ABSTRACT

Application of dynamic chaos for the illumination of the surrounding space by artificial incoherent sources of microwave radiation with the purpose of its subsequent observation using special receiving equipment is considered. An incoherent broadband microwave radiation field is provided by "radio light lamps" based on dynamic chaos generators. The radio light is received with specially designed sensitive elements that combine the properties of an envelope detector in communication systems and a radiometer. It is shown that with the help of directional antennas connected to these sensitive elements, it is possible to create receivers with spatial resolution for visualizing a part of the surrounding space in artificial radio light. Radio light images of a room have been obtained. The possibility to detect changes associated with the emergence of new objects on these images is demonstrated.

ABSTRACT

Depression is one the most common form of mental diseases. Due to epidemiological studies, it is common in different age groups including young people. Depression pathogenesis from the point of system perspective view consists of morphofunctional and pathopsychological components. The former can be divided into neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, neurochemical parts. Laboratory animals as experimental models are an invaluable tool for investigating pathogenesis of depressive disorders and creating potential treatments. Aim of study - to elucidate behavioral differences in Danio rerio exposed to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). In our study Danio rerio was used as an experimental model of depression. In fish forming schools during separation in pairs, anxious and aggressive behavior towards each other was manifested. It contributes to formation of dominant-subordinate relationships. Before administration of fluoxetine and sertraline in all the groups studied, the lower level of fish swimming was observed. They were hyperactive. Aggressive behavior towards each other was not observed. On the third day of the experiment behavior of the fish in groups with fluoxetine and sertraline was different. In group with sertraline 25% of fishes come up to average level. In group with fluoxetine fishes remained at the bottom of the aquarium. On the fifth day of the experiment in the group with sertraline 25% of fishes had an abnormal craniocaudal position of the body in space.

ABSTRACT

Combining various substrates for assessment of enzymatic activity, we have studied the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in rat plasma and serum during postnatal ontogeny and aging. During period of weaning, the GPx activity dramatically increases and reaches the almost adult levels to 1,5 months of age. GPx activity is relatively stable in adult rats and retains its high levels in aging rats for a long time. With reduced homocysteine (but not with reduced glutathione) as a GPx substrate, the decrease of GPx activity to 23-26 months of age was revealed. The dramatic increase of GPx activity in plasma from 0,5 to 1-1,5 months of age can be an adaptation to consumption of solid food that may contain the substances inducing oxidative stress. Probably at sufficient consumption of selenium, the decrease of GPx activity in rat plasma occurs only at deep old age and could be considered as an indicator of physiological aging.

ABSTRACT

Earlier it has been shown that extracellular glutathione peroxidase (GPx3) from human plasma is able to use cysteine (Cys-SH) instead of glutathione (GSH) as a thiol substrate. In the present study, the ability of rat plasma to utilize not only GSH, but also Cys-SH and homocysteine (Hcy-SH), in the thiol peroxidase reaction has been confirmed. The molar ratio between thiol and H2O2 in the catalyzed reaction was 2:1. The specific activity increased with fractionation of proteins. At a fixed thiol concentration of 0.23 mM, the saturation by H2O2 with vmax app of 100, 128, and 132 nmol H2O2 / s per 1 ml of plasma was found for DL-Cys-SH, L-GSH, and DL-Hcy-SH, respectively. Rank distributions of activities towards all three thiol substrates within plasma protein fractions are fully identical (the probability of random full coincidence was less than 0.01). The statistical analysis confirms that Cys-SH peroxidase, Hcy-SH peroxidase, and GSH peroxidase activities are closely associated with each other. The most probable outcome of this result is the ability of rat GPx3 to utilize all three thiols as substrates for oxidation. Probably, thiol peroxidase is a participant of formation of plasma cystine (Cys-SS-Cys) from Cys-SH in plasma. If the forms of Hcy exhibit different toxic effects, it can be suggested that thiol peroxidase regulates Hcy toxicity in hyperhomocysteinemia through Hcy-SH oxidation to homocystine (Hcy-SS-Hcy).

