ABSTRACT

AIM OF THE WORK: The authors present unusually rare case primary multiple synchronicus benign tumor of the ipsilateral parotid gland: oncocytoma and Warthin's tumor, which is rare among occasionally occurred multiple tumors with different histology in the salivary glands. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A 71-year-old man presented with the tumor in the right parotid gland. We performed excision of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland. The preoperative ultrasonography and macroscopic analysis of the removed parotid gland tissue revealed only one tumor recognised histopathologically as adenolimphoma, but upon histopathological examination Warthin's tumor proved to coexist with oncocytoma. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: In the ultrasonography examination some salivary glands tumors may not be recognised. The histopathological examination is the ultimate method in recognising tumors, which are not detected in the preoperative diagnosis. The superficial parotidectomy protects from the recrudescence of the superficial lobe of the parotid gland tumors. The coexistence of the oncocytoma and Warthin's in one parotid gland is extremely rare. Only a few cases were described in the English literature and in the available Polish literature there is none of such reports.

ABSTRACT

We reported two cases of the anterior cranial fossa meningiomas: cerebral falx meningioma and recurrence of olfactory groove meningioma. Since the tumors grow very slowly, they remain clinically undetectable during the early stages and can reach a very large size. Clinical manifestations are caused by pression of meningiomas on adjacent structures. The authors present possibilities of radiological examinations of intracranial tumors and treatment management. In the described cases meningiomas were diagnosed in CT examination with the use of angio option and reconstruction RT3D and MPR.

ABSTRACT

The paper presents the case of a 58-year old male with low performance status (3 according to WHO) diagnosed with bone-disseminated, undifferentiated carcinoma of unknown primary origin in April 2001. The patient was given reduced dosage CAP chemotherapy (cisplatin 40 mg/m2, doxorubicin 40 mg/m2, cyclophosphamide 40 mg/m2, every 21 days). A total number of 12 treatment courses were administered, reaching summary admissible dosage of doxorubicin. The patient's condition improved in the course of treatment - pain symptoms and levels of tumor biomarkers decreased significantly, while performance status increased. Chemotherapy was completed in December 2001. Patient status was stabile till March 2004. Presently the level of tumor biomarkers are increasing but it is not accompanied with metastasis or primary focus manifestation. Although the described patient undoubtedly belonged to the group with poor prognosis, the treatment applied resulted with surprisingly positive effect.

ABSTRACT

The work presents a case of occurrence of nasal polyps of a chimpanzee. The world-wide literature holds the view that this pathology does only occur among the human race. Only in two cases the polyps has been found among chimpanzee.

ABSTRACT

Central nervous system hemangioblastomas (cHAB) are rare tumours which most commonly arise in the cerebellum. Most tumours are sporadic, but as many as one third of cHABs occur in the course of the hereditary disorder - von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL). In order to diagnose new VHL families in Poland we performed sequencing of the entire VHL gene in archival material (paraffin embedded hemangioblastoma tissues) in a large series of 203 unselected patients with cHAB. VHL gene mutations were detected in 70 (41%) of 171 tumour samples from which DNA of relatively good quality was isolated. We were able to obtain blood samples from 19 of mutation positive cases. Eight (42%) of these harboured germline mutations in persons from distinct undiagnosed VHL families.
