ABSTRACT
RATIONALE: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by continuous inflammation of the colonic mucosa. Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a chronic liver disease characterized by hypergammaglobulinemia, circulating autoantibodies, interface hepatitis, and favorable response to immunosuppression. An association between IBD and AIH is uncommon, and experts have suggested that in patients with overlapping IBD and AIH, the anti-tumor necrosis factor agents can be used. Therefore, this study reports a rare case of a patient with liver cirrhosis due to AIH and UC refractory to conventional treatment and discusses the risks and benefits of using anti-tumor necrosis factor in both conditions. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 28-year-old female presented with symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal pain, asthenia, and inappetence, accompanied by abdominal collateral circulation, anemia, alteration of liver enzymes, and elevation of C-reactive protein levels. DIAGNOSES: The patient underwent a liver biopsy, which was consistent with liver cirrhosis due to AIH. Colonoscopy showed an inflammatory process throughout the colon, compatible with moderately active UC. INTERVENTIONS: The patient received mesalazine, azathioprine, and corticotherapy, with no control of the inflammatory process. Faced with refractoriness to drug treatment and side effects of corticosteroids with an increased risk of severe infection due to cirrhosis, we opted to use infliximab for the treatment of UC. The patient presented with a clinical response and infliximab therapy was maintained. OUTCOMES: Eight months after starting infliximab therapy, the patient developed pneumonia with complications from disseminated intravascular coagulation and died. LESSONS SUBSECTIONS: AIH is a rare cause of elevated transaminase levels in patients with UC. The best treatment to control the 2 conditions should be evaluated with vigilance for the side effects of medications, mainly infections, especially in patients with cirrhosis.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects young adults of reproductive age, and questions related to pregnancy and breastfeeding are common in clinical practice. Most medications used to treat IBD are considered safe during pregnancy, except methotrexate and small molecules such as tofacitinib. Despite few studies regarding vedolizumab (VDZ) safety, it appears to be safe during pregnancy. Therefore, this study aimed to report the management of ulcerative colitis in pregnant patient refractory to anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents using VDZ. Case Report: A female, 38 years old, with ulcerative colitis was refractory to conventional treatment with mesalazine, sulfasalazine, and azathioprine. She was hospitalized at six weeks of gestation with severe acute colitis requiring the use of infliximab (IFX) to induce remission. She had a spontaneous abortion at nine weeks of gestation after the second dose of IFX. Since there was no endoscopic improvement after six months of IFX treatment, VDZ treatment was initiated. During the VDZ infusion period, the patient discovered that she was pregnant with twins, leading to the discussion of the risks and benefits of continuing the VDZ. The patient presented with disease clinical remission with the use of VDZ, and the babies were born at 34 weeks of gestation without complications. Breastfeeding was also performed without complications. Conclusion: Continued VDZ medication is safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with adverse events similar to anti-TNF therapy.

PURPOSE: Create a checklist of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) based on relevant categories for the development of speech and language, according to the perception of parents and speech therapists. METHODS: Pilot application and research were carried out. 100 parents of preschool children with typical language/cognition development and 57 language specialist speech therapists participated in the survey. A questionnaire was created with 199 ICF categories of body function components, activities and participation, and environmental factors. Each category was scored as: indispensable (2); important (1) or unimportant (0). Statistical analysis was performed (descriptive, sum, cluster/K-means and Mann-Whitney method). RESULTS: With the sum of the points (essential, important and unimportant) and the number of responses essential, the most relevant categories were identified for each group of respondents, as well as the set of categories in common (72 considered to have the greatest influence). The common list to the groups included the three components: body functions (30 categories/40% of the total), activities and participation (35/49.29%) and environmental factors (seven/13.20%). From the selected categories, 58.33% presented statistically significant results between the groups, regarding the relevance given. CONCLUSIONS: The categories were considered with different scores between the groups: those of body functions were more scored by speech therapists, while those of environmental factors by parents. Thus, it was possible to create a checklist from the identification of the most relevant categories for the development of speech and language, in preschool age, contemplating the components of body functions, activities and participation and environmental factors.