ABSTRACT

Using benzylamine as a substrate, the amine oxidase activity was determined in the pineal gland of adult rats and compared with the same activity in brain areas and pituitary. Two groups of rats aged 6-8 and 14-15 months were also compared on the basis of this activity. Benzylamine deaminating activity in the pineal gland was significantly higher than in the area preoptica medialis, the corpus mamillare, the tuberculum olfactorium, and the hypophysis, and lower than in the eminentia mediana. The significant increase of the activity in the pineal gland in animals of age from 6-8 to 14-15-months was revealed. Benzylamine deaminating activity in the pineal gland was totally inhibited by 0,002 mM R deprenyl, indicating the B type monoamine oxidase (MAO B) activity. Age-associated increase of MAO B activity in the pineal gland accompanied by decrease of glutathione peroxidase activity, reported earlier, can promote the oxidative damage in the pineal gland during aging.

ABSTRACT

The research deals with the effect of low-intensity 900 MHz frequency electromagnetic radiation (EMR), power density 25 µW/cm2, on the following rat brain and blood serum enzyme activities: creatine kinase (CK), playing a central role in the process of storing and distributing the cell energy, as well as alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) that play a key role in providing the conjunction of carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism. The comparative analysis of the changes in the enzyme activity studied at different times following the two-hour single, as well as fractional, radiation equivalent of the total time showed that the most radiosensitive enzyme is the brain creatine kinase, which may then be recommended as a marker of the radio frequency radiation impact. According to the analysis of the changing dynamics of the CK, ALT and AST activity level, with time these changes acquire the adaptive character and are directed to compensate the damaged cell energy metabolism.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of computed tomography (CT) scans on diagnosis and management of patients with suspected appendicitis. METHODS: Retrospective 2-year review of 1,630 patients with suspected appendicitis, categorized into three groups based on the likelihood (Alvarado scores) of having appendicitis. Group 1: low likelihood (Alvarado score < or =4); group 2: intermediate likelihood (Alvarado scores 5-7), and group 3: high likelihood (Alvarado score > or = 8). CT scan utilization, hospital course, and final pathology were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: More patients received a CT scan in 2006 as compared with 2005 (60 vs. 52%; p = 0.001). The overall appendectomy rate was similar between the 2 years (57% in 2005 vs. 57% in 2006; p = 0.995). The overall appendectomy rate in patients with a CT was significantly higher as compared with those without (60 vs. 53%; p = 0.002). The appendectomy rate in patients with Alvarado scores < or =4 and no CT scan was significantly lower than in those with a CT scan (12 vs. 48%; p < 0.0001). The overall negative appendectomy rate in patients with a CT scan was similar to that in those without: 31/546 (6%) vs. 23/383 (6%). CONCLUSIONS: CT scan utilization increased the appendectomy rate only in patients with a low clinical suspicion for appendicitis. Preoperative CT scans did not decrease the negative appendectomy rate.

Antisera were raised in rabbits against L chains, isolated from mouse myeloma protein MOPC21 (gamma 1, chi V chi 15 group). Specific antibodies for the V and C domain of MOPC21 L chain were obtained by cross-immunoadsorption of the antisera. The pure anti-V and anti-C antibodies were fixed on diazocellulose and used as immunosorbents. The inhibitory capacity of L chin-monomers and dimers isolated from the L chain preparation was compared to that of intact IgG1 using binding inhibition of 125I-labeled IgG1 on the antibody-containing immunosorbents. It was established that changes of IgG1 quaternary structure influences the conformational state of the L chain V domain only. The inhibitory capacity of the V domain is 1000-fold lower in L monomers, if compared with native IgG1, and only 10-fold lower than in L dimers. The inhibiting capacity of the C domain, however, does not differ in L monomers and intact IgG1. Thus the conformational rigidity of the C domain co-exists with conformational flexibility of the V domain on the same polypeptide chain. We tried to estimate the content of MOPC21 V1-like normal IgG in mouse serum of 6 inbred strains using antibodies against the V1 domain. Data obtained by inhibition of radioimmunoadsorption, indicate that in C57BL/6 mice 0.08% of normal serum Ig carries a V1 region which is idiotypically related to the V1 of MOPC21. In serum Ig of BALB/c mice the percentage is 0.16.
