has gained considerable attention in recent years, offering a sustainable approach to energy harvesting and sensing technologies. Biomass-derived materials, owing to their abundance, renewability, and biocompatibility, offer promising avenues for enhancing the performance and versatility of triboelectric devices. This paper explores the synthesis and characterization of biomass-derived materials, their integration into triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), and their applications in energy harvesting, self-powered sensors, and environmental monitoring. This review presents an overview of the emerging field of advanced triboelectric applications that utilize the unique properties of biomass-derived materials. Additionally, it addresses the challenges and opportunities in employing biomass-derived materials for triboelectric applications, emphasizing the potential for sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions.

ABSTRACT

A new catalyst has been developed that utilizes molybdenum oxide (MoO3)/nickel molybdenum oxide (NiMoO4) heterostructured nanorods coupled with Pt ultrafine nanoparticles for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) toward industrial-grade water splitting. This catalyst has been synthesized using a versatile approach and has shown to perform better than noble-metals catalysts, such as Pt/C and RuO2, at industrial-grade current level (≥1000 mA·cm-2). When used simultaneously as a cathode and anode, the proposed material yields 10 mA·cm-2 at a remarkably small cell voltage of 1.55 V and has shown extraordinary durability for over 50 h. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have proved that the combination of MoO3 and NiMoO4 creates a metallic heterostructure with outstanding charge transfer ability. The DFT calculations have also shown that the excellent chemical coupling effect between the MoO3/NiMoO4 and Pt synergistically optimize the charge transfer capability and Gibbs free energies of intermediate species, leading to remarkably speeding up the reaction kinetics of water electrolysis.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the preferred treatment for long-term hemodialysis patients to allow reliable vascular access. Arteriovenous graft (AVG) is monitored using Doppler sonography to check a vessel's condition and predict complications such as steal syndrome. In this study, we developed an analysis algorithm and method to quantify steal syndrome using Doppler sonography. METHODS: Doppler sonography was used to determine the pattern of anterograde and retrograde flow. The ratio of blood volumes was calculated with a vision analysis software. First, performance of the developed algorithm was validated by comparing it with commercial Doppler sonography data. Doppler sonography was performed for an artificial vessel to analyze the steal flow. RESULTS: A total of 58 patients with steal flow were enrolled in this study. Of these patients, 23 did not have a difference in fingertip temperature between both sides. The median difference in temperature of 35 patients was 0.8°C (range, 0.3-1.9°C). The ratio of retrograde flow volume/antegrade flow volume in patients with the presence of temperature difference was significantly higher compared to that in patients without the temperature difference (p < .001). The ROC curve for the difference in flow volume had an AUC of 0.770. The optimal cutoff of difference in the flow volume between the two groups was 0.24 (sensitivity of 91.4 % and specificity of 52.2%). The flow volume difference was significantly positively correlated to temperature difference (r = 0.487, p < .003). CONCLUSION: Our algorithm could measure steal flow volume of a bidirectional waveform by antegrade arterial flow and retrograde reversal flow.

ABSTRACT

A photooxygenation-epoxidation cascade sequence converting alkenes to epoxy alcohols was developed and evaluated in batch and continuous-flow systems. In the batch system, the undesired interactions between the photooxygenation and epoxidation catalysts resulted in suboptimal yields, whereas the fine control of reaction parameters in the flow system allowed the allyl hydroperoxides produced through photooxygenation of alkenes to be rapidly converted to epoxy alcohols in yields of up to 93%. The developed procedure allows one to avoid an important synthetic bottleneck, works well where traditional batch synthesis fails, and can be scaled up to meet the needs of industrial production, thus presenting a valuable addition to the toolbox of practicing organic chemists.