Arabinoxylans (AXs) are compounds with high nutritional value and applicability, including prebiotics or supplementary ingredients, in food manufacturing industries. Unfortunately, the recovery of AXs may require advanced separation and integrated strategies. Here, an analysis of the emerging techniques to extract AXs from cereals and their by-products is discussed. This review covers distinct methods implemented over the last 2-3 years, identifying that the type of method, extraction source, AX physicochemical properties and pre-treatment conditions are the main factors influencing the recovery yield. Alkaline extraction is among the most used methods nowadays, mostly due to its simplicity and high recovery yield. Concurrently, recovered AXs applied in food applications is timely reviewed, such as potential bread ingredient, prebiotic and as a wall material for probiotic encapsulation, in beer and non-alcoholic beverage manufacturing, complementary ingredient in bakery products and cookies, improvers in Chinese noodles, 3D food printing and designing of nanostructures for delivery platforms.

Obtaining sufficient and high-quality genomic DNA from sludge samples is a fundamental issue of feasibility and comparability in genomic studies of microbial diversity. Commercial kits for soil are often used for the extraction of gDNA from sludge samples due to the lack of specific kits. However, the evaluation of the performance of commercial kits for sludge DNA extraction is scarce and optimization of these methods to obtain a high quantity and quality of DNA is necessary, especially for downstream genomic sequencing. Sequential batch reactors (SBRs) loaded with lignocellulosic biomass are used for the synthesis of renewable resources such as levulinic acid (LA), adipic acid (AA), and polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), and the biochemical synthesis of these compounds is conducted through the inoculation of microbes present in the residual activated sludge (AS) obtained from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. To characterize these microbes, the extraction of DNA from residual sewage sludge was conducted with three different commercial kits: Nucleospin® Soil from Macherey-Nagel, DNEasy® PowerSoil® from Qiagen, and E.Z.N.A.® Plant DNA Kit from Omega BIO-TEK. Nevertheless, to obtain the highest load and quality of DNA for next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis, different pretreatments and different combinations of these pretreatments were used. The pretreatments considered were an ultrasonic bath and a temperature of 80 °C, together and separately with different incubation time periods of 30, 60, and 90 min. The results obtained suggest a significant improvement in the efficiency and quality of DNA extraction with the three commercial extraction kits when used together with the ultrasonic bath and 80 °C for 60 min. Here, we were able to prove that physical pretreatments are a viable alternative to chemical lysis for DNA extraction from complex samples such as sludge.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the health-related quality of life (QOL) in children with cerebral palsy (CP) associated with congenital Zika infection. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of a consecutive series of children, followed in a referral multicentric rehabilitation network in Brazil. We invited the caregivers to respond to the Brazilian version of the Caregiver Priorities & Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILDTM) questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0™. We used absolute and relative frequencies for categorical variables and mean and standard deviation for continuous variables. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 193 children, at mean age of 50.3±7.6 months. We observed a predominance of children with cerebral palsy (CP) with Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level V (93.7%). Epilepsy (88.4%) was the most common comorbidity. CPCHILDTM mean scores were activities of daily living (ADL)/personal care 43.2±12.6; positioning, transferring and mobility 33.7±16.5; comfort and emotions 84.4±15.2; communication and social interaction (CoSI) 48.2±24.3; health 70.9±17.1; and overall quality of life (OQOL) 72.1±17.1. Total score was 54.8±11.3. CONCLUSIONS: Among children with cerebral palsy (CP) related to congenital Zika syndrome, the quality of life (QOL) scores were very similar to other populations with cerebral palsy (CP). The activities of positioning, transferring and mobility had the greatest impact on health-related quality of life (QOL). Rehabilitation strategies and public policies should prioritize aspects related to mobility for this population.

