ABSTRACT

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation carried out by the soybean-rhizobia symbiosis increases soybean yield and reduces the amount of nitrogen fertilizer that has been applied. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are crucial in plant growth and development, prompting an investigation into their role in the symbiotic interaction of soybean with partner rhizobia. Through integrated small RNA, transcriptome, and degradome sequencing analysis, 1215 known miRNAs, 314 of them conserved, and 187 novel miRNAs were identified, with 44 differentially expressed miRNAs in soybean roots inoculated with Sinorhizobium fredii HH103 and a ttsI mutant. The study unveiled that the known miRNA gma-MIR398a-p5 was downregulated in the presence of the ttsI mutation, while the target gene of gma-MIR398a-p5, Glyma.06G007500, associated with nitrogen metabolism, was upregulated. The results of this study offer insights for breeding high-efficiency nitrogen-fixing soybean varieties, enhancing crop yield and quality.

ABSTRACT

Endocervical gastric-type adenocarcinoma (GAS) is an aggressive type of endocervical mucinous adenocarcinoma characterized as being unrelated to human papillomavirus (HPV) and resistant to chemo/radiotherapy. In this study, we investigated the histology, immunohistochemistry patterns and molecular characteristics in a large cohort of GAS (n=62). Histologically, the majority of GAS cases exhibited a distinct morphology resembling gastric glands, although two exceptional cases exhibited HPV-associated adenocarcinoma (HPVA) morphology, while retaining the characteristic histology of GAS at the invasive front. By immunohistochemistry, Claudin18.2 emerged as a highly sensitive and specific marker for GAS. Additionally, the strong expression of Claudin18.2 in GAS patients indicated the potential of anti-Claudin18.2 therapy in the treatment of GAS. Other immunohistochemistry markers, including Muc6, p16, p53, Pax8, ER and PR, may provide additional diagnostic clues for GAS. Quantitative methylation analysis revealed that the overexpression of Claudin18.2 in GAS was governed by the hypomethylation of the CLDN18.2 promoter CpG islands. To further elucidate the pathogenic mechanisms of GAS and its relationship with gastric adenocarcinoma, we performed whole exome sequencing (WES) on 11 GAS and 9 gastric adenocarcinomas. TP53, CDKN2A, STK11 and TTN emerged as the most frequently mutated genes in GAS. Mutations in these genes primarily affected cell growth, cell cycle regulation, senescence and apoptosis. Intriguingly, these top mutated genes in GAS were also commonly mutated in gastric and pancreaticobiliary adenocarcinomas. Regarding germline variants, we identified a probably pathogenic variant in SPINK1, a gene linked to hereditary pancreatic cancer syndrome, in one GAS sample. This finding suggests a potential pathogenic link between pancreatic cancers and GAS. Overall, GAS exhibits molecular characteristics that resemble those observed in gastric and pancreaticobiliary adenocarcinomas, thereby lending support to the aggressive nature of GAS compared to HPVA.

ABSTRACT

Mitigating pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) and post-harvest food loss (PHFL) is essential for enhancing food securrity. To reduce food loss, the use of plant derived specialized metabolites can represent a good approach to develop a more eco-friendly agriculture. Here, we have discovered that soybean seeds hidden underground during winter by Tscherskia triton and Apodemus agrarius during winter possess a higher concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) compared to those remaining exposed in fields. This selection by rodents suggests that among the identified volatiles, 3-FurAldehyde (Fur) and (E)-2-Heptenal (eHep) effectively inhibit the growth of plant pathogens such as Aspergillus flavus, Alternaria alternata, Fusarium solani and Pseudomonas syringae. Additionally, compounds such as Camphene (Cam), 3-FurAldehyde, and (E)-2-Heptenal, suppress the germination of seeds in crops including soybean, rice, maize, and wheat. Importantly, some of these VOCs also prevent rice seeds from pre-harvest sprouting. Consequently, our findings offer straightforward and practical approaches to seed protection and the reduction of PHS and PHFL, indicating potential new pathways for breeding, and reducing both PHS and pesticide usage in agriculture.