ABSTRACT

Cardiac interfacing devices are essential components for the management of cardiovascular diseases, particularly in terms of electrophysiological monitoring and implementation of therapies. However, conventional cardiac devices are typically composed of rigid and bulky materials and thus pose significant challenges for effective long-term interfacing with the curvilinear surface of a dynamically beating heart. In this regard, the recent development of intrinsically soft bioelectronic devices using nanocomposites, which are fabricated by blending conductive nanofillers in polymeric and elastomeric matrices, has shown great promise. The intrinsically soft bioelectronics not only endure the dynamic beating motion of the heart and maintain stable performance but also enable conformal, reliable, and large-area interfacing with the target cardiac tissue, allowing for high-quality electrophysiological mapping, feedback electrical stimulations, and even mechanical assistance. Here, we explore next-generation cardiac interfacing strategies based on soft bioelectronic devices that utilize elastic conductive nanocomposites. We first discuss the conventional cardiac devices used to manage cardiovascular diseases and explain their undesired limitations. Then, we introduce intrinsically soft polymeric materials and mechanical restraint devices utilizing soft polymeric materials. After the discussion of the fabrication and functionalization of conductive nanomaterials, the introduction of intrinsically soft bioelectronics using nanocomposites and their application to cardiac monitoring and feedback therapy follow. Finally, comments on the future prospects of soft bioelectronics for cardiac interfacing technologies are discussed.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Youth suicide is a pressing global concern. Prior research has developed evidence-driven clinical pathways to screen and identify suicide risk among pediatric patients in outpatient clinics, emergency departments (ED) and inpatient hospital units. However, the feasibility of implementing these pathways remains to be established. Here, we share the results of a hospital-wide "youth suicide risk screening pathway" implementation trial at an urban academic pediatric hospital to address this gap. METHODS: A 3-tier "youth suicide risk screening pathway" using The Ask Suicide-Screening Questions (ASQ) was implemented for patients aged 10 to 26 years who received care at an urban academic pediatric hospital's emergency department or inpatient units. We retrospectively reviewed implementation outcomes of this pathway from January 1 to August 31, 2019. The feasibility of this implementation was measured by assessing the pathway's degree of execution, fidelity, resource utilization, and acceptability. RESULTS: Of 4108 eligible patient encounters, 3424 (83%) completed the screen. Forty-eight (1%) screened acute positive, 263 (8%) screened nonacute positive and 3113 (91%) screened negative. Patients reporting positive suicide risk were more likely to be older and female, although more males required specialty mental health evaluations. Pathway fidelity was 83% among all positive screens and 94% among acute positive screens. The clinical pathway implementation required 16 hours of provider training time and was associated with slightly longer length of stay for inpatients that screened positive (4 vs 3 days). Sixty-five percent of nurses and 78% of social work providers surveyed supported participation in this effort. CONCLUSIONS: It is feasible to implement a youth suicide risk screening pathway without overburdening the system at an urban academic pediatric hospital.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUD: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between fluctuation in blood pressure (BP), ocular perfusion pressure (OPP) and visual field (VF) progression in normal-tension glaucoma (NTG). METHODS: This prospective, longitudinal study included 44 patients with NTG. Only newly diagnosed NTG patients who had not been treated with a glaucoma medication were included. Patients were examined every year for 7 years. Intraocular pressure (IOP), heart rate (HR), systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), and diastolic ocular perfusion pressure (DOPP) were measured at the same time. Ophthalmic examinations, including perimetry, were performed also. Initial VF were compared with follow-up data after 7 years. RESULTS: After 7 years of follow-up, 9 of the 44 patients showed VF progression. The standard deviation (SD) of SBP and OPP were significantly associated with VF progression (P = 0.007, < 0.001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis showed that VF progression was significantly associated with SD of OPP (odds ratio, OR = 2.012, 95% CI = 1.016-3.985; P = 0.045). CONCLUSIONS: Fluctuation in OPP was associated with VF progression in patients with NTG.

ABSTRACT

Background: Hwabyung is a Korean culture-bound syndrome characterized by anger-related physical and psychological symptoms. Depressive disorder is a common mental illness occurring worldwide, and has been reported to have a high comorbidity rate with Hwabyung. For patients with depressive disorders, differential diagnosis and combined treatment for Hwabyung should be considered. Mindfulness and Qigong may be effective alternatives for regulating emotions such as depression, anxiety, and anger. This study aims to investigate whether Mindfulness and Qigong Training for Self-Healing (MQT-SH) would improve emotional problems in patients with Hwabyung and depressive disorder. Methods: This study will be a two-arm block randomized controlled trial. A total of 64 participants will be recruited and randomly assigned to either experimental or control group. While the experimental group will perform MQT-SH for the first six weeks, the control group will receive no treatment. During the next six weeks, the control group will perform MQT-SH for ethical equity. Assessments will be conducted at baseline, post-intervention (6 weeks) and follow-up (12 weeks). The primary outcomes would be Hwabyung and depression, while the secondary outcomes would include anxiety, anger, and vitality. Discussion: This study will provide a basis for assessing the effectiveness of mindfulness and Qigong training in patients with Hwabyung and depressive disorder. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Kyung-Hee University Oriental Medicine Hospital in Gangdong (KHNMCOH 2023-09-003). The results will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications. Trial registration: This trial was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS), Republic of Korea, No. KCT0008937 and was registered on November 10, 2023.