(1) Background: Malignant gliomas are aggressive tumors characterized by fast cellular growth and highly invasive properties. Despite all biological and clinical advances in therapy, the standard treatment remains essentially palliative. Therefore, searching for alternative therapies that minimize adverse symptoms and improve glioblastoma patients' outcomes is imperative. Natural products represent an essential source in the discovery of such new drugs. Plants from the cerrado biome have been receiving increased attention due to the presence of secondary metabolites with significant therapeutic potential. (2) Aim: This study provides data on the cytotoxic potential of 13 leaf extracts obtained from plants of 5 families (Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Fabaceae, Melastomataceae e Siparunaceae) found in the Brazilian cerrado biome on a panel of 5 glioma cell lines and one normal astrocyte. (3) Methods: The effect of crude extracts on cell viability was evaluated by MTS assay. Mass spectrometry (ESI FT-ICR MS) was performed to identify the secondary metabolites classes presented in the crude extracts and partitions. (4) Results: Our results revealed the cytotoxic potential of Melastomataceae species Miconia cuspidata, Miconia albicans, and Miconia chamissois. Additionally, comparing the four partitions obtained from M. chamissois crude extract indicates that the chloroform partition had the greatest cytotoxic activity against the glioma cell lines. The partitions also showed a mean IC50 close to chemotherapy, temozolomide; nevertheless, lower toxicity against normal astrocytes. Analysis of secondary metabolites classes presented in these crude extracts and partitions indicates the presence of phenolic compounds. (5) Conclusions: These findings highlight M. chamissois chloroform partition as a promising component and may guide the search for the development of additional new anticancer therapies.

ABSTRACT Objective: This study aimed to translate, and perform a cross-cultural adaptation, and validation of the Vancouver Symptom Score (VSS) for bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) for Brazilian children and adolescents Materials and Methods: Six steps were performed for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation: (1) translation, (2) synthesis of translations, (3) back-translation, (4) pre-final version of the translated instrument, (5) pilot test and degree of comprehensibility and (6) elaboration of the Brazilian version of the VSS. For validation, the Brazilian Dysfunctional Voiding Score (DVSS) questionnaire was used. Results: Validation was performed on a sample of 107 children and adolescents with a mean age of 9.2 ± 2.84 years, presenting BBD and 107 without BBD (control group-CG). There was a positive correlation (r = 0.91, 95% CI 0.88 to 0.93, p < 0.0001) between total VSS score and total DVSS score. VSS was higher in patients with BBD (p < 0.0001). The internal consistency estimated by Cronbach's alpha was 0.87 for patients with BBD. The VSS showed excellent diagnostic accuracy in detecting cases, with an area under the ROC curve of 98% (95% CI 0.96 to 0.99, p < 0.001). A cut-off value of >11 points produced a sensitivity of 100% (95% CI 96.4% to 100%) and a specificity of 91.8% (95% CI 85.1% to 95.6%). Conclusion: The translated, cross-culturally adapted, and validated VSS for the Brazilian population is a reliable and valid tool to identify symptoms of BBD in children and adolescents aged five to 16 years, whose first language is Brazilian Portuguese.

The use of mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) is seen as an attractive strategy for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production. In order to optimize the MMC-PHA production process, tools are required to improve our understanding of the physiological state of the PHA-storing microorganisms within the MMC. In the present study, we explored the use of flow cytometry to analyse the metabolic state and polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) content of the microorganisms from an MMC-PHA production process. A sequencing batch reactor under a feast and famine regime was used to enrich an MMC with PHB-storing microorganisms. Interestingly, once the PHB-storing microorganisms are selected, the level of PHB accumulation depends largely on the metabolic state of these microorganisms and not exclusively on the consortium composition. These results demonstrate that flow cytometry is a powerful tool to help to understand the PHA storage response of an MMC-PHA production process. KEY POINTS: ⢠Flow cytometry allows to measure PHB content and metabolic activity over time. ⢠Microorganisms showing high PHB content also have high metabolic activity. ⢠PHB producers with low metabolic activity show low PHB content.

