ABSTRACT

Robusta coffee blossom honey stands as a key regional product in Dak Lak province, Vietnam. Despite its significance, there exists a dearth of scientific data for assessing its quality. This study aims to fill this gap by characterizing the physicochemical properties and biological activities of coffee blossom honeys from three distinct sub-regions within Dak Lak province, Vietnam. These activities include ferric reducing power (FRP), DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging, as well as tyrosinase inhibitory activities. Moreover, the study compares these honey samples with other popular varieties in Vietnam, such as Lychee and Longan honeys. The physicochemical parameters of the honey samples meet the standards set by Codex Alimentarius 2001. Through UPLC analysis, eleven compounds were identified, with caffeine serving as a marker for coffee honey. Furthermore, by employing multiple factor analysis (MFA), it was observed that certain physicochemical properties correlate positively with tyrosinase inhibitory, DPPH, ABTS free radicals scavenging activities, and FRP. Notably, tyrosinase inhibitory activity exhibited a positive correlation with antioxidant activity. These findings underscore the high quality of Coffea robusta honey, showcasing its potent antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities.

ABSTRACT

Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Ait.) Hassk (RTH) is a plant distributed mainly in Southeast Asia that has long been used as a food or a folk remedy for various ailments. Anthocyanins extracted from RTH have received the attention of researchers as well as manufacturers in exploiting the application of this plant for commercial purposes. Several extraction methods have been performed, however, concerns about new extraction methods, extraction conditions as well as stability of anthocyanins during storage are issues that need to be evaluated. In this study, the process of extracting anthocyanins by microwave method and the stability of anthocyanins in RTH extraction were investigated. For the extraction method, the influence of solvent concentration (30-70%), application ratio (10:1-1:1 mL/g), microwave power (100-500W), and time (1-9 min) have been evaluated. A first-order kinetic model was also used to evaluate the variation of anthocyanin content during storage at different conditions, including 5 °C (refrigerator), 30 °C (room temperature), and 45 °C (incubator). The study results showed that the anthocyanin content had the greatest value of 137.54 mg/L when extracted with 50% ethanol solvent with the material/solvent ratio of 1:3 (g/ml) microwave power is 200W for 5 min. The first-order decomposition kinetics model showed that the t1/2 values of the RTH extract were 69.64, 28.66, and 19.8, respectively, for the storage temperatures of 5 °C, 30 °C, and 45 °C, respectively. During storage, anthocyanin content tends to decrease more rapidly under high-temperature conditions. In addition, a close correlation between anthocyanin content and antioxidant capacity was recorded at a high significance level R2 > 0.98.

For a long time, ethnic minorities in Ninh Thuan province have combined "Day Khai" (Coptosapelta flavescens Korth) with many other medicinal herbs, creating an esoteric remedy called "Cao Khai"-an aqueous extract from Day Khai. This study tested an aqueous extract from "Day Khai" for total phenolics, total flavonoids, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity in an in vivo mice model. The aqueous extracts of raw materials C. flavescens collected in different regions were found to have phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity in vitro according to DPPH, ABTS, RP, TAC, and FRAP methods. This study evaluated the effect of C. flavescens on arthritis of Complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA) induced-mice by observing changes in the degree of edema in the leg joints blood index and histology. The findings indicated that the "Cao Khai" had anti-inflammatory benefits and lowered the inflammatory symptoms in mice equivalent to Mobic medications (p < 0.05) while also limiting cartilage tissue damage after 14 days of usage. As a result, it is clear that "Cao Khai" can be considered a medicinal herb with tremendous potential for usage as an addition to illness therapy that should be protected and cultivated.

ABSTRACT

In this work, we consider the electronic and optical properties of chemically functionalized InN monolayers with F and Cl atoms (i.e., F-InN-F, F-InN-Cl, Cl-InN-F, Cl-InN-Cl monolayers) using first-principles calculations. The adsorption of the F and Cl atoms on the InN monolayer is determined to be chemically stable and the F-InN-F monolayer is most likely to occur. Our calculations show that the chemical functionalization with Cl and F atoms not only breaks the planar structure of InN monolayer but also increases its band gap. By using both Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) and the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functionals, all four models of chemically functionalized InN monolayers are found to be semiconductors with direct energy gaps and these gaps depend on the constituent species. When the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) was included, the energy gap of these monolayers was reduced and an energy splitting was found at the Γ-point in the valence band. Chemically functionalized InN monolayers can absorb light in a wide region, especially the F-InN-F and Cl-InN-F monolayers have a strong ability to absorb the visible light. Our findings reveal that the chemically functionalized InN monolayers have potential applications in next-generation optoelectronic devices.