ABSTRACT

Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (eCO2R) in acid holds promise in renewable electricity-powered CO2 utilization with high efficiency, but the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) often prevails and results in a low eCO2R selectivity. Here, using cobalt phthalocyanine/Ketjen black (CoPc/KB) as the model catalysts, we systematically study the effect of active site density, operational current density, and hydrated cations on the acidic eCO2R selectivity and decipher it through the componential dynamics of electric double layer (EDL). The optimal CoPc-4/KB demonstrates a near-unity CO Faradaic efficiency from 50 to 400 mA cm-2 and superb operational stability (>120 h) at 100 mA cm-2. Aided by in situ Raman and infrared spectroscopies, we reveal that the proper cations establish an electrostatic shield for mitigating bulk H+ penetration and mediate the interfacial water structure for suppressing HER. This study should elicit further profound thinking on robust eCO2R system design from the perspective of multiphasic and dynamic EDL.

ABSTRACT

Certain heavy metals have been correlated to an elevated risk of inflammation-related diseases and mortality. Nevertheless, the intricate relationships between metal exposure, inflammation and mortality remain unknown. We included 3741 adults with measurements of ten urinary heavy metals in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2010, followed up to December 31, 2019. Low-grade systemic inflammation was evaluated by various markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP) and ratios derived from regular blood tests. We assessed associations between heavy metal and all-cause mortality using multivariate COX regressions. Then we assessed the mediation effect of low-grade systemic inflammation on the associations via Sobel Test. To gauge the systemic inflammatory potential of the multi-metal mixture and its correlation with all-cause mortality, a Metal Mixture Inflammatory Index (MMII) was developed using reduced rank regression (RRR) models. The association between MMII and all-cause mortality was explored via multivariate COX regressions. Cadmium, antimony and uranium displayed positive associations with mortality, with hazard ratios (HR) ranging from 1.18 to 1.46 (all P-FDR < 0.05). Mediation analyses revealed that the associations between specific heavy metals (cadmium and antimony) and mortality risk were slightly mediated by the low-grade systemic inflammation markers, with mediation proportions ranging from 3.11 % to 5.38 % (all P < 0.05). MMII, the weighted sum of 9 heavy metals, significantly predicted platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and CRP (ß = 0.10 and 1.16, all P < 0.05), was positively associated with mortality risk (HR 1.28, 95 % CI 1.14 to 1.43). Exposure to heavy metals might increase all-cause mortality, partly mediated by low-grade systemic inflammation. MMII, designed to assess the potential systemic inflammatory effects of exposure to multiple heavy metals, was closely related to the all-cause mortality risk. This study introduces MMII as an approach to evaluating co-exposure and its potential health effects comprehensively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Depression and sleep disturbances are associated with increased risks of various diseases and mortality, but their impacts on mortality in cancer survivors remain unclear. The objective of this study was to characterize the independent and joint associations of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances with mortality outcomes in cancer survivors. METHODS: This population-based prospective cohort study included cancer survivors aged ≥ 20 years (n = 2947; weighted population, 21,003,811) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018 cycles. Depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances were self-reported. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9). Death outcomes were determined by correlation with National Death Index records through December 31, 2019. Primary outcomes included all-cause, cancer-specific, and noncancer mortality. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 69 months (interquartile range, 37-109 months), 686 deaths occurred: 240 participants died from cancer, 146 from heart disease, and 300 from other causes. Separate analyses revealed that compared with a PHQ-9 score (0-4), a PHQ-9 score (5-9) was associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.28; 95% CI, 1.03-1.59), and a PHQ-9 score (≥ 10) was associated with greater risk of all-cause mortality (HR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.04-1.80) and noncancer mortality (HR, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.01-2.10). Single sleep disturbances were not associated with mortality risk. In joint analyses, the combination of a PHQ-9 score ≥ 5 and no sleep disturbances, but not sleep disturbances, was associated with increased risks of all-cause mortality, cancer-specific mortality, and noncancer mortality. Specifically, compared with individuals with a PHQ-9 score of 0-4 and no sleep disturbances, HRs for all-cause mortality and noncancer mortality in individuals with a PHQ-9 score of 5-9 and no sleep disturbances were 1.72 (1.21-2.44) and 1.69 (1.10-2.61), respectively, and 2.61 (1.43-4.78) and 2.77 (1.27-6.07), respectively, in individuals with a PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 and no sleep disturbances; HRs for cancer-specific mortality in individuals with a PHQ-9 score ≥ 5 and no sleep disturbances were 1.95 (1.16-3.27). CONCLUSIONS: Depressive symptoms were linked to a high risk of mortality in cancer survivors. The combination of a PHQ-9 score (≥ 5) and an absence of self-perceived sleep disturbances was associated with greater all-cause mortality, cancer-specific mortality, and noncancer mortality risks, particularly in individuals with a PHQ-9 score (≥ 10).