ABSTRACT

An inverse association between vitamin D status and obesity has been reported across diverse populations and age groups in humans. In animal model of diet-induced obesity, dysregulation of vitamin D metabolism has been observed. However, the causal relationship between vitamin D status and obesity is not conclusive. Several explanations, such as volumetric dilution, sequestration of vitamin D into adipose tissue, and limited sunlight exposure, have been suggested as the underlying mechanisms linking poor vitamin D status and obesity. Vitamin D can modulate adipose tissue biology, spanning from adipocyte differentiation to adipocyte apoptosis and energy metabolism, indicating its potential impact on adiposity. In this chapter, we will review the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and determinants of vitamin D deficiency among different populations, as well as changes in vitamin D metabolism associated with obesity. Additionally, we will review vitamin D's regulation of adipogenesis and lipogenesis at the cellular level in order to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms linking vitamin D levels and obesity.

ABSTRACT

Medication is a potential factor influencing frailty. However, the relationship between pharmaceutical treatments and frailty remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted the present systematic review to summarize the association between drug therapy and the risk of incident frailty in older adults. We systematically searched the MEDLINE electronic database for articles indexed between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2021, for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies reporting frailty changes associated with drug therapy. A total of 6 RCTs and 13 cohort studies involving 211,948 participants were identified, and their treatments were categorized into six medication classes: analgesics, cardiometabolic medication, chemotherapy, central nervous system (CNS)-active medication, hormonal therapy, and nutritional supplements. While the analysis revealed that only CNS-active medications were associated with an elevated risk of frailty, other medication classes also affected frailty; however, this is not conclusively attributable to a class-wide effect.

ABSTRACT

Patient-derived organoids (PDOs) are valuable in predicting response to cancer therapy. PDOs are ideal models for precision oncologists. However, their practical application in guiding timely clinical decisions remains challenging. This study focused on patients with advanced EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer and employed a cancer organoid-based diagnosis reactivity prediction (CODRP)-based precision oncology platform to assess the efficacy of EGFR inhibitor treatments. CODRP was employed to evaluate EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) drug sensitivity. The results were compared to those obtained using area under the curve index. This study validated this index by testing lung cancer-derived organoids in 14 patients with lung cancer. The CODRP index-based drug sensitivity test reliably classified patient responses to EGFR-TKI treatment within a clinically suitable 10-day timeline, which aligned with clinical drug treatment responses. This approach is promising for predicting and analyzing the efficacy of anticancer, ultimately contributing to the development of a precision medicine platform.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Understanding how patients' frailty and the physiological stress of surgical procedures affect postoperative outcomes may inform risk stratification of older patients undergoing surgery. The objective of the study was to examine the association of peri-operative frailty with mortality, 30-day readmission and days at home after non-cardiac surgical procedures of different physiological stress. METHODS: This retrospective study used Medicare claims data from a 7.125% random sample of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries from 2015 to 2019 who were aged ≥ 65 years and underwent non-cardiac surgical procedure listed in the Operative Stress Score categories. The exposure of the study was claims-based frailty index (robust, < 0.15; pre-frail, 0.15 to < 0.25; mildly frail, 0.25 to < 0.35; and moderate-to-severely frail, ≥ 0.35) with Operative Stress Score categories being 1, very low stress to 5, very high stress. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at 30 days and 365 days after the surgical procedure. RESULTS: In total, 1,019,938 patients (mean (SD) age of 76.1 (7.3) years; 52.3% female; 16.8% frail) were included. The cumulative incidence of mortality generally increased with Operative Stress Score category, ranging from 5.0% (Operative Stress Score 2) to 24.9% (Operative Stress Score 4) at 365 days. Within each category, increasing frailty was associated with mortality at 30 days (hazard ratio comparing moderate-to-severe frailty vs. robust ranged from 1.59-3.91) and at 365 days (hazard ratio 1.30-4.04). The variation in postoperative outcomes by patients' frailty level was much greater than the variation by the operative stress category. CONCLUSIONS: These results emphasise routine frailty screening before major and minor non-cardiac procedures and the need for greater clinician awareness of postoperative outcomes beyond 30 days in shared decision-making with older adults with frailty.