Métodos: Estudo transversal de série consecutiva de casos de crianças acompanhadas em uma rede multicêntrica de reabilitação no Brasil. Convidamos o(s) cuidador(es) a responder à versão brasileira do Caregiver Priorities & Child Health Index of Life with Disabilities (CPCHILDTM). A análise estatística foi realizada com o pacote estatístico Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 26.0™. Para variáveis categóricas, foram utilizadas frequências absolutas e relativas e, para variáveis contínuas, média e desvio padrão. Resultados: Cento e noventa e três crianças, com idade média de 50,3±7,6 meses, foram incluídas. Observou-se predomínio de crianças com paralisia cerebral Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) nível V (93,7%). Epilepsia (88,4%) foi a comorbidade mais comum. As pontuações médias do CPCHILDTM foram: atividades de vida diária/cuidados pessoais 43,2±12,6; posicionamento, transferência e mobilidade 33,7±16,5; conforto e emoções 84,4±15,2; comunicação e interação social 48,2±24,3; saúde 70,9±17,1; e qualidade de vida geral 72,1±17,1. A pontuação total foi 54,8±11,3. Conclusões: Entre as crianças com paralisia cerebral relacionada à síndrome do zika congênita, as atividades de posicionamento, transferência e mobilidade tiveram maior impacto na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde, semelhantemente a outras etiologias de paralisia cerebral. As estratégias de reabilitação e as políticas públicas devem priorizar os aspectos relacionados à mobilidade dessa população.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify, through a scoping review, the categories of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health described in studies on aphasia. Methods: the search was performed by DECs, MeSH terms and free terms related to the "International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health" and "aphasia" in five databases, EMBASE, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science, and four search engines of grey literature. The PRISMA recommendations were used. EndNote and Rayyan managers were used to remove duplicates and read titles, abstracts and full studies. Papers that contained "aphasia" and some aspect from the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health were eligible, published from 2001. The data recorded were: type of study, level of evidence, sample, objectives and categories. Literature Review: 1,366 studies were located in the databases and 341 in the grey literature. The mostly described first level categories in the 13 selected studies were: Structures of the Nervous System (Brain); Mental Functions (Language); Communication (Conversation); Support and Relationships (Immediate Family). Gender and age were some of the most identified Personal Factors. Conclusion: this review provides support to the use of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for performance with people with aphasia.
RESUMO Objetivo: identificar, por meio de uma revisão de escopo, as categorias da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde descritas em estudos sobre as afasias. Métodos: foi realizada uma busca nas bases de dados EMBASE, LILACS, PubMed, Scopus e Web of Science e em quatro buscadores da literatura cinzenta a partir dos DECs, termos Mesh e termos livres relacionados à "International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health" e à "aphasia". As recomendações do PRISMA foram utilizadas. Os gerenciadores EndNote e Rayyan foram usados para remoção das duplicatas e para a leitura dos títulos, resumos e textos completos. Foram elegíveis os trabalhos que incluíam "afasia" e algum conceito da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde; publicados a partir de 2001. As informações registradas foram: tipo de estudo, nível de evidência, amostra, objetivos e categorias. Revisão de Literatura: foram localizados 1366 trabalhos nas bases de dados e 341 na literatura cinzenta. As categorias de primeiro nível mais descritas nos 13 estudos selecionados foram: Estruturas do Sistema Nervoso (Cérebro); Funções Mentais (Linguagem); Comunicação (Conversação); Apoio e Relacionamentos (Família Nuclear). Sexo e idade foram alguns dos Fatores Pessoais mais identificados. Conclusão: esta revisão fornece suporte para recomendar o uso da Classificação Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saúde na atuação com pessoas com afasia.
ABSTRACT
Cervical cancer is the third most common in Brazilian women. The chemotherapy used for the treatment of this disease can cause many side effects; then, to overcome this problem, new treatment options are necessary. Natural compounds represent one of the most promising sources for the development of new drugs. In this study, 13 different species of 6 families from the Brazilian Cerrado vegetation biome were screened against human cervical cancer cell lines (CCC). Some of these species were also evaluated in one normal keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT). The effect of crude extracts on cell viability was evaluated by a colorimetric method (MTS assay). Extracts from Annona crassiflora, Miconia albicans, Miconia chamissois, Stryphnodendron adstringens, Tapirira guianensis, Xylopia aromatica, and Achyrocline alata showed half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values < 30 µg/mL for at least one CCC. A. crassiflora and S. adstringens extracts were selective for CCC. Mass spectrometry (Electrospray Ionization Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer (ESI FT-ICR MS)) of A. crassiflora identified fatty acids and flavonols as secondary compounds. One of the A. crassiflora fractions, 7C24 (from chloroform partition), increased H2AX phosphorylation (suggesting DNA damage), PARP cleavage, and cell cycle arrest in CCC. Kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside and oleic acid were bioactive molecules identified in 7C24 fraction. These findings emphasize the importance of investigating bioactive molecules from natural sources for developing new anti-cancer drugs.