ABSTRACT

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive (HER2+) breast cancer (BC) tends to metastasize and has a bad prognosis due to its high malignancy and rapid progression. Inositol polyphosphate 4-phosphatase isoenzymes type II (INPP4B) plays unequal roles in the development of various cancers. However, the function of INPP4B in HER2+ BC has not been elucidated. Here we found that INPP4B expression was significantly lower in HER2+ BC and positively correlated with the prognosis by bioinformatics and tissue immunofluorescence analyses. Overexpression of INPP4B inhibited cell proliferation, migration, and growth of xenografts in HER2+ BC cells. Conversely, depletion of INPP4B reversed these effects and activated the PDK1/AKT and Wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathways to promote epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) progression. Moreover, INPP4B overexpression blocked epidermal growth factor (EGF) -induced cell proliferation, migration and EMT progression, whereas INPP4B depletion antagonized HER2 depletion in reduction of cell proliferation and migration of HER2+ BC cells. Additionally, Lapatinib (LAP) inhibited HER2+ BC cell survival, proliferation and migration, and its effect was further enhanced by overexpression of INPP4B. In summary, our results illustrate that INPP4B suppresses HER2+ BC growth, migration and EMT, and its expression level affects patient outcome, further providing new insights into clinical practice.

ABSTRACT

With the processes of industrialization and urbanization, heavy metal ion pollution has become a thorny problem in water systems. Among the various technologies developed for the removal of heavy metal ions, the adsorption method is widely studied by researchers and various nanomaterials with good adsorption performances have been prepared during the past decades. In this paper, a variety of novel nanomaterials with excellent adsorption performances for Pb(II) and Cu(II) reported in recent years are reviewed, such as carbon-based materials, clay mineral materials, zero-valent iron and their derivatives, MOFs, nanocomposites, etc. The novel nanomaterials with extremely high adsorption capacity, selectivity and particular nanostructures are summarized and introduced, along with their advantages and disadvantages. And, some future research priorities for the treatment of wastewater are also prospected.

ABSTRACT

High-brightness laser lighting is confronted with crucial challenges in developing laser-excitable color converting materials with effective heat dissipation and super optical performance. Herein, a novel composite of phosphor-in-glass film on transparent diamond (PiGF@diamond) is designed and fabricated via a facile low-temperature co-sintering strategy. The as-prepared La3Si6N11:Ce3+ (LSN:Ce) PiGF@diamond with well-retained optical properties of raw phosphor shows a record thermal conductivity of ≈599 W m-1 K-1, which is about 60 times higher than that of currently well-used PiGF@sapphire (≈10 W m-1 K-1). As a consequence, this color converter can bear laser power density up to 40.24 W mm-2 and a maximum luminance flux of 5602 lm without luminescence saturation due to efficient inhibition of laser-induced heat accumulation. By further supplementing red spectral component of CaAlSiN3:Eu2+ (CASN:Eu), the PiGF@diamond based white laser diode is successfully constructed, which can yield warm white light with a high color rendering index of 89.3 and find practical LD-driven applications. The findings will pave the way for realizing the commercial application of PiGF composite in laser lighting and display.