BACKGROUND: We previously reported the mean 6-year outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) using fourth-generation ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) articulations. With extended observations, this study aimed to report the mean 12-year outcomes focusing on bearing-related complications of CoC THA. METHODS: We reviewed primary CoC THAs performed between May 2009 and April 2012 at a single institution. Of the 831 hips (739 patients), 716 hips (635 patients) that satisfied a minimum 10-year follow-up were included. The mean age at operation was 54 years (range, 16 to 83). The occurrence of bearing-specific complications, including ceramic fractures and noise generation, was evaluated. The mean follow-up duration was 12 years (range, 10 to 14). RESULTS: A total of two (0.3%) ceramic liner fractures occurred, as previously reported. No additional ceramic fractures were observed during the extended follow-up period. However, the cumulative incidence of audible noise increased from 6.4 (48 of 749) to 8.2% (59 of 716). Of the 59 hips with noise, 26 (44.1%) developed noise within 1 year, whereas 13 (22.0%) presented with noise more than 5 years after THA. The noise was described as clicking in 35 hips (4.9%) and as squeaking in 24 hips (3.4%). No revision surgeries were performed for noise, except in two cases of concomitant liner fractures. The implant survivorship free of any revision was 98.1% at 12 years. CONCLUSION: No additional ceramic fractures were identified in this extension study at a minimum follow-up of 10 years. However, the prevalence of articular noise has increased from 6.4 to 8.2% since the previous report. Possible late-onset noise should be considered when performing CoC THA in younger patients.

Objectives: The relationships among positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA), obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and periodic limb movement during sleep (PLMS) are unclear. We analyzed these relationships according to OSA severity and explored the underlying mechanisms. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 6,140 eligible participants who underwent full-night diagnostic polysomnography in four clinical centers over a period of 5 years with eventsynchronized analysis. The PLMS index (PLMI) and periodic limb movements with arousal index (PLMAI) were evaluated. The effects of POSA on the PLMI, PLMAI, and PLMS were analyzed according to OSA severity. Results: The mean PLMI and PLMAI, as well as PLMS prevalence, were significantly lower in those with severe OSA than in those with mild and moderate OSA. The mean PLMI was higher in mild OSA group than in control group. The mean PLMI (4.80 ± 12.71 vs. 2.59 ± 9.82 events/h, p < 0.001) and PLMAI (0.89 ± 3.66 vs. 0.53 ± 3.33 events/h, p < 0.001), and the prevalence of PLMS (11% vs. 5.3%, p < 0.001) were higher in patients with POSA than patients with non-POSA. This trend was particularly marked in severe OSA group (OR 1.55, 95%CI [1.07-2.27]) and less so in mild (OR 0.56, 95%CI [0.30-1.03]) and moderate (OR 1.82, 95%CI [0.99-3.34]) OSA groups. Conclusion: The POSA group tended to have a higher prevalence of PLMS, particularly in those with severe OSA. If PLMS is prominent, diagnosis and treatment of POSA and OSA may be considered.

Cell-based tissue engineering often requires the use of scaffolds to provide a 3-dimensional (3D) framework for cell proliferation and tissue formation. Polycaprolactone (PCL), a type of polymer, has good printability, favorable surface modifiability, adaptability, and biodegradability. However, its large-scale applicability is hindered by its hydrophobic nature, which affects biological properties. Composite materials can be created by adding bioactive materials to the polymer to improve the properties of PCL scaffolds (PSs). Osteolectin is an odontogenic factor that promotes the maintenance of the adult skeleton by promoting the differentiation of LepR+ cells into osteoblasts. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether 3D-printed PCL/osteolectin scaffolds supply a suitable microenvironment for the odontogenic differentiation of human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). The hDPCs were cultured on 3D-printed PSs with or without pores. Cell attachment and cell proliferation were evaluated using EZ-Cytox. The odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs was evaluated by alizarin red S staining and alkaline phosphatase assays. Western blotting was used to evaluate the expression of the proteins DSPP and DMP-Results: The attachment of hDPCs to PSs with pores was significantly higher than to PSs without pores. The odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs was induced more in PCL/osteolectin scaffolds than in PSs, but there was no statistically significant difference. 3D-printed PSs with pores are suitable for the growth of hDPCs, and the PCL/osteolectin scaffolds can provide a more favorable microenvironment for the odontogenic differentiation of hDPCs. .