This paper aimed at to evaluate the qualitative effects of climatic seasonality in a subtropical lagoon, using Discriminant Analysis, as well to identify the most sensitive and responsible parameters for these changes. The Mirim Lagoon watershed is one of the main transboundary basins in South America and is of great economic importance for the region because its waters are used for irrigation of rice fields and for the potable water supply to populations close to it, in this way, these uses may affect the quality of the basin waters. The data used in the study were provided and collected by the Mirim Lagoon Development Agency. Water quality parameters were selected in a five-year database and submitted to statistical tests that demonstrated their distinctions throughout the climatic seasons. The results showed that the parameters temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus differ statically between the four climatic seasons. Were also identified four discriminative parameters between the seasons, being them dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus. In this way, it can be concluded that the seasonality mainly affects anthropogenic pollution sources such as agricultural activities and domestic discharges.

BACKGROUND: Uruguay passed Law 19.172 on December 20, 2013, thus enabling the State to regulate the production, distribution, sale, and consumption of cannabis. OBJECTIVES: to determine the change in maternal self-report of marijuana, tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine use during pregnancy between 2013 and 2016. METHODS: cross-sectional, descriptive, analytical study between 2013 and 2016. The sample consists of pregnant woman who delivered and received immediate postpartum care at the Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell in Montevideo, Uruguay. The instrument was a protocolized survey that assessed outcomes such as sociodemographic level, years of formal education, data on pregnancy, childbirth, newborn, and substance use before and during pregnancy. RESULTS: the sample consisted of 577 pregnant women, 319 corresponding to interviews conducted in 2013 and 258 in 2016. Regarding alcohol intake, 76 (23.82%) women reported drinking while pregnant in 2013, whereas in 2016, 91 (35.3%) (p=.003) did so. As for tobacco, 59 (43%) quit smoking when they found out about their pregnancy in 2013, and 69 (60%) quit in 2016 (p=.008). In 2013, 41 women (12.85%) smoked marijuana until they discovered their pregnancy, and 79 (30%) did so in 2016 (p < .001). The use of cocaine and its derivatives did not change significantly between 2013 and 2016. CONCLUSIONS: between 2013 and 2016, there was a significant increase in the self-report of marijuana and alcohol consumption before and during pregnancy. The consumption of cocaine and cocaine base paste remained stable during this period. Tobacco use decreased significantly in pregnant women.
Introducción: Uruguay es el primer país en modificar la legislación sobre el consumo recreativo de cannabis, mediante la Ley 19.172 del 20 de diciembre de 2013, otorgando al Estado la potestad de regular su producción y comercialización. Objetivo: evaluar las prevalencias de la autodeclaración del consumo de marihuana, tabaco, alcohol, cocaína y derivados y su evolución temporal en embarazadas para los años 2013 y 2016. Metodología: estudio descriptivo, transversal y analítico, durante dos períodos de tiempo, en 2013 y 2016. Se incluyeron mujeres que tuvieron su parto y puerperio inmediato en el Centro Hospitalario Pereira Rossell (CHPR) de Montevideo, Uruguay. Se realizó una encuesta protocolizada sobre su nivel sociodemográfico, años de educación formal, datos del embarazo, parto, recién nacido y consumo de sustancias antes y durante la gestación. Resultados: en la investigación participaron 577 mujeres, 319 correspondientes a las entrevistas realizadas en el año 2013 y 258 en 2016. Respecto al alcohol, 76 (23,82%) mujeres declaran su consumo durante el embarazo en 2013, mientras que, en 2016, 91 (35,3%) (p=0,003). En cuanto al tabaco, 59 (43%) dejaron de fumar al enterarse del embarazo en 2013 y 69 (60%) en 2016 (p=0,008). En 2013, 41 mujeres (12,85%) fumaron marihuana hasta saber del embarazo y 79 (30%) en 2016 (p <0,001). Durante la gestación, en 2013 declararon fumar marihuana 5 mujeres (1,57%), mientras que en 2016 fueron 28 (10,85%) (p <0,001). El uso de cocaína y pasta base de cocaína (PBC) no cambió significativamente entre 2013 y 2016. Conclusiones: Entre los años 2013 y 2016 se observó un aumento significativo en la autodeclaración del consumo de marihuana y alcohol antes y durante el embarazo. El consumo de cocaína y pasta base de cocaína se mantuvo estable en ese periodo. El consumo de tabaco disminuyó significativamente en mujeres embarazadas.