ABSTARCT: Necrozoospermia is a poorly documented condition with a low incidence, and its definition and clinical significance are unclear. Herein, we provide a reference range for necrozoospermia and discuss its possible etiology and impact on male fertility and assisted reproductive outcomes. We extracted relevant information from 650 Chinese male partners of infertile couples and statistically analyzed sperm vitality. Necrozoospermia was present in 3.4% (22/650) of our study population, and the lower cut-off value for sperm vitality was 75.3%. We compared two methods for assessing sperm vitality (eosin-nigrosin head staining and hypo-osmotic swelling test [HOST]), for which the percentage in the eosin-nigrosin group (mean ± standard deviation [s.d.]: 77.5% ± 10.5%) was significantly higher than that in the HOST group (mean ± s.d.: 58.1% ± 6.7% [5-10 min after incubation] and 55.6% ± 8.2% [25-30 min after incubation]; both P < 0.001). The incidence of necrozoospermia increased with age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.116, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.048-1.189, P = 0.001), while the percentage of normal sperm morphology and DNA fragmentation index (DFI) were significantly associated with necrozoospermia, with ORs of 0.691 (95% CI: 0.511-0.935, P = 0.017) and 1.281 (95% CI: 1.180-1.390, P < 0.001), respectively. In the following 6 months, we recruited 166 patients in the nonnecrozoospermia group and 87 patients in the necrozoospermia group to compare intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and pregnancy outcomes between the two groups. The necrozoospermia group had a significantly lower normal fertilization rate (74.7% vs 78.2%, P = 0.041; OR = 0.822; 95% CI: 0.682-0.992) than that in the nonnecrozoospermia group. This study presents substantial information on necrozoospermia to establish comprehensive and applicable reference values for sperm vitality for spontaneous conception and artificially assisted reproductive management.

ABSTRACT

The effective monitoring of microalgae cultivation is crucial for optimizing their energy utilization efficiency. In this paper, a quantitative analysis method, using microalgae images based on two convolutional neural networks, EfficientNet (EFF) and residual network (RES), is proposed. Suspension samples prepared from two types of dried microalgae powders, Rhodophyta (RH) and Spirulina (SP), were used to mimic real microalgae cultivation settings. The method's prediction accuracy of the algae concentration ranges from 0.94 to 0.99. RH, with a distinctively pronounced red-green-blue value shift, achieves a higher prediction accuracy than SP. The prediction results of the two algorithms were significantly superior to those of a linear regression. Additionally, RES outperforms EFF in terms of its generalization ability and robustness, which is attributable to its distinct residual block architecture. The RES provides a viable approach for the image-based quantitative analysis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted a rapid shift to online teaching, placing unprecedented demands on educators' physical and mental well-being. However, the relationship between English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers' physical activity, emotion regulation, and competence for online teaching remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the interplay between EFL teachers' physical activity, emotion regulation strategies, and competence for online teaching. RESULTS: Structural equation modeling revealed significant direct and indirect effects, indicating that physical activity positively influences emotion regulation, which, in turn, enhances teachers' competence for online instruction. Furthermore, emotion regulation was found to mediate the relationship between physical activity and online teaching competence. CONCLUSIONS: These findings underscore the importance of promoting physical activity among EFL teachers as a means to enhance their emotion regulation skills and competence for online teaching, particularly in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. IMPLICATIONS: The study highlights the need for targeted interventions aimed at supporting EFL teachers' well-being and professional development, with implications for educational policies, teacher training programs, and institutional support structures in the digital learning landscape.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the current study is to investigate the diagnostic value of R2* mapping versus reduced field-of-view diffusion-weighted imaging (rDWI) of the primary lesion of rectal cancer for preoperative prediction of nonenlarged lymph node metastasis (NLNM). Eighty-one patients with pathologically confirmed rectal cancer underwent preoperative R2* mapping and rDWI sequences before total mesorectal excisions and accompanying regional lymph node dissections. Two radiologists independently performed whole-tumor measurements of R2* and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) parameters on primary lesions of rectal cancer. Patients were divided into positive (NLNM+) and negative (NLNM-) groups based on their pathological analysis. The tumor location, maximum diameter of the tumor, and maximum short diameter of the lymph node were assessed. R2* and ADC, pT stage, tumor grade, status of mesorectal fascia, and extramural vascular invasion were also studied for their potential relationships with NLNM using multivariate logistic regression analysis. The NLNM+ group had significantly higher R2* (43.56 ± 8.43 vs. 33.87 ± 9.57, p < 0.001) and lower ADC (1.00 ± 0.13 vs. 1.06 ± 0.22, p = 0.036) than the NLNM- group. R2* and ADC were correlated to lymph node metastasis (r = 0.510, p < 0.001 for R2*; r = -0.235, p = 0.035 for ADC). R2* and ADC showed good and moderate diagnostic abilities in the assessment of NLNM status with corresponding area-under-the-curve values of 0.795 and 0.636. R2* provided a significantly better diagnostic performance compared with ADC for the prediction of NLNM status (z = 1.962, p = 0.0498). The multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that R2* was a compelling factor of lymph node metastasis (odds ratio = 56.485, 95% confidence interval: 5.759-554.013; p = 0.001). R2* mapping had significantly higher diagnostic performance than rDWI from the primary tumor of rectal cancer in the prediction of NLNM status.