BACKGROUND: The association between alcohol consumption and risk of sudden cardiac death and/or fatal ventricular arrhythmia remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the association between alcohol consumption, genetic traits for alcohol metabolism, and the risk of sudden cardiac death and/or fatal ventricular arrhythmia. METHODS: We identified 397,164 subjects enrolled between 2006 and 2010 from the UK Biobank database and followed them until 2021. Alcohol consumption was categorized as current nondrinkers (nondrinkers and ex-drinkers), mild drinkers, moderate drinkers, or heavy drinkers. Genetic traits of alcohol metabolism were stratified according to the polygenic risk score tertiles. The primary and secondary outcomes were a composite of sudden cardiac death and fatal ventricular arrhythmia, as well as their individual components. RESULTS: During the follow-up (median 12.5 years), 3,543 cases of clinical outcomes occurred. Although mild, moderate, and heavy drinkers showed deceased risks of outcomes compared with current non-drinkers, there was no prognostic difference among non-drinkers, mild drinkers, moderate drinkers, and heavy drinkers. Ex-drinkers showed increased risk in the univariate analysis, but the significance was attenuated after adjusting covariates (hazard ratio (HR) 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.94-1.50). As a continuous variable, alcohol consumption was not associated with clinical outcomes (HR 1.01; 95% CI 0.99-1.02). Consistent with these findings, there was no association between genetic traits for alcohol metabolism, and the risk of clinical outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Alcohol consumption was neither a protective nor a risk factor for sudden cardiac death or fatal ventricular arrhythmia. Genetic traits of alcohol metabolism were not associated with the clinical prognosis.

ABSTRACT

Cryptorchidism, the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum, and testicular cancer show a strong correlation in both dogs and humans. Yet, long-standing medical debates persist about whether the location of undescended testes directly causes testicular cancer in humans or if both conditions stem from a common origin. Although testicular cancer is a prevalent disease in dogs, even less is known about its cause and correlation with testicular descent in this species. This review investigates the relation between these two disorders in dogs, drawing insights from human studies, and examines key biomarkers identified thus far. In addition, it explores potential causal links, including the impact of temperature on maturing testicular cells and a potential shared genetic origin. Notably, this literature review reveals significant differences between men and dogs in reproductive development, histological and molecular features of testicular tumors, and the prevalence of specific tumor types, such as Sertoli cell tumors (SCTs) in cryptorchid dogs and germ cell tumors (GCTs) in humans. These disparities caution against using dogs as models for human testicular cancer research and underscore the limitations when drawing comparisons between species. The paper concludes by suggesting specific research initiatives to enhance our understanding of the complex interplay between cryptorchidism and testicular cancer in dogs.

ABSTRACT

Pyroptosis is a form of programmed cell death characterized by gasdermin (GSDM)-mediated pore formation in the cell membrane, resulting in the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and cellular lysis. Increasing evidence has shown that pyroptosis is responsible for the progression of various pulmonary disorders. The inhalation of polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) causes severe lung inflammation and pulmonary toxicity; however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the role of pyroptosis in PHMG-induced pulmonary toxicity. We exposed bronchial epithelial cells, BEAS-2B, to PHMG phosphate (PHMG-p) and evaluated cell death type, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and relative expression levels of pyroptosis-related proteins. Our data revealed that PHMG-p reduced viability and induced morphological alterations in BEAS-2B cells. Exposure to PHMG-p induced excessive accumulation of mitochondrial ROS (mtROS) in BEAS-2B cells. PHMG-p activated caspase-dependent apoptosis as well as NLRP3/caspase-1/GSDMD-mediated- and caspase-3/GSDME-mediated pyroptosis through mitochondrial oxidative stress in BEAS-2B cells. Notably, PHMG-p reduced mitochondrial respiratory function and induced the translocation of Bax and cleaved GSDM into the mitochondria, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. Our results enhanced our understanding of PHMG-p-induced lung toxicity by demonstrating that PHMG-p induces pyroptosis via mtROS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction in bronchial epithelial cells.

The synthesis of ideal bioceramics to guide the fate of cells and subsequent bone regeneration within the chemical, biological, and physical microenvironment is a challenging long-term task. This study developed amorphous calcium magnesium phosphate (ACMP) bioceramics via a simple co-precipitation method. The role of Mg2+ in the formation of ACMP is investigated using physicochemical and biological characterization at different Ca/Mg molar ratio of the initial reaction solution. Additionally, ACMP bioceramics show superior cytocompatibility and improved osteogenic differentiation of co-cultured MC3T3-E1 cells. Regulation of the microenvironment with Mg2+ can promote early-stage bone regeneration. For this, bioprinting technology is employed to prepare ACMP-modified 3D porous structures. Our hypothesis is that the incorporation of ACMP into methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) bioink can trigger the osteogenic differentiation of encapsulated preosteoblast and stimulate bone regeneration. The cell-laden ACMP composite structures display stable printability and superior cell viability and cell proliferation. Also, constructs loading the appropriate amount of ACMP bioceramic showed significant osteogenic differentiation activity compared to the pure GelMA. We demonstrate that the dissolved Mg2+ cation microenvironment in ACMP-modified composite constructs plays an effective biochemical role, and can regulate cell fate. Our results predict that GelMA/ACMP bioink has significant potential in patient-specific bone tissue regeneration.