This study focused on detecting diarrheagenic Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC or STEC:EPEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), and enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) in raw milk, water, and cattle feces sampled from non-technified dairy farms located in the northeastern São Paulo State, Brazil. Thirty-six water samples were collected at different points, namely, water wells (8 samples), water intended for human consumption (8 samples), water from milking parlor (8 samples), and water intended for animal consumption (7 samples), headwaters (1 sample), rivers (3 samples), and reservoirs (1 sample). Three raw milk samples were taken directly from bulk tanks in each farm, totalizing 24 samples. Feces samples were collected using rectal swabs from 160 bovines (20 animals per farm). E. coli was detected in 128 feces samples (80%), 16 raw milk samples (66.67%), and 20 water samples (55.56%). STEC (26 samples, 16.25%), EPEC (10 samples, 6.25%), STEC: EPEC (5 samples, 3.13%), and STEC: ETEC (1 sample, 0.63%) were the most prevalent strains detected in samples from cattle feces. EPEC, STEC, and STEC: EPEC strains were detected in 4.17% (1 sample), 16.67% (4 samples), and 4.17% (1 sample) of raw milk samples, respectively. STEC strains were detected in water used in the milking parlor, while no EAEC strain was detected. As a conclusion, cattle feces are important contamination sources of pathogenic E. coli in non-technified dairy farms and, consequently, cross-contamination among feces, water, and/or raw milk can occur. The use of quality water and hygienic practices during milking are recommended to avoid contamination since pathogens can be transmitted to humans via raw milk or raw milk cheese ingestion.(AU)
Este estudo teve como objetivo realizar a detecção de Escherichia coli diarreiogênica (EPEC, STEC, ETEC e EAEC) em leite, água e fezes bovinas em pequenas propriedades leiteiras localizadas na Região Nordeste do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. E. coli foi detectada em amostras obtidas de fezes (80%), leite cru (66,67%) e água (55,56%). STEC, EPEC, STEC:EPEC e STEC:ETEC foram as cepas mais prevalentes em amostras de fezes bovinas, respectivamente. Em relação ao leite cru, cepas de EPEC, STEC e STEC:EPEC foram detectadas em 4,17%, 16,67% e 4,17% das amostras, respectivamente. Ainda, detectou-se STEC na amostra de água utilizada na sala de ordenha, enquanto EAEC não foi detectada em nenhuma amostra. Conclui-se que fezes de bovinos é uma importante fonte de contaminação de E. coli patogênicas em propriedades leiteiras e podem consequentemente contaminar o leite cru e água. A importância da qualidade da água e da adoção efetiva de práticas higiênicas durante a obtenção do leite para evitar a contaminação são recomendadas devido à possibilidade de transmissão de microorganismos patogênicos a seres humanos devido a ingestão de leite cru ou queijos produzidos a partir de leite não pasteurizado.(AU)

Sendo assim, os padrões produtivos encontrados na região, tendem a não ser os mesmos encontrados no restante do país. Sob esta ótica, buscou-se levantar informações de produção e qualidade do leite encontrado nas propriedades sulinas que fazem uso da raça Jersey. Através dessa raça sabidamente diferenciada pela qualidade do seu leite, objetivou-se verificar seu desempenho médio ao longo das estações do ano, e checando se a mesma consegue suprir as demandas de legislação brasileira. Verificou-se que a mesma é geneticamente capaz de cumprir as novas demandas estabelecidas para qualidade de leite, e que apesar da influência sazonal negativa sobre seu desempenho, há genótipo suficiente para garantir qualidade à matéria prima durante todo ano.(AU)

Twelve strains of a novel yeast species were isolated from rotting wood, mushrooms and fruit samples in Brazil and French Guiana. Analysis of the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer region and the D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene showed that the novel species belongs to the Kurtzmaniella clade. The novel species differed from its closest relative, Candida natalensis, by 12 substitutions in the D1/D2 sequences. The novel species could be distinguished from C. natalensis by its inability to assimilate cellobiose and salicin, and growth at 50â% (w/w) glucose. The name Kurtzmaniella hittingeri f.a., sp. nov. is proposed for the novel species. The type strain of K. hittingeri sp. nov. is CBS 13469T (=UFMG CM-Y272T). The MycoBank number is 827183. We also propose the transfer of Candida fragi, Candida quercitrusa and Candida natalensis to the genus Kurtzmaniella as new combinations.