BACKGROUND: Lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) is associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction (MI). However, the mechanism underlying this association has yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVES: This multicenter study aimed to investigate whether association between Lp(a) and MI risk is reinforced by the presence of low-attenuation plaque (LAP) identified by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). METHODS: In a derivation cohort, a total of 5,607 patients with stable chest pain suspected of coronary artery disease who underwent CCTA and Lp(a) measurement were prospectively enrolled. In validation cohort, 1,122 patients were retrospectively collected during the same period. High Lp(a) was defined as Lp(a) ≥50 mg/dL. The primary endpoint was a composite of time to fatal or nonfatal MI. Associations were estimated using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 8.2 years (Q1-Q3: 7.2-9.3 years), the elevated Lp(a) levels were associated with MI risk (adjusted HR [aHR]: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.46-2.49; P < 0.001). There was a significant interaction between Lp(a) and LAP (Pinteraction <0.001) in relation to MI risk. When stratified by the presence or absence of LAP, Lp(a) was associated with MI in patients with LAP (aHR: 3.03; 95% CI: 1.92-4.76; P < 0.001). Mediation analysis revealed that LAP mediated 73.3% (P < 0.001) for the relationship between Lp(a) and MI. The principal findings remained unchanged in the validation cohort. CONCLUSIONS: Elevated Lp(a) augmented the risk of MI during 8 years of follow-up, especially in patients with LAP identified by CCTA. The presence of LAP could reinforce the relationship between Lp(a) and future MI occurrence.

ABSTRACT

Organic self-assembled molecules (OSAMs) based hole-transporting materials play a pivotal role in achieving highly efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells (IPSCs). However, the reported carbazol-based OSAMs have serious drawbacks, such as poor wettability for perovskite solution spreading due to the nonpolar surface, worse matched energy arrangement with perovskite, and limited molecular species, which greatly limit the device performance. To address above problems, a novel OSAM [4-(3,6-glycol monomethyl ether-9H-carbazol-9-yl) butyl]phosphonic acid (GM-4PACz) was synthesized as hole-transporting material by introducing glycol monomethyl ether (GM) side chains at carbazolyl unit. GM groups enhance the surface energy of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)/SAM substrate to facilitate the nucleation and growth of up perovskite film, suppress cation defects, release the residual stress at SAM/perovskite interface, and evaluate energy level for matching with perovskite. Consequently, the GM-4PACz based IPSC achieves a champion PCE of 25.52 %, a respectable open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 1.21 V, a high stability, possessing 93.29 % and 91.75 % of their initial efficiency after aging in air for 2000 h or tracking at maximum power point for 1000 h, respectively.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Atrial fibrillation (AF) and flutter are common causes of hospitalizations but contemporary long-term outcomes following these episodes are uncertain. This study assessed outcomes up to 10 years after an acute AF or flutter hospitalization. METHODS: Patients hospitalized acutely with a primary diagnosis of AF or flutter from 2008-17 from all public and most private hospitals in Australia and New Zealand were included. Kaplan-Meier methods and flexible parametric survival modelling were used to estimate survival and loss in life expectancy, respectively. Competing risk model accounting for death was used when estimating incidence of non-fatal outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 260 492 adults (mean age 70.5 ± 14.4 years, 49.6% female) were followed up for 1 068 009 person-years (PY), during which 69 167 died (incidence rate 6.5/100 PY) with 91.2% survival at 1 year, 72.7% at 5 years, and 55.2% at 10 years. Estimated loss in life expectancy was 2.6 years, or 16.8% of expected life expectancy. Re-hospitalizations for heart failure (2.9/100 PY), stroke (1.7/100 PY), and myocardial infarction (1.1/100 PY) were common with respective cumulative incidences of 16.8%, 11.0%, and 7.1% by 10 years. Re-hospitalization for AF or flutter occurred in 21.3% by 1 year, 35.3% by 5 years, and 41.2% by 10 years (11.6/100 PY). The cumulative incidence of patients undergoing catheter ablation of AF was 6.5% at 10 years (1.2/100 PY). CONCLUSIONS: Patients hospitalized for AF or flutter had high death rates with an average 2.6-year loss in life expectancy. Moreover, re-hospitalizations for AF or flutter and related outcomes such as heart failure and stroke were common with catheter ablation used infrequently for treatment, which warrant further actions.

ABSTRACT

Utrophin (UTRN), known as a tumor suppressor, potentially regulates tumor development and the immune microenvironment. However, its impact on breast cancer's development and treatment remains unstudied. We conducted a thorough examination of UTRN using both bioinformatic and in vitro experiments in this study. We discovered UTRN expression decreased in breast cancer compared to standard samples. High UTRN expression correlated with better prognosis. Drug sensitivity tests and RT-qPCR assays revealed UTRN's pivotal role in tamoxifen resistance. Furthermore, the Kruskal-Wallis rank test indicated UTRN's potential as a valuable diagnostic biomarker for breast cancer and its utility in detecting T stage of breast cancer. Additionally, our results demonstrated UTRN's close association with immune cells, inhibitors, stimulators, receptors, and chemokines in breast cancer (BRCA). This research provides a novel perspective on UTRN's role in breast cancer's prognostic and therapeutic value. Low UTRN expression may contribute to tamoxifen resistance and a poor prognosis. Specifically, UTRN can improve clinical decision-making and raise the diagnosis accuracy of breast cancer.

ABSTRACT

Multifunctional drug delivery systems (DDS) are in high demand for effectively targeting specific cells, necessitating excellent biocompatibility, precise release mechanisms, and sustained release capabilities. The hollow multishelled structure (HoMS) presents a promising solution, integrating structural and compositional design for efficient DDS development amidst complex cellular environments. Herein, starting from a Fe-based metal-organic framework (MOF), amorphous coordination polymers (CP) composited HoMS with controlled shell numbers are fabricated by balancing the rate of MOF decomposition and shell formation. Fe-CP HoMS loaded with DOX is utilized for synergistic chemotherapy and chemodynamic therapy, offering excellent responsive drug release capability (excellent pH-triggered drug release 82% within 72 h at pH 5.0 solution with doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity of 284 mg g-1). In addition to its potent chemotherapy attributes, Fe-CP-HoMS possesses chemodynamic therapy potential by continuously catalyzing H2O2 to generate ·OH species within cancer cells, thus effectively inhibiting cancer cell proliferation. DOX@3S-Fe-CP-HoMS, at a concentration of 12.5 µg mL-1, demonstrates significant inhibitory effects on cancer cells while maintaining minimal cytotoxicity toward normal cells. It is envisioned that CP-HoMS could serve as an effective and biocompatible platform for the advancement of intelligent drug delivery systems in the realm of cancer therapy.

RATIONALE: Primary cardiac angiosarcoma (PCA) is a rare and fatal disease with a poor prognosis. Whether the survival of PCA patients can be prolonged with additional treatment following complete surgical excision is controversial. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this case study, a 52-year-old male complained of chest tightness and pain for 7 days before admission into the hospital. Subsequently, he revisited the hospital because of dizziness and headache. DIAGNOSES: Initially, the patient was diagnosed with PCA in the right atrium by thoracic computed tomography (CT). Palliative resection identified brain, lung, and liver metastases. INTERVENTION: The patient accepted multimodal combination therapy, including first-line chemotherapy and then second-line anlotinib concurrent with brain radiotherapy and immunotherapy. OUTCOME: Although anlotinib combined with brain radiotherapy controlled the growth of intracranial lesions, progression-free survival (PFS) was only 5 months, and the overall survival (OS) was only 12 months. LESSON: The treatment for metastatic PCA needs an in-depth exploration.
